Scout Report – Manuel Lanzini

Last week, West Ham made Argentinian midfielder Manuel Lanzini their seventh summer signing, with the 22-year-old joining on a season-long loan from UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al-Jazira, with an option to make the move permanent.

New Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was glowing in his praise of Lanzini, nicknamed “The Jewel”, and likened the new acquisition to a certain Man City playmaker:

“I watched him two years ago and I wanted to take him to Besiktas, but it was difficult. Now, the chance has come to get him, he’s going to help us a lot as he will add even more creativity in the crucial parts of the pitch. At the age of 20, he was given the No 10 jersey at River Plate who, with Boca Juniors, are a massive club of course. He’s not very strong but he rides challenges, he doesn’t go down – so I hope he could be big for us. There are deep playmakers like [Andrea] Pirlo or [Luka] Modric or you have playmakers between the lines up front like Silva. He’s more like him but he can play in all positions behind the strikers.”

THE HISTORY

Having come through the youth system at River Plate, Lanzini made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in a 1-0 win over Tigre in August 2010. He made 22 appearances for Los Millonarios during the 2010/11 season, although he failed to find the back of the net. Lanzini then spent the 2011/12 campaign on loan at Brazilian side Fluminese, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals, and helped them win the Carioca in 2012.

Upon his return to River Plate ahead of the 2012/13 season, Lanzini was handed the coveted number ten shirt, worn by the likes of Ariel Ortega, and went on to provide eight goals and two assists in 26 league appearances before stepping up his creativity the following year, delivering five goals and nine assists from 41 outings in all competitions.

In 2014, Lanzini joined Al-Jazira, and scored eight goals in 24 league appearances alongside former Juventus and Roma forward Mirko Vucinic, helping secure a second-place finish in the league.

Lanzini has also been capped four times for Argentina at under-20 level, but has yet to earn a call-up to the senior side.

THE PROSPECTS

Although Bilic has opted for 4-4-2 on occasion during the summer, the Hammers are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 for the season ahead. The Croatian primarily employed that formation during his time at Besiktas and rolled out such a system for last weekend’s trip to Charlton.

This would certainly enhance Lanzini’s prospects of finding a place in West Ham’s starting XI, with the young Argentine taking up one of the places alongside fellow new signing Dimitri Payet in the three attacking midfield slots behind a lone striker. This would see the likes of Enner Valencia, Matt Jarvis, Morgan Amalfitano and Mauro Zarate battle it out for the final berth, with Diafra Sakho looking favourite to lead the line.

In terms of match sharpness, though, the new boy has conceded he’s a little behind his team-mates, which indicates he may be eased into life in the top flight until his fitness is up to speed for the demands of the Premier League:

“First of all, I want to settle here, this is a very difficult and competitive league. It’s then about being at the same level as my teammates and getting into the starting XI as quickly as I can. I have already spoken with the manager. I told him I was looking forward to starting training, to getting fit and getting up to speed with my colleagues.”

Certainly, once he’s fully fit, Lanzini – at a price of just 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), could warrant some consideration should he live up to Bilic’s expectations and establish himself as a first-team regular at Upton Park. At this point, though, Payet (7.5) and Sakho (6.5) look the strongest options right now, with the former – who created more scoring opportunities than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues last term – also handed dead-ball duties by Bilic.

Judging by his manager’s comments, Lanzini is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s and the Hammers’ new coach Julian Dicks has also been suitably impressed by what he’s seen in training.

Whilst the Hammers’ first three away matches (ars, liv, mci) are hardly enticing, their first four fixtures at Upton Park pit them against Leicester, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Norwich in the opening seven Gameweeks, suggesting Bilic’s side may well deserve our Fantasy attention. For now, Lanzini looks one to monitor but once he’s up to speed, the Argentine may well emerge as one of the strongest options in the budget midfield bracket.

Hi guys! I would love your thoughts about my team.

    Schmeichel (Speroni)

Azpi - Cédric - Mings (Coates, Whittaker)

Hazard - Walcott - Henderson - Depay (Redmond)

    Rooney - Benteke - Deeney

I love 9 of my players in the starting 11. I'm not sure about Schmeichel (new manager), Depay (is he going to prove himself immediately?),

Maybe I'm going to change my GK-s later.

I have problem with my 2 benched DEF. I want better 4,5 there but I just don't find any. Do you?

    Thanks your comments guys.

with the recent emergence of Giroud offering a viable mid-priced striker option i have reverted back to having hazard and aguero.

    Schmeichel - Schwarzer
    Azpillicueta - Koscielny - Prodl - Francis - Targett
    Hazard - Walcott - Chadli - Ritchie - King
    Aguero - Giroud - Sakho

Double Arsenal attack, what's not to love?

Odd first sentence - he's always been a viable striker.

But any way. Very nice team, going with Aguero from the start?

Wenger's recent comments have pretty much cemented his place in my team. Going with Aguero from the start - though i am considering Rooney for an easy GW2/4 transition - but we all know how important those FTs are at the start of the season

That'll do. 2 fixtures from a 4.0m defender will enable strengthening elsewhere. Can easily bench him after that.

Weird thing about Sunderland - always finish the season strong, promising new signings, optimism for the coming season.
Then starts the season terribly, looking virtually relegated by February, sack the manager then make a miracle recovery.

We've already added lens to the team and aiming to sign an attacking centre midfielder before start of season. If that happens then at £5.5m defoe def worth a punt. He's a proven premier league goalscorer unlike someone a promoted club such as deeney.

No chance. We've signed lens who will play left of the front three and it'll be either johnson or giacherrini on the right. We literally had no other options last year, hence why he was used in that position.

Fair enough. So you think Defoe will be the central striker ahead of Wickham, Fletcher etc? He does struggle on his own up front..

I think so to start with, although I can't guarantee it 100%. We're trying to offload fletcher. Wickham would obviously be a worry. At this stage though I def think we'll start the season with defoe, although heard we're trying to sign another striker. That won't happen until we sell fletcher or graham though.

Thoughts about Costa as a fpl prospect. Is he worth that price tag? Best captain option for gw1 and easy to upgrade for Aguero.

He will surely score +20 goals but no baps unless scores a brace, yc frequently, inevitable rc at some point and Falcao stealing his gametime.

I really think he isn't, he's steady away but never much more than that. I like a bit more explosion from my strikers, I think Rooney's a better option.

I'm not convinced by him, discipline is a problem and he didn't often score more than one goal and few baps as you mention. I think there's more reliable options for the money.

Walcott is good for the first few games, whether it be as a mid or striker. No point looking any further than that with us having to play WC in first half of season this year. Makes sense to play it early.

Neither am i really lol Just like how villa/west brom fixtures rotate and a cheap 4.5 pairing, i don't think event he big clubs are good for clean sheet keeper poitns so never like spending a lot on keepers? Doesnt seem many of yoru points come from them? I'm open to advice though as I like to think i know a bit abotu football however always do REALLY bad at FF even tho I love it. Thats why i joined here this year because I want to shock some people!
I'm really tempted with some putns but don't dare this early in! I like sound of Jurado for Watford after reading the new article on here so was tempted to change Mahrez > Jurado and then Deeney > Wilson so i'm not doubling up but I fear its too punty for early and Mahrez seems half nailed/half punty?
Any opinins of people who are good at this are most welcome 🙂

Which options will do better first 10 Gameweeks??

    A) 3-5-2

    Mignolet
    Azpi/Huth/Francis
    Walcott/Haz/Richie*/Mane/Sterling
    Benteke/Rooney

    Hennessey/Eder*/O'Shea/Holabas

    B) 3-4-3

    Mignolet
    Azpi/Huth/Francis
    Walcott/Haz/Mane/Sterling
    Benteke/Rooney/Wilson*

    Hennessey/Anya*/Cedric/Holabas

For 3 weeks only until WC:

    A
    Fabianski/Schmeichel
    4.5 rotation

    B
    Pant + 4m
    Fonte

Could be another 5.5 instead of Fonte, but think SOU have best first 3 fixtures of any 5.5 defender? (new EVE wat)

To go with Ivan + Kos.

Long term yes, but if you're planning wildcarding early like me then £8.5m pairing is fine I think. Especially if hennesey does become a viable option.

    Thoughts on Benteke versus Giroud

One has no experience with Liverpool yet. Quality player but in a team witch has just been renewed.
The other one plays for Arsenal who were the best team in the last 6 months and is unchanged this season. May suffer with sharing of Arsenal attacking points.

There is a 0.5 price different too to consider.

Watching brief on both for me - I'm starting Lukaku with money to potentially switch.

Everyone seems to be writing off Lukaku on fixtures and generally being a Larry Letdown. Yet Watford first up followed by Southampton who have defensive issues and the Man City who are prone to let a few in as well as score loads.

Darmian has less competition as a RB in the form of Valencia only. Valencia is expected to start the season as first choice RB. Darmian will be eased into the squad probably.

Shaw has more competition at LB with Blind, Rojo and maybe Ashley young but looks more nailed. I expect Shaw to start at LB tho.

Most sensible option to start off with?

    A) Walcott+Hazard+STERLING+Ritchie+Wanyama. Take a 4pt hit or WC to get Kun
    B) Walcott+Hazard+7.0+Ritchie+Wanyama+2mil ITB for Kun (straight swap with Costa). No City cover until then.

    Thoughts?

didnlt realise they were paying 8m, interesting! Yeah must be a first-team guaranteed spot sort of agreement then. In which case yeah it's gotta be 5m hey! Not a bad option but there are others out there in that bracket who are more attacking like PVA

Does anyone have any concrete news about Crystal Palace's reserve goalkeeper, Hennessey, potentially moving to WBA?

    Hennessey is very cheap.

Do you think its vital to have two goalkeepers who will defo play?

Jordan Amavi was in the WhoScored European team of the season, with a rating of 7.7, along with the likes of James Rodriguez, Ronaldo, Messi,Otamendi and Hazard.

Okay, he is a better player than I thought...
