Scout Report – Jordan Ayew

Earlier in the week, Jordan Ayew became the third player to arrive at Aston Villa from Ligue 1 this summer as Tim Sherwood continues to assemble his new-look side. The Ghanaian signs on in a five-deal deal for a reported fee of £8.5m, as Sherwood splashes the cash following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Speaking to the club website, the 23-year-old admitted that Sherwood needed little time to convince him of making the move to the midlands:

“When I spoke to the coach I knew this was the place for me. I didn’t think twice. I knew he was the right coach for me. He has so much enthusiasm and determination for the game of football. It took 10 seconds to work out he was the right coach for me and Aston Villa was the right team for me.”

THE HISTORY

Son of African legend Abedi Pelle (and brother of Swansea’s Andre), Ayew joined fourth-tier Lyon-Duchère’s youth academy at the age of nine and left six years later for the Marseille set-up. His first professional appearance came in December 2009 as a substitute against FC Lorient in which he scored the equaliser of a 2-1 victory.

The Ghanaian went on to feature 147 times for “Les Olympiens”, including 21 Champions League appearances, and managed 22 goals and 16 assists in his time there. However, he never managed to cement a starting role and was often introduced into matches from the bench.

During the opening of the 2013-14 campaign, Ayew only notched once in 16 appearances and was consequently loaned out to FC Sochaux in January 2014 to rediscover his goal scoring touch. This deal worked well for the forward and, after a slow start, he produced five goals and two assists in his final ten outings.

After completing his loan, Ayew decided to move to pastures new in July 2014 and signed for FC Lorient in a deal worth €4 million. This proved to be the making of his career as he went on to produce 12 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances – his best ever goals per game ratio.

To date, Ayew has turned out 28 times for the Ghana national side. He broke into the first team ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started all fixtures in that competition, in which Ghana finished fourth. The striker made only one start during the 2014 World Cup as his country failed to get out of the group stages. The pinnacle of Ayew’s international career came this year, when he picked up an African Cup of Nations runners-up medal after losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

THE PROSPECTS

The departure of Benteke has left a gaping hole up top in the Aston Villa line-up and Ayew is expected to immediately nail down a starting berth in the season ahead. Certainly, the versatile Ghana international is no like-for-like replacement for Benteke, though; his pace and movement offer options on both flanks, though he could tuck in centrally behind a more robust striker.

Although the five-foot-11-inches Ayew could also be fielded up top, he’s far less suited to a lone forward role. Given that the new boy lacks the physicality to lead the line on his own, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Sherwood linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor as the club’s new target man.

To an extent, much depends on Sherwood’s tactical approach for the season ahead. The Villa boss has rolled out 4-3-3-, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formations over the summer, with Libor Kozak also staking a claim for inclusion with three goals to his name so far. A lone striker system could well see Ayew moved onto the flank, leaving the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor to battle it out for the other wing berth.

It’s worth noting, though, that Ayew excelled at Lorient as part of a two-man frontline last year and offers far greater threat through the middle. The Ghanaian managed 48 of his 81 shots on target last term – a highly impressive shot accuracy of 59% was higher than any regular forward in the top-flight.

Furthermore, his pace and tight dribbling often draws fouls which could see him pick up assists for any penalties/free-kicks that Villa convert. On the downside, though, Ayew has picked up 33 yellow and three red cards during his professional career and will need to curb his temperament in the Premier League.

Ultimately, Sherwood’s rebuilding work will be key to how we assess his side. Only Sunderland (304) created less goal-scoring chances than Aston Villa’s 306 last season and the departures of Fabian Delph, Tom Cleverley and Benteke, who contributed a combined 96 of those, will be detrimental.

Priced at just 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Ayew has a favourable opening six Gameweeks (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA) that could see him stake a claim for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ plans – all the more so if he can grab spot-kick duties as a result of Benteke’s departure. As we saw last season, Sherwood’s sides will certainly go on the offensive and, providing he can cement a spot through the centre, Ayew may well emerge as a decent value option for our three-man frontlines.

Chris Smalling & Phil Jones will fight for one place on opening day after LVG revealed Shaw, Darmian and Blind will definitely start.

    Hopefully Smalling!

was just about to post about Darmian being praised by LvG. Interesting that he says that Shaw or Blind could play as a LCB. During the early part of his career it was said that Blind's final position might be as a CB. I still have my doubts

Lvg mentioned he wants his players signed before preseason and we haven't signed a cb yet , which is one of the most imp position and now we have blind starting as cb in our 1st game.

Things change. Someone said that may have been mistranslated, he was misunderstood. Anyway, that's an old quote, this is the new one. He might have been really impressed with Darmian after saying that.

Blind been playing centre half in pre season? All look some risk of any drop in form with likes of Rojo in the wings and Valencia last year's full back.

I've been pondering this for a while abndI was wondering what you all think. When we all inevitably have to buy Aguero does Hazard become too expensive to justify spending 11.5m on him. If you take a look at the fixtures from GW4 onwards there aren't many week where you'd captain Hazard over Aguero and in the weeks that you would I'd much prefer to captain someone from another team.

    Thoughts?

It's definitely a good point re:captain - when Aguero is fit regardless of fixtures almost I pretty much want to captain him but from GW4 he has some great ones.

Hazard would also make it much easier to get him in.

Problem is Hazard is very consistent even if you don't captain him. All depends what you do with the money - I wouldn't want to be without but I might have to be.

      Also - Sanchez.

I think Hazard needs to be a good captain option to make the first choice close to the 2nd one.

I am prioritising have Liverpool defensive cover in my team, contrary to popular opinion on here. Getting Mignolet saves me 0.5 off Skrtel, if I go the other way round.

Currently toying with the combined 12 million I have for the Wilson and Lens spots, the rest of the team is pretty much nailed for the moment.

Jonty made an interesting point last night about Wanyama . He thinks he is going to fall in price because his ownership is so high , early wildcards because an attacking 4.5 will emerge and new players swapping him out because he is not scoring .

Thanks for the thoughts. Pelle thrives on confidence and I think he'll do well given his fixtures and pre season form. Wanyama's ownership is already 18% and with so many other players to join in yet, that ownership is only going to rise. Which will result in his price falling when he blanks in the first few game weeks. Getting Fletcher helps me save value, which might be crucial, later.

Of the players already joined, 18% has chosen Wanyama. What makes you think that _more_ than 18% of players yet-to-join will pick him?

Because the popular picks will become even more popular, most 'casuals' join the game just before the season starts

Well, you're better at it than pretty much everyone here so who are we to argue? 😆

Still, as you asked here's my two penneth:
      - GK combo 0.5 too expensive
      - Williams needs rotating too much in the early going to be worth 5.0
      - Sunderland don't score enough to make Lens a good pick. Gini a better punt on other side of river
      - Kane over Rooney
      - Can do better than Wilson. Leicester score goals. One of Vardy/Ulloa instead?
      - What's your Aguero plan?

Williams and Huth rotate well. Both are CBI kings, according to this:

        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/5599/

I know Lens and Wilson are punts. I'm thinking what to do about those spots. With an accumulated 12 million in the bank.

Rooney is a proven FPL pick, Kane is also a good shout though. Just don't have the funds.

Possibly Walcott/Rooney to X/Aguero in Game week 4 I guess.

      0.5m too little on keepers
      Too little in defence
Nasty midfield, however I prefer Wanyama to Fletcher
      Reasonable strike force.

I like it. Liverpool have a pretty decent run so I think Migs as a set and forget keeper isn't a bad choice. Backs are very solid. you could downgrade Williams for a 4.5 (O'Shea has good fixtures). Midfield is good. I don't know much about Lens. Like to wait and see til this weekend's game to see whether Walcott is a decent option. I'd rather Giroud over Rooney at this stage, but that's personal preference.

Thank you for your thoughts. I don't particularly rate any of the 4.5 defensive options out there, Huth being the only exception. I may be wrong but even O'Shea isn't 100% nailed. Giroud is interesting, however there is always the impending shadow of a 'new' Arsenal striker lurking

yeah i understand your point on the arsenal striker issue. but he is still performing and a benzema type signature is a way off...

as O'shea is still captain, i'd think he was pretty nailed. But agree that he isn't 100% nailed

Front 3 far too premium to be gambling gw1

One of them in wildcard team

The attack is too weak. Kane and Vardy could be good differentials but I think you should consider more firepower up top. Right now the team is very unbalanced.

West Brom was: Dawson McCauley Lescott Brunt, but Chester had signed so we dont know atm. Lescott should be nailed though.

Swansea will be: Naughton Williams Fernandez and one of Taylor or Tabanou at left back.

Costa if possible and if fit unless getting him would leave you with a budget/unbalanced midfield.

Did anybody watch the Spurs match?

    How did they play...line up?

More importantly how did Kane look?

Kane got 2 excellent chances, that goal he scored was an astounding finish. Well worth the 1m over Benteke from what I saw!

Toughest thing about this year is just how different scout picks are going to be from GW1 to GW2

Difficult to get off to a flying start when the 11 you'd like almost entirely different across the first 3 gameweeks

Finding players that look good for 2 in 3 of them is key but it means taking a Liverpool player to Stoke a Tottenham striker to Old trafford and West ham attacker to Arsenal!

With GW2 and 3 a LItTLE more similar, might try build a gw2 team and just hope it stacks up ok with enough class to get through gw1 the risk... The horse could bolt. People with strong gameweek 1 who wildcard in 2 will be off to a flyer

I'd ignore West Ham to go to a flyer. Sakho is good. But his goals arent a given.

    Benteke / Pelle / Giroud

in the rest of my team:
    I have Guzan from villa.
I have Koscielny and Ozil from arsenal.
    I have Cedric from southampton

Plus, Bojan's a Big no. He wasnt worth it when he played. Diouf is always the striker or crouch. Bojan the CAM.
And no, west brom plays brunt as their 4th def.

Ki and wilson costs 10.5. Ritchie and Sakho is by far the best. Ki and Wilson will save you 1

A new team with Aguero (Assuming Costa is injured) Thoughts?

    Ruddy Butland
    Azpi Merte Cedric O'Shea 4.0
    Hazard Walcott Mane Chadli 4.5
    Aguero Falcao Wilson

Plan for Aguero - Already in 😀
