Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Friday

Rickie Lambert scores twice on his debut as West Brom put four past Bristol Rovers. James Chester is deployed at right-back on his first start for the Baggies. Watford fall to a 1-0 defeat in their final summer friendly, whilst goals from Tokelo Rantie and Marc Pugh aren’t enough to stop Bournemouth from losing at home to Cardiff.

Bristol Rovers 0 West Bromwich Albion 4

Having penned a two-year deal with the Baggies just hours prior to kick-off, Rickie Lambert bagged a brace on his debut for the West Midlanders. The first was a fortuitous deflected effort, while the second was a neat finish from a James McClean cross. Craig Gardener and Victor Anichebe rounded off the scoring for the visitors.

Tony Pulis deployed his troops in a 4-4-2 set-up, with Boaz Myhill in goal, James Chester at right-back, fit-again Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson in the heart of defence, and Chris Brunt at left-back. A midfield four comprised of Gardner, Claudio Yacob, James Morrison and McClean supplied the ammunition for strike pairing Saido Berahino and Lambert. Pulis made eight changes over the course of the second period, with the likes of Anichebe, Brown Ideye, Darren Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon and Callum McManaman earning minutes off the bench.

Pulis talked up Lambert’s influence after the final whistle, insisting that the veteran will have a key part to play, both on and off the pitch in the season to come:

“Rickie’s played at lower level and each time he’s stepped up he’s done well. He did exceptionally well at Southampton and probably feels he deserved more games at Liverpool. But it’s not just on the pitch that he will important, but off the pitch too. He’s a great lad and in Saido we have a wonderful talent, along with other youngsters we have. We hope the way Rickie conducts himself and how he acts will be good for him and our other young players. You cannot have enough role models. He’s been brought up through the lower leagues. When you get the chance to work down there you want to get the chance to claim everything you can – that ambition and drive remains and I hope we see the full benefits of that and I hope the other players do too.”

Bournemouth 2 Cardiff City 3

With a match against Hoffenheim to follow this evening, Eddie Howe fielded a mix of fringe players and first-team options as the Cherries’ relinquished a 1-0 lead at the Vitality Stadium. Tokelo Rantie kicked off the scoring by rounding the Cardiff keeper and slotting into a vacant net, while Marc Pugh fired home a driven finish to offer hope of a comeback in the final 20 minutes.

Charlie Daniels, Andrew Surman, Simon Francis and Sylvain Distin were the other notable inclusions in the starting XI, with the latter reportedly impressing in central defence. Yann Kermorgant was forced off on 35 minutes with a heel problem, Howe confirmed post-match.

Watford 0 Sevilla 1

Quique Sanchez Flores named a strong starting XI for the Hornets’ final pre-season friendly clash against Rojiblancos. Keeper Heurelho Gomes was protected by a back four of Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Ikechi Anya, who took up the left-back berth. Sticking with his favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up, Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami occupied the double pivot, while Miguel Layun, Ighalo and Steven Berghuis supported lone striker Troy Deeney.

Gabriele Angella, Ben Watson, Jose Holebas, Matej Vydra and Juan Carlos Paredes were afforded run-outs in the second 45, but Almen Abdi (knee) and Jose Manuel Jurado (muscular) sat out this encounter with minor knocks.

Taking stock after the defeat, Flores conceded that due to the influx of new players over the last couple of months, he is still no closer to knowing his likely starting XI for next weekend’s opener at Everton:

“I don’t know, we have one week more and it is difficult. We are incorporating players every week which is good news but that makes it difficult because we are then having to explain to the new players what we want from them in the system, the model and the way we want to play…Today we played a deeper defensive line in the first half and it was difficult to stop their players. In the second half we played with high pressure and a different style…We are trying to create a good balance between defence and attack. I wasn’t that happy with the football in the first half because after we won the ball we then rushed and we lost possession and the chance to build the play. I understand the players need to make mistakes in order to advance. So I am not very sad.”

If Berahino stays it would be a question of who stays on pens duty..

Kermorgant wasn't nailed in the Championship last season. He was rotated pretty well with Pitman, playing in the 10 behind Wilson or being first attacking sub.

I'd say he's a bit like Hoolahan at Norwich. Very good player, but will probably play mainly home games when the team is set up to be a bit more attacking.

What do you guys think about 3-5-2 and going 3-4-3 once we get a clearer idea about the forwards in the 5.5-7.5 range? It's pretty much impossible having three forwards about 7.5 with a Rooney or Costa.

It's so hard to pick between Deeney, Wilson, Sakho, Berahino etc because we just don't know how they'll perform. Could be a lottery pick.

Whereas there are many more mids that are "proven" in the EPL.

Exactly, I just don't feel comfortable going with the likes of Deeney/Wilson as the 3rd striker spot when we (or I) don't know anything about them.

Sakho is relatively proven and he's more likely to score plenty points than any of the 6.5 - 7.5 mids IMO.

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

I'd say Sakho and Berahino are pretty reliable performers.

That's what I currently have at the moment. Hazard plus 4 other decent mids in the 7 - 9 mill range. Rooney up top with Sakho and Wilson/Deeney to rotate. There also seems to be a lack of good cheap midfielders but there are a lot of options for budget forwards. Plan is to wait until a good cheap midfield option arises and downgrade worst performing mid to them to fund upgrading the strikeforce.

Ighalo will start the season, imo. He may even carry on.

The trouble will be that he'll regularly be first change with Vydra, and once the new guys bed in, there'll be more competition.

If he gets off to a flyer, it wouldn't surprise me to see him push Deeney for his place - cat, pigeons. But don't be too influenced by pre-season.. a lot of those goals were against very lowly teams. If you want him to play every week, he might be a transfer waiting to happen. If you're 3-5-2ing, it could be a canny punt, and you can survive a couple of GWs if he loses his place. 🙂

If Clichy is out for a while I'd gamble on B
      A is obviously safer

Pick two out of the following four:
    Chadli
    Milner
    Walcott
    Ozil

PS dont have any other players from respective clubs.

Doubling up on arsenal not a good idea?
Arsenal have been pretty good in preseason.

Inclined with this choice. Will have to manage funds though.

Morning all, would anyone mind casting their educated eyes over this?

    Mignolet - Myhill

    Martin - Huth - Ivanovic - Fonte - Richards

    Capoue - Henderson - Silva - Walcott - Mane

    Wilson - Rooney - Kane

Does this provide enough flexibility? I'm a fan of keeping a balance in the team and want all guaranteed starters (as much as you can). Cheers.

Hello guys finally managed to sort out a team which I think is decent enough WITHOUT Hazard

    What do u guys think?

    Butland/Schwarzer

    Azpi/Mertesacker/Clyne/Cedric/Huth

    silva/Mane/Hendo/Schneiderlin/Johnson

    Rooney/Kane/Lukakau

Gw1 Lukakau to Sakho, gw3 or 4 Rooney to Aguero

I am still fearful of not having hazard though I feel I could manage first 6-8 gwks this way with minor surgery when needed!!!! 🙂

I toyed with the idea of no Hazard for ages, then resigned myself to the fact that he will simply destroy me if I don't get him

i think aguero is more important captain choice throughout the season for me.... last season everytime i had hazard as captain he blanked and i shall be burnt no more... silva and aguero can offset no hazard loss imo

I like the 8.5M on keepers. Not sure about Clyne, away fixtures. Is that Adam Johnson?
I'm with you on Lukaku, but I'm getting negative responses saying its a waste of a FT and may as well play Pelle GW1.

clyne i have purely for home fixtures, bradley johnson (Norwich) as they have some great home fixtures, and i need money saved from Lukaku to Sakho to bring in Aguero for rooney gw3-4

    Ok here it goes:

    Panti
    Azpi Koscielny Cedric
    Hazard Walcott Mata Henderson
    Costa Pelle Wilson

    Myhill Wanyama Mings 4.0m

    Any thoughts appreciated

Does anyone else wait until Match of the day with no idea of the Saturday scores to watch their FPL players all at once? I find that the most exciting way, especially when you work during the day.
