Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Friday

Rickie Lambert scores twice on his debut as West Brom put four past Bristol Rovers. James Chester is deployed at right-back on his first start for the Baggies. Watford fall to a 1-0 defeat in their final summer friendly, whilst goals from Tokelo Rantie and Marc Pugh aren’t enough to stop Bournemouth from losing at home to Cardiff.

Bristol Rovers 0 West Bromwich Albion 4

Having penned a two-year deal with the Baggies just hours prior to kick-off, Rickie Lambert bagged a brace on his debut for the West Midlanders. The first was a fortuitous deflected effort, while the second was a neat finish from a James McClean cross. Craig Gardener and Victor Anichebe rounded off the scoring for the visitors.

Tony Pulis deployed his troops in a 4-4-2 set-up, with Boaz Myhill in goal, James Chester at right-back, fit-again Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson in the heart of defence, and Chris Brunt at left-back. A midfield four comprised of Gardner, Claudio Yacob, James Morrison and McClean supplied the ammunition for strike pairing Saido Berahino and Lambert. Pulis made eight changes over the course of the second period, with the likes of Anichebe, Brown Ideye, Darren Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon and Callum McManaman earning minutes off the bench.

Pulis talked up Lambert’s influence after the final whistle, insisting that the veteran will have a key part to play, both on and off the pitch in the season to come:

“Rickie’s played at lower level and each time he’s stepped up he’s done well. He did exceptionally well at Southampton and probably feels he deserved more games at Liverpool. But it’s not just on the pitch that he will important, but off the pitch too. He’s a great lad and in Saido we have a wonderful talent, along with other youngsters we have. We hope the way Rickie conducts himself and how he acts will be good for him and our other young players. You cannot have enough role models. He’s been brought up through the lower leagues. When you get the chance to work down there you want to get the chance to claim everything you can – that ambition and drive remains and I hope we see the full benefits of that and I hope the other players do too.”

Bournemouth 2 Cardiff City 3

With a match against Hoffenheim to follow this evening, Eddie Howe fielded a mix of fringe players and first-team options as the Cherries’ relinquished a 1-0 lead at the Vitality Stadium. Tokelo Rantie kicked off the scoring by rounding the Cardiff keeper and slotting into a vacant net, while Marc Pugh fired home a driven finish to offer hope of a comeback in the final 20 minutes.

Charlie Daniels, Andrew Surman, Simon Francis and Sylvain Distin were the other notable inclusions in the starting XI, with the latter reportedly impressing in central defence. Yann Kermorgant was forced off on 35 minutes with a heel problem, Howe confirmed post-match.

Watford 0 Sevilla 1

Quique Sanchez Flores named a strong starting XI for the Hornets’ final pre-season friendly clash against Rojiblancos. Keeper Heurelho Gomes was protected by a back four of Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Ikechi Anya, who took up the left-back berth. Sticking with his favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up, Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami occupied the double pivot, while Miguel Layun, Ighalo and Steven Berghuis supported lone striker Troy Deeney.

Gabriele Angella, Ben Watson, Jose Holebas, Matej Vydra and Juan Carlos Paredes were afforded run-outs in the second 45, but Almen Abdi (knee) and Jose Manuel Jurado (muscular) sat out this encounter with minor knocks.

Taking stock after the defeat, Flores conceded that due to the influx of new players over the last couple of months, he is still no closer to knowing his likely starting XI for next weekend’s opener at Everton:

“I don’t know, we have one week more and it is difficult. We are incorporating players every week which is good news but that makes it difficult because we are then having to explain to the new players what we want from them in the system, the model and the way we want to play…Today we played a deeper defensive line in the first half and it was difficult to stop their players. In the second half we played with high pressure and a different style…We are trying to create a good balance between defence and attack. I wasn’t that happy with the football in the first half because after we won the ball we then rushed and we lost possession and the chance to build the play. I understand the players need to make mistakes in order to advance. So I am not very sad.”

I'm sure this has been asked many times

I know there isn't any nailed on 4.0 but who is the closest one?

Saylor, Burke? Not counting Targett since Berty will be back very soon.

Well, Burke should play our first match against Arsenal. Unless Slaven starts buggering about, in which case he might play Tomkins at RB.

Ozil for me. Cazorla and Ramsey will be battling it out for the spot next to Coquelin. Ramsey could play on the right if Walcott starts up front, but then he has competition from Wilshere and Oxlade Chamberlain too

          You can.
He has almost zero chance of an offensive return (& even if he gets 5 assists & a goal this year, are we going to have selected him for our starting XI?)

After that, with him burning up an Arsenal spot we've limited our ability to grab 3 Ars players who may actually score us points.

Not unrealistic to think we'd want an Ars def & 2 x Attackers.

Wait, why do we want to limit the amount of football everyone can see on opening day?
(There's a clear cut reason on the last day.)

I say have noon, 3pm & then an evening game! (With extra security 😉 )

Its not all about money, its about maximizing the amount of footy we all can enjoy.

I've just told / shown you how it can be about both.

What good comes of every single game starting at the same time on the 1st day?
            Who benefits here?
Why is that a *good thing* for all footy fans?

Nah you have not shown that at all.
the fact that it maximizes your amount of footy to enjoy is just a side effect of the money issue... They go hand in hand, but if you take out the money of the equation it is down to sportsmanship. The sportsman like conduct would be to have all games kick off the same day at the same time.

I respect your opinion but money is what controlls things, not your ability to enjoy games....

I may be a tradisionalist but I really think that how it is now is a shame, but it is the reality we live in

I think that those teams that play in europa league have a valid point to play 1 day later those weeks that they have been playing on thursday, but other then that there are no sportsmanship reasons.

                  You are a nitwit.

Part of the joy of actually playing in a weekend tournament is being able to watch the others play as well.

Also, this game is for the fans... That's where all the money come from!

So, limiting the amount of games they or the other players can see is simply ridiculous.

Please don't dig your heels in here, in an attempt to *win* an internet fight.

Less enjoyment for fans & players = bad.
                  More = good.
                  That's it, that's all.

                > the fact that it maximizes your amount of footy to enjoy is just a side effect of the money issue...

                Of course! Fans drive revenue.

                > The sportsman like conduct would be to have all games kick off the same day at the same time.

You have no evidence to support your claim.

Show us where the majority of players would prefer every league match kickoff at the same time?

Wait stop, that's a rhetorical question.

If you want to be stubborn just to prove something to yourself:
'I have an antiquated notion of what sportsmanship is... & that's that. Evidence & reason against it be damned!'

With Watford playing their last preseason match last night I thought I'd compile this of who scored and assisted their goals in preseason. many of you may find this useless but I had a bit of free time and decided to look through who scored and assisted these goals as Ighalo vs Deeney seems to be a bit of a debate which is going on.

    Comparison:
Watford played 6 preseason games. Scoring 13 and conceding 6 in the process. Most seem to be going for Deeney on here as he was there top scorer last year and scored well in the championship for the last 3 years. During preseason Deeney scored 2 goals and assisted 3. This seems a respectable amount in 6 games but Ighalo scored 6 goals in the same amount. Fair enough Ighalo did not register an assist over the 6 games but 6 goals scores a lot more in fantasy football than 3 assists and 2 goals does.

Also worth noting is over the 6 games the Watford centre back Craig Cathcart assisted twice. I realise Watford Defence is useless and it's very unlikely that anyone will want one especially with there fixtures at the start but if you want a Watford defender he would be my choice.

I drafted very rough estimates of fantasy points Ighalo and Deeney would have scored over the 6 games and it goes as follows.

    Ighalo: 34
    Deeney: 33

As you can see it's very very Close.

I personally would still go for Deeney despite the 0.5m extra. He has just signed a new contract, he's the captain and will want to impress and he has more of a strong premier league build. Also, 4 of Ighalos goals came against SC Verl and St. Albans, 2 very poor oppositions I am unsure how he would cope against better teams. However, I still think Ighalo is by far the best option at the 5m mark.

I'd replace Theo and just have Ozil as his Arsenal mid.

Theo can become a £7m mid and he can upgrade O'Shea to a £5 - 6m defender to play every week with Azpi.

Looks good. I like the double Soton picks. 4.0m def coild be a worry. I have gone with Kos over Azpi (goal threat, fixtures etc)

Just saw Double Arsenal. Drop one to Hendo to cash up you could have another 4.5 def and Azpi > Ivan.

Quite like the balance of the following draft:

    Butland, Ruddy
    Azpi, Merte, O'Shea, Huth, Francis
    Hazard, Wally, Sterling, Chadli, Fletcher
    Rooney, Pelle, Sakho

Mind rating it out of 10?

Milner to Depay or another 8.5.

There was a theory a couple of weeks ago that banford would have only been allowed to go to palace with a promise of sufficient game time. Murray looks like he is on the way to bournmouth so is bamford likely to start or more of a back up option?

    1. Nomar
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

      Start.

Palace never had a nailed on striker last season. They've flip flopped between Gayle, Chamakh and Murray.

Clearly, Pardew doesn't believe any of those 3 are genuine starting calibre Premier League forwards for a team looking to establish themselves in the second third of the table, hence getting Bamford.

I doubt Mourinho would have loaned out Bamford for him to sit on a bench at a Prem club, when he could be doing that at Chelsea.

Schmichel // Butland - Rotating fairly well

    Kos // Darmian //Azpi // O´shea // Targett - K/D/A playing almost every game

Silva // Haz // Özil // Milner // Hendo - Mil or Hendo out for Kun cash depending on who performs

    Wilson // Roon // Igalho

    A)
    Schmeichel ( Butland )
    Kosc - Azpi - Huth ( O'shea - Targett )
    Haz - Sterling - HENDERSON - Ozil ( Bentaleb )
    Rooney - Kane - Deeney

    Or
    B)

Aguero's minutes at the start of the past few seasons. AoC...did some research just to put my mind at ease - didn't help 😀

    2014/15 (post World Cup)

    GW1: Away at Newcastle - 7min
    GW2: Home to Liverpool - 22min
    GW3: Home to Stoke - 90min

2013/14 (no summer tournament, but he had an injury that ruled him out of all preseason games)

    GW1: Home to Newcastle - 62min
    GW2: Away at Cardiff - 90min
    GW3: Home to Hull - 76min

    2012/13 (no major tournament)

    GW1: Home to Southampton - Injured after 13 minutes...misses next 3 games.

So many people will see that Wanyama hasn't scored in the first 3 weeks and drop him. This means he will then drop in price (he certainly won't be rising in price) and when it comes to the wildcards, it is wasted money.
He might not drop in price but he certainly won't be rising and he is no better a pick than other options so there is no benefit of picking him, just risks.

Obviously Jagielka, Azpi and Kosc are good all options. They all have a decent chance of a clean sheet, probs Jagielka less so.
If all 4 are in your team, you need to start again because that is a seriously unbalanced side.

        Hazard - Walcott - Ozil - Chadli - 4.5
        Rooney - Pelle - Sakho
