Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUES

We’ve already set up the official Scout League with a top prize of £1000 on offer to the winner once again. If you’ve tinkered with your Sky team and are looking to get involved, our league name is FFScout and the code is 8009000.

Finally, we’ve set up a community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

Walcott nailed for first 2 GW's only? Sterling was an average FPL pick last season. Tough fixtures for Man City, and have been terrible during pre-season.

          1. The Pep Revolution
            • 12 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

Walcott can do well even coming off the bench if he does get benched. Sterling will be a great player this season, plenty of goals and assists. Tough fixtures for City, cant deny that but still Sterling has great potential to do well. At least it spreads the risk amongst different teams rather than two Chelsea mids.

            1. Puyol Pants Up
              • 9 Years
              8 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, 2 Chelsea mids is a slight worry, but could work out great. Sterling will do well at Liverpool, no doubt about that. But to start the season with those fixtures? Like you said, Walcott will be benched, more often than not. Why would you want a FPL player who comes on for likely 1 pointers? 🙂

                8 years, 10 months ago

Two Chelsea midfielders could work out great, no doubt. But I would prefer to spread the risk, thats me, each to their own. Regarding Walcott, by any chance did you watch the video on the article called "Welcome to the Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery". Jonty talks about an article or post on it about players points per minutes. Walcott is one of the best on the list. Benched or not he does very well. I have him on my team but again we all have our preferences.

Possibly a strange question here but Im trying to allocate the final 18m to the last two midfield spots and third forward spot. My current team is:

    Myhill Ruddy
    Azpilicueta Cédric Huth O'Shea Francis
    Hazard Walcott Milner Chadli Wanyama
    Agüero Pellè Sakho

Im thinking possibly swapping Sakho and Wanyama to Deeney and Ki.
Or maybe Chadli and Wanyama to Ki and Ritchie as Sakho and Ritchie rotate well.

Would appreciate any suggestions or thoughts. Thanks.

For those asking (I asked a Liverpool know it all this tonight):

Gomez is unlikely to start. He's done well, but he's still a kid and Moreno is still expected to start. Gomez's performances have meant he stays and doesn't go on loan.

Ibe will likely get the nod over Firmino who will be eased in.

Benteke is still expected to start against Stoke. They need a player like him against Stoke. They are urgently trying to ensure he's ready for that game.

Certainly looking at it. Sinclair, Ibe and Aaron's could be good 5.0 picks. If only there were good enough strikers to put all 3 of em in the midfield. Better mid than striker options for me this year.

    So..your thoughts please

    Butland / Ruddy

    Hazard / Ozil / Henderson / Ritchie / Anya

I'm not so sure on Giroud... Would personally prefer to downgrade him to a midrange striker (Sakho, Berahino, etc.) and upgrade one of your cheapie mids. Otherwise, really like the team

I wouldn't go for Anya as read a scout report for the last friendly, and he played left-back.

Also I see aground getting rotated with Theo

    "Transferring Out Your Captain

If you choose to transfer out your captain at any stage, the player that comes in will automatically be assigned as your new captain. Using this tactic, you can change your captain without using one of your allocated Game Week changes"

Can I clarify - does this mean you get double points for both captains? Or just the new one transferred in?

Thanks! I went for my must haves first (Rooney, Sterling, Hazard), then I've tried to fill the gaps using the season ticker and definite starters.

Would love Sanchez & Aguero but so expensive and won't start the season IMO

Many will say O'Shea will pay cos he's captain. One word: Arteta.

I personally think that Dick came in and rescued the team. He reinstated Coates who was solid and then went and made his transfer permanent. Coates smust be in.

He then went and bought Kaboul. I can't see Kaboul leaving the Spurs bench for the Sunderland bench.

I also think Kaboul and Coates are better defenders than O'Shea.

My conclusion is that O'Shea will be dropped and Kaboul // Coates will be the partnership.

These are my choices for a 3rd striker in a draft league, who'd you take?

Ighalo - scored 20 goals for Watford in the Championship

Cisse - On fire when he gets plays and stays fit, but is he under threat from Mitrovic?

Bamford - Chelsea young'un that Crystal Palace have taken on loan for the year
