Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Southampton vs Everton

Saturday’s events get underway with a clash between Southampton and Everton at St Mary’s this lunchtime. Both sides are looking for a first win of the new campaign after registering 2-2 draws with Newcastle and Watford last weekend.

The Saints proved a reliable source of defensive returns at home last year, chalking up 11 clean sheets in front of their own fans and conceding a mere 13 times – only Chelsea (nine) proved more miserly.

After netting twice at St James’ Park last week, they’ll be looking to take advantage of a Toffees backline devoid of the injured Leighton Baines. Certainly, given that the visitors managed just two clean sheets on their travels last season, those backing the Saints at both ends of the pitch will fancy their chances of getting amongst the points.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

guardian: Southampton are being over-run in midfield at times. If only they had a player like ... I dunno, Morgan Schneiderlin to stop Everton scything through them on the counter-attack.

Yep, Pelle assist too. That was the difference between Pelle and Mane owners grinning and what we have now.

If getting rid of Pelle and Mane for Watford and Noriwch becomes a priority then folk have a far better team than me 😉

He's like Sterling. Fast, good runs but a very inconsistent finisher. Sterling plays for City so he'll get plenty of chances, Mane for 8m, at Southampton? That is a bit much IMO.

Doesn't change the fact that more often than not, he needs 3 or 4 chances to score 1 goal.

Not sure about Mane in the middle. His pace would be much more useful coming off the wing.

He's basically in a float position, going from wing to wing. The only good ball to him, he messed up on. But most have been bad long balls that have tried to play soton behind the defense although with little precision.

Yep, what else could we go on? Everything, including betting markets, go on on this until we have more data. We're all getting that now and, not surprisingly, we're all having to re-assess our teams and targets.

Assist first game, no Southampton defensive form to go on aside from Newcastle away and we didn't forsee Everton dominating and scoring two goals.

Easily explained, the fixture list is was in his favour and whe we compiled the Watchlist we had one match to go on - he got an assist in that match. He'll suffer a drop now that we have more form on the Southampton defence which is clearly in need of reinforcement - even so - Norwich and Watford, then West Brom - no need to panic yet.

I think we should be more worried about Soton defenders full stop. Europa League always takes it's toll and conceding from fast breaks from corners two weeks in a row is naive at this stage of the season. They commit so many forwards when they have a corner.

It seems like last week, this week and probably next week too are all just about damage control, until we get back to the safety of our Aguero's, Hazard's, Sanchez's e.t.c. Always so tricky to know who the sure bets are from teams outside the top clubs. Saints and Sunderland defence who were reliable last season, aren't so this year. Everton remain so hard to predict, impossible to know which of the bottom clubs will perform the best at this stage. So many questions to answer, and squads need to be flexbile and react quickly when the big guns get going
