The Digest – Gameweek 2

Our last glance at Gameweek 2 highlights Sergio Aguero’s irresistible display against Chelsea and Everton’s improvement in the final third, whilst the champions’ sluggish start to the season has made their prime Fantasy asset surplus to requirement for many.

The Player

It took Sergio Aguero just ten seconds to convince Jose Mourinho that Chelsea were in for a torrid time at the Etihad last Sunday.

Slipped through for a one-on-one with Asmir Begovic, the Argentine fluffed his lines on that occasion but ultimately tormented the champions with seven attempts on goal, grabbing his first of the season with a display that forced the Blues boss to haul off John Terry at the break.

Overlooked by many for the start of the season due to his late return to summer training, the race is now on to acquire Aguero in light of his weekend performance. Already snapped up by over 195,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers this week, the City striker has risen to 13.1 as we look to his fixture-proof appeal to arrest – what has been for many – a poor start to the Fantasy campaign.

With Raheem Sterling adding speed to the City flank and David Silva dazzling in the middle, City look a force of nature right now. Having fired six past West Brom and Chelsea – sides that racked up 16 and 17 shut-outs in 2014/15 respectively – Manuel Pellegrini’s men are in irresistible form and, in Aguero, they possess a player capable of unlocking the meanest of defences.

The upcoming schedule could hardly be kinder, either. With a trip to Everton preceding clashes with Watford, Palace, West Ham, Spurs, Newcastle and Bournemouth, Aguero’s armband appeal could barely be stronger. Finding the cash to acquire him looks vital as we turn to the reliable Argentine to fire our ailing Fantasy sides back up the rankings.

The Team

It’s easy to forget that Everton finished fifth in their first season under Roberto Martinez in 2013/14.

With the added hassle of Europa League duties to contend with last time out, the Toffees struggled to cope with a packed schedule that even saw them flirt with the relegation places before steadying the ship in the final few months of the campaign. Having stuttered to an eleventh-placed finish last term, the Merseysiders can concentrate solely on domestic matters this year.

Judging by their 3-0 win at St Mary’s last Saturday lunchtime, a lack of European action could prove beneficial for Martinez and Fantasy managers alike. The Saints conceded a mere 13 times at home last year but were swept aside as Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku tore apart Ronald Koeman’s backline. At a time where many highly-owned assets are struggling to justify our collective show of faith, the Toffees duo have already served up two goals and an assist apiece as Everton waste no time in reminding us of their capabilities. Factor in the 5.1-priced Arouna Kone’s goal and pair of assists from the right and it’s easy to see why the Merseysiders have been subject to major bandwagons at the start of the season.

Can they maintain these displays, though? Up next is a perfect storm of form versus fixtures which is set to test the Merseysiders’ mettle. Having emerged from St Mary’s triumphant, Everton now face an extraordinarily tough run (MCI, tot, CHE, swa, wba, LIV, MUN, ars) which may well limit their potential. Whilst many will be prepared to hold until the schedule smiles kinder in Gameweek 11, their weekend display suggests that Everton may be an altogether different proposition under Martinez this time around.

The Talking Point

As Chelsea struggle for any semblance of form at both ends of the pitch, Fantasy managers are deserting Eden Hazard in their droves.

After just two rounds of fixtures, the Belgian’s mere two attempts on goal have persuaded many to look elsewhere as Jose Mourinho’s men stumble out of the blocks.

Certainly, there are no shortage of in-form alternatives. City’s aforementioned run of fixtures has elevated Aguero, David Silva, Sterling and Yaya Toure in our thinking, with many seeking to acquire two or even three of Manuel Pellegrini’s main men in light of their opening displays. With Alexis Sanchez looking electric on the Arsenal left, Hazard’s lofty 11.5 price tag is proving the obvious source of funds to facilitate such moves.

There’s no doubting Hazard’s quality. He has, after all, racked up 14 goals and ten assists in each of the last two seasons and will eventually return to our radars but with Chelsea currently toiling, we cannot afford to carry a premium-priced player as a passenger right now. With Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez boasting both the returns and underlying statistics to justify his inclusion as a viable fourth midfielder, the decision to part company with the Belgian has been made that little bit easier.

Structuring our squads to offer an easy route back for Hazard looks a sensible option and the acquisition of either Silva or Sanchez opens an easy route for his return. For now, though, the exodus is picking up pace as we place our faith in the form players until Hazard, and Chelsea, can rediscover their title-winning spark.

Anyone who didn't start with Wilson now considering him? Looked strong against Liverpool (physically). Could be a nice differential with the fixtures he's got. Even more so now that his price drop is out of the way.

What's with people and Wilson? Wishful thinking? He hasn't looked good at all in the first 2, no clear cut chances nor looking threathening at all. Don't care what stats say, I watched both games and he never even looked close to scoring or assisting in any of them...

      "There may be trouble ahead
But while there's moonlight and music
      And love and romance
Let's face the music and dance

      Before the fiddlers have fled
Before they ask us to pay the bill
And while we still have the chance
Let's face the music and dance

Soon, we'll be without the moon
Humming a different tune and then
There may be tear drops to shed

Well there was a great analysis on Sky last night showing how Kolarov, Silva and Sterling are linking up very well on the left vs. Chelsea and its meaning that Kolarov is getting into dangerous positions to cross very often.

Add free-kicks to that and I think it more than makes up for a few benched games (hence why having a strong defence is important).

Hi lads, getting tired of changing my WC team but im finally there, what do you think?

    Courtoise (4M)
    Cedric - Williams - Huth (Targett/Francis)
Sanchez - Silva - Chadili - Mane (Wanayama)
    Aguero - Benteke - Wilson

Not sold on Cedric at the moment, sold him on my WC and will see how that goes for a bit! Apart from that not bad - hearing mixed things about Wilson but he'll likely start firing eventually.

Maybe another keeper until Chelsea start to tighten up more at the back?

Ah right I see! Yeah might not be a bad shout I guess, maybe upgrade Huth - Mahrez will probably still get some price rises from people just adding in the highest-scoring cheapest player by default too, so might be a cheeky bit of cash to be made on him. I'm not too savvy with price rises though so don;t take my word for it 😉 !

This is my current team: most years i wildcard around gameweek 14 and have never done it this early however i feel there may be too many names in here that need transferring out urgently

    Cech/ Schmeichel

    Clyne/ IVANOVIC/ CEDRIC/ BAKER/ SIMPSON

    STERLING/ HAZARD/ Mané/ Ritchie/ Wanyama

    DEENEY/ ROONEY/ Benteke

The players i have put in captials can definately go and i am happy to get rid of benteke and even Mane, Cech and Schmeichel also.
Is this enough to justify a wildcard?

Also as the above article highlights, city coverage looks essential and that i am lacking in.

i wouldnt take Clyne or any def from L'pool till December, they wont get too many clean sheets on away games

If you are set on getting rid of all of those players then a WC is needed.

I will try and convince you that some of them might not be as bad as you first thought.

Ivanovic: Renowned points scorer. Chelsea will surely respond after 2 bad weeks.
Cedric: Loads of crosses in his first game. Has the fixtures to turn it around.
Sterling: Your only City coverage at present. His pace is threatening teams, just needs some end product.
Hazard: Will be good value in the long run. Going through a rough patch but, like with Ivanovic, it surely can't last!
Rooney: Great fixture against Newcastle. Surely has to at least have a shot at some point this season. We know he can score goals.

Had an absolutely shocking GW2 with a grand total of 21 points for the week, this is my team for GW3 but should i wildcard or stick with the team?

    Butland - Hennessey

    Cedric - Huth - Azpi - Targett - S Taylor

    Hazard - Sterling - Cabaye - Depay - Sinclair

    Sakho - Aguero (c) - Pelle

Team still looks strong on paper. My team isn't too different to this.

The way I see it, these players can't keep having bad weeks.

Maybe WC if you are looking to increase team value, but even then it might be worth waiting for the international break.

I was always planning the wildcard around the international break but i feel its forced my hand a little bit. Although as you say, the players cant keep having bad weeks so i think ill ride it out for a couple more weeks

I had a team not hugely different. Have just WCd. Depay and Hazard at the moment were weighing the team down - with Kun and Sanchez making immediate impacts it's hard to sit on them. Good options rising in price in the middle of the pricing brackets also forced my hand a bit.

Potentially. He can't be bad for many more games surely.

Yes.. Chelsea have no choice but to go all attack.
WesBrom have already shown there are work to be done defensively as City enjoyed themselves there.

Having already done Rooney, Kane + Walcott --> Aguero, Gomis + Payet for a -4, is it madness to also do Hazard --> Sanchez for a second hit.

Pros: Sanchez looks better form than Hazard.
    Sanchez price could increase.
    Hazard price could fall.

Cons: Hazard still has high ownership.
    Hazard will eventually score points.
-8 point hit after just 2 game weeks.

keep Hazard. Find another way to fit in Sanchez

Keep Hazard for next GW. Chelsea have no choice but to go all attack and he'll surely be the instrumental one out there. While Alexis faces LFC, which seems solid at the back.
So, better keep the chance for next week.

    @ Wildcarders

    Anyone considering Kos/Merte/Azpi ?

My defence will probably be something like:

    Komps/Kolarov - Kos/Azpi - Darmian - Gomez - 4.0 bench fodder

Silva is better. but Yaya + 1.5 of upgrades elsewhere is probably better overall.

I just feel knowing that Company will play EVERY game adds so much value to that .6 extra you are paying. Kolarov almost needs a guaranteed rotate to go along with him.

Kolarov is not nailed yet.. With Clichy recovering, he might be benched sooner.

    Long term keeper plan option

    A, Courtois + McCarthy (9.4)

    B, Schmeichel + Butland (9.0)

      I think B.

Only because I think Butland is quite good and if Chelsea do fire I think I would want 3 slots available for their outfield players.

    So which would people prefer:

    1) a man city defender

    2) Yaya

I know it's different positions. But I have money in the bank for just one of the above (.1 short of both frustratingly)

Yaya for now I suppose but really depends on who you are bringing him in for

Mane at the moment which i'm not too keen on as his stats haven't been too bad. But Yaya is also racking up some good numbers and looks like good value at the moment if he keeps rampaging forward.
Man City just look like they have way more goals in them compared to SOT at the moment.

I did not WC. I used 2FT's to get this:

    Panti
    Mert, Morgan, Cedric
    Özil, Haz, Mané, Mahrez
    Aguero, Benteke, Vardy

    Henne, Fletcher, Francis, Coates'

    Good enough?

Anyone tempted to put Sterling in at 8.9?

Can sell Yaya for 8.6 hopefully after he increases again..

    Madness?

Also going to put Mane in at 7.9 I think, price fallers are tempting..

    Can you rate my team?

    Butland/ Ruddy

    Azpi, Gomez, Mert, Francis, Targett

    Fabregas, Ramsey, Mane, Payet, Afellay

    Aguero, Wilson, Benteke

    Thanks.
