Games

PlayON Focus – Gameweek 4

As we’ve mentioned previously, our approach to the weekly games is slightly different this year. Armed with an opening pot of £100 for each game, I’ve been tasked with turning that cash into profit and will be updating you on my progress every Friday.

There’s plenty of teams with a promising fixture on paper this week – fortunately in PlayON up to five teams are allowed in each of the free pots and unlimited entries in paid games over the weekend allowing plenty of combinations to be tested. The front two spots are usually a good place to build the team from and with Sergio Aguero (£15.0m), Christian Benteke (£11.7m) and Diego Costa (£14.4m) all playing at home against Watford, West Ham and Crystal Palace respectively they are difficult to overlook, as are their attack minded midfield team-mates.

As mentioned in our midweek Weekly Shop article, there are, however, cheaper in-form options also vying for a spot. Callum Wilson’s (£7.8m) hat-trick at Upton Park could be the start of a run with gung-ho Leicester City up next. Stoke’s Mame Diouf (£9.1m) is also tempting after scoring in back-to-back outings – his form at home also bodes well as West Brom visit the Britannia.

In midfield and defence there’s also many enticing options, not just from those top teams with decent home fixtures. Arsenal midfielders could prosper on the counter against Newcastle and look worthy of investment alongside more budget picks from the likes of Bournemouth and Stoke on the fringes once funds are tight.

The Bottom Line

Another weekend of results that have left me with the feeling I’m treading water as I try to build the pot back up. Winnings of £3.06 almost offset my stake leaving the pot at £82.66, down only £0.24. Patience should hopefully pay off in the long run and I plan to stick with the strategy of low-fee entries and free games for another week, though I’m also entering a few more head-to-heads than usual.

This Week’s Stake

Weekly – The usual five entries go into the £100 guaranteed free game. I’ve gone for two head-to-heads for £1.65 and entered a team in the £1.10 entry game for a £100 pot.

Daily – There’s no Monday night game this week but five teams go in the Saturday and Sunday £25 freerolls. I’ve also entered three head-to-heads on Saturday for a total of £3.57.

Weekly Stake – £6.32
Current Balance – £76.34

As a PlayON Pro it’s possible for you to challenge me one-on-one in all three timeframes this week, these games are not included in the £100 challenge and operate separately. You can also take on other PlayON Pros, current FPL champion Simon March and OptaJoe.

PlayON also have other guaranteed games ahead of the Gameweek 4 deadline. There’s a 200 player, £1,000 Guaranteed game, which requires a £5 entry free, or a 25 player, £500 Guaranteed game, which you can enter for £20.

If you’ve finished tinkering with your Fantasy Premier League team, why not head on over to PlayON to get involved.

  2. Is Yaya over performing in FPL

Does anyone else think that we are perhaps being deceived by Yaya Toure's stats so far this season?

He has scored 2 goals and notched 2 assists in 3 games and after going up in value is £8.8m...However out of these, all but 1 assist occurred when Sergio Aguero was off the pitch. From this it is clear to see that when Aguero doesn't start or goes off, Yaya naturally or has instructions to push up from his deep midfield position and has been successful at this so far. We also saw this in Yaya's dominant 2013/2014 season where he got 20 goals and 9 assists, a season where Aguero was injured for the most part, meaning Yaya was on penalties and was required to push up the pitch into more attacking positions. Then contrastingly last season when Aguero played significantly more games, Yaya only achieved 10 goals and 1 assist. Therefore is it really worth relying on an £8.8m midfielder who's main points only seem to come when the star striker is off the pitch?

On the other hand David Silva has clocked 3 assists in 3 games this season (and should have also been given a goal which FPL gave to Toure) and comes in at a £10.1m. Yes some of these occurred when Aguero was off the pitch but because of his advanced positioning in the hole and the fact he is on most corners and some other set pieces, we can trust Silva to deliver in a more consistent manner. This is shown in his scoring history from previous seasons, where he has achieved at least 12 assists each season for the last 4 campaigns and also notched an average of 7.25 goals per season in that time (scoring 12 goals last season). This shows that Silva does not require the absence of Aguero to rack up the points and so arguably justifies the extra £1.3m to be your City midfielder of choice.

...But could the arrival of Kevin De Bruyne spoil the party for both Yaya and Silva to become an essential fantasy asset, with 10 goals and 20 assists for Wolfsburg last season, I don't think we would be too surprised!?

I don't think the sample size for the current season is large enough to draw any meaningful conclusions.

If KdB comes in City it will not necessarily impact Yaya, he will slot in for Navas who isn't particularly defensive himself.

Ive got to say he is backing it all up. I watched him pre-season and he was very good. He was getting in to the exact same positions where he has been scoring but was hitting the bar or going just over. He seemed very energetic too, and was storming past people.
This could be 2013 all over again, with a direct split on here for those who can't believe it could continue and desperately preamble for stats to back up their opinion and those that just jump on and enjoy he ride.
For now though, Im happy with Silva. 🙂

This is exactly it. Yaya defies stats. I failed to get him in two years ago and it had a massive impact on my season. There was a DGW when he had 3 shots and scored 3 times. Nobody would be keen on getting someone that had 3 shots in 2 games. His % success rate on freekicks was also insane that year.

People have to go with their gut on Yaya because stats are a red herring in his case

I've got such bad memories of Silva over Yaya in 2013 that i've decided to stay away from both of em. Yaya defies logic.. never has the stats but will score points. Silva has looked brilliant but 2 of his assists have come from set pieces and he has barely had any shots on goal. i'm hoping Aguero + Kolarov is enough. I cant go through that Silva OR Yaya dilemma again!

Yes, I was burnt by being too slow on that wagon. Yaya out of sorts last season though, he's back in form no doubt. I do expect Silva to outscore him though, question is what the extra £2.5 can do elsewhere in the team - e.g. Hazrd over Pedro, which is a topic for discussion in itself

      Only scored ten goals...seriously?

Best points come when star striker is off the pitch...its a 90minute game and Aguero is often wrapped in cotton will or even injured.

Silva's 3 assists = 2 x corners headed/shouldered in by Kompany (and how often does that happen in a season - probably about twice), and the other when Ivanovic booted the ball against him and luckily fell straight to the other player's feet in front of a virtually open goal

He was, but you're arguing that he's not a good option this season, because he 'only' scored 10 goals last season with Aguero playing most of the time. I'm saying if he matches that level of performance this season, with Aguero playing most of the time, he'll be very good value at his price this time around.

Plus, I am great at giving feedback. Hamburger method

and i have children so I can manage some of the squabbles on here and some of the younger members... not that I'm used to handling young members. I'm not, that's wrong.

Anyway back to the job interview,... I don't need a lunch break - I run on the thrill of moderating the sh!t out of people.

Never been a fan of Yaya, in fact I don't think I ever owned him, but now's the time.

It came down to the fact that I could transfer him in without taking a -4 hit.

Another reason is that despite all the Silva's (whom I like very much) flash, I think it's always a good idea to pick a direct goal-minded player over the assist-type of one. Yaya will smash the ball whenever he gets a half-chance, while Silva will always be looking to set up someone else for a perfect opportunity.

I doesn't feel right owning him, but it sucks even more when others have Yaya and are enjoying their free ride.

Depends on the rest of your squad. Also indicating that he is playing away. It may also mean you have on paper better options -perhaps playing at home or with easier fixtures?

RMT is telling me to play Mahrez - that must mean my squad is worse than yours. 🙂

Is Targett looking likely to get another start? I noticed Bertrand wasn't even on the bench last night or last week which might indicate Targett is safe for another week unless Bertrand will go straight into the starting 11?

He will play RM taking over Dembele/Lamela's spot. I think around the 7.5/8 mark as a guess. He's a goal scoring midfielder with a great long range shot. Should help Kane get on the end of a few scrappy deflected long range shots if nothing else

He played either CAM behind Kiessling or on the wing I think.
My view is he will definitely increase Kane's prospects.

Or he does brilliantly and Kane continues to suck, maybe shifted as a striker. He's played there before but with Kiessling at Leverkusen, he wasn't required there

Ozil is not a problem in your team, while Mane is, so A is more logical. But if you scroll up a little you'll see Don Corelone's post about Yaya. I'd still sell Mane but not for Yaya.
