Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 4

Following a Gameweek littered with knocks and niggles, we roll out our usual post-match club-by-club report on the fresh arrivals in the treatment room.

We find Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe with plenty to concern him, whilst Claudio Ranieri plays down the back problem that forced Riyad Mahrez off against the Cherries.

Arsenal
Mesut Ozil missed the Gunners 1-0 win at Newcastle with a minor knee problem. Prior to the match, Arsene Wenger confirmed he expects the German back imminently:

“It’s a slight injury but he is not available to play. He will be out for one week”

Aston Villa
Jack Grealish missed Villa’s home draw with Sunderland after injuring an ankle in training on Friday, while club skipper Gabby Agbonlahor was also ruled out through illness after the club had been hit by a widespread virus.

Post-match, Tim Sherwood brought us this on the Grealish injury….

“Jack twisted his ankle. There was no-one near him. He caught his toe in the turf on Friday. He went over on it. He was sick, gutted. We don’t know how bad it is. We’re hoping it’s just a sprain and the international break might give him an opportunity to be ready for the Leicester game.”

While he also updated us on Agbonlahor’s situation…

“Gabby is not well. He’s had the stomach bug. I think there’s six or seven at the club who have suffered. Gabby was one.”

Adama Traore was also ruled out against the Black Cats having made his debut from the bench at Palace in Gameweek 3. Sherwood was optimistic on his return after the international break…

“Adama is feeling a kick. He got a kick on the back of the calf and obviously rolled his ankle at the same time. The good news is that the ankle is okay. It’s just about the soreness of the kick – and it was too sore for him to take part.”

Bournemouth
The Cherries’ treatment room got a little bit busier this weekend after three of their players sustained weekend injuries. Tyrone Mings lasted just 11 minutes as a sub before being stretchered off, whilst Max Gradel is also a worry for Eddie Howe:

“We need to assess and scan before making a judgement. Tyrone didn’t look good, seeing him in that much pain, it’s not nice to see. Max knew early it was serious. Knee injuries are not good to see. It restricted us tactically. We couldn’t make changes when we needed to to get momentum back.”

Left-back Charlie Daniels was forced off with a knee problem at the break, though is optimistic the problem isn’t serious:

“I had an initial scan and it did not look too bad. Hopefully, it will be nothing long-term but we can’t really tell yet, that was just the first look. Once the swelling has gone down, I will probably have another scan on Tuesday to see how it is.”

The Cherries were also without Joshua King due to a hamstring problem.

Everton
The Toffees are set to be without Tom Cleverley for a period of time after the midfielder was stretchered off in yesterday evening’s goalless draw at Spurs. Post-match, Roberto Martinez admitted the club are uncertain how long Cleverley will be sidelined for:

“The physio is a little bit more positive [than he was at half-time]. I think it is clearly ligament damage – but, straight away, we were fearing it could have been ligament damage and a fracture as well. It shows that Tom is a very, very fit man to be able to get through that collision with a [relatively] minor injury. He will still be out for a while but not as long as we first thought he might be – and we thank the luck that we had there.”

Leicester
Claudio Ranieri confirmed that the Foxes in-form Riyad Mahrez was subbed off at the break after sustaining a back problem during yesterday’s clash with Bournemouth. The Leicester boss eased concerns over a serious injury by revealing:

“We changed Riyad at half-time because he took a kick very early in the game and after that, in the battle, he could not play at full speed. I wanted us to keep pressing forward, so we replaced him as a precaution.”

Southampton
Victor Wanyama – who missed the Saints Europa League exit on Thursday evening with a stomach bug – was again absent for today’s win over Norwich. With rumours of a move to Spurs growing, Ronald Koeman revealed the Kenyan was “not mentally and physically good enough to play” against the Canaries.

Stoke
Mark Hughes has confirmed that Glen Johnson was forced off just after the hour mark against West Brom due to a groin problem.

Swansea
Jefferson Montero missed today’s win over United with a minor thigh problem. After the match, Garry Monk eased fears over the extent of the injury:

“Unfortunately Jeff pulled up in training with a bit of soreness in his quad, but he has had scan and it is nothing clinical.”

Tottenham
Spurs are set to assess Moussa Dembele after the Belgian was stretchered off during the goalless draw with Everton with a foot injury.

The player himself has since posted on Twitter offering reassurance on the scale of the problem.

West Brom
James Chester missed the Baggies 1-0 win at rivals Stoke due to a minor hamstring problem. Callum McManaman also suffered from a similar complaint but was fit enough to make an appearance as a second-half sub.

Silva or Sanchez this week only?

Silva has form, but away to palace may not suit him... Sanchez at the emerites seems a lot more enticing.

I remember Silva @ Selhurst Park last season, absolutely dominated but others couldn't finish his chances and he narrowly missed a few himself. Came away with 2 appearance + 1BP 😀

So I'm not sure why it wouldn't suit him.

In short I'd go Silva haha

Lads.. who would you trade first?

    A) Pants
    B) Mert
    C) Benteke

I have a feeling Benteke is the one to go... My lads look insipid. 2 goals in 4 games... much the same as last season it would seem.

Pelle is a donkey. He is too wasteful and for that reason might get the occasional goal but won;t get bonus and doesn't really do much apart from score every now and then.

Yeah I didn't know that the WC must be used in the first half of the season. This international break is probably the best time to use it eh? Don't think my team needs it tbf. I've spent a lot on hits haha

Save it unti just before the second half of the season so you can set yourself up neatly until when and DGW's appear then you can use your second one. That is what I hope to achieve.

Finally bid farewell to Eden Hazard for Pedro. I love him but he simply doesn't have the firepower to carry such a heavy price tag anymore. Was tempted to bring in Ayew or Sanchez instead but I want Chelsea cover for when they inevitably start firing soon.

Played my wildcard last week and sold: Alderweireld, Koscielny, Mane, Gomis, Sakho and Sinclair. I can say with great certainty that the players I brought in did not match those scores.

That's four complete shambles in a row, have never suffered a whole month of this and doing it from the start of the season is sickening.

Two of my start-of-season squad were Tadic and Sinclair. Combined score today: 30!

Points those two contributed to my team while they were in it: 10 (mostly thanks to Tadic's GW1 assist).

To be fair, Sinclair was terrible in the first week - his underlying stats looked something like 0 0 0 0 0 0 77 0 0 0 0 - and Mahrez has proved an able replacement.

Tadic, meanwhile, had a good first week but was injured in the second and the fact he didn't play in the third was probably a good indication that I was right to move him on.

Chelsea's best player but that's not saying a great deal... Other big-hitter spot in my mid holds Silva who is performing okay. Sanchez is poorer than Pedro, but I haven't a clue whether Arsenal or Chelsea are the better bet going forward.

Depends on the chances they have and how the team is doing!

Chelsea as a whole are looking pants and Haz wan't delivering or doing enough on the ball for the time he was on it.

If you watch the games you can tell how teams generally look and feel and Sanchez and Aguero have had great chances and City look unstoppable. Arsenal taking time to warm up but are getting there.

Sanchez has been denied goals by some very very good saves and desperately unkucky not to have anything. Only a matter of time before he gets a double digit haul. Same with Aguero.

They're 2 players that can score 2 goals in a minute and fantasy gold... Once fit, they're in.

      1. M8

IMO Sanchez is the only Arsenal midfielder/striker worth having atm. I don't but have been keeping a close eye on him. Wenger's one striker policy is so frustrating. Either Giroud or Walcott could be gold if either of them were a certain starter.

For Sanchez and Hazard, I say 2. Or 3 at most.

At the start of the season they were priced very competitively but I think we just have to admit now that Sanchez is probably not worth 2.5m more than Cazorla/Ramsey/Ozil judging by Arsenal's play at the moment and the fact that Aguero will probably be more captainable than Sanchez in the next 5-6 games.

For Hazard, I have accepted that Pedro is and will be a genuine fantasy football option playing on the opposite wing. With that in mind, as well as set pieces, it's hard to justify the extra 1.9m (soon to be 1.7m probably) difference in price tag.

Hazard vs Pedro through my eyes.

I have accepted that Pedro is and will be a genuine fantasy football option playing on the opposite wing to Hazard. Granted he didn't play too well this weekend, but it's been quite evident that he will be more or less equally as important to the Chelsea attack as Hazard.

With that in mind, as well as some set pieces, it's hard to justify the extra 1.9m (soon to be 1.7m probably) difference in price tag between the 2 players.

Are you intending to stop the rot in terms of points and value with Hazard early this GW?

Already done. Tough on Eden but his price is to inflated.

yea it's not an easy decision to make for sure. But at this point, we need to make a decision on what we have to work with - and current evidence points to Hazard being overpriced vis a vis Pedro. My stubbornness has already cost me 0.1 and 15 points - considering the switch in GW4.

Its something I'm pondering if I dont get Ayew this gameweek. I can definitely see the point in the season where I'll want/have both as Chelsea fire

If Depay doesn't perform against Liverpool, then he'll be out for Ayew next week. The reason I didn't sell Depay this week was because I brought him in for gameweek 3 so haven't had him since the start. Plus he'll be desperate to score in the derby.
