Taking a wild stab here but given he's a 9 and Januzaj has been sent on loan... It's more likely he'll play behind or ahead of Rooney. Might even switch positions during games.
As for the continual clamour for Mata to start games behind the striker. He already drifts in from his wide position anyway. I doubt that's going to change any time soon as that's the least of United's issues with regards to their formation & players not performing.

Unfortunately in the real world, LVG doesn't see Mata as a 10.

It's not a bad idea, Targett won't play and I cant see you're other two defenders getting cleansheets. I'm not sure why Zotter thinks home to Stoke is a tough fixture (I can see Sanchez scoring) and City are playing well. Go for it I say!

Yes, looks a good time to play it. Likely you might want to get a 4.5m mid in future so this is likely the strongest front eight you'll have.
I have the same issue, my front 7 is the same as yours (bar Shaqiri instead of Payet) and I have those three defenders. Thinking of playing it, I was going to save it for later in the season but not sure if it will be better than now (maybe on GW without all the teams playing, the odd formation might come in useful).

I started the season with Targett, mane and pelle. Still have Mane and targett, but just sold Pelle, Jerome and Coates for Wilson, Diof and Clyne AND -8. Good move? In retrospect, I could have just done coates and pelle for wilson and clyne for -4 (since I'm not starting diof vs arsenal unless mahrez is still injured), but whatever -- diof has great fixtures after arsenal and if he happens to score his price will rise for sure.
I think i'm keeping mane since he plays OOP and looked great the last few weeks, and keeping targett for now until I see bertrand play a full 90 without reinjuring himself.

i wouldnt swap smalling for anyone in the league on form at the minute he's been sensational and just needs a solid partner.. we dont know how otamendi will adapt
theres a reason why kolorov has been a bit part player and in and out of the team at city over the years hes not good enough to nail down a place he's in now in light of clichys absense and to be fair he's been excellent and may well keep his place but shaw for me

He was vital in winning the league in 2013/2014. My opinion is not just based on this season. He wasn't brilliant last season admittedly but very few were at City. Something changed after the Derby last April. Its been a different team since.
