Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 6

United’s new goal hero and Watford’s fine opening displays arrive on our “Digest” radar, whilst Chelsea’s resurgence looks poised to resurrect our interest in Eden Hazard and the Blues backline.

The Player

A finely taken brace against Southampton on Sunday afternoon has catapulted Anthony Martial onto many Fantasy managers’ radars this week.

After netting as a sub in the Gameweek 5 win over Liverpool, Martial earned his first league start under Louis van Gaal and wasted no time in making an impact by firing the Red Devils to a hard-earned 3-2 victory at St Mary’s.

Ahead of a home clash against Sunderland, a staggering 330,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have drafted in the young Frenchman since the weekend, with his price rising from 8.0 to 8.2 in the last 48 hours. Produce the goods against the Black Cats and the bandwagon will kick into overdrive.

With few big-hitters justifying their price tags, Fantasy managers are prepared to turn to the form forwards to fire them up the rankings. Analysis of Martial’s displays for Monaco last year – where he racked up eight goals and an assist over nine league appearances between early March and early May – indicates he’s a confidence striker clearly capable of embarking on scoring streaks.

Certainly, United’s schedule directly after the Sunderland encounter – (ars, eve, MCI) – is anything but straightforward and does suggest a degree of caution. Given that they’ve just put six past Liverpool and the Saints in their last two, though, there’s plenty of reason for optimism that Van Gaal’s men, and Martial, can cement their fixture-proof status.

The Team

A 2-1 win over Newcastle earned Watford a second straight win as Quique Sanchez Flores’ men quickly adapt to life in the Premier League.

After ending Swansea’s unbeaten record in Gameweek 5, the Hornets have maintained momentum under the savvy Spaniard, with Odion Ighalo’s brace at St James’ Park taking his tally to four strikes in the opening six. At a price of just 5.1, the Nigerian has become vital to Watford’s survival quest, having netted all but one of his side’s five goals to date. Ighalo climbed to second in the FPL forward standings on the back of his weekend 13-point return, yet still sits in just 3% of sides, whilst Troy Deeney’s (5.3) trio of assists have also kept his points ticking over, despite his failure to score so far.

It’s not just up front that Watford look great value, though. Flores’ men have conceded just five goals so far – only Spurs and Man City’s backlines have been breached on fewer occasions. Indeed, Watford are the only side yet to concede at home and, having chalked up clean sheets against West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, the likes of Heurelho Gomes, Allan Nyom, Craig Cathcart and Sebastian Prodl offer budget rotation options at just 4.5 apiece.

With Palace, Bournemouth, Stoke and West Ham in the next five, investing in Flores’ main men could well prove a valid tactic as the former Atletico Madrid manager looks to continue his side’s impressive return to the top-flight.

The Talking Point

Back-to-back home wins over Maccabi Tel Aviv and Arsenal have helped spark Chelsea’s flagging season into life and reignited our interest in Jose Mourinho’s key protagonists.

With Eden Hazard opening his account for the campaign in the 2-0 triumph over Arsene Wenger’s outfit, the Belgian is back on the menu as the Blues prepare for a very enticing run of fixtures. Given that Diego Costa could be set for a three-match ban, Hazard’s appeal is heightened at a time where most premium midfield alternatives are toiling – Alexis Sanchez continues to struggle for form, whilst David Silva’s injury worries have kept him sidelined for City’s last two league outings.

Back-to-back clean sheets have also elevated the Blues’ defence after a less-than-impressive opening few matches. With Thibaut Courtois sidelined for the next few weeks, and John Terry no longer a reliable starter, Asmir Begovic (5.0) and Kurt Zouma could soon become the flavour of the month. The latter served up a 15-point return against the Gunners and with Mourinho looking to play a high defensive line, the 5.4-priced Zouma has now started each of the last four Gameweeks. Cesar Azpilicuata, at 6.0, still looks a more secure option, having played from start to finish in all but one of the first six fixtures.

With clashes against Newcastle, Southampton, Villa and West Ham in the following four, Chelsea certainly have the schedule to build on their recent progress and shake up our Fantasy thinking as Mourinho’s men belatedly rediscover their title-winning form.

If Gomez is benched, he's likely to stay there. Can't see Rodgers putting him on to defend a one goal lead at home to AVL. If Gomez starts, he should play 60.

    Striker Situation !
With Benteke most likely out for the weekend. Who are you guys looking at?
    I've short-listed a few : Pelle, Sakho, Ighalo, Wilson (don't want Martial)

    Thoughts amongst these?

Would Sakho's game time be limited by Carroll's return?
And are you convinced that Watford will create enough chances for Ighalo?

    Thoughts on this wildcard

    Butland / Mcarthy

wouldn't get mccarthy, about to be dropped - same with targett, but understand the need for cheapness

I would get hazard over sanchez and downgrade kdb to ya ya - that way you have the cash to do targett to fonte or cresswell and mccarthy to myhill

there's a lot of holes in the wildcard for me - no west brom defence, no west ham attack, still selecting sanchez for no reason whatsoever etc etc

Mccarthy, Kolarov, Targett, Zouma all prone to rotation...

Downgrade one of midfield/forward to a bench player and upgrade your defence

with everyone getting Ighalo, could deeney actually be a great little differential this week... he's still nailed for 90 mins on pens and getting assists - surely the goals will come

haven't watched a lot of watford, any fans care to comment?

    1. pompeyfan

you don't need a differential to Ighalo. Their ownership is so low you should just get the one who you think will score the most points (as always in fact)

    @BOC610

If Martial is to be rested, it'll be agaisnt Ipswich on Wednesday imo. LVG said he never expected Martial to have the impact he's having so early and that he's very important to the team already.
No chance he's rested agaisnt the bottom team in the league. Makes 0 sense!

I thought you wanted to get rid? I own Myhill and McCarthy as well.

Looked a bit shaky against Spurs and Pards blamed him for the goal. Not sure how it will pan out

Wba performing well defensively i can't see lindegaard to oust myhill at the moment. Still, do you think lindegaard gets the nod any time soon? Surely he wouldn't make a transfer without a prospect of starts, being in periphery for years in man utd..

Taking out Benteke for a hit.

    Who for?

    A) Martial (missed the rises, only really has sunderland)
    B) Pelle (Better fixtures)
    C) Other?

Timing - see below. I'm tempted to go with Gomis. Nailed on, with pens and decent fixtures for a decent team. May then switch Wilson to Pelle after GW8

    What to do with Benteke?

There's no need for BR to take a risk with him this week given Sturridge and Ings are fit, so perhaps it's time to boot the big Belgian out despite them having AVL this week. The contenders (I have ignored Aguero and Wilson as most of us already have them...or at least I do 🙂 :

    A) Pelle - looks a big threat and on form. Fixtures are a little iffy however

    B) Martial - ticks the form box, and looks clinical, but 2 of his chances were gifted to him and otherwise he's not getting many. That conversion rate surely can't continue either. He's also new to the premiership so LVG could protect him, and the fixtures after this week are horrible. He's the sexy pick.

    C) Ighalo - super cheap and on form. Less goals in Watford though so he'd likely need to continue his 100% (you read that right) involvement in Watford goals to maintain a decent output.

    D) Vardy - in form for an attacking team and cheap. Would likely mean a double up with Mahrez though. Fixtures aren't great either.

    E) Gomis - another good option with fixtures about to turn.

This is my conundrum. Got Aguero and Wilson too, and held off getting Benteke out till now. The plan is to wait until the cup games are done, and reassess, but it seems difficult to ignore Martial vs Sunderland, even if he blanks and has poor fixtures afterwards.

      F) Son - Lighting in a bottle, likely to be involved in a number of goals over the coming weeks, and in fine form. PUNTY

Very punty, but he's looked dangerous so far. I tend to avoid reverse OOP though, so I'd need to see Spurs improve going forwards first.

I'm tempted with Tekkers -> Gomis this week and then Wilson -> Pelle in GW9.

      Hello just what I need.

I am thinking Pelle at the moment. Martial hasn't got longevity at the moment because of fixtures. Ighalo is another option. Problem with vardy is I have too many Leicester players. Gomis only scores single goals and 0 baps.

Yeah, Pelle looks great, Only question mark for me is che/liv in the next 3 so can it wait a bit? From memory he doesn't often do it against the bigger teams (and yes that is a needle at United... 🙂 )

Rondon is a great shout. Superb player with an excellent history (albeit outside of the EPL).

I'd say there's several really good options there- you can't really go too far wrong with any of them based on current information.

    Current team:

    Butland Schmeicel
    Kolarov Francis Cedric Gomez Francis
    Hazard Sanchez Yaya Mahrez Westwood
    Aguero Wilson Sakho

    2FTs, 0.2 itb

    Which is better?

    A- Sanchez + Saylor > Azpi + Mata/Payet
    B- Cedric + Schmeicel > Nyom + Begovic
    C- Gomez > Nyom
    D-other ?
