Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 8

Gameweek 8 saw two more players topple off the Suspension Tightrope as we head into the second international break of the season. Sunderland centre-back Sebastian Coates was the first guilty party after earning his fifth yellow of 2015/16 in the second half of yesterday’s home draw against West Ham.

Coates will now miss the Black Cats’ trip to West Brom next time out as the Wearsiders prepare for life without Dick Advocaat after the Dutchman resigned earlier today.

This afternoon, Coates was joined by Tottenham’s Eric Dier, who has now been booked in five of the first eight league matches in his new central midfield role. The 10%-owned defender, who had been drafted in by over 25,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prior to today’s caution, will now miss the Gameweek 9 home encounter with Liverpool.

Despite losing those two to suspension, the Tightrope now boasts ten faces – three more than last weekend.

Ciaran Clark, Jeffrey Schlupp, Jack Colback, Billy Jones and Dele Alli all remain on four yellows and are joined by five new entries this time round. City pair Eliaquim Mangala and Fernandinho incurred the referee’s wrath in yesterday’s 6-1 romp over Newcastle at the Etihad, whilst West Ham’s Mark Noble is another fresh recruit after collecting a yellow card in the 2-2 stalemate at Sunderland.

Oriol Romeu is also added to the mix. The midfielder picked up his fourth caution in as many league starts for Southampton against former club Chelsea yesterday – he’s managed that feat in just 371 minutes of top-flight action. Earlier today, United full-back Matteo Darmian found his way into the referee’s notebook in the 3-0 loss to Arsenal.

The weekend brought further woe for the Black Cats, with Jeremain Lens set to miss the Gameweek 9 trip to the Hawthorns. The Dutchman – whose goal in yesterday’s draw means he played a part in five of the Wearsiders’ eight goals under Advocaat – was dismissed after receiving cautions for fouls on Carl Jenkinson and Winston Reid either side of the half-time break against the Hammers.

In terms of newly available players, Chelsea’s Diego Costa, Watford’s Valon Behrami and Everton wide man Kevin Mirallas are all in the frame in Gameweek 9 after they served the last of three-match bans for violent conduct this weekend.

You can't have Howard through Everton's nightmare fixture run and then ditch him when they turn!

Cresswell's absolute gold in that team at that price.

      Kolarov is Kolarov.

      Azpi should come good eventually.

Francis is one of the top 3 options in that price bracket.

Targett needs to be shipped at some stage but not urgent with the others you have.

Just wondering if I should do Howard => Cech

Not too sure with Cresswell though,

Kolarov's mins when Clichy returns? Guess we'll have to wait and see

        Francis isn't going anywhere =)

Morning all. 116, where the hell did that come from!? I was in Bath with friends, in a pub with no wifi, heard City were 0-1, then someone told me after the match what had happened...really thought it was a wind up.

    Oh, and is Doosra around?

Of course, and as I said below, there was logic behind it; it's just funny when it's proven wrong in such a ridiculous manner. I mean, I was in the keep Aguero camp, but five!?

Still, wasn't your argument that he's in poor form, as compared for example to Pelle or Sanchez, because of a low shot accuracy, which was a bad argument in more than one way.

Yes it was And it is FAR from being a POOR argument.

                  Just relating the facts.

I warned you, you were wrong about your facts. Aguero's shot accuracy has been splendid - out of the unblocked shots - but more than one third of Aguero's shots had been blocked prior to Newcastle match.

The blocks/shots rate is extremely unstable, very much a question of luck, so it was always going to regress towards the mean, he was never going to have over one third of his shots blocked all season.

And lo and behold, against Newcastle he had 0 shots blocked, and all of the sudden, there were goals.

Also, even if his shot accuracy was poor, which it never was, it, too, would have been likely to come up to _his_ normal in the long run.

Sorry, but this is just crap. Agüero had 2 shots on target in his previous four Premier League games.

Aguero, all season shots before Newcastle:

9 on target, 7 off target, 9 blocked.

In the 4 matches you refer to 7 shots inside the box blocked, which was 50% of his shot total, 64% of his SiB, an absolutely unsustainable rate with his shot numbers. And after them, against Gladbach, only one blocked and all of the sudden 4 shots on target.

And still, the 2nd point was that you make your statistical argument wrong.

I can't understand why the word "Fact" is being used.

Surly it wasn't a fact that Aguero scored 5 goals before he did.

Neither was it a fact that all statistics proved that he wouldn't score GW8.

Fact is, you have a large number of factors you can use to make a decision.

One of these factors are that Aguero is a very very good striker. Probably the best in PL.

Maybe it's because you don't understand quite well the word fact? Given out not only by your misunderstanding of what we discuss as facts, but also by your clear value-judgment that you state as a fact.

Fact is, Aguero had a 56% shot accuracy of unblocked shots in PL this season before Newcastle match. That's the fact we're discussing, because it is a fact that matters for how Aguero has been performing. And the other thing, then, we are discussing is what can we deduce from this and other facts for his future performances. If you can't follow, maybe better to not join the discussion then.

Probably best not to accuse someone of abusing if that's the best evidence for it.

Come off it EH. Doosra is a very opinionated, stubborn poster. There is nothing wrong with that in itself, but he posted about Aguero and the argument to ditch him a lot last week. There was logic behind it, but when you say that Aguero is failing/going to fail, and then he scores FIVE in 20 minutes, how can you not expect some stick? I know Doosra is the most popular poster on here, but he doesn't deserve special treatment. It is not abuse, it's stick about a fantasy football game.

Doosra thinks long term. One word for those who don't. Shortsightedness.

Blimey, it's a light hearted comment because Doosra and I discussed Aguero last week, then Aguero goes and hits 5. I'd also argue that ditching Aguero because of slightly poor form is an extremely short sighted move, but aside from that, why is a bit of gentle stick suddenly frowned upon because it's Doosra? If this was, say, Daniel I was referring to, it would be a very different story.

Oh come on Doos, no need to be so bitter. You know I'm right, it is a bit silly to call it shortsightedness (as reply to SS not you) to keep a massively prolific striker for a long term - because that's how stats work, they're only true for long term, single matches are often anomalous, you just have to see out all the anomalies on the way.

Yes, I know that. But you are more or less ignoring the last four matches before Newcastle.

I accept that we have reasonable debates, most of the time. But others have not been at all reasonable, and, as above, a LOT have been quite underhand.

Honestly, the people above, in this thread (e.g. Doolittle, Fitzy, Machine...), are very light-hearted about this and I think you should be more so as well. I'm not sure if there are others somewhere, I haven't been reading the Daily Doosra Abuse.

And, back to the real issue, I am not ignoring those matches. Were his stats the best of all players in them? No. Were they good enough to captain him against the worst team of the league? Of course they were! And to keep him, even more so, seen City's outrageously good fixtures and strong team stats. He was always going to get involved when City smash their opponents, and they were and still are going to smash some of these.

Good morning guys I have 2 questions for your good selves.

    1) Do you think KDB will outscore the likes of the mid-price alternatives such as Mane, Mata, Payet, Erikson, etc significantly enough to be worth the extra 2 mil?

    2) On what you have seen of the season so far, who are your must have defenders to go with in the long term?

    1. Teror
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

      1. Yes. KDB looks shi.t hot.

      2. No one seems must-have. They've all been unreliable, cept maybe Kolarov. I suppose Kompany when he returns from injury could be called a must have.

      1. Junebug
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah I think KDB looks like he will have a great season and is the better choice over Silva/YYT

Kolarov aside, Im struggling to see who the outstanding candidiates are. Kompany is definitely a good pick when he's back fit, probably Bellerin too. Darmian who I thought was a good choice early season, hasnt lived up to potential. It seems that maybe the better option could be to go for short term picks from teams who have good upcoming fixtures.

With all this focus on Mane/Pelle and Sanchez, what about Eriksen, 2 sublime free kicks against Swansea.

He is a fantastic player and a good FPL pick - you have to stick with him though as he normally scores in batches.

Had a solid week but now I need advice on what's next. Do I wait for internationals or do I fix my obvious issues at the back? Or perhaps I should look for a way to bring one more of the popular picks in my team, like KDB/Mane...

    Butland/McCarthy

    Kolarov/Bellerin/Evans/Targett/RichardsON(I know)

    Alexis/Sako/Mahrez/Payet/Eriksen

    Aguero/Martial/Pelle

    Thanks in advance!

What has been your season defining move?

Some lovely greens, a score of 115 and i'm bloody happy. My season defining move was getting KDB on his debut. Everyone was talking Silva and Yaya but i knew that if a guy has 30 goals and assists and if city is splurging 54M on him, there has to be quality. Seen him play a few times as well and he's super direct. Jumped onto him from the start and its turned my season around.

    Yours?

Having Wilson at the start, sticking with Sanchez and Aguero, getting KDB early, jumping on Mahrez before it was too late. Keeping Mane all season has also paid off in itself, but it has been at the expense of getting Payet.

Exactly the same here. Everyone else was adamant KDB wasn't a great option, now those same people are answering "KDB" for all midfield queries.

      He's a beast.

My season defining move wasn't a transfer.

It was going into my team at 11:44 am GMT on Saturday morning and changing the armband from Payet to Aguero.

Had I not have done that…………

I've only actually made 7 transfers all season and not played wildcard so a lot of my transfers have been fairly boring, like last week doing Morgan out for Francis.

Aguero (c) was great this week but that was the same choice as most of the 'serious' players this week. I suspect captaining Sanchez last week will have more bearing on my overall rank come the end of the season due to making more ground on FFS rivals.

Bringing in Sanchez on my wildcard, just before his hat trick.

I'd like to say that The3rdTurd's graph has been helping a hell of a lot. Helped me make my decisions to bring in Mane and Sanchez.

For me eventho i am extremely happy where i am at the moment was an awful transfer i did in a few weeks.

Gw 6 Silva Out for Hazard (Silva injured, Haz 2 points)
GW 7 Knee jerk Hazard out for Silva. (Hazard 10 points, silva Injured.)
gw 7 Silva > KDb for a hit (Silva still injured. )

Brilliant score this week but team still needs some sorting.

Who would you get rid of first? Sagna or Targett? Sagna just rose and it looks like Targett may be about to, giving me an extra 0.1 while selling!

Have 0.5 ITB. Who would you guys get?

    Already have Butland/Dawson/Azpi - rest defense/GK don't start.

I'd get rid of Sagna for Bellerin/Moreno or maybe even Gabriel. Arsenal's possession style along with Cech's presence make them pretty fixture proof. Bellerin/Nacho attacking aint bad either.

    Good morning!

Looking to get KDB in - how?

    Butland/Ruddy
    Kolarov - Azp - Evans - *Gomez* - Francis
    Mata - Sanchez - Payet - Mahrez - Wanyama
    Aguero - Vardy - Martial

    1.1 ITB and 1 FT

    1)
    Mata -> KDB
    Gomez -> 4.0

    2)
    Mata -> KDB
    Butland -> Hennesey

    3)
    Gomez -> Davies

    4)
    Save

    Cheers for all advice 🙂

      4 probably. Don't get a 4.0 defender, especially as Evans/Franics fixtures turn.
and Hennesey will lose his spot to Speroni.

I'd probably do 3 if I had to make a transfer

    Big hitters: KDB - 15
    Sanchez - 16
    Payet - 10
    Vardy - 9
    Kun(c) - 50
    Hangeland - 6

I'm in the clouds with my choices, wildcard on point!
