Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 9

Our midweek regular returns this evening as we give you an early heads-up on our Scout Picks thinking for the Gameweek ahead. This list of 22 players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the week unfolds.

For Gameweek 9, here’s who is currently in our thinking…

Goalkeepers

We’re eyeing up a trusted pair of hands and a potential gamble in this position.

Boaz Myhill (4.7) lies second in the Fantasy Premier League keeper rankings behind Heurelho Gomes, having chalked up seven save points and six bonus points this term. A home tie against Sunderland – who drew blanks in their last two road clashes – looks conducive to West Bromwich Albion’s fourth clean sheet in six, despite recent form and injuries in the Baggies backline. We have Craig Dawson as an additional rearguard asset, should we opt for our second keeper option.

That brings in a new and unexpected name to the Scout Picks Squad, as Rob Elliot is considered in the light of Tim Krul’s season-ending knee injury. The Toon welcome a Norwich City outfit that’s chalked up just three goals in their previous three road encounters and, with a price tag of 4.0, Elliot already looks a viable short-term option whilst Karl Darlow remains sidelined with an ankle problem – reports today confirm that this will be at least another three weeks.

Defenders

Daryl Janmaat would be our preferred coverage of the Magpies’ dubious potential this weekend. Over the last four Gameweeks, no defender has amassed more attempts (nine), shots inside the box (five) and on target (six), underlining his attacking threat against a Canaries defence that’s failed to tally a single clean sheet. At 4.9, we’re waiting on Janmaat’s availability following his withdrawal from the Dutch squad through injury – the club today indicated that they were confident that Janmaat would be in contention.

It’s a similar story with Aleksandar Kolarov who is also an injury doubt. He’s bagged two goals in as many outings for Serbia during the international break, reaffirming his attacking prowess from left-back. No team has fashioned more attempts at home (86) than Manchester City, which suggests that the 6.2-priced defender will be afforded shooting opportunities when Bournemouth pay a visit. However, we’re waiting on an update from the Etihad following a hamstring injury sustained whilst on duty; we may well draft in Vincent Kompany to replace the Serb if the City skipper is cleared for the Cherries encounter.

Cezar Azpilicueta (6.0) at least presents a safe route into the Chelsea rearguard as they prepare to fend off a Villa attack that’s drawn two blanks and ranked second-bottom for big chances (three) in the last trio of Gameweeks. We may yet swap out Azpilicueta and call on Kurt Zouma, at 5.5, if we’re convinced that Jose Mourinho will recall the Frenchman following the Saints reverse – we expect this to be the case; Zouma may even get the call at right-back following confirmation of Branislav Ivanovic’s absence.

The aforementioned Craig Dawson, meanwhile, boasts security of starts in the Baggies’ rearguard and ranks among the top five defenders for attempts (seven) and shots inside the (five) across the season.

Valued at just 4.9, Gabriel serves as the cut-price route into Arsenal’s defence ahead of a trip to Watford, who rank bottom over the last four Gameweeks for shots on target (eight). We’re opting for the Brazilian, over our preferred Watchlist candidate, Hector Bellerin, due to the nagging doubt over rotation on the eve of Arsenal’s now vital Champions League clash with Bayern on Tuesday.

Federico Fernandez (5.0) completes our defensive selection. Aside from Kyle Naughton, he is the only other Swansea defender to fashion an attempt this term (six attempts, five shots inside the box), rendering Fernandez the choice pick ahead of a home tie against Stoke City. Up until Gameweek 8, Naughton was our weapon of choice in the Swans’ rearguard but his absence against Spurs now casts short-term doubt over his security of starts after Angel Rangel impressed at right-back in the 2-2 stalemate.

Midfielders

Alexis Sanchez (11.2) banished his barren spell in spectacular fashion over the last two Gameweeks with a five-goal haul. Considering that Arsenal have carded 11 more shots inside the box (58) than any other outfit on their travels, the Hornets’ organised defence are in for a stern test of their credentials. Although there is some concern over possible rotation in the Gunners’ lineup with the Bayern tie in mind, we feel that Sanchez is too vital to the Arsenal cause for Arsene Wenger to risk a teamsheet surprise. We’re not so certain on Theo Walcott, though.

Elsewhere in the big-hitter bracket, Kevin De Bruyne (10.3) has notched three goals and two assists in his last three outings and could profit from the fact that Bournemouth have surrendered the second most big chances (11) away from home. With Sergio Aguero almost certainly out of the equation, the in-form Belgian looks a Scout Picks no-brainer and a leading captain candidate.

Eden Hazard (11.3) has delivered attacking returns in each of his previous three starts (one goal and three assists) and ranks third among midfielders for key passes (15) since Gameweek 5. The Villains are likely to aid the Belgian’s pursuit of goals, having shipped eight in their previous three away matches. We’re not certain if we’ll opt for Chelsea attacking cover and, if so, whether Hazard will get the nod over Diego Costa. Right now, we’re looking to work Hazard’s lofty price tag into our Picks XI.

Dimitri Payet (8.1) racked up three more key passes (23) than any of his counterparts over the last four Gameweeks, which bodes well for the Hammers’ trip to Selhurst Park. In opposition, Yohan Cabaye ranks fifth among midfielders for attempts (eight) over the last two Gameweeks and is well placed for profit against a Hammers side that’s placed third for shots conceded inside the box (43) away from home.

Following two impressive displays in an England shirt, Ross Barkley’s form is currently hard to ignore. He’ll be looking to impress again on the big stage and punish a Manchester United team that has seen their defence breached on seven occasions in their previous three trips away from Old Trafford.

Swansea’s Andre Ayew (7.2) will be encouraged by the revelation that Stoke have conceded eight more big chances (19) than any team away from home, while our final midfield slot goes to Sadio Mane (7.9). The Senegal international has recorded two goals and three assists in as many starts and now enjoys a home clash against a Leicester City side that’s conceded 10 times in four matches. Mane or Graziano Pelle look certain to make the Picks XI come Friday.

Forwards

Pelle (8.1) is the league’s top-scoring forward (54) this season, having tallied five goals and assists. Moreover, the Italy international sits atop the summit of the forwards leaderboard over the last six Gameweeks for attempts (25) and shots inside the box (23).

Jamie Vardy (6.7) will be in opposition at St Mary’s and goes into the match having drawn just one blank in eight outings this campaign, netting six goals in his previous five starts. Only Arsenal (10) netted more than the Foxes (nine) over the last four Gameweeks, suggesting that the Saints could struggle to register a shut-out.

In the last four Gameweeks, only two forwards mustered more shots on target than Romelu Lukaku (seven). The 8.3-priced striker bagged three goals and two assists over that period so should enter the Red Devils head-to-head brimming with confidence. In the absence of Sergio Aguero, Wilfried Bony (8.2) will spearhead a Sky Blues attack that recorded 16 more attempts (93) than any side over the last four Gameweeks. It might be too simplistic to switch Bony in for Aguero but, right now, we’re sorely tempted.

The fact is, viable options elsewhere are far from plentiful. Certainly Diego Costa (10.9) will be desperate to find form following his three-match suspension but Chelsea’s lack of confidence has to be factor that casts doubt over his potential. Having said that, only two teams allowed more shots inside the box (22) than Villa across the past two Gameweeks, exposing a vulnerability that Costa could eagerly exploit.

Our final squad spot is an even bigger gamble. Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic (6.2) opened his account last time out against Man City so will fancy his chances against Norwich’s more generous defence this Gameweek – if he can ensure he remains on the pitch.

THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

Gameweek 8 Community Champion Supersonic was brought down to earth with a bump after his gamble to go without Sergio Aguero failed to pay off and he mustered just 46 points, which was 38 points behind the Scout Picks. Massive still retains top spot, then – he beat us by 16 points in Gameweek 6 and stays in the lead to claim the £100 Amazon voucher.

The Community Champion for Gameweek 9, as selected by our lottery, is Meinhoff. He is now in his sixth season, with last year’s rank of 14,627 his highest.

Ok so I know this is different from a lot of the teams here, but I'm thinking of doing 2 for free:

    Ayew --> Walcott
    Aguero --> Sturridge

    Butland (Schmeichel)

    Kolorov, Ward, Darmian (Gomez, Richards)

    Walcott, KDB, Mahrez, Payet (Barkley)

    Sturridge, Gomis, Martial

Thoughts? Have 2FT and having a hard time going into the next game week with Pelle, Gomis, Martial...

I like those two tranafers. A bit different to the norm. But could really pay off. Thinking about Walcott myself. A good bit of analysis on him on the BBC website by Pat Nevin.

Both very nice transfers if you feel like they will start and stay uninjured.

Fairly big ifs but a gamble that could pay off handsomely.

what is the logic behind playing the AOA chip so early in the season?

surely the best time to play is when you have a much larger team value (usually towards the end of the season), by then you would have enough funds to upgrade your 5th mid or 3rd striker to decent players. so why are so many considering/considered it at this stage of the season?

I've been thinking about this, and I think it's people might be looking for an advantage now, rather than waiting for later in the season where the 10 or so extra points may not matter as much? Maybe? I'm not sure, I'm waiting...

The difference is negligible throughout the season really. For one thing, later in the season you have higher team value but that is also because good players cost more.

You could still be getting the same players out there at a higher cost.

yes read a hot topic in the past suggesting the last game of the season is probably the best time to use it. but with so many uncertainties with rotations in gw38 (some teams have nothing left to play for and league position is already confirmed), perhaps somewhere around gw35-37 would be ideal!

Interesting stats. I agree save percentages are overlooked. I am also wondering about teams that encourage shots outside the box.

E.g. shots conceded outside box/ total shots could be a good indicator of who will get a higher ratio of saves to goals conceded. Since, regardless of keeper quality, they're more likely to save the long shots.

      thoughts?

True. The stats only really tell part of the story. Hennessey hasn't been especially brilliant - it's just the shots against him have been mostly long rangers and lacked quality. Not really a big enough sample to prove his form.

Kind of tempted to transfer him out, but I think that would be just stopid after one no show.
If he's benched again in next two, then it could be time to let go imo.

This is my problem too. With so much value invested in him it feels too final.

Also, he's a cheap mid in an attacking team with pens and set pieces. Gold dust!

I said it at the time and I'll say it again- it should be seriously concerning to Mahrez owners (myself included) that 1) he got benched because of his defensive frailties against NORWICH of all teams, and 2) he didn't even make it off the bench.

I heard an interesting interview of Mark Schwarzer on TalkSport earlier in the season. Everyone was praising Mahrez, but some of the underlying comments from Schwarzer were basically hinting that Mahrez had weaknesses- and basically is a bit lazy.

I'm sticking for now, but its a massive 'watch this space' for me.

        3) They won without him.

I expect him to start this weekend but at the same time it wouldn't be crazy for Ranieri to stick with a winning team. If he was worried about Norwich attacking down the flanks surely he has to be worried about Tadic and Mane.

    Pellè - Berahino

    Mccarthy; Ighalo, Francis, Lovren

Lukaku better long term but those next two Chelsea fixtures are tempting.

      1. sleecc

I'd gamble on Costa if I have a WC, but the reason I am leaning towards Lukaku is it saves me 1FT in the future to get back Kun.

        1. S.Kuqi
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

Assuming Kun is out for 4 weeks and he will probably need 2 weeks to gain match fitness and sharpness. No need to worry him until december.

            • 8 Years

The logic behind is I do not have WC, and my the other attackers are Pelle & Vardy, if I were to get Costa, I will not be able to do Pelle > Kun when Soton's fixture turn bad which is around the time Kun is back, I can only do Costa > Kun, and deal with Pelle with another FT. But getting Lukaku now, I will have the flexibility whether to keep Lukaku or continue to double Soton (Pelle & Mane) once Kun is back, this helps me save an FT.

Is there any logic in ditching Targett this week over Sagna? With a slim hope Sagna will start.

I have two free transfers, other is being used on Aguero replacement. Looking at Gabriel or Bellerin

Yes. I am assuming money isn't an issue so if you have 2 probable non-starters, drop the one less likely to play/ get points.

      Can downgrade sagna later

Who else would you suggest for 4.3m or less?

Unless I transfer out one of Kolarov, Cedric or Hoolahan instead. But getting shot of Gomez is solving that dead spot.

This "golden generation" tag given to every second team these days. I recall it used to be earned by _winning_ gold medals - usually a youth generation that won either EC or WC at some age group. Say, Sweden, now, could speak about a golden generation. But what have Wales and Belgium, for example, won?

The point is none of them have deserved it yet, but people use it about both Wales and Belgium, probably some use it for Croatia too.

LOL. how fecking dim are you? It's not me who is fixated to the word gold, but all those people calling the current Welsh NT a golden generation. In football, the winners get gold medal. Hence, _golden_ generation for winners. If Wales have a good team now, call it a _good_ generation. If they win gold, then call them a _golden_ generation.

I just don't know why you think people have to win a gold medal to be called a golden generation.

It's not a literal adjective. Golden implies the best, that doesn't have to mean they win some lucky penalty shootout. It can just mean it contains the best players. People talk about the golden years of music, no medals.

In sport a golden generation is an exceptionally gifted group of players of similar age, whose achievements reach or are expected to reach a level of success that would be considered great for that country.

Australia had a golden generation because they qualified for a World Cup, engalnd had one because the players had more domestic and champions league winners medals than any team in England's history and they were expected to do great things.

"n sport a golden generation is an exceptionally gifted group of players of similar age, whose achievements reach or are expected to reach a level of success that would be considered great for that country."

Straight from wiki, isn't it! 😀

Is there anything there to back that up? no there is not. My whole point was that the trend of calling generations "golden" prematurely and without achievements worthy of gold is stupid. That you tell now that teams are called golden for that reason, is begging the question.

Golden generation was used about teams that won EC's or WC's at youth stages, because it was a generation (the youth internationals are controlled by their birth year) that won gold, and showed a lot of promise in continuation, such as Portugal 1989 and 1991, or at adult stage at relatively young age such as France 1998 and 2000.

There is no generation of currently playing Welsh or Belgium players that has won anything on international stage. They haven't even got decent success, neither in youth nor in adult competitions. Welsh youth teams haven't made any international tournament. Belgium youth teams very few and usually lost their group when made it, best being 2007 2nd of their group behind Netherlands in U21 EC (and consecutive knockout round defeat to Serbia).

So maybe that's what it used to mean but clearly language has evolved (as it always does) and now it means something different.

Besides by your logic Brazil would have like 5 golden generations

Clearly people just use words loosely so that they lose their specific meaning, as they often do.

Brazil obviously has more golden generations than others. The 1964-66 (born) generation who won gold first in u20's 1983 and 1985 and then on adult stage in their old age 1994 is a prime example of a golden generation that fulfilled its promises. Although the star player Romario didn't make these youth WC teams, he did play for the Olympic team 1988, so was involved from young age, and anyway was the same generation.

It's not just 'people' though is it? It's the media which literally changes the linguistic zeitgeist and therefore the meaning behind a phrase. It's been used this way for 10-20 years now.

Probably because your meaning prevents most of the countries in the world from having a golden generation.

It depends if you're talking about them within the context of the their country or the world. These Welsh and Belgian teams are the golden generation of players from their countries. Are they likely to win anything? No. That's not their fault. But Belgium have never had a line up like this and Wales have some phenomenal players after years of Craig Bellamy.

You sir, have a real negativity about you.

Belgium's last "golden generation" finished runner-ups in EC 1980 and were in semi-finals in World Cup 1986. That was a team that qualified to almost every final tournament for over 20 years from 1980 to 2002 (they missed the EC 1992) and beat giants of the time, such as the Netherlands and Argentina. They could somehow justify the tag "golden generation", lathough they, either, didn't win gold. The current "golden generation" hasn't achieved success anywhere near as good as to what Belgium was used to not so long ago. Definitely the "golden" tag is as premature as Obama's Nobel price.

Alright well give them time, so at they have had one tournement where they lost in the quarter final to Argentina.

I think the golden generation tag is based on the players in their team in the context of their history much like Englands was.

Every memeber their team is playing at the highest club level.

In big clubs, yes, and yet the team is winning nothing. And, again, the team of 1982's beat the Argentina team who back then were both holding (1978) and future (1986) champions. What is the best team that the current "golden generation" has won in a competitive match? Russia? Algeria? The current core is mostly 26-27 year-old, Hazard and Lukaku being younger than the 1987-89 generations. Belgium 1980 players who won silver were largely from 21 (Vandenbergh) to 27-year-old (Pfaff, Gerets). A slightly renewed crew with likes of Vercauteren (then 25) involved won Argentina and Netherlands two years later. And the likes of Van Der Elst, Scifo, Claesen, Vervoort and Demol played in 1986 WC semi-finals at age of 20 (Claesen bit older than the others though, probably 23 by then).

Hmm... they also missed some others, 1988 and 1996 EC's, but anyway, during 80's and 90's they were in almost every tournament back when there were only 8 teams in Euros (16 from 1996 on) and 24 teams in the World Cup.
