Spot the Differential

Spot the Differential – Gameweek 10

Our regular quest for the unfashionable and underused finds us turning to Stoke’s own Lionel Messi impersonator, Palace’s wide-man turned striker and an Arsenal asset set to benefit from Aaron Ramsey’s injury.

Bojan Krkic

A three-match winning streak has augmented the appeal of Stoke’s attacking recruits, with the return of Bojan Krkic proving the catalyst to a turnaround in form. The former Barcelona graduate steered the Potters to victory over Swansea last Monday with a spot-kick, marking his second goal in four outings that have harvested ten points for the Staffordshire outfit.

Notwithstanding his classification as a forward by the Fantasy Premier League, the 5.3-priced Bojan – who operates from the number-ten berth – could still offer great value by virtue of his budget price tag and penalty duty.

Since ending their six-match winless spell, Stoke have improved on the attacking front – as evidenced by the fact that only five teams amassed more big chances (seven) over the last three Gameweeks. Next on the agenda for Mark Hughes’ men is a home tie against Watford, who rank third for big chances conceded (11) in the last four, before trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the following four afford Bojan further opportunities to strengthen his case as a cut-price frontman.

Yannick Bolasie

Yannick Bolasie (6.2) hasn’t set the world alight this season – notching one goal in eight appearances – but he’s posted some impressive underlying statistics that hint towards imminent attacking returns. During the last four Gameweeks, only seven midfielders tallied more shots on target (five) than the DR Congo international, who ranked joint-top among his Crystal Palace counterparts for total attempts (10).

Bolasie will be licking his lips ahead of the Eagles’ trip to Leicester City for two reasons: Palace have been dominant away from home (only losing to Manchester City) and the Foxes’ defence has been generous over the last five Gameweeks (12 goals conceded). Palace rank fourth for big chances (11) in road matches, with the top three for that metric having played one more away fixture. Meanwhile, Claudio Ranieri’s charges place top for goals conceded (10) and second for shots inside the box conceded (47) at home.

What’s more, with Alan Pardew deprived of first choice striker options, Bolasie could again be tasked with leading the line as he did at Spurs earlier in the season.

The Eagles square up to Manchester United (home) and Liverpool (away) in their subsequent two fixtures, before embarking on back-to-back home ties against Sunderland and Newcastle United. Aside from the favourable meetings with the North-East clubs, Bolasie could come up trumps against the Red Devils, given that they’ve conceded seven goals in their last four away ties.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Now that Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out for at least a month with a hamstring complaint, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be hoping to cement a run of starts on the Arsenal right wing.

Given that the rest of Arsene Wenger’s attacking midfielders are priced in the premium bracket, Oxlade-Chamberlain – at a cost of just 5.6 in FPL – serves as a more affordable way to double up on the red-hot Gunners. Granted, his acquisition could be a gamble if Wenger opts for Theo Walcott on the right to accommodate Olivier Giroud, but we feel the Arsenal boss will be reluctant to tinker too much with a winning formula and thus allow Walcott to continue as the lone striker.

Certainly, the stats back up Arsenal’s swashbuckling form. Over the last three Gameweeks, only Manchester City (12) tallied more goals (11) than Wenger’s side, while no team matched the North London outfit’s haul of shots inside the box (45). As such, one would expect Oxlade-Chamberlain to be afforded his fair share of goal scoring opportunities.

Assuming Ramsey is sidelined for the four weeks, Oxlade-Chamberlain could earn starts against Everton, Swansea, Tottenham and West Brom. Although that quartet of fixtures is far from plain sailing, Arsene Wenger’s troops will feel confident in their ability to punish any side, bearing in mind they’ve beaten the likes of Manchester United and Bayern Munich in recent matches.

In my head, other people getting rid of Sako makes him more likely to start and score.

In reality I should never have bought in the first place.

      Zabaleta - Kompany - Otamendi - Kolarov

Sagna has a slight chance of starting ahead of Zab. Mangala may get in somewhere, Kompany should start.

            Kompanybis nailed

For the rest we don't really know.

Zabaleta has traditionally been first choice right back but has fallen way short of his best for 18 months. Sagna has played welling his absence so far this season.

Clichy seemed to have left back nailed down last season, injury has given Kolorov an opportunity and he's stepped up.

Mangala has yet to convince (demichelis stepped in numerous times) and then they've spent a fortune on ottomedi.

There's the info behind my statement.

As per Pelle's mysterious comments of wanting to have both Mangala and Otamendi on the pitch, I think there's an off chance of Kompany - Mangala - Otamendi all being in the starting lineup...just a wild thought

Not a rotation risk. There were reasons behind his benching, not anymore.

If you get a haul one game, then play Arsenal the week after and blank, that doesn't mean stats are showing regression.

    Myhill / McCarthy
Darmian, Bellerin, Janmaat / Nyom, Muniesa
Sanchez, de Bruyne, Payet, Mahrez / Westwood
    Pelle, Vardy, Ighalo

    1 FT, 8.2 ITB

    A) Save FT
    B) Westwood ---> Eriksen
    C) Ighalo ---> Kane/Lukaku/Bony

I'm still unsure if I should do Westwood ---> Eriksen...
I could get him this week and Lukaku/Bony next week for Ighalo.

These transfers would cause a big benching headache every week:
Sanchez, de Bruyne, Payet, Eriksen, Mahrez
    Pelle, Vardy, Lukaku/Bony

I could play them all next GW with the AOA chip but then I use the chip to start two attackers v WBA away. Also my defenders have quite ok fixtures:

    Darmian (cry)
    Bellerin (swa)
    Nyom (WHU)
    Janmaat (STK)
    Muniesa...

Using the chip seems like a waste ? And also Spurs playing Europa League yesterday is putting me off a bit but on the other side they have the Monday Night game v Villa in GW11.

Probably if Yaya is out. Bony may steal them though. Think Yaya will play anyway.

Any compelling reason to choose Sanchez or Vardy as captain over the other one?
E.g. would Palace defence be good or bad at dealing with Lei attack?
Where are the mismatches in personnel that one team can exploit over the other?

Anyone? Has this been a hot topic?

I don't know enough about tactics to know if one team or another is better suited to attacking/defending against certain opponents. Just seeing if there was some deeper logic we could look into.

                    Would you AOA chip this?

                    Myhill
                    Bellerin Darmian Kolorov
                    Sanchez KDB Walcott Payet Mahrez
                    Vardy Pelle

                    McCarthy Martial Whittaker Oxford

The argument is I would be happy to bench a derby defender but Martial has a tough game where as in future weeks Martial has good games but so does my defence so won't want to use it.

                            Vardy vs Mahrez for captaincy

Will vardy really score is 7 consecutive games?
Vardy has only had 2 double digit scores all season
                            Vardy has all the stats

Will Mahrez really get benched again after last week?
Mahrez has score 4 digit hauls so star and has only got solitary goals to get that
                            Mahrez on pens

Tough choice beginning to favour Mahrez although currently on Vardy

Currently on Mahrez. If he was 100% starter it'd be a no brainer.

Scoring in 6 consecutive games does not make you less likely to score in the seventh...

Having said that, I'm gambling on Mahrez.

But does it. Because if someone scores 6 in a row then surely the opposition will pay more attention to him making a 7th goal less likely. It works the other way too because if you score 6 in a row you are more confident thus more likely to score again. Ah well Mahrez it is

Need some advice please, my fellow mini league managers have Vardy "i do not" what i do have over them is Costa, iv'e already brought in Wijnaldum so my question is do i forfit 4 points to get Vardy is he really a must in any team or do i just go with what i have and hope that Vardy does not perform as he has been??

yes but i wouldnt take a 4 point hit for him when you got costa instead of him?

you haven't even told us who you intend to sell to get vardy in? and where are you in the ML? if your chasing then you dont want vardy for a hit if everyone else has him, you need a differential

Chasing the pack i am mid table and i would have swapped him for Martial our teams pretty much the same aprt from strikers.

I'm looking to get vardy in for Costa. Chelsea have been rubbish, Leicester got good fixtures, gives you money to upgrade elsewhere.

Seriously considering it, did last week. But he was lucky and Chelsea were poo midweek. OK I think I've convinced myself to not captain him
