Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope claimed a new victim this week as United’s Matteo Darmian earned his fifth yellow card of the campaign in yesterday’s goalless draw at Selhurst Park. Owned by 18% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the Italian now misses the home clash against West Brom and with Antonio Valencia still injured, Louis van Gaal has decisions to make at right back.

The Tightrope welcomed four new faces over the weekend, with 14 players now standing just one caution away from a single-match ban. Palace playmaker Yohan Cabaye, Swansea skipper Ashley Williams, Watford’s raiding right-back Allan Nyom and Liverpool midfielder Lucas are the latest recruits. The latter was perhaps a little fortunate not to earn a second yellow in the 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge after a foul on Ramires resulted in no more than a warning and proved a major post-match talking point.

Whilst Jose Mourinho was reluctant to comment for fear of FA disciplinary measures, Lucas, unsurprisingly, commended whistler Marc Clattenburg’s decision not to send him packing:

”They [Chelsea] will probably talk about it, it’s normal especially when you lose a game. The first three fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game probably were just fouls that maybe wouldn’t be a yellow card. Sometimes in my position you make fouls but more to stop the game and I think it was a good decision from the referee. He controlled the game very well, all the situations with the Chelsea players I think he dealt with it really well and I think it was a fair game.”

In terms of other new suspensions, Norwich will be without skipper Russell Martin for the Gameweek 12 home encounter against Swansea. The versatile defender was dismissed at City for denying a goal scoring opportunity – his handball in the box handed the hosts their first penalty.

Southampton will be devoid of Victor Wanyama’s services for next weekend’s trip to Sunderland. The Kenyan international avoided climbing onto the Tightrope after he was dismissed for collecting two bookings in this afternoon’s home win over Bournemouth – instead, he remains on three yellows and has been handed a one-match ban, thus returning in time for the Gameweek 13 clash against Stoke.

West Ham’s James Collins is set for a three-match ban after being dismissed for violent conduct during yesterday’s surprise loss to Watford as Slaven Bilic’s side lost for the first time on their travels this term.

After qualifying for the Europa League due to their fair play record, the Hammers have now received four red cards in the first 11 Gameweeks under their new manager, with Mark Noble (rescinded), Carl Jenkinson and Adrian the other parties concerned.

Bizarrely, this was the eighth red in just 11 Premier League matches involving West Ham. There has now been a sending off in each of their last four league outings, with Sunderland’s Jeremain Lens, Palace’s Dwight Gayle and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic all seeing red in the three fixtures prior to yesterday’s trip to Vicarage Road. Taking all competitions into account, there has been 12 red cards flashed over West Ham’s 18 fixtures with Bilic at the helm – the London club have been culpable on seven of those occasions.

Finally, reports this evening suggest Diego Costa could be set to escape retrospective action following another spat with nemesis Martin Skrtel. The Chelsea striker appeared to dig a boot into the Slovakian’s chest after both fell to the ground during the Reds’ 3-1 win but it’s believed that referee Clattenburg saw the incident and decided to take no further action.

Given that Costa has already served a three-match ban this season, this will be a huge relief for the under-fire Jose Mourinho if confirmed. Taking his previous ban into account, another stint on the sidelines for violent conduct would have earned Costa a four-match suspension this time around and forced him out of the upcoming league matches against Stoke, Norwich, Spurs and Bournemouth.

            Bellerin has attacking potential. I feel Swansea are just as likely concede away to Norwich as Arsenal are at home, even if it is the derby.

    Regarding the Optus/Foxtel thing last page

    Foxtel have apparently been 'outbid' by Optus. In 2016, Fox Sports wont be telecasting the EPL. Very very annoying.

      Disgraceful. I honestly didn't even know Optus still existed as a cable broadcaster. They will see a huge cross over of numbers from that alone. Foxtel just screwed themselves.

        Well that's it. Coutinho's fixtures are turning soon and Klopp has got them fired up. Only issue with Payet is that he's their best player and is likely to take all the bps when he has a good game.

            I'd say Ozil is definitely making himself as close to essential as you can be on current form at his price, even more so with the fixtures over the next 3-4 weeks..

            Also wouldn't want to not own Lukaku over the next 4.. Wouldn't be losing Vardy/Mahrez..

            Arsenal defensive cover a must plus at least 1 from United or Southampton

          No use picking players that has low ownership %(in say the top 10k). They need low ownership yes, but more importantly they need to have good FPL records, play for attacking/high scoring teams and ACTUALLY score more fpl points than the alternatives(that probably are heavily owned)

          So, that's a no for me as none of those ticking any of the boxes, other than low ownership.

      Depends who is in the Mini League. If its a bunch of people who do not follow what happens in fpl, than it is possible. If its people heavily involved in research and what not, i would say its highly unlikely.

      I firmly believe luck alone over 38 gw will not win your mini league.
      For me those who invest in team in terms of planning for fixtures/Rotation/Form/TV/MOTD/injuries/Suspensions/Transfers etc will beat Lady Luck all day.

    Relying on Bournemouth to keep a cleanie next week, hope they defend and keep the ball like they did in the second half v the Saints.

    Need to sort out my defence but not sure how to deal with it prior to Aguero's return.

    Butland McCarthy

    Kolarov Dawson Janmaat Richards Darmian

    I want to ship Butland for De Gea but that leaves me with a rather tight budget for Darmian and Richards replacements.

    a) Richards -> Moreno
    b) Butland -> De Gea
    c) Richards -> Bellerin/Van Dijk, deal with Aguero later

    Is now a good time to upgrade my 5th mid to Mane and play AOA? Seems convenient due to having plenty of Aguero cash. Would then revert back to 343 over the next few weeks.

        Yea i'm not convinced the chip is much use. I just don't want to play it down the line when i have Westwood or someone similar, seems pointless.

          My thinking as well and all of the players had really good fixtures, so it was as good time as any. Also, got the defenders right! Thats what makes it or breaks it i guess.

    I have a dream. One day, when a player scores, he will lift up his shirt and there will be a picture of a screenshot of himself as captain in his fpl team. That is when Fantasy Football will have made it

      What if a player misses a penalty and then lifts up his shirt to reveal the opposition goalkeeper in his FPL team?

    Which 1 would you play of these

    1) Moreno (CPL) + Bertrand (sun)
    2) Moreno(CPL) + Payet(EVE) for AOA chip
    3) Bertie(sun) + Payet for AOA chip
    4) Moreno (CPL) + Ozil(TOT) for AOA chip but after Payet-->Ozil
    5) Bertie + Ozil for AOA chip

    Was set on Moreno over Bertie but CPL have good record against Liverpool with scoring in all of last 6....Have to bench Payet only as cant bench Mahrez again and all my other attackers are strong

      Everton are not very good defending, Payet has every chance of scoring. Don't see a reason to get Ozil for him.

    Who’d you bench out of those:

    Sanchez (TOT) - KDB (avl) - Mane (sun) - Ayew (nor) - Mahrez (WAT)
    Pelle (sun) - Lukaku (whu) - Vardy (WAT)

    I think the only options are: Ayew, Mane, Lukaku or Pelle.
    But whom..?

    Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mane, Mahrez
    Pelle, Vardy, Ighalo

    McCarthy, Dawson, Francis, Nyom

    2 FT, 3.3 ITB

    What to do?

    A) Butland ---> DDG
    B) Dawson/Francis ----> Moreno
    C) Something else?

    Leaning towards A myself, Butland has terrible fixtures.
