Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope claimed a new victim this week as United’s Matteo Darmian earned his fifth yellow card of the campaign in yesterday’s goalless draw at Selhurst Park. Owned by 18% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the Italian now misses the home clash against West Brom and with Antonio Valencia still injured, Louis van Gaal has decisions to make at right back.

The Tightrope welcomed four new faces over the weekend, with 14 players now standing just one caution away from a single-match ban. Palace playmaker Yohan Cabaye, Swansea skipper Ashley Williams, Watford’s raiding right-back Allan Nyom and Liverpool midfielder Lucas are the latest recruits. The latter was perhaps a little fortunate not to earn a second yellow in the 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge after a foul on Ramires resulted in no more than a warning and proved a major post-match talking point.

Whilst Jose Mourinho was reluctant to comment for fear of FA disciplinary measures, Lucas, unsurprisingly, commended whistler Marc Clattenburg’s decision not to send him packing:

”They [Chelsea] will probably talk about it, it’s normal especially when you lose a game. The first three fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game probably were just fouls that maybe wouldn’t be a yellow card. Sometimes in my position you make fouls but more to stop the game and I think it was a good decision from the referee. He controlled the game very well, all the situations with the Chelsea players I think he dealt with it really well and I think it was a fair game.”

In terms of other new suspensions, Norwich will be without skipper Russell Martin for the Gameweek 12 home encounter against Swansea. The versatile defender was dismissed at City for denying a goal scoring opportunity – his handball in the box handed the hosts their first penalty.

Southampton will be devoid of Victor Wanyama’s services for next weekend’s trip to Sunderland. The Kenyan international avoided climbing onto the Tightrope after he was dismissed for collecting two bookings in this afternoon’s home win over Bournemouth – instead, he remains on three yellows and has been handed a one-match ban, thus returning in time for the Gameweek 13 clash against Stoke.

West Ham’s James Collins is set for a three-match ban after being dismissed for violent conduct during yesterday’s surprise loss to Watford as Slaven Bilic’s side lost for the first time on their travels this term.

After qualifying for the Europa League due to their fair play record, the Hammers have now received four red cards in the first 11 Gameweeks under their new manager, with Mark Noble (rescinded), Carl Jenkinson and Adrian the other parties concerned.

Bizarrely, this was the eighth red in just 11 Premier League matches involving West Ham. There has now been a sending off in each of their last four league outings, with Sunderland’s Jeremain Lens, Palace’s Dwight Gayle and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic all seeing red in the three fixtures prior to yesterday’s trip to Vicarage Road. Taking all competitions into account, there has been 12 red cards flashed over West Ham’s 18 fixtures with Bilic at the helm – the London club have been culpable on seven of those occasions.

Finally, reports this evening suggest Diego Costa could be set to escape retrospective action following another spat with nemesis Martin Skrtel. The Chelsea striker appeared to dig a boot into the Slovakian’s chest after both fell to the ground during the Reds’ 3-1 win but it’s believed that referee Clattenburg saw the incident and decided to take no further action.

Given that Costa has already served a three-match ban this season, this will be a huge relief for the under-fire Jose Mourinho if confirmed. Taking his previous ban into account, another stint on the sidelines for violent conduct would have earned Costa a four-match suspension this time around and forced him out of the upcoming league matches against Stoke, Norwich, Spurs and Bournemouth.

Probably VVD if you want a higher chance of netting immediate points, IMO.

Though, I'd prefer Bellerin long term

Missed a couple of good chances in early minutes, and then doing defensive jobs at right flank for most of the time.

Should I be worried not to have any Ars/ManU defenders? Would you use 1FT to bring 1 in?

U seem to have a sound enough defence, I wouldn't say they are essential but bringing one in couldnt do any harm

Dawson to on of them might tempt me but its a strong defense already. I have been wary of boosting my defense too much. It hard to extract that money to get Aguero back vs an Ozil, Sterling, Yaya to 4.5 mid

    ----------------------- Butland --------------------
    ----------- Sagna - Morgan - Kolarov --------
    ---- Sanchez - Hazard - KDB - Mahrez ----
    ------------- Pelle - Lukaku - Vardy -----------

    McCarthy - Nyom - Deadwood - Martin

    1FT, 1.9m in the bank

Not really sure what to do this week...

    A) Butland > DDG/Cech
    B) Martin > 6.5m for any defender, if so, who?
    C) Save for international break
    D) Other, please specify

    @Zasa

I know you're wildcarding in the next few weeks mate. Just thought I'd open a discussion about Cedric as Soton defensive cover instead of VVD/Bertrand. Cheapest route into the defence and it seems to me that Koeman is trusting him more in the last few games (hasn't been subbed off early)

Also seems a BAP magnet and is just as attacking as Bertrand imo

    1. Zasa
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

I've thought about it for sure, surprised by his knack for BPS of late. Aye, was unlucky not to convert from his crosses today as Mané unfortunately skied it. I'm still keeping a close eye on his minutes, but for now in my view he's a better option than Berty without even taking price into consideration. Cedric's got the better of him here for creativity & defensive contribution, I wouldn't be too enticed by Bertrand at all, comparison tool also doesn't do him many favors. He only has the upperhand with a 10% better pass percentage in their last four, but that's it. - http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/10212/ .

In terms of sheer goal threat though, VVD & Fonte just dominate completely though - http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/1026/ - neither Cedric nor Bertrand possess that yet tbh. So that premium may be worth it over the long term if you can afford to do so. If not, I wouldn't be too worried tbh, at 5.0m if Cedric keeps his solid BPS count up per 90, he may very well negate VVD's or Fonte's odd goal tally.

So I think Cedric's a solid option, better than Berty by all counts, & a great value option. His fortunes have been slowly turning, also dependent on what you can do with that extra .6m on a WC.

      1. Nickofoz
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

        Good analysis mate!

I'm sticking with a GW13 WC, so if he plays 90 minutes against Sunderland I'll be bloody tempted to hold him.

Yeah you definitely wouldn't buy him for goals, he's been unlucky not to record a couple more assists though. Bellerin and Moreno nailed on for my WC as is one of the Saints. I'd like a United defender but Smalling seems the only nailed one and is too pricey, and call me crazy but I fancy a punt on Zouma with those fixtures. So might be worth saving the extra.

How about this Mahrez conundrum though 😕

        1. Zasa
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

Agree there, I may also need the .6m to invest in a Mahrez replacement (assuming Leicester's engine goes off soon).

I think you're fine with those three Nick, I'd look at the better value Toby/Dier over Smelling tbh. Spurs have been very solid at the back & have some of the best long term fixtures come Gw13 (WHM, CHE, wba, NEW, sot, NOR, wat, eve). Like you said, way too pricey & that's an extra 1.2m that old be better used elsewhere on a WC, not to mention DDG's kinder price 😉

Mate, please, please, please stay away from everything Chelsea! No need for the risk on a WC, an overpriced defender who plays for a relegation bound team & who've conceded 21 goals in 11 games with absolutely 0 signs of improvement.

Yep. It's hard to get rid of him in current form though, he's not making it easy for us.

Yeah Spurs could be a great shout. Toby or Dier for you? Both seem pretty similar in terms of goal threat

Hahaha yeah you are probably right 😀

    Hart (Myhill)

    Dann, Dawson, Monreal (Alderwerield, Francis)

Sanchez, Kdb, Mahrez (c), Mane (Payet)

    Ighalo, Pelle, Vardy

    thoughts?

Save my FT for after International break?
Kdb for captain? i feel like he will be rested after champions league match.
Sanchez is a real pain, i want ozil but dont want to regret dropping sanchez.
Benched mahrez this week and regretted it, now if i bench payet, itll probably be the same deal all over again.

    Any thoughts whatsoever is wanted/appreciated!

I'm beginning to get a bit frustrated with Claudio Ranieri's insistence to play Schlupp. He plays him at full back at the expense of Fuchs, and in mid-field at the expense of Mahrez. I wouldn't say he's better than either in those positions.

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

If he was left wing in a team with any sort of defence he would get sooo many FPL points

      1. Rotation City
        • 9 Years

He makes good runs into the box, but that's about it. He's hardly graceful, during the Norwich game he stepped on the ball and fell over when under no pressure. Unfortunately he scored that goal, so Ranieri kept playing him.....

          • 10 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

true but he's still going notch enough goals/assists for a £5m defender if he continues there, just the cleanies are so so lacking at Leicester

Mahrez is still his number one (as quoted by Ranieri himself). We all know the reasons why he was dropped against Norwich. And he returned late against Southampton.

But I do agree in regards to Fuchs.

I agree that this is probably not he best thing to do, but if you have a player that will fall in price and you want to get another one who will rise, it is worth the "gamble" imo

      Yes, for the time being.

Thinking out loud here though, he was actually pretty average against West Brom. Was in the right place at the right time for both of his goals, although when the game opened up when WBrom chased the game he looked a lot better.

I think he's a great option if you expect an open game, but Watford are pretty resilient at the back, I'm not sure it well be.
