Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope claimed a new victim this week as United’s Matteo Darmian earned his fifth yellow card of the campaign in yesterday’s goalless draw at Selhurst Park. Owned by 18% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the Italian now misses the home clash against West Brom and with Antonio Valencia still injured, Louis van Gaal has decisions to make at right back.

The Tightrope welcomed four new faces over the weekend, with 14 players now standing just one caution away from a single-match ban. Palace playmaker Yohan Cabaye, Swansea skipper Ashley Williams, Watford’s raiding right-back Allan Nyom and Liverpool midfielder Lucas are the latest recruits. The latter was perhaps a little fortunate not to earn a second yellow in the 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge after a foul on Ramires resulted in no more than a warning and proved a major post-match talking point.

Whilst Jose Mourinho was reluctant to comment for fear of FA disciplinary measures, Lucas, unsurprisingly, commended whistler Marc Clattenburg’s decision not to send him packing:

”They [Chelsea] will probably talk about it, it’s normal especially when you lose a game. The first three fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game probably were just fouls that maybe wouldn’t be a yellow card. Sometimes in my position you make fouls but more to stop the game and I think it was a good decision from the referee. He controlled the game very well, all the situations with the Chelsea players I think he dealt with it really well and I think it was a fair game.”

In terms of other new suspensions, Norwich will be without skipper Russell Martin for the Gameweek 12 home encounter against Swansea. The versatile defender was dismissed at City for denying a goal scoring opportunity – his handball in the box handed the hosts their first penalty.

Southampton will be devoid of Victor Wanyama’s services for next weekend’s trip to Sunderland. The Kenyan international avoided climbing onto the Tightrope after he was dismissed for collecting two bookings in this afternoon’s home win over Bournemouth – instead, he remains on three yellows and has been handed a one-match ban, thus returning in time for the Gameweek 13 clash against Stoke.

West Ham’s James Collins is set for a three-match ban after being dismissed for violent conduct during yesterday’s surprise loss to Watford as Slaven Bilic’s side lost for the first time on their travels this term.

After qualifying for the Europa League due to their fair play record, the Hammers have now received four red cards in the first 11 Gameweeks under their new manager, with Mark Noble (rescinded), Carl Jenkinson and Adrian the other parties concerned.

Bizarrely, this was the eighth red in just 11 Premier League matches involving West Ham. There has now been a sending off in each of their last four league outings, with Sunderland’s Jeremain Lens, Palace’s Dwight Gayle and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic all seeing red in the three fixtures prior to yesterday’s trip to Vicarage Road. Taking all competitions into account, there has been 12 red cards flashed over West Ham’s 18 fixtures with Bilic at the helm – the London club have been culpable on seven of those occasions.

Finally, reports this evening suggest Diego Costa could be set to escape retrospective action following another spat with nemesis Martin Skrtel. The Chelsea striker appeared to dig a boot into the Slovakian’s chest after both fell to the ground during the Reds’ 3-1 win but it’s believed that referee Clattenburg saw the incident and decided to take no further action.

Given that Costa has already served a three-match ban this season, this will be a huge relief for the under-fire Jose Mourinho if confirmed. Taking his previous ban into account, another stint on the sidelines for violent conduct would have earned Costa a four-match suspension this time around and forced him out of the upcoming league matches against Stoke, Norwich, Spurs and Bournemouth.

Long term planning. What do you think about these transfers over 5 gw period till kun is fully fit?

Kasper Sagna Muniesa Richards Payet ---> Hart Moreno Rojo Ward Cabaye

Lukaku/Pelle --> Aguero when he reaches 100% match fitness

Not sure why you'd want Cabaye and Hart or even Ward.

There's no way you'll be able to maintain a 5 week transfer plan. I struggle to carry out a two week one without needing to make an alternative transfer instead.

      My priorities would be:

      1: Muniesa > Moreno
2: Kasper > Hart (assuming you don't already have a decent playing backup, e.g. Butland, Myhil, Gomes)
2: Richards > A better defender that fits your Aguero funding model

took the gamble on Martial to Lukaku before the price changes..I fully believe in Martial's ability..one of the top raw talents in the league IMO, but I don't trust LVG for FPL beyond defense. frustrating..

Richards and Sinclair you can bench this week. When you have lots of little issues best to keep things ticking over with a strong first XI at the very least. Then when you find yourself in a situation where its all ok, you can deal with Richards/Sinclair etc.

Well I have to chose between him and Myhill. I think both will concede but Myhill less so. Unfortunately Ighalo might have to remain on the bench unless I bench, err, Payet 😕

        1. BIG TONES
          • 9 Years

I'm starting Myhill. United can't score and Brom are a solid defensive team as you know.

As for Ighalo, well Leicester don't really do clean sheets so he's a chance to be in the points. Tough choice between him and Payet, have to remember that was his first blank in a long time.

I feel as if I have to start Payet. Everton has a dodgy D as well with Jags out. I'm hoping one of my front 8 will somehow be ruled out for the weekend to make the decision easier.

thats the exact reason for owning a bench fodder. saves so much headache

i just dont like rotating attacking players. just pick your front 7 for a 3-4 week period and stick by them based on form and fixtures

That logic makes no sense to me. I care more about points and if that means the occasional benching headache then so be it.

                • 10 Years
                8 years, 7 months ago

Then you never give yourself an option to select another player without using a transfer. Ok you might bench points but if 1 of your front 8 gets injured you have an immediate backup and there's no excuse with all the spare cash at the moment.

Easy option just to pick a front 7 and be reassured that Westwood didn't score

Injuries could easily be covered by cheap defenders coming on like lets say nyom

Dont know about others but it has worked pretty well for me till now. Only one time my bench has scored more than 10 points (current rank 21k)

Saying that id strenghten the bench for Christmas period

Well, I can see Myhill doing well tbh. ManU are not the best going forward at the moment and West Brom will probably go there and park the bus. But you will have to drop Myhill at some point, if you feel this is the week to do so, I don't think it is a bad idea either. DDG could be a great option as you don't have ManU def.

Waste of an Arsenal spot though, especially if you already have an Arsenal defender.

Agree on Butland. Money no option its DDG.

We currently are flush with 'aguero' cash. For me the GK position is where you see the least disparity between high and low pric player.

Play Butland every week of the season and will be, at a guess, 20 odd points behind Hart, Cech etc come the end

And Butland is a good keeper, with ShawX returning, I am expecting more CS. I prefer to spend on front 7 and a stable starting defence.

    Butland McCarthy
    Toby Bellerin Kolarov Prodl Francis
    KDB Sanchez Payet Mane Westwood
    Lukaku Bony Vardy

    1FT 3.7M in the bank

I am thinking Prodl -> Moreno or should i save?

Thoughts? No Mahrez obviously hurting me but don't think i will get him with these fixtures..

For me he actually is a good keeper and we can only go on what we have seen so far this season.

          4.5 Butland and 5.3(?) Rojo
          vs
          5.5 DDg and a 4.5 defender.

Personally i like the first pair

            B, Rojo isn't nailed 😉

He is a great keeper, I agree with that and I've had him since the start. But this might be a situation where you take the points he has given you and run.

Fair enough, i personally think Rojo has that spot but who knows.

Say you expect Butland to get around 110 to 120 points for the season (Guzan got 112 last year). Where is the 4.5 defender who will do that?

Just leave him in and get om Manu, Ars etc through the defenders.

No right or wrong i know, just the way i play

Your missing my point, I agree with you 100% that Butland has been amazing. But with those fixtures.....

My point of this post was will ShawX actually improve Stokes defence? Not on Butland being a bad GK.

Your defence is weak as well, Butland still will get you some save points if without CS, keeping CS is not easy. I'd prefer to fix your defence with someone with attacking thread to maximize the point return such as Moreno, Rojo, Bellerin. They are more likely to get you more points than a keeper to keep a CS.

He has the exact same team that won him the league, and he has had a huge conundrum with Haz. Pretty sure he's gone after Stoke, if not, Chelsea are at risk of losing their best player this summer.

What that team needs is to win a few games and get some positivity back in their game. Which they are very capable of doing. There is still so much season left.

I honestly think they are just a bit complacent after having won last season with ease and aren't playing with that level of desperation that the league demands week in week out.

What they need is for Haz to put the ball in the net and not blame be upset with Jose (who has played him religiously while manager at Chelsea so I don't see what the problem is). Wonder if he would enjoy Wengers rotation. Amazing to me people are thinking sacking Jose is the right move yet Wenger somehow is still at Arsenal and look at them now.

My opinion of course but prefer longevity with big name managers not in and out every couple of seasons.

I was thrilled with Wanyama's red. Should hopefully help him drop to 4.2m and then he's an absolute steal.

Thats what I thought originally, but then I realised we can only have 3 Southampton players. Most people will have a SOT defender + Mane/Tadic + Pelle

There are enough good striker options that I'm not entirely positive I want a mid from Soton as well because of the midfield options available that would require a 5-man

meh. with all the great budget options this year there is no reasons to have a 5th mid like Wanyama when you could spend real money and double up on City or bring in a wishy washy player like Coutinho who may deliver big any big week.

Sinclair is plummeting like a stone still..I feel like Wanyama could drop due to the red card and the less discerning managers who have a lot of money from no Aguero

Don't really like Barkley as an FPL option. Gets the odd long range scorcher, but tends not to be amongst the points regularly

    Team as it stands..
    DDG (Hennessey)
    Bertrand Moreno Janmaat! (Simpson Dawson)
    Sanchez Kdb Yaya Ozil Mane
    Pelle Vardy (Ighalo)
1 FT 2.0 in the bank

Plan was to save a transfer this week and swap Yaya for a 5.5 below mid next week(Drinkwater/Lanzini) in the aim of getting Aguero for Pelle

Thinking i need to change that to KDB to Mahrez to free up the cash instead.. Gonna wait till next week though. really dont need to touch my attack this week

    Solid plan?

    Bench one please:

    Sanchez KdB Mane Ayew Mahrez
    Pelle Lukaku Vardy

All easy fixtures except Sanchez. Surely can't bench Sanchez.

Sanchez has the best fixture of the lot 8O. I'm toying with giving him the armband.

All do have good fixtures, but I would be benching Ayew here. Swansea look out of sorts and the least likely to grab a few goals.

No you can't bench Sanchez! Arsenal in good form and normally a few goals the this fixture.
I'd be bench Ayew due to swans poor form, tough call mate. Can see you benching points here.
