The Digest – Gameweek 12

Romelu Lukaku’s ascent up the Fantasy standings brings the Everton forward onto many a radar ahead of some kind upcoming matches. Palace find their form at Anfield, whilst Sergio Aguero’s imminent return is set to have a major say in our winter planning.

The Player

There was almost an air of inevitability about Romelu Lukaku’s leveler at Upton Park last Saturday.

The Everton striker does, after all, love playing against the Hammers. Lukaku had netted six times in as many matches against the London outfit prior to the weekend and delivered the goods yet again, bagging a goal and two bonus points to climb to second in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings.

Encouragingly for Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers alike, the Belgian international seems to have developed some consistency to his top-flight displays in recent outings. Lukaku produced points in just two of his first six matches but has since blanked just twice in the subsequent six – only United and Arsenal have kept him at bay.

Already, he’s closing in fast on the previous year’s attacking returns. Lukaku has scored seven times – only three less than 2014/15 – whilst his tally of four assists is edging towards last term’s six.

One look at the next seven Gameweeks (AVL, bou, CPL, nor, LEI, new, STO) underlines just why he’s the most sought-after striker in FPL this week. Over 67,000 managers have acquired Lukaku’s services since that Upton Park strike and with his confidence on the up, the Belgian’s perfect blend of form and fixtures is looking hard to resist.

The Team

A 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday brought Jurgen Klopp back down to earth as Palace chalked up a third straight victory against a resurgent Liverpool outfit.

Ahead of back-to-back home matches against Sunderland and Newcastle, Alan Pardew’s side served a timely reminder of their options at both ends of the pitch.

The 4.0-priced Wayne Hennessey continues to look secure between the sticks and with Joel Ward benched for the Anfield clash, Scott Dann showed just why he’s the priciest defender at Selhurst Park. The centre-half bagged a second goal of the season to climb to fifth in the defender standings – only Aleksandar Kolarov has earned more bonus points (11 to nine) at the back than the 5.1-priced Eagles centre-half.

Yannick Bolasie’s second goal in the last five also brings him back onto our radars. Handed a role up top against the Reds, the DR Congo international’s appeal is boosted by the fact that Yohan Cabaye and Wilfried Zaha are teetering on the Suspension Tightrope, with four yellow cards apiece.

Connor Wickham’s return off the bench also bodes well for Palace’s attacking midfield three, with the former Sunderland man offering a real physical focal point up front. There’s no doubt that the Eagles have toiled without Wickham’s presence in the final third – they won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in his last start and had scored just four times in seven matches prior to their weekend win.

If Sunday’s showing is anything to go by, then, it seems that the Eagles are starting to finally return to form in time to take advantage of a kind upcoming schedule which also hands them clashes against the likes of Everton, Stoke and Bournemouth in the next six rounds of fixtures.

The Talking Point

After seeing his side fail to find a way past Villa last Sunday, Manuel Pellegrini sent Fantasy managers’ plans into overdrive by revealing that Sergio Aguero could be in line for a Gameweek 13 return against Liverpool.

Only yesterday, the Argentine’s tweet on his recovery from a hamstring injury afforded further reason for optimism as we prepare to welcome him back into the fray.

Since Aguero limped out of action in the previous international break, most of us have restructured our squads and used the money to strengthen our attacks. Plenty have opted for eight strong options in midfield and up front, leaving us weekly headaches when it comes to decide who to bench. Aguero’s return could change all that as we look for ways to free up cash to acquire his services.

Yesterday’s confirmation that Dimitri Payet will be sidelined for around three months will be seen by many as the first step in restructuring, with the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Gerard Deulofeu offering cut-price alternatives to the Hammers playmaker. Furthermore, Mesut Ozil – at 8.8 – is challenging the 11.6-priced Alexis Sanchez as our go-to Arsenal option, having delivered points in eight of his 11 appearances. In a season where the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo all offer exceptional value for money, finding a route back to Aguero shouldn’t be too difficult.

The question for most, though, is when to make the move? Much could depend on the City situation. Given that Wilfried Bony limped off on 24 minutes at Villa Park, the league leaders currently boast youngster Kelechi Iheanacho as their only fully-fit striker. If Bony is ruled out for any length of time, Pellegrini will certainly be tempted to call upon Aguero quicker than he previously anticipated as he looks to reignite his side’s title bid.

In saying that, there’s no doubt that Pellegrini will court caution with his star striker’s fitness and it’s unlikely Aguero will be afforded 90-minute run outs on his immediate return.

Having signed off for domestic duties with a five-goal haul against Newcastle in just 64 minutes back in Gameweek 8, though, Aguero’s explosive potential looms large. Down in price to 13.0, owned by just 10% of FPL managers, he now has four home matches in the next six. If he’s passed fit for the Liverpool encounter, dare we go without him?

Any early ideas on this lot?

    Myhill - McCarthy
    Bellerin - Coleman - Smalling - Nyom - Targett
    Sanchez - KDB - Mahrez - Mane - Wijnaldum
    Pelle - Bony - Lukaku

Got 1 FT and 0m in the bank.

    A. Save this gw and do Pelle+Bony+Wijnaldum ➡ Aguero+Ighalo+Surman for -4 next gw.

    B. KDB+Bony ➡ Surman+Kane for -4 this gw and the Pelle ➡ Aguero next gw.

    C. Sanchez+Bony ➡ Ozil+Kane for -4 this gw and Coleman+Pelle+Wijnaldum ➡ Aguero+Alderweireld+Surman for -8 next gw.

    This is tough. 🙁

    Current front 8 are:

Sanchez Mahrez Yaya Mane PAYET *

    Vardy Pelle Kane

    with 1FT, 1.1 itb

    Which is better?

A- Pelle > Lukaku (c), bench Payet and avoid bench headache
B- Payet > max 5.2 in order to afford Aguero gameweek 14
    C- both A& B for -4 ?

Average FFS manager count on big hitters, like Haz and Kun providing a steady chunk of points. If their absences, the average struggled.

Yup - this too. We make plans etc for the big hitters which others don't. People in my leagues haven't thought about budgets etc but that doesn't matter right now.

If Chelsea do nothing through this purple patch of fixtures it's certainly not going to help us who can easily switch.

Seems to be - no-one is being THAT consistent and players like Vardy were doing it early on so "casual" players or non-active teams probably still own him.

It's tough to call I'm finding this season. Hopefully can improve the rank soon.

Realistically think I have to look away from Aguero for another game week. Because of the Payet injury it's going to take a -4 to bring him in and that includes leaving MItrovic in my team which I'm not happy about.

If I want Vardy and Aguero then it's a -8 with Bolasie and a 4.6m~ defender

Those are my thoughts. A semi-fit Aguero with no form guide playing Liverpool doesn't feel better than Pelle at home to Stoke. Certainly not better enough to warrant forcing my transfer plans.

Thinking of taking -4 hits in next two game weeks.

    1. Payet and Bony out, Hazard and Lukaku in.
    2. Sanchez and Pelle out, Ozil and Aguero in.

Worth taking the hits? I feel I could wait for Aguero to show some form but the problem is his price will escalate quickly, and Pelle whilst a great target man isn't as great a fantasy asset as you would like. Especially with better options out there.

So should I take a hit then save my FT to make the changes in 2?

Hazard and Chelsea have some lush home fixtures coming up, and Hazard has shown glimpses of his old self in the last 2 games. A no brainer to get him in this gameweek?

If l change Payet to Gosling l can bring in Kun next week even if l do Ayew to Ozil for a hit now.

Is Ayew to Ozil for a hit worth it?

If you had Payet and Morgan on your bench for the next GW with a good starting 11, would you keep them there knowing they're both going to drop tonight and end up losing 0.3 in total selling value?

Payet is gone for 3 months. Get rid lol

      1. Rains of Castamere

I'm aware of that. Would people take out Morgan and Payet for -4 even though I was going to bench them next GW anyway? I hate losing selling value.

It's basically £0.3 in cash vs 4 point hit.

Depends who you getting for Morgan. I'm taking -4 hit Cathcart out who is playing because I really want Rose ASAP and I think trade will pay for itself

Would probably do Ake/Cathcart and Ozil in, with Payet and Morgan out. But I don't need them this GW so I think I'll just have to sit tight and lose the cash as hard as that might be.

    Ozil - Sanchez - Mahrez - Redmond - Payet

    A) Don't take hit. Payet > Surman this week and play Surman/Redmond. Next week Redmond > Silva.
    B) Take a hit. Redmond, Payet > Surman, Silva.

Hopefully Payet will only drop by .2 in value before next deadline. I can ride that and still make .2 in profit when I shift him out

Only way Payet not dropping 0.3 in international break is if FPL towers freeze his price which they seem to for some players but not others.

Any Watford fans on? Abdi has always impressed me; has a good shot on him and scored a few in the Championship. Is he worth the 5th mid spot or will he be axed when Jurado is back?

    My front 8 are:

    Sanchez KDB Payet Mane Mahrez

    Lukaku Pelle Vardy

I'm thinking Payet to Lanzini this gw (will be first sub) and then Pelle and Mane to Aguero and Defoleu next gw?

    Solid plan?

Delofeus form and fixtures are great? And Lanzini has actually outscored Payet last 4 gws and could be the one to step up in his absence?

Would you not consider this a strong front 8?

        Sanchez KDB Mahrez Delofeu Lanzini
        Aguero Vardy Lukaku

What would be your alternative suggestion?

Is it worth bringing in Coutihno or any other midfield for the same price or cheaper would be a better buy?

Who is the best cheap mid option (below 5.5, or even below 5.0) in your opinion?

Payet situation seems like the perfect opportunity to free up cash to re-introduce Aguero... I plan to do:

    Payet > Lanzini
Cresswell > Bellerin (can wait, but want him in for next 4 arsenal games)
    Sanchez > Bolasie
    Ighalo > Aguero

Which would leave me with DDG, Butland; Kompany, Bellerin, Toby, Rojo, Richards; Mahrez, Ozil, KDB, Bolasie, Lanzini; Vardy, Lukaku, Aguero.
