Scout Scribbles – Dire Night for Manchester Duo

Man City stumble to a 1-0 Champions League loss at Juventus, as neighbours United fail to find a way past PSV at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, Mauricio Pochettino considers resting Harry Kane for Spurs’ Europa League clash tonight and Daniel Sturridge edges closer to a Liverpool return.

City Lose in Turin

Manchester City fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Juventus last night. Sergio Aguero played 69 minutes before being replaced by Raheem Sterling, while Gael Clichy lasted the distance on his return from injury as Aleksandar Kolarov dropped to the bench. Joe Hart was withdrawn at the 81-minute mark, with Manuel Pellegrini later explaining that the shot-stopper was suffering with hamstring and back injuries. The Sky Blues boss refused to rule out David Silva for their home tie against Southampton, but insisted that Vincent Kompany will be sidelined for at least another couple of weeks:

“As for Joe Hart – it is impossible to know how serious his injury is at this point. He has a problem with his hamstring and has had a problem in his back for the past week. We hope we don’t lose him, but for if for some reason he cannot play I have trust in Willy Caballero. David Silva is working with the physio in Manchester and we will know more tomorrow, but Vincent Kompany has no chance to play this week. He is not running yet and will need at least two weeks more.”

The Scout Says: Ally Hart’s doubt for the weekend with Kompany’s continued absence and Man City’s defence is looking vulnerable. Those Fantasy managers holding the likes of Aleksandar Kolarov and Bacary Sagna will be irked by the fact that Pellegrini’s charges have shipped 12 goals in the five matches that Kompany missed, failing to register a single clean sheet. Nonetheless, match-ups against Stoke City (away) and Swansea (home) in the next three Gameweeks harbour decent shut-out potential. Although Pellegrini previously stated that Aguero is unable to play three games in a week, the Argentine has played just over an hour in both of the last two and will surely lead the line at home to Southampton once again. Given that City have scored just one goal in their last three in all competitions, Silva’s possible return would be a real shot in the arm as they attempt to rediscover their spark in the final third.

United Attack Falters Again

Manchester United’s home encounter against PSV Eindhoven ended as a 0-0 stalemate, putting their Champions League campaign firmly in the balance. Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial returned to the starting line-up from illness and injury respectively, with the former operating as a number ten and the latter spearheading the attack. Having been utilised as a forward last weekend, Memphis Depay was shifted to the left flank, whilst Van Gaal’s decision to bench Juan Mata meant Jesse Lingard was afforded his third successive 90-minute run-out for the Red Devils.

The Scout Says: Another clean sheet for the Red Devils reaffirms the merits of investing in their back line. Chris Smalling (6.7) is the safest option by virtue of his security of starts, though Marcos Rojo (5.5) has started four of the last five but remains a slight rotation risk, particularly over the festive period when the schedule picks up pace. Notwithstanding the former’s prohibitive price tag, Man United’s favourable fixtures (lei, WHU, bou, NOR, sto) certainly justifies investment. Up front, Martial flattered to deceive as the lone frontman and has now scored one goal in his last 11 appearances for United; having chalked up just 11 shots throughout the entire league campaign, the former Monaco starlet will need to accelerate his influence in the final third to re-ignite our interest. Lingard, meanwhile, produced four attempts last night – double the number of any team-mate – and at just 4.5, he is clearly worth monitoring if he can retain his starting berth at the weekend again.

Pochettino Considers Resting Kane Tonight

Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Harry Kane could be rested for Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League tie against Qarabag FK. During his pre-Europa League press conference, the Argentine complained about the fixture scheduling which sees his side play in Azerbaijan tonight before playing host to Chelsea at midday on Sunday:

“Why couldn’t we play on Monday against Chelsea? The reality is you play Thursday, have a long trip home and play Sunday morning, in this case Chelsea who played yesterday [Tuesday] and have three days (to prepare). We have one day – it’s an advantage for opponent. We need to accept the rules for the game but it’s the reality for us. We will see tomorrow if Kane plays. This is a problem we have had in the last few weeks, the international players play a lot: Kane, Alli, Walker, Dier. The competition is very tough and it’s not easy to manage that. But always we try to assess and analyse to make the correct decision.”

On the injury front, Pochettino broke the news that Erik Lamela and Nabil Bentaleb are contending with ankle injuries. Meanwhile, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker and Mousa Dembele will not feature for the Lilywhites, as they were not asked to travel with the squad to Azerbaijan:

“Nabil is still out, he got a bad tackle during international duty with Algeria and he is out now. Alex Pritchard, Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela are also out and we have rested a few players for this game as well.”

The Scout Says: Given that Kane hasn’t missed a domestic or European match this term and turned out for England in the U21 Euros during the summer, his 27% ownership will be hoping that Pochettino affords the red-hot frontman a well-earned breather. Fresh off the back of a brace against West Ham United, Kane will be relishing the opportunity to match up against Chelsea at White Hart Lane, having put them to the sword with a brace and two assists in the corresponding fixture last term. With Dele Alli serving out his one-match suspension next Gameweek and Lamela a doubt for the Blues clash, Dembele could be shifted back into the attacking quartet, with Ryan Mason sitting alongside Eric Dier in the double pivot.

Sturridge Close to Reds Return

Jurgen Klopp said that Daniel Sturridge could play against Bordeaux on Thursday if he negotiates training without any problems. Conversely, Martin Skrtel is unlikely to be in the matchday squad because of illness:

“Daniel is coming closer and closer, he has trained seven or eight times in a row. I will help him, and in the end it will help us. He’s closer. Each session is very important, my decision you will see tomorrow, but it’s closer. The most important thing is he can train with no problems. If we have the feeling that it’s a good moment for [Sturridge to play] a few minutes or more, we will see in the game!”

The Scout Says: In the wake of their 4-1 road victory over Manchester City, Liverpool’s attacking assets are back on many a Fantasy manager’s radar. Philippe Coutinho (four goals and one assist in three) and Roberto Firmino (one goal and three assists in three) are courting serious attention in light of their burgeoning partnership, yet the striker situation on Merseyside, with both Sturridge and Christian Benteke jostling for attention, means we are yet to ascertain Klopp’s preferred starting XI. With Liverpool’s schedule from now through to the New Year (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun) looking ripe for returns, Fantasy managers are hoping for some consistency of selection as we look for a way into Klopp’s flourishing attack.

Eder Pushing for more Minutes

Having started ahead of Bafetimbi Gomis for the Swans’ 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth, Eder is determined to prove his worth and earn further pitch time in the league:

“I had to adjust to the rhythm because I haven’t been playing, but it was good and I’m looking for more minutes. I’m working hard for that. I always want to play, but it’s the gaffer’s decision. I’m going to keep working hard so I can play more games. That’s what I’m going to do. I need to play a few games, but I will try to show my best as soon as possible. I’m working hard and I feel confident.”

The Scout Says: Eder’s insertion into the starting XI was borne out of necessity, considering that Gomis had drawn blanks in eight successive starts. It’s safe to say that the Portuguese frontman failed to stamp his authority on the lone-striker berth, managing one shot and zero key passes against the Cherries. As such, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Garry Monk elected to reinstate Gomis for their trip to Liverpool this Sunday. With regards to attacking coverage for the Welsh outfit, Andre Ayew (three goals in six outings) remains the prime pick. The 7.1-priced Ghana international has tallied as many shots on target (five) as the rest of Swansea’s midfielders combined over the last six Gameweeks.

2 Free Transfers, tell me what you'd do! 😀

    Myhill

    Moreno - Rojo - Bellerin

    Mane - KdB - Sanchez - Mahrez

    Costa - Kane - Vardy

    McCarthy - Williams - Westwood - Targett

    0.7 itb

I had Costa as a placeholder for Aguero, but now it seems I can't go without Lukaku anymore and Kun would need time and City being out of form.

That'd leave me with 2.5 in the bank, Mane could be OOP against City, maybe worth a shot? He scores against big clubs. But then there's Ozil and Firmino I want. I could just play a mini-WC and get Ozil, Lukaku and Firmino/Coutinho for KdB, Mane and Costa for 4 points.

Scholes saved much of his ire for Anthony Martial, who has now scored just one goal in 11 games, but is also a 19-year-old striker predominantly playing on the left wing.

“Martial, for me, he’s still got a lot to prove goalscoring wise, he isn’t a centre-forward where he lives for goals,” Scholes said. “He likes to play outside of the box, he likes to drift to the left wing, he doesn’t look like he’s bothered if he misses a chance. He doesn’t look bothered if he scores a goal. As a centre-forward, all you live for is scoring goals. He doesn’t look that type of player to me, and maybe Manchester United need to go into the transfer market for one of them.”

Former United striker Michael Owen said the current United side were not up to the standard of previous line-ups.

“Manchester United of old would blow that group away, be qualified after four games. It is the story of the season,” said Owen.

“It’s just amazing how they are still in with a shout of qualifying and flying high in the Premier League.

“They are quite a way away at the moment. They’re just a defending team with attackers with no help from elsewhere. It’s very very one-dimensional.”

Pretty obvious United need a proper goalscorer but at the end of the day they don't create enough chances so even if you had van Nistelrooy and he doesn't receive the service, he can't put them away can he?

They need to stop playing with such a defensive minded duo in central midfield - there's too much gap between the front 4 and the back 6. Also Rooney is hopeless, needs a change of scenery or something but he's just deteriorated so rapidly. In an ideal world, he should go back to a 4-3-3 where midfielders actually make forward/late runs into the box or if he wants to keep 4-2-3-1 then Herrera needs to play in the 2 to link the midfield with the attack. Also need more pace on the wings and more overlapping from full-backs.

This isn't a knee-jerk for last night (which I'm livid about) - the problems are there for everyone to see, especially in terms of creating chances, highlighted even more whenever we play a team that sits back and defends (90% of teams).

And he's carrying an out of sorts Rooney. There's not much that will turn this United side if you ask me. We are THE most difficult team in the league to break.

Maybe you'll change your mind in some weeks time. ManUtd is flying high in the EPL because the other teams is not consistent also. Had it been the past years, they wouldn't have been up there. With their boring football, I can see them out of the top4 very soon.

Under LvG, Depay has come in, Martial has come in. Schneiderlin the only success for me.

Depay hasn't done anything, didn't understand Martial buy, still don't. Di maria didn't work, Falcao didn't work.

That's the thing I pointed out, buying a winger and a striker in the summer and only 3 months later they are still a winger and a striker away from a really good team.

That's fair but to say LVG hasn't worked out is outrageous in my opinion. He's done a good enough job so far, not set the world alight but good enough. Got us back into the CL and we could go top with a win on Saturday.

Right. I'll take you through his buys.

            DDG. Kept him. Masterstroke.
Darmian. First season in the league. Slowly blending in.
Rojo. Starter. Versatile at CB and LB.
Blind. Starter. Versatile. Can play Mid, LB and CB.
            Schmidfield - Superb
Depay - Future buy. Don't expect a 21 year old to go all guns blazing day one do you?
Martial - Most exciting united buy i've seen since a while. I absolutely love the Martial buy. If you've seen him play enough, you'll know how good he is.

He doesn't have pace upfront and he's still carrying a crocked Rooney. He's turned Lingard into somewhat of a player and now we are very system dependant.

If you were given quite some amount of transfer budget and had to buy a striker, would you have bought Martial over someone who's more of a target man and knows how to score?

United have Mata who's brilliant in every respect, give him a good enough striker and he will create. He made Ba look good at Chelsea!

Depay, maybe it was the hype that he seems like a disappointment, but then again, barring that one CL qualifying game, he hasn't really shown anything yet unlike Martial who definitely does look sharp and has pace, but is he exactly what's United in a CF playing for United?

Good post on Sanchez Captainers Beware, but the swing in goal attempts conceded and attempts in the box conceded isn't great enough to scare me off Sanchez(c). Fact is though they've tightened up a bit by packing the midfield, they're still conceding lots of chances.

Only Bournemouth, Villa and Newcastle have conceded more big chances in the last 4.

They're still a team and defence that will badly struggle to keep out Arsenal imo. 3 nil.

I agree. Far too much emphasis on a rubbish team that have decided to tighten up at the back. That's all well and good but it'll make no difference whatsoever when Arsenal come to town. It all depends what Arsenal team turn up, simple as that.

        Yep.

Nno travel, 5 days rest, focused by a defeat last time out, and with midfield reinforcements arriving in Chamberlain and Ramsey makes me think it'll be a strong Arsenal turning up this time.

    ---THE KANE VS AGUERO TOPIC---
    -----------------------------
Since I found no hot topic-surprisingly- about this, and I've been away all week. I'm sure many-like me- still didn't buy either and are having a hard time picking what might be the most important player in the team, so here's a quick comparison, I hope to get opinions from everyone, who bought kane, who bought Aguero and who still didn't...

    -Fixtures and explosion-ability:
Aguero:SOT, sto, SWA, ars, SUN, lei, wat
Kane:CHE, wba, NEW, sot, NOR, wat, eve
Kane has a slight advantage, but imo NEW and NOR are the only guarranteed matches, Aguero has SWA, SUN, lei.... Both players has the ability to explode even in tough fixtures, but I think Aguero still has more explosion-ability on his day
    ----------
    -Form:
Kane wins this, he's in a far better form, but I think that throughout the years we learnt that aguero could pick himslef up and score a hat-trick anytime
    ----------
    -Caliber:
Aguero has way more class than Kane, imo there is no comparison, Aguero is simply on another level
    ----------
    - Team form:
Tottenham are in better form right now, city's form is declining and spurs are on the up, silva is needed to provide those passes to aguero
    ----------
    - Lone striker?
The chance of harry kane being involved in a tottenham goal is greater than aguero imo, in city u have sterling, kdb and somethimes even Bony and yaya
    ----------
    - Price
3.5 difference, but with Mahrez and Vardy still nailed, and me being not a fan of the 5th mid, maybe the 3.5m won't be the deciding factor after all
    ---------
    -Overall:
I find it very hard to make a decision, Aguero USUALLY provides the safety of just having him in your team and not missing those explosions and being able to captain him regurarly, but Kane makes a great case for his explosion-ability as well in his current form, esp. that he might want to make a point before January 😉

I'd rather Kane right now, and glad I already have him.

For me the question is whether to bring Aguero in as well, and have my midfield suffer.
I am ordinarily big on midfield and the likes of Coutinho/Firmino, and Ramsey and Silva returning, is making it even more difficult than usual to lock up all my funds in Aguero and have Dan Gosling instead.

Yes both players make a very good case, I think it's tough to make a choice between them, I think this choice will have a very high impact on the team in the case one shines and the other blanks, esp the next few weeks

Tbf to Giroud , he has been very good this season - and Walcott is a very able deputy in case Giroud gets injured

Arsenal need a CDM more than a striker imo

Arsenal could really have done with Morgan Schneiderlin...

Maybe they do, but he made a strong point that they needed one and then when asked who to get, he said they should get Wanyama, even though he is not an Arsenal style player. Hilarious.
'He's not an Arsenal sort of player but I think they should just get him'.

If he ever watched Wanyama play , he would understand that he IS similar to Morgan Schneiderlin and IMO can play for Arsenal

Giroud is good most seasons. He is a regular scorer of goals, and links the play well. I think it's a bit unfair that he's regarded as a donkey on here; i don't mind him.

He is a streaky kind of player - when he is not in form , he is very bad , Walcott is good enough to play when Giroud goes on a barren run
