Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 15

There were 30 yellow cards flashed across the weekend’s nine fixtures but not one resulted in a suspension. With five new faces clambering aboard over Saturday and Sunday, the Tightrope now has 21 players sitting just one booking shy of a single-match ban as the busy festive period kicks in.

Chelsea’s Diego Costa, Newcastle midfielder Vurnon Anita, Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and West Brom midfield duo Craig Gardner and James McClean were the latest additions, with the latter escaping with just a yellow for a reckless high challenge on Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele.

Discussing the incident with the press post-match, Baggies boss Tony Pulis hinted that the winger was somewhat fortunate not to be sent packing:

“It was a reckless challenge. He shouldn’t be doing things like that, it’s not allowed in the modern game and he’s got to be careful. He just sees the ball, he is one of those people that if the ball was in front of a brick wall he would throw himself in to try and win the challenge. He’s not a nasty guy, there’s none of that about him, but he has to be careful”.

As a result of the weekend activity, seven sides – Bournemouth, Newcastle, Southampton, Stoke, Spurs, Watford and West Brom – now have a couple of players apiece with four cautions to their names.

Our Tightrope protagonists still sit some way behind Norwich’s Alex Tettey, though, who leads the way on seven bookings for the season after incurring the referee’s wrath during the 2-0 loss at Watford.

Just behind Tettey, there are now four players on six yellow cards. Stoke’s Erik Pieters, Liverpool duo James Milner and Lucas and Newcastle’s Jack Colback are the men concerned, with the latter two picking up cautions this weekend.

Lucas’ yellow card means that Liverpool have now earned 33 cautions in the Premier League alone – that’s on a par with West Brom and just two behind Tottenham in top spot.

Finally, four players will be available for action this weekend after serving one-match bans. Liverpool’s Emre Can, Villa’s Ciaran Clark, West Brom’s Claudio Yacob and Palace’s Wilfried Zaha toppled off last week’s Tightrope, with Can earning his fifth yellow in the midweek cup win at Southampton. Zaha, of course, will serve his ban tomorrow night as the Eagles roll up to Everton.

This means that, at present, there are no players set to serve suspensions in Gameweek 16. Palace’s Yohan Cabaye and Everton’s James McCarthy could yet succumb to the lure of the Tightrope, though – they head into tomorrow’s match at Goodison on four bookings apiece.

Finally, reports this evening suggest that United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger could face retrospective action for an alleged elbowing incident involving West Ham’s Winston Reid at Old Trafford yesterday. It’s believed that referee Mark Clattenburg and his assistants missed the altercation, with the FA set to contact the whistler before making a decision. Marouane Fellaini is likely to escape punishment for an alleged stamp on James Tomkins during the goalless draw.

They'd sack Mourinho if this continued with 10 or so matches left as a relegation threat. Any replacement would then easily lift Chelsea from their rut.

kind of better for Vardy if they score less isn't it? With a single Vardy goal in a 1-0, he's odds on to get 9 points. Whereas if he scores in a 3-2 victory it's probably only going to be 6.

Thoughts on Kane vs Newcastle. Worth losing Vardy for? Maybe Mané to Eriksen or Alli instead?

Yup. Seems premature to sell Vardy, and Lukaku and Deeney aren't going anywhere.

    2. Super Tim Cahill
      • 8 Years

It's a difficult one isn't it? Logic says he should score but given Kane's mediocre games in the last 2 weeks and Newcastle's surprising clean sheet today, losing someone in great form such as Vardy for him is questionable. On the plus side the less serious players will never transfer in someone who has gone 2,1 in his last 2 gameweeks so captaining him may lead to a rank gain if he does well

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

I still think Newcastle are poor, particularly away. If I could cover Kane's points with a Spurs midfielder, I'd be happy!

it will be interesting to see what happens from here. Saying he should retire is easy from the stands, especially when he's picking up 300k a week. Would you give that up? It's also a long time out of the game. His best decision in footballing terms would be to see out the season then move to a smaller club (on a lower wage, gasp) and start playing a new position. Either an out and out target man, or central midfielder I think would suit him but there's no way Man U are going to have the patience to stick with him as he learns to adapt to his advanced footballing age..

They dont win games by balanced play, not intending to win the game 1-0 or 2-0 with a clean sheet. They win by vastly outscoring their opponents.

    A. Mahrez (1.2m more than I bought him originally and suck it up)

Don't give up on FPL. Take up my offer I make every summer to folk of playing a league with a hit a week every week..no more and no less.

It takes away all the frustration of the game by ignoring OR...it becomes a not issue by effectively shooting yourself in the foot from day one.

Classic league or just H2H...you decide.

I just play fpl for the cash leagues. Or means little. Plus having a bad memory means passwords get forgot or emails forgot so I end up never looking like I've played more than a season or 2. Which means a good or is always lost to history.

Was thinking yesterday you should stick to this number per team for future. In the past with up to 15 it was really hard to manage. So many people not updating with transparent plans or dropping off the face of earth all together.
Used to like the things previous regime did that let us know how good managers had been at bench selections, maybe could add that in future

In the scorecentre. On the front screen it tells you which group you are in you then just click on the tab corresponding to the group.

Unfortunately there is a significant delay during gametime so scores take a good while to become accurate.

Erm San Marino are hating it the scores seem all over the place it has us losing every week.

On a serious note I enjoy these competitions although the losses have been hard to take we have had some ridiculously bad luck. Enjoy the banter and winding the opposition up a bit, especially looking forward to making sure England don't qualify by rolling out 5 bench boosts and dedicating the win to Viperstripes 😉

Everyone has pretty much had enough tbh. Looking at the squads (us and Iceland) we would probably have won our tie 4 out of 5 times. Think Sess is taking a hiatus this week so I will probably step in and either myself or Djenzio will submit the team, we are all feeling nothing is going right this season for any of us

Don't know how do you pull it but the pressers are brilliant. If some of the "quieter" team qualified for the next round they are supposed to be given a power to hire an additional squad for the PR post

Their form looks suspect to me.

@Tony. Link your UFPL squad please so I can look at it.

It sounds to me like you concentrated on getting as many good players in as you could and not enough on "sub in" picks.

I's no good getting too many good players for MD1...it's not like fpl.

Two players left, your score may seem bad but it's ok. Still easily be in contention for the monthly prize. Like Rover said, subs are crucial in the game.

        Stick with it.

It'll be Barkley & Lukaku in with Lukaku captain.

If he hits who knows I might not look too bad.

What u think of the team I've got and how does it compare to yours?

You were unlucky losing out by 2pts tough break.

You're 10 points behind me but I have 5 teams in it. My points range from 40 to 70 I think.

Last month the first week was shocking, in fact it was only after the Saturday last weekend I had a chance. I'm using December and jan to get ready for Feb, I'm determined for the 1k then. Obviously still going to try before. Remember this month is Christmas too, People miss deadlines easily.

Last thing about upfl is the deadline is always after the teams for the first game have been announced, really handy for a sun and Monday.

Oh right is that why you call your team..Nunber4 then your surname? Was wondering why that was.

Aye I think I've a decent balance on players to come in throughout the month.

Just ballsed up and benched some good points.

Don't worry, my 40 point team had mahrez, butland and allied not playing. Captained Kane though 🙂
