Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 16

Our Tightrope walkers were on their best behaviour over the weekend, with no new suspensions to report on so far in Gameweek 16. Indeed, the last 19 Premier League matches have failed to see anyone topple off, after last week also passed without incident.

There are now 23 players sitting just a single booking short of a one-match ban. Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures produced just two new entries – Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell was cautioned for a tackle on Watford midfielder Ben Watson during the Black Cats’ 1-0 home loss yesterday. Newcastle’s match-winner Ayoze Perez also accrued his fourth booking of the season after a late challenge on Jan Vertonghen in this afternoon’s 2-1 victory at the Lane.

Steve McClaren’s men now supply the Tightrope with three players – more than any other side – as Perez joins Vurnon Anita and Cheick Tiote on the naughty step.

There’s still time for a couple of protagonists to topple, though. Leicester’s Robert Huth and Chelsea’s Diego Costa are the men in question ahead of tomorrow evening’s match at the King Power, though the latter’s chances of taking part remain in question, bearing in mind that he’s failed to start the previous two matches.

With three more Gameweeks still to navigate until the limit is increased from five cautions to ten on New Year’s Day, there are, in theory, as many as 144 players still at risk of the Tightrope. West Brom are the club most affected, as they have ten players with at least two yellows to their name. Liverpool and United, meanwhile, have just four players in a similar situation.

Cautions for Tom Carroll and Danny Rose means that Tottenham remain at the summit for yellow cards accrued – Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been booked a total of 37 times in top-flight fixtures. West Brom (34), Liverpool (33), Newcastle (32) and Sunderland (31) are the next culpable, though in contrast, Arsenal have been the best behaved, with just 16 league bookings.

In terms of overall yellows, Stoke’s Erik Pieters and Newcastle’s Jack Colback now joined Norwich midfielder Alex Tettey at the summit with seven yellows apiece. Colback has now extended his record as the most booked player since the start of last season – he leads second-placed Lee Cattermole by 19 cautions to 17. That trio could yet fall foul of the ten card-limit in the current calendar year, then, should they be booked in their trio of remaining 2015 fixtures.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp has defended the tackle by Craig Gardner that led to Dejan Lovren being stretchered off with a knee problem at Anfield:

“He played the ball, a millisecond before he hit Dejan. It was like the whole game: on the edge of everything. But he played the ball.”

Tony Pulis, meanwhile, went on the offensive and claimed the hosts were far more culpable:

“The two worst challenges in the game are James Milner’s challenge on Gardner and Martin Skrtel’s challenge on Salomon Rondon. Gardner has played the ball. Skrtel has gone right over the ball.”

Man United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger is the only player currently unavailable due to suspension. The midfielder was retrospectively slapped with a three-match ban in midweek following an elbowing incident involving West Ham’s Winston Reid in the Gameweek 15 goalless draw at Old Trafford. Having sat out yesterday’s loss to Bournemouth, Schweinsteiger will also miss the upcoming league encounters with Norwich and Stoke.

    After the game Pochettino has decided to opt against the Kane 'false 9' and go back to usual tactics due to poor team displays. Kane will be a proper #9 like he was a few weeks ago.

    Wouldn't be surprised if that happened ^

      It's so frustrating owning him, especially after getting rid of Ighalo for him. Luckily Ighalo has tougher fixtures that should slow him down now.

    The GW had been going so well until my big players stepped out.
    Kane... hmm now a big decision about whether to hold.

            I just think there's a chance Butland is now flavour of the month his returns are unsustainable and I think WBA have the better fixtures for the mid term.

            4 pts from 3 games, a win and a draw ffs and a loss.

            Need to hit big in the last three games.

              WBA definitely have the better fixtures, but I don't think they are good enough for the double up

              Just hope that if you make it you don't get a draw like we actually got in the euros

              Conembol is outrageously tight, we have 3 pts from three games but are in a favoured position against Argentina

                I didn't really mind the draw for Euro 2016.

                I think we could beat the Swedes and the Belgians will struggle to break us down the pressure is theirs they are world no.1s we had to qualify via play off in that scenario we get our best results.

                Italy will be tight because they play defensive which again could suit us.

                    We are unfashionable.

                    But I think Martin knows his best team now and that took a bit if time through qualification the team has changed.

                    Brady developed, Hendricks came on, McCkean showed his worth, Long proved he's the no.1 striker, Walters never let's us down, Whelan plays that holding role like a demon with McCarthy, and Randolph claimed the shirt.

                    Plenty to be positive about.

                Cheers re: the double up will give this a fair bit of thought this week.

                UEFA C depending on how our results go qualification is still possible but need a few wins badly.

    GW17: Gomes->Butland
    GW18: Kane->Aguero (if fit)
    GW19: Bellerin+Deulofeu -> Dawson + Ramsey

    Most likely my GW17 team:

    Butland
    Moreno Alderweireld Kolarov
    Mahrez(C) Özil(VC) Silva Hazard
    Giroud Ighalo Lukaku

    (Hennessey) Alli Monreal Simpson

    Looks quite decent to be honest, only benching Monreal because Kolarov and Moreno offer more of a attacking threat.

    Most attacking teams for the GW so far...the table is upside down for actual returns.

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/3846/

    How is it even possible that we did so badly out of the second team given the stats of the bottom team...sheesh.

        Agreed.

        Lukaku Ighalo Ozil Mahrez Vardy Smalling seem the only reliable picks so far.

      And...Gameweek attacking stats per player. Those touches in the box for sixth place are massive.. proving just how kak he has become.

        I have discovered that touches in the box aren't all that. Passes received in the Final Third are more reliable.

          reliable for what though? they're certainly a poor correlation with goals scored, and worse than TiB as well, although neither are particularly useful really.

    I normally play FF quite sensibly, but I'm genuinely considering transferring in and captaining Mitrovic for one week and then transferring him to Aguero for Sunderland at home. Unless there are injuries.

    Someone talk me out of this

    All set?

    Butland - Hennessy
    Sagna - Simpson - Moreno - Toby - VVD
    Hazard - Silva - Ramsey - Barkley - Mahrez
    Kane - Lukaku - Vardy

    Have loads in the bank, just feel I should have bought Ozil by now...
