Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 19

Chelsea were without a trio of injured players for yesterday’s trip to United. Everton have worries in the centre of the park, Mousa Dembele is doubtful again for Spurs, whilst West Ham are hopeful on a weekend return for Dimitri Payet. Here’s the latest from yesterday’s matches..

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed the Gunners win over Bournemouth with a minor ankle problem, according to Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal boss also played down Kieran Gibbs’ late withdrawal:

“He [Flamini] might be alright. I could have pushed him but he was a little risk so I decided not to take it because it was an inflamed ankle.”

Aston Villa
Remi Garde was without Jores Okore for the trip to Norwich due to a knee problem:

“His knee was injured. I don’t know how serious. As the game took place very soon after the last one, he had a swollen knee and couldn’t play.”

Chelsea
Gary Cahill missed the trip to United with a foot problem, Guus Hiddink has confirmed, whilst Cesc Fabregas was sidelined due to illness. Loic Remy was unavailable due to a calf complaint.

Crystal Palace
Damien Delaney missed the Eagles’ clash with Swansea after picking up a knock in the weekend draw at Bournemouth.

Everton
James McCarthy returned to action from a groin problem but lasted less than half an hour before suffering a recurrence of the injury. Roberto Martinez has further concerns in the centre of the park after McCarthy’s replacement, Tom Cleverley, was also forced off:

“To lose Tom Cleverley through injury and to get a reaction, a flare up from James McCarthy is a real negative. It was a blow to lose James so early. We felt we needed an extra energy and you saw that with his impact in with the assist for the first goal. Tom then felt his Achilles tendon and we will have to assess it. He tried to stay on as long as he could. He played the pass for Romelu Lukaku for the second goal but he had to come off. He made a really big impact when he came on and he was playing a massive role.”

Newcastle
Steve McClaren was forced to make a last-minute change to his XI for yesterday’s trip to West Brom after Rob Elliot dropped to the bench due to illness. Vurnon Anita was replaced late on after sustaining a hamstring injury, with McClaren fearing the problem is “a bad one”.

Swansea
Federico Fernandez (foot) and Wayne Routledge (knock) were both unavailable for the Swans’ trip to Selhurst Park yesterday.

Tottenham
Mousa Dembele was withdrawn just before the break against Watford yesterday due to a recurrence of his ongoing ankle problem. After the 2-1 win, Mauricio Pochettino went on to say:

“We need to wait and assess him tomorrow. We hope it’s not too bad. Maybe one week, two weeks.”

West Brom
Victor Anichebe was forced off with a hamstring problem late on during the Baggies home win over Newcastle. Jonas Olsson was withdrawn during the first half with a similar complaint, though Tony Pulis remains optimistic on the duo ahead of the weekend derby with Stoke:

“Vic is a top player. He showed that today. They just couldn’t handle him and he did very well. Fingers crossed he and Jonas will be ok for the Stoke game – it’s been suggested that it might just be cramp. Hopefully it won’t be any more.”

West Ham
Nikica Jelavic was sidelined for yesterday’s win over Southampton with a knee injury. Enner Valencia was forced off with a knee problem late on and James Collins picked up an ankle knock but chairman David Gold expects both to make the weekend clash with Liverpool.

In further positive news, Gold says he is “hopeful” that Dimitri Payet could play some part against the Merseysiders this weekend.

So are we crediting Swansea's defensive improvement to change in management or fixtures?

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 5 months ago

If I were to rate it between fixtures, management & luck:

      Fixtures 50%
      Management 20%
      Luck 30%

Yeah mostly agree. Also think their position in the table has something to do with it- playing in a more scrappy style as they know they're now in a relegation battle

This is a good point too, they've not been down there struggling since before Michu.

Look at the fixtures they keep CS in vs the ones they don't. The fixtures where they got clean sheets are NEW, wat, EVE, nor, WHU, WBA, cry. Most of these teams were on pretty form attacking form when they played Swansea as well.

After hours of moving the armband back and forth between Özil and Aguero yesterday, I finally put it on Özil and logged off.

Today, I have to admit I'm still hoping for an Aguero brace. This is mainly because I know so very well the feeling of picking the "wrong" captain, and in this case I only wish the best for all the Aguero captainers out there.

*While writing this, I'm a little shocked to discover that the English language seems to lack a word for this particular feeling. In norwegian we say "unne", and the word basically means the opposite of "envy" or more precisely the opposite of "begrudge". The closest I got to translating this feeling to english was "wish the best for".

If I'm wrong, though, and such a word does in fact exist, I'm very much interested in learning it! But if it doesn't, I want to encourage the sharp minds of this community to invent such a word, because to me it's a word worth using - and it's a word this community seems to be in need of at times.

I don't understand why it's like that. Usually I just log off during matches, and it's mainly because of the negative atmosphere in here.

Yeah it's not nice at all. I don't understand why all the vermin turn up at match times tbh. There are other ways of finding out what's going in the games.

I used google translate for "unne" to english, and it actually translated it to "begrudge". Ironically with the opposite meaning.

what a lovely sentiment 😉 You re right though, English does lack a word meaning the opposite of "Schadenfreude" , maybe we'll have to borrow "Mitfreude" also. Sympathetic joy is as good as I can get in English.

Not sure. It might be because I'm mainly a fixtures over form person, and that hasn't worked well this season. Form has been king by some way. And i tend to try to get players in before they do well, but other than KDB, that hasn't worked for me either. The template has been running wild.

You're only 100 points off within the top 100k. 120 points off top 70k..

If you just start edging 8 pts+ per week from now, you can still have a strong finish. One awesome GW and you're within a chance.

Also do take into account majority of the top 1m have used chips so its only downhill for them.

Very common front group. You will have to do well by choosing defenders wisely. Darmian can be the only inexpensive way into Man U who do keep clean sheets. I am thinking of doubling on Man U and Spurs defence. So "C"

I am crapping myself as my Mini league opponent has him but I am up 16 points this week mainly by going for Ozil.

      early thoughts for this mess:

      Myhill, McCarthy
      Bell, Kola, Moreno, Simpson, Ward
      Barkley, KDB, Mahrez, Özil, Wijnaldum
      Ighalo, kaku, Vardy

      2 FT, £7.4

      any obvious move(s)?

      Thanks in advance!

City defence is a shambles, could do with Man Utd defence coverage. Or if you're feeling more differential Ivanovic, Williams or Dawson are good shouts.

Personally as well I have Barkley and Lukaku, but thinking of getting rid of Barkley soon for either Payet/Arnautovic.

          So i was thinking
          Kolarov -Wolly
          Kane-Aguero
          Ozil/KDB - Arnie

Who do you have left to play tonight?

      Aguero, Vardy, Mahrez for me.
Hoping for a game full of goals. 🙂

A Silva show would be delightful.

KDB/Vardy to get red card and I will be ecstatic.

With Sanchez, Payet & Aguero coming back into the frame, anyone else considering wildcarding fairly early?

No - I would save 2 FT's and work a team around a template of: Sanchez, Ozil, Payet, Mahrez, Aguero.

Also one thing worth considering is out of those 3 only Aguero most likely needed urgently if he explodes. Payet will probably be another 3/4 weeks before hitting top form due to long term injury.

Sanchez still another 3 weeks to recover.

Some pretty hyped products of La Masia are being shopped around in the forthcoming transfer window, two of them rumoured to be approaching PL: Sergio Samper to Arsenal for rumoured €6M, and Sandro Ramirez to Tottenham for twice the price. These are big prospects, so may well be good investments for those prices.

What I wonder is why another extremely highly touted talent, Grimaldo, moved to Benfica for a mere €1,5M. Were there really not other takers?

In other rumours, Rémy is moving from Chelsea to Villa. Could be a good move both for PL and for FPL.

Remy is going to be popular amongst the prem teams short on goals - expect a bidding war right till end of xfr window.
