Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

Its a common misconception here that when Dembele plays Alli plays deeper and when he doesn't Alli plays more forwards. Alli ALWAYS plays in the hole or #10 . Dembele plays in the double pivot with Dier. In Dembele's absence , Carroll plays in the double pivot with Dier. The attacking 4 (KAne , Lamela , Eriksen , Alli) does not change.

    1. sleecc
      • 8 Years

This is only true in recent games. Alli was playing in the double pivot along Dier earlier on this season.

Yes , but Alli has become an attacking mid in the last few games

Nothing stops Poch to play Alli in the deeper role, only Poch knows what is the best for the team, don't forget Chadli is back.

Poch rates him highly, and he has been playing very well either as an attacking mid or deeper, Dembele did play further up before he joined Spurs. Chadli is mainly an attacking player. You will never know who will occupy the position behind the striker.

chadders back but seems he's not quite good-mini appearances-maybe an fa cup run out would be good
toby and dier's skillfull play (and management) allows poch the luxury of a fluid midfield and ability to tolerate the ridiculous sideways passing of carroll while awaiting the return of the regulars

we will have to disagree on this one

Spurs have many players who can play along side Dier or in front of him, no one can guaranteed Alli will always play in the hole.

A formal £40.5m (€50m) offer from City to Schalke for Leroy Sané is imminent! [Bild]

Bild reports that the Premier League-title hopefuls are preparing a huge €55m (£40.5m) offer for Schalke attacking midfielder Leroy Sane, who has attracted the club's interest of late with four goals and four assists in the Bundesliga this season.

So who to bench this week?

    A) Mahrez (tot)
    B) Barkley (Mci)

I'm currently on B..might even sub him for Payet. Thus putting Mahrez on the bench anyway.

LEICESTER TABLE £7.3M OFFER FOR JUVENTUS DEFENSIVE TARGET

Leicester City are looking to beat Juventus to the signature of Sampdoria’s Pedro Pereira by making an offer of £7.3million, Express reports.

Leicester are under heavy competition for his services as Juventus are said to be very keen on luring him to the club.

However, the Foxes could have the upper hand in regards to the transfer given that they want to sign the player immediately, while the Serie A giants are seeing the RIGHT-BACK as a future addition.

He has so far featured eight times in the league following the injury to first choice right-back Mattia Cassani, while being able to provide one assist so far.

Choosing a backup midfielder for the bench, debating between Albrighton and Drinkwater. Albrighton increasing in ownership meanwhile Drinkwater is dropping but the extra .4 doesn't seem worth it. Thoughts? Don't really know much about them.

    1. Differential C (Mark)
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 5 months ago

I would take Albrighton. Drinkwater is a dm, who lies deep and cuts supply towards opponent's striker. No goal threat, but occasionally makes a great throughball for Vardy when the opportunity arrives.
Albrighton regularly drives down the byline and links up with Fuchs, but recently his goal threat is diminishing as he becomes reluctant to put the ball in and content to just pass the ball to Mahrez or Fuchs.

Can't find them in the league anymore even though they have the league on their FPL page.

Moreno to anybody less than £6.0m for a hit? My other four defenders are Bellerin, Nyom, Dawson and Huth - only the first two are playable!

I had a pitiful score of 29 this week. I don't care that I lost my cup game & I don't care that I dropped 16k in OR from 36k to 52k. The only thing I did care about was surviving in LMS & I did haha.

What do you guys think I should go this week. I was thinking of saving my ft

    Butland (McCarthy)
    Smalling, Bellerin, Toby, Dann (VVD)
Ozil (c), KDB, Mahrez, Alli (Barkley)
    Kane, Lukaku (Vardy)

    (a) save ft or
    (b) VVD out - Cresswell in or
    (c) VVD out - Williams in or
    (d) VVD out - Smith in or
    (e) Vardy out - Ighalo in (although I might keep Vardy if he's out only 2 weeks)

    Thoughts & thanks.

Already done Deulofeu --> Alli, still got 1 ft. Thinking of doing Vardy --> Ighalo today to avoid price changes, good idea or wait until after cup matches?

I hate H2H money leagues.. 3 draws in last 4 GWs.. trailing by 12 points with 18 games to go.. damn!!

All H2Hs are too luck based. You can have most points and finish last with no wins with bad luck.

You're obviously playing the fixtures, rather than form. The moves were probably not worth a hit... but failure/success will be determined over the next few GWs. Hopefully it works out well for you
