Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

Over 20,000 #FPL managers triple captained Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil v Newcastle

Good news for those still with their triple captain chip.

AOA chip is best when you have a front 8 with good fixtures or poor defence. Triple captain is tough... DGW player is the obvious choice but hard to tell

Hmm that's tough I'm running the risk of an early transfer with Payet but it's not wise with the games he has over the break. But he is sure to rise a bit

The only thing in my favour is it gives me a front 8 of:
            Mahrez/Ozil/Kdb/Ali/Payet
            Aguero/Kane/Lukaku
So I need to bench someone regardless(thinking Mahrez right now)

I know, not usually hoe I play, but I've done well in the TV game, so I decided to treat myself to Ali over Stan and bench accordingly.
My back 5 is relatively strong so I justified it pap.

Happy new year all! Difficult to resist wholesale changes after a 31 point GW, but I did manage to bench big points for the 5th week in a row. I now stand at 100 pts benched over 5 weeks.

    2FTs and 2.9 ITB.

    Butland/Hennessey
    Bellerin/Alde/Moreno/Dawson/Nyom
    KDB/Ozil/Mahrez/Arnautovic/Alli
    Kane/Lukaku/Giroud

My first thought is perhaps Moreno and Giroud to Smith (or another cheapie) and Ighalo. Then maybe look at Aguero/Sanchez/Payet over the next few. Thoughts?

It happens. I benched the wrong one of Butland or Myhill for 6 weeks in a row, absolutely fuming. You know though that the reason they were benched was logical and many others would have too. If you had played them over others, it would have been a >50% punt.

Yep, very annoying. I ditched DDG 2 weeks ago for Butland, DDG kept a cleanie, Hennessey on my bench had 7 pts, and Butland has 3 pts in the last 2. Frustrating.

2 FT. 4.7 ITB. Want to do Vardy -> Aguero. Which other transfer to accomodate?

    A) Arnie -> Stanislas (Alli will become 4th mid)

    B) Arnie -> Antonio

    C) KDB -> Yaya

It is early for Payet I should have waited until after the cup games and Liverpool have been poor Walcott could easily do well if he plays so it may not be worth a hit. I'd do Vardy to Iggy for free or Walcott to Payet for free

Given Kane last season and Mahrez this season I'm trying to forget about price when considering the cheaper options.

Is Alli a viable 4th midfielder?

Sure is. If we ignore the pricing and look at his stats, the team he plays for and the points he is getting, he has to be treated as a 4th midfielder now surely?

Yes , he took 6 shots against Everton . Tell me that isn't 3rd or 4th mid quality

Moment of madness/weakness I hit the WC to get Kun in.

    WC team is

    Butland, Myhill
    Dier, Bellerin, Cresswell, Huth, Williams
    Ozil, KDB, Mahrez, Payet, Alli
    Aguero, Lukaku, Ighalo

    Any risks or weak points?

    Thanks

Would reconsider Myhill, WBA not doing great at keeping clean sheets and the Foster threat looming. Hennessey or Gomes probably better cheap picks.

Also the obvious benching headache in your front 8.

      Looks preety solid to me.

    Butland / Gomes
    Smalling / Ward / Cresswell / Moreno / Dawson
    Mahrez / KDB / Ozil / Alli / Siggy
    Iggy / Kane / Lukaku

Anything here worth a -4? Depending on how Aguero looks midweek I might do Kane > Kun

Had a dire week with 24pts.

To AOA or not to AOA that is the question.

Otherwise, i'll be running this this lot:

    Butland (Nor)
Ward (Avl), Alderweireld (LEI), Bellerin (Liv)
Payet (Bou), Alli (LEI), Mahrez (Tot), KDB (EVE), Ozil (Liv)
    Aguero (EVE), Kane (LEI)

Hennessey (Avl); Lukaku (Mci), Simpson (Tot), Moreno (ARS)

    A -4 gives me:

    Schmeichel
    Smalling - Bertrand - Rose
    Mahrez - Alli - Ozil - Silva
    Aguero - Lukaku - Kane

    Myhill - 4.7m def - Huth - Stanislas

    I'm pretty tempted...

It's okay. Could have defensive problems soon - Huth's fixtures about to get bad. Need to replace Myhill with Hennessey. Bertrand, Smallling not keeping clean sheets and Rose is looking like a rotation issue.

I like the attack though - except from maybe Silva.

Hard to pick holes in that really. Obviously some popular picks missing (Ighalo, Payet, Sanchez...) but it's not possible to have everyone. The comeback starts here?

Getting a green arrow 2 weeks ago then not getting one this week has made me think the comeback will never be on.

But it's past the half way mark - I really need to try something different. Aguero (c)...although it probably won't be that different come start of next GW.

Payet in for Silva is a possibility but can't make all those transfers in one week.

Silva isn't a bad pick anyway - he'll get a double figure haul soon enough, he always does. Not saying you shouldn't shift him but he always offers hope until you do.
