Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

    Morning chaps,

Actually had a ok gameweek for once which makes a nice change but still absolutely languishing around the 700k mark.

Have two free transfers this week and was thinking Moreno & Walcott > Rangel & Payet which would help to free up some cash for sanchez. Rest of team is:

    DDG / McCarthy

    Kolarov / Bellerin / Francis / Simpson / Moreno

    Silva / Mahrez / Willian / Stanislas / Walcott

    Aguero / Lukaku / Kane

    0.2ITB.

    What do you think?

    Cheers.

If that gameweek wasn't bad enough, I went out the cup to someone with the name 'THE ARSENAL'.

I went out to a person who completely wasted their bench boost and scored 49 points. So annoying.

Toying with a WC draft...thoughts on this?

    Butland Rudd
    Azpi Vert Walker Williams Rangel
    KDB Ozil Payet Mahrez 4.3
    Aguero Lukaku Ighalo

Can't have em all but my main concerns are

    1) No Spurs attack
    2) No United defence (maybe a concern)
    3) KDB and Aguero might be too much but KDB > Sanchez can be done

I dont follow xG to determine who's good for defence and who's not. xG for me, are only for forwards and strikers.

The defence is hardly good, been following their games, the high pressing games makes them vulnerable at the back.

Norwich are pretty toothless in attack. Their defence is good but same cannot be said of their attack

Right now I have KDB and Aguero in my draft, with the aim of dropping KDB to Sanchez if he fires...while keeping Ozil.

Had Ozil at start of season and told myself to keep as long as he's fit. Sold for Sanchez, got a few goals but wasted too much time in getting Ozil back.

Shall try and keep Ozil as long as he's fit.

Got Mane stinking up my team and 2 FTs but i'm thinking of making changes in my defense instead

    Ddg (Hennessey)
    Souare Moreno Dawson (Rose Simpson)
    Ozil Kdb Mahrez Alli (Mane)
    Ighalo Aguero(c) Lukaku
    3.2 in the bank
    2 FTs

    so..
    A) Rose to Cresswell
    B) Mane to Payet
    C) Both A) and B)
    D) Rose + Moreno to Cresswell + Azpilicueta

Arent we a bit carried away by last week performers in here now?

Payet is just back from injury and are facing Bournemouth in an away game. They are actually doing quite well at the time. He is class, no doubt, but why not wait until he completes a full game first?

And suddenly Ramsey and Walcott are players that need to go. Isnt that a bit jerky? We all know what they are capable of and it is just a matter of time before they crush an opponent by multiple goals. Wouldnt be very surprised if that happend against a very weak Liverpool defence.

I also see that many want to remove their Palace defenders after their loss against Chelsea. One week ago they were on the hot list. They are dirt cheap and in a few weeks time they have really nice fixtures coming up.

This. On top of that, he isn't very highly owned either, so if you were to transfer him out and he scored, it's easier to take it on the chin. Whereas it's frustrating to have him when he blanks, while other players are still getting points.

I shifted him this week to make Alli my 4th midfielder.

Disagree. Had Rams and sold him. He blanked last four and actually except two games early December, he blanked the whole season. He is 8mil and you expect more for that price. Just look at YYT and his stats, for almost same money.

Payet will have had a full game in the cup by the time the next GW comes around, this is where people football extends beyond the PL...

Ramsey and Walcott had 3 decent fixtures over the Xmas period to be assessed on and flopped, you don't get much time on FPL as many others (e.g hazard /,Sanchez owners) will testify to. There see plenty other options in midfield and Ozil covers arsenal imo.

Palace defenders are ok because some are relatively cheap, if I had Ward or Souare I wouldn't be rushing to transfer out

    A lot of people WCing

Surprising, considering how template most teams are. Does that mean we all need to WC?

I'm holding my WC for as long as I can, nothing 2FT and a hit can't fix at the mo.

      the tipping point has reached....

most are WCing in desperation after another GW window has slammed shut on chasers...especially as most of the community went with Ramsey/Walcott/Mahrez as differential captains this week.

People are looking at bringing Aguero, Payet in as a priority - and if they're going to do it for a hit, they may as well refresh the whole squad - that's the thinking. I'm more inclined to wait for DGW season.

Best keeper going forward? Funds not an issue. Currently have Myhill and Begovic , so need to get new keeper else If Myhill gets dropped in next week or two will have no one playing.

Have thought of Rudd(3.9)/Hennessy (4.1) combo but this seems a little risky. Not sure which premium keeper is worth it though.
