Captain Sensible – Gameweek 31

Next up this Friday afternoon, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, casting an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

With over 39% of the votes cast, Harry Kane is the standout candidate in this week’s poll ahead of Tottenham’s home clash with Bournemouth. After bagging a brace in last week’s win over Villa, the 10.3-priced frontman will be looking to get the better of a backline that’s managed just three clean sheets on their travels all season.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (23%) takes second, with form and fixture very much on his side. The Swansea midfielder has racked up seven goals and an assist in his last 11 outings and is looking for a third double-figure haul in four at the Liberty this weekend. Up next is a visit from whipping boys Villa and with Remi Garde’s men shipping 17 goals in their previous five, captaining their opponents’ key protagonists has proven a canny tactic of late.

The weekend Manchester derby has dented our faith in Sergio Aguero. A blank at Norwich means the Argentine has now failed to score in three of the last four Gameweeks and with United up next at the Etihad, only 9% are trusting him with the captaincy this week.

The in-form Romelu Lukaku earns just 7% of this week’s votes for a home clash with Arsenal. Having racked up three goals and an assist in his last four league outings, the Belgian notched twice in Saturday’s cup win over Chelsea and has the momentum to put the Gunners’ title tilt to the sword.

Elsewhere, there are a cast of differentials for those willing to take a punt. Leicester duo Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy (both just 2%) cannot be ruled out as they travel to a Palace outfit that’s lost five on the bounce at Selhurst Park.

Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez visit an Everton side with the worst defensive record in the top-flight in front of their own fans. West Ham’s Dimitri Payet, meanwhile, has bagged four of his five double-figure hauls away from home this season and travels to Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea have conceded in each of their last eight.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

First one, really is a choice of who you think will win. Go with your gut.

      Second one - I'd play Alli...just.

Is it sure that Firmino is going to start behind the striker with Coutinho on the wings or it can be the other way around?
    What are the chances?

I asked this because I was just checking the scores of Southampton's last 10 matches and i think most of the goals against them were scored by the centre line and plus Firmino being a pacey player can cause problems.

Will Palace go to attack or go for the 0-0 vs Leicester? I think this plays a huge part in how Mahrez and Vardy will do, will they be able to counter-attack a lot or not...

Would suggest the WC32or33, BB34, TC 37 is favoured to the TC34, WC36, BB37 option on here by about 75% to 25% judging by post responses, but personally I don't think there's much in it at all. First option if you're wanting to consolidate a lead, second option to chase down is probably what it comes down to.

So I see the Champions League draw thats supposedly an open draw at this stage went as planned again.

Cant be risking a semi without Barca, Real or Bayern, so keep them apart and match City with PSG just to make sure the 4th team is a big club from a 3rd big country for TV reasons.

Then give Barca the harder of the other 3 as they should see them off.

Had Atletico not beat Barca in the last 8 in 2014, this would be the 5th reason running with a semi finals of Barca, Real, Bayern and Another.

Its been Chelsea/Juventus/Dortmund and now PSG or City.

Amazing how these 3 teams get to thelast 8 in an open unseeded draw every season yet never draw each other once isn't it?

I know a ball hasnt been kicket yet but I'm going to hazard a guess and say the 2016/17 semis are Barca Real Bayern and one other (hopefully Leicester).

Predictable rubbish tournament. I'd like to hope it was just coincidence they all avoid each other till the semis every year but then, I cant say I trust the people at UEFA to be less corrupt than the ones at FIFA

Well, in the round of 16, teams Of same country isn't allowed, also group winners don't face group winners, so it's not possible in round of 16

They have to play each other at some stage. Doesn't really matter when.

As much as I find these theories weirdly fun (and utter bobbins), it's a live draw, which you can watch uninterrupted and scrutinize. If the only argument for a conspiracy is: what are the chances of that happening...then really, that isn't much of an argument. It's a statistical possibility, just as much as it is a possibility that they will play each other. A querk that it's happened again, but the argument of 'what are the chances...?!' isn't really any evidence at all.

Im not saying its fixed but its terribly predictable and boring.

A return to league winners only, straight knoxlout, open unseeded draw would be better i think.

Far less repetition and much more chance of winners from other nations.

As it is, we are more or less watchingthe same teams play each other over and over and before they do, games arent that competitive. Its just boring.

all football tournaments that involve seeding are unfair to a certain degree, they favour the better/ higher seeded teams

the thing is that it also makes it very difficult for lesser teams to break into higher rankings as well given that most tournaments follow this format. Also, the fact that tournaments such as the World Cup are restrictive to geographical areas in the early stages.

            1. Sánchez
              • 11 Years
              8 years, 3 months ago

I dont mind geographical. International football is infrequent and you cant buy titles. Club football has become the same rubbish (CL anyway) and far too often. Remember when Barca v Arsenal was a treat? Now its an annual game and a formality. 3 foreigner rule being stopped was by far the biggest mistake club football could have made to ruin competition but 4 spots to top nations didnt help either. The FA Cup isnt seeded. I prefer that. I would like the world cup to be 64 teams straight knockout no seeding too.

    Van Dijk, Ivanovic, Huth
    Sigurdsson C, Ozil, Mahrez, Arnautovic
    Kane, Aguero, Vardy

Subs: McCarthy, Daniels, Van Aanholt, King

I have two free transfers and have no idea what to do. 1.7 in the bank. Anyone got any suggestions? Spurs defender? Dawson in? Better second goalie?

Depends when/if you're wildcarding. If you're holding your wildcard for later, use FT to bring in an Arsenal or Man Utd defender in preparation for DGW34. If you're WC'ing 33, I'd prob bring in Williams.
