The Scout Mission – Gameweek 32

Next up, we turn our attentions to the weekend’s ten fixtures. With many Fantasy managers preparing to wildcard next week, we’re monitoring the form of Arsenal, Liverpool, Sunderland and Newcastle’s strikers, whilst City’s fit-again Belgian and the battle of West Ham’s budget midfielders are also on the agenda.

Welbeck’s form ahead of the double….
As we prepare to reassemble our squads for the upcoming doubles, there’s promising signs that the former United man has nailed down a regular role under Arsene Wenger. Welbeck has been named in the Arsenal first XI in three of the last four Gameweeks and led the line in back-to-back clashes against Spurs and Everton, heightening his appeal at a price of 7.3 in FPL. With his opener against the Toffees taking his tally to three strikes and an assist in just five appearances, Welbeck may well find his way into more wildcard plans if he produces the goods at home to Watford.

Iwobi’s minutes….
Handed a surprise start away to Barcelona in the Champions League, the youngster retained his spot for the Gunners’ trip to Goodison. Iwobi vindicated his manager’s decision by netting the second in a 2-0 win and looks to have edged ahead of the likes of Theo Walcott and Joel Campbell for a role on the flank. At a price of 4.5, his value for money will be hard to ignore for many wildcarders if Wenger unleashes him from the off against the Hornets on Saturday.

…and Sturridge’s….
Liverpool’s fit-again frontman highlighted his goal-getting capabilities by bagging his fourth goal in just over 400 minutes of pitch time this term against Southampton in the previous Gameweek. Encouragingly for any would-be suitors, Jurgen Klopp chose to start Sturridge at St Mary’s just three days after he was named in the first XI United in the Europa League, which suggests that the striker’s fitness is on the up after numerous stints on the sidelines. With nine fixtures in the final nine Gameweeks, including a couple of doubles, Sturridge – with a mere 1% ownership – could prove a deadly differential if Klopp can keep him out of the treatment room.

De Bruyne’s return to the City fold….
After a couple of months on the sidelines, the Belgian’s return to full training earlier this week has Fantasy managers on alert as we start to firm up our wildcard plans. De Bruyne’s average of 5.5 points per appearances is greater than any City attacker this season and with Manuel Pellegrini’s men set for a double Gameweek 34, his fitness will be eagerly monitored. Now down to 4% ownership, the summer signing could be a devastating differential if he can prove his fitness from this point onwards.

Mitrovic’s momentum….
The Serbian seems to have won the race to lead the line under Rafa Benitez at Newcastle, starting both matches since the new manager was installed at St James’. Mitrovic’s equaliser against Sunderland backed up his recent improvement since the departure of Steve McClaren – he’s joint-top with Harry Kane for efforts inside the box over the last two Gameweeks, with seven apiece. At a time when Georginio Wijnaldum has been moved to a deep-lying role in the double-pivot, Mitrovic could emerge as the best route into the Magpies attack for the double and beyond.

Lanzini as the Hammers’ budget option….
The Hammers midfielder threw his hat into the ring ahead of their pair of double Gameweeks by netting in the 2-2 stalemate at Stamford Bridge last time around. With many looking to acquire Dimitri Payet for the run-in, Lanzini and Michail Antonio could be set to battle it out for our affections as the Hammers host struggling Palace this time around. Priced at just 4.9, Lanzini could barge his way past the former Forest flier if he can start to replicate the form that served up three goals and two assists in six appearances between Gameweek 8-13.

Mahrez and Kane’s pre-wildcard form….
As we start to plan for the impending doubles, the popular Fantasy pair remain in fine fettle as Leicester and Spurs battle it out for the title. Mahrez has bagged the winner in two of the Foxes last three, whilst two goals and an assist against Bournemouth helped Kane produce back-to-back double figure hauls for the first time this term. Owned by 68% and 46% respectively, can we really afford to cash them in at this point?

Martinez’ wide men….
With a trio of double Gameweeks to contend with, the Toffees look primed for wildcard investment over the run-in. Although Ross Barkley’s security of starts ensures he remains the favoured midfield option, his lack of form – ten blanks in 12 appearances – has been anything but convincing. Aaron Lennon has now started the last six and racked up four goals and an assist over that period, though with the likes of Kevin Mirallas now back from suspension and big-money signing Oumar Niasse getting amongst the goals over the international break, Martinez’ penchant for rotation could still scupper our plans for investing in the Toffees options out wide.

Bolasie’s chance to shine….
It’s fair to say that Palace’s form could barely be more unconvincing as they prepare for back-to-back doubles in Gameweeks 33 and 34. Having conceded in each of the last 11, many may baulk at Scott Dann’s 5.7 asking price, whilst at the other end of the pitch, the uncertainty surrounding Connor Wickham’s fitness is enough to deter investment. In the centre of the park, though, there’s hope that Yannick Bolasie may spring into form just in time. Granted, the wide man has been anything but consistent but, as ten and 15-point hauls against West Brom and Newcastle attest to, he’s capable of explosive returns on his day. We’ll be keeping a keen eye on his Upton Park showing, particularly with that pair of home clashes against Norwich and Everton in Gameweek 33 in mind.

Defoe as a third forward….
Back-to-back goals against Southampton and Newcastle in the last two Gameweeks took the Sunderland forward’s total to 12 for the season – a tally bettered by only five other frontmen. Despite his key contribution and a very kind 5.1 price tag, Defoe remain in just 4% of FPL teams as the Black Cats prepare to host West Brom this weekend. With a double Gameweek 37 also to follow, another goal-getting display could earn him a place in some wildcard teams as he becomes increasingly vital to the Wearsiders’ survival bid.

      1) considering holding Kun for 37/38

      2) considering a front 3 of Lukaku Naismith Defoe for 37 and 38

      3) it's about total points scored not spending your whole budget. I always seem to have 5m or more in the bank in week 38

I came to my senses about Aguero..would have 10 in 35 but it doesn't bother me as I would already have 9 DGWers for 37.

    Darlow - Robles
    Otamendi - Bellerin - Dann - Cresswell - Sakho
    Sanchez - Ozil - Payet - Antonio - Bolasie
    Aguero - Lukaku - Rashford

Dann + Bolasie > Smalling + Firmino for GW34 and then 0.3m left over.

Rashford should start every remaining game of the season IMO but if not I'd have a solid 5-man mid anyways.

        A) LVG is an advocate of youth and is the reason that United's season isn't already over. He should be one of the first names on the teamsheet to see out the season. Don't fix what ain't broke.

        B) Even if Rooney claims a spot up top (I think Mata is more likely to drop), he's also looked more than adept out wide, inter-changing with Martial fluidly.

        C) He's 4.5m and I like my mid so if I have to play 3-5-2, it's not the end of the world. Plus I'll be slowly switching back to a 3-4-3 soon anyways.

        D) Rooney will be back in full training at the earliest in 10 days so it wouldn't be unusual for him not to hit that target or be eased in, given Euros, when he's ready to play.

    Robles, Darlow
    Bellerin, Sakho, Moreno, Ward, Simpson
    Sanchez, Ozil, Payet, Firmino, Barkley
    Aguero, Lukaku, Wickham

GW34: i) Save or ii) Wickham -> Rashford
GW35: if i) Ward & Wickham -> PVA & Defoe. If ii) Ward -> PVA

    Means 5 DGWers in 33, 14 DGWers in 34, 11 starters in 35 and 11 DGWers in 35

Thing is, with back to back doubles they only have to play to get a decent return. And I've gone for nailed on players. Ward is cheap and has 2 home fixtures in 33, so a reasonable chance of a cleanie. I'd also argue that Barkley is above average - 4th highest scoring mid in the game! I'm torn though. No LEI attack or Spurs is risky.

    copypaste..

    A) LVG is an advocate of youth and Rashford is the reason that United's season isn't already over. He should be one of the first names on the teamsheet to see out the season. Don't fix what ain't broke. He's started United's last 8 games. And he's 18 years old, he doesn't need rest.

    B) Even if Rooney claims a spot up top (I think Mata is more likely to drop), he's also looked more than adept out wide, inter-changing with Martial fluidly.

    C) Rooney will be back in full training at the earliest in 10 days so it wouldn't be unusual for him not to hit that target or be eased in, given Euros, when he's ready to play.

    D) He's 4.5m so it allows you a good mid anyways for a 3-5-2 (or simply drop a mid and switch to a 3-4-3).

I would love to believe that Rashford will be nailed even after Rooney's back.
But unfortunately, that's not the case.

LVG gave some opportunities to the youth, that's true, but did he really want to? Or was it because he didn't have other options with injuries? Rashford would still be unknown if bith Rooney & Martial wasn't out injured.

          Because Rooney was out.
And no other option upfront for LVG, with Martial performing better from the left.

In fact he was in my 1st draft for WC, but the news of Rooney put me off.
Good luck for those who's going with him.

Yeah but Rooney will be returning to full training in 10 days and hasn't played for over 7 weeks. With Euros coming up, there's no sense rushing so unless Rashford has put up complete garbage I can't see him shaking it up like that. If anything I could see him dropping Mata who hasn't been good wide (and Lingard has been inconsistent).

Yep, problem is that he will be back at the worst period.
During the DGW. That will force LVG to tinker upfront and not over-use Rashford.
Had he been back 2 weeks later, that would be a no-brainer to get Rashford IN

                  The price is interesting, agree.
But will he offer a real DGW option? Will he play both matches in 4 days?
If not, I'd prefer going with a SGWer who guarantees goal.

I wonder if LVG appearing to have turned a corner lately with the fans will make a difference. They love that he is blooding young talent and Rashford is playing well. If he drops him and United suffer - LVG back under the spot light? If he plays him and they suffer - well done for standing by and backing the youngster?

No matter what happens, LVG will be in the spot-light until the last GW.
Dropping Rooney and losing will guarantee his sacking.

Rashford doesn't need to bow out to accommodate Rooney though. LVG seems to have decided to not play Mata wide anymore so it could be him that drops out.

Also LVG is gone, he's not getting renewed, and even besides that he does what we wants (which makes it harder to predict).

I can't see anyone really to replace Mata in MID. Even when he's out of form, he offer greater options than the likes of Fellaini, Depay or Lingard.

Actually contemplating WCing this week with Rashford straight in but possibly benched..looking at this WC

            Darlow - Robles
            Otamendi - Bellerin - Dann - Cresswell - Sakho
            Sanchez - Ozil - Payet - Antonio - Bolasie
            Aguero - Lukaku - Rashford

Dann + Bolasie > Smalling + Firmino for GW34 and then 0.3m left over.

1FT left this week. Would you:

    A) Save
    B) Elliot -> Migs - Leaves open the option to delay WC to 36
    C) Elliot -> Adrian/Courtois/Ospina (if no Cech) - sort of commits me to a WC in 33

I'm thinking it has to B for the flexibility, right?

    Hennessey
    Bellerin, Wolly, Simpson
    Sanchez, Payet, Mahrez, Arnie
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

Hey lads, any thoughts on this provisional plan? (D) indicates a DGW for the player.

    GW32:

    Robles
    Bellerin Williams Fuchs
    Ozil (v) Payet Sigurdsson Mahrez
    Vardy Aguero (C) Kane

Bench: McCarthy, Alli, Dawson, Van Dijk

    Transfers: Vardy>Lukaku and Sigurdsson>Firmino (-4)

    GW33:

    Robles (D)
    Van Dijk Williams Fuchs
    Ozil Payet Firmino Mahrez
    Lukaku (D)(TC) Aguero (vTC) Kane

    Bench: McCarthy, Alli, Bellerin, Dawson

    Transfers: Alli>Antonio or Kane>Sturridge/Welbeck/Giroud
Sturridge unlikely to play that much with the Dortmund Europa League game nearby
Antonio has a GW35 blank so I may get Sturridge anyways

    GW34 - 9/11 DGWs

    Robles (D)
    Bellerin (D) Dawson (D) Fuchs
    Özil (D)(v) Payet (D) Firmino (D)(C) Antonio (D)
    Lukaku (D) Aguero (D) Kane

Bench: McCarthy, Mahrez, Williams, Van Dijk

Transfers: Robles>Lloris, maybe Lukaku>Pelle/Vardy for a one week punt too

    GW35:

    Lloris
Bellerin Fuchs Williams Van Dijk Dawson
    Ozil Mahrez Firmino
    Aguero (C) Kane

Bench: McCarthy, Lukaku, Payet (!), Antonio (!)

    GW36: Wildcard
    GW37: Bench Boost

I activated my WC before even making any transfers... just in case it didn't work or something.

Olsson pretty nailed on, right? Looking at a WBA def, can't afford Dawson...

Jags and Clyne looks better though, if Jags is expected to start all their games (not sure).

Double up on LIV def is not recommended imo.
