Captain Sensible – Gameweek 35

Up next this busy Friday afternoon, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of a reduced round of fixtures. As usual, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero holds a substantial lead at the summit with over 44% of the votes cast ahead of a home clash with Stoke. Although City have a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, the Argentine’s six goals in the last four look too good to ignore against a defence that’s conceded four times against both Liverpool and Spurs in their last two matches.

With 28% of the votes, Harry Kane is Aguero’s only real contender as Spurs prepare for the visit of West Brom. Although the Baggies have conceded just four times in five, Kane’s run of three double-figure hauls in five, which includes seven goals, an assist and 11 bonus points, suggests he’ll be a solid rival to the City striker.

Alexis Sanchez is some way back on a mere 5% despite netting three times across double Gameweek 34. The Arsenal midfielder has now racked up six goals and a couple of assists in his last six outings and travels to a Sunderland side with just a single clean sheet in their last nine at the Stadium of Light.

Southampton’s visit to Villa earns Graziano Pelle joint-third spot in the poll. With the midlands side having suffered the ignominy of relegation, the Italian is backed by 5% in light of four goals and three assists in his last five league outings.

Jurgen Klopp’s recent rotation policy means that Daniel Sturridge is another overlooked big-hitter. With Divock Origi ruled out, though, the England international may well lead the line at home to Newcastle – just 3% are willing to roll the dice on the 10.0-priced frontman, who has served up five goals and a pair of assists in six league appearances since returning from injury.

Further down, Pelle’s team-mate Sadio Mane is amongst a handful of candidates on the 1% mark. The Senegal international has netted three times in the last four now and bagged a hat-trick against Villa last season. Dele Alli is another differential option after his two-goal salvo at Stoke and is joined by the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez as all four prepare for home comforts.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

    not feeling confident at all

only have 10 players and 4 of them possibly wont start

I think a lot of hits are being taken this week, you should be fine with a -8. Especially if you are transferring out a blanker, that's effectively just a -2 each

Lads. I would like a Sunderland middy (I never thought I'd hear myself say those words. Ever).

he has not been playing well lately. Big Sam yanked him very early last game.

Watmore is back, and it looks like he will be taking more time from Khazri.

there are no Sunderland midfielders that interest me at all, especially with so many good options elsewhere.

he just came back from injury. by GW37, a lot can happen.

imo, there are only 4 Sunderland players to consider (not including GK, which i have not looked at):

def -- van Aanholt and Kirchoff
          fow -- DeFoe and Borini

i like DeFoe better than Borini, just.

the 2 defenders are close too.

Yeah, I totally agree with thee - I'll also get Defoe and PVA.

But I have Bolasie, i want rid, and I'm trying to force a terrible Sunderland player into the hole - I just want the less terriblelest one as possible...

You mean ones who will/may play twice? I'd go for 12 - keep a few SGWers as you don't want to cripple yourself for GW38.

Everyone with a DGW in 37 still has a game in 38?

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 15 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

Yes - but I mean there is a Cup Final coming up where rest/rotation in 38 will be rife - so you don't want too many Cup Finalists in your squad - and there are also fixtures like Arsenal v Villa and Spurs / Leicester still probably going for the title - so there's a good chance if you load up on DGWers your team for 38 will be severely weaker than others.

            8 years, 2 months ago

Okay, I take your point, I'm not sure how GW37 is going to go, the teams with doubles lack quality, generally speaking, but they'll also be fighting for their lives, so anything could happen

G2G or swap Iwobi to Milner? Would be for -4 but I figure a hit for a potential DWG is worth it, especially when it seems there will be quite a few hits taken this week or people fielding fewer players.

I've seen a few FFSers recommending transferring Payet out ? What's the thinking behind that ? I know he's got poor form and everything but say he scores / assists in GW36 - then we will all be clamoring to get him back for DGW37.

On the other hand, assuming I have just 10 starters this week:
Any merit in going Payet -> Mahrez (-4) tonight ?
If Mahrez scores a goal, you can break even, even if you are getting Payet back for a hit in GW37 (for say KdB).

      Thinking something similar.

      Nasri+Rashford+Coleman>>>Alli+Pelle+PVA(-8).

Most nailed Liverpool defender (particularly this week so I get XI but also looking long term)?

Sturridge (NEW) or Aguero (STK) best shout for captain?

Fixtures look amazing though and I need to pick from a choice of Chelsea/Sunderland/Pool for £5.4m or less?

Way too many options. Best bet is to narrow it down to 2 or 3 to get more replies. That said, Pelle & Milner

Firmino back from injury but playing every match, seems unlikely imo

They're no worse than any of us, really. But like us, they still have to guess.

I have no stats to back them up, so you may be right. Maybe next season a Demi v The Guardian log would prove it one way or the other?

More likely to be Sturridge and no Firmino IMO. Although i think both will start.

the Guardian basically has the lineup Liverpool put on the field vs. Bournemouth. that's shoddy thinking.

that game was pretty meaningless to both teams.

this weeks' game means a whole lot to Newcastle, Sunderland, and Norwich.

i don't think Klopp will play the kids. why would he, under the circumstances?

So here is draft number 356!

    Currently have:

    Robles / DeGea
    Simpson / Bellerin / Sagna / Gabriel / Clyne
    Lanzini / Alli / Milner / Sanchez / Coutinho
    Aguero / Kane/ ?

£5.3 ITB for a striker and will end up with a -8

    Who would you pick:
    A) Defoe
    B) Ulloa

Obviously Defoe is a good Long term/DGW pick but does anyone fancy Ulloa for this week? Can't see Sunderland scoring.

Going without a GK this week also.

    Thank you 🙂

Is gameweek 35 the last week in April or is gameweek 36 also counted as April?
Monthly mini league cash up for grabs.

Does A or B look sound or should I consider something else?

    A) Dann+Nasri > Alderweireld+Alli (-4) and hope Clichy starts

    Or

    B) Clichy> PVA plus the above moves for -8

    Current team:

    ____________Darlow__________
    Bellerin___Sakho__Clichy__Dann*
    Sanchez(c)_Iwobi_Coutinho_Nasri*
    Aguero_______________Sturridge

    Bench: Robles*, Smalling*, Payet*, Martial*
