Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Switzerland

We conclude our Group A analysis this morning with a look at Switzerland. Vladimir Petkovic’s side kick off their Euro 2016 group campaign with a clash against outsiders Albania on Saturday June 11 at 2pm before squaring up to Romania (June 15 at 5pm) and hosts France, on June 19 at 8pm.

Road to Qualification

The Swiss finished as Group E runners-up behind England, winning five and losing three of their eight fixtures. Although Petkovic’s side scored 24 times, 11 of those were in two clashes against San Marino – indeed, they failed to score in any of the three matches (twice against England, once against Slovenia) that they tasted defeat.

At the back, they managed five clean sheets, though conceded twice in each of that trio of losses, which suggests they may find it a tad more difficult at both ends of the pitch against better quality opponents.

Switzerland have played five friendlies over the last 12 months. They won 3-0 against Liechtenstein in June 2015 but have since lost three of the following four, with a 2-1 triumph over Austria in the middle of losses to Slovakia (2-3), Republic of Ireland (0-1) and Bosnia (0-2).

Most Appearances Xherdan Shaqiri, Josip Drmic (9), Johan Djourou, Gokhan Inler, Stephan Lichsteiner, Ricardo Rodriguez, Yann Sommer, Granit Xhaka, Haris Seferovic, Ahmed Mehmedi (8), Valon Behrami, Blerim Dzemaili (7), Fabian Schar (6)

Most goals Xherdan Shaqiri (4), Josip Drmic, Haris Seferovic (3), Fabian Schar (2)

Most assists Xherdan Shaqiri (5), Breel Embolo (3), Josip Drmic (2)

The Key Targets

Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri made the most convincing case for consideration over the qualifiers. Likely to be stationed on the right of a 4-2-3-1 by Petkovic, the Potters’ playmaker started more matches than any Swiss player and also leads the way for goals and assists, with four and five respectively. Delving into the underlying data, Shaqiri sat first and second in the Swiss squad for key passes and efforts on goal respectively, though is priced at a steep 8.0 in the Uefa game and, somewhat frustratingly, classified as a forward. Shaqiri’s crosses from out wide will heighten his Draft Kings appeal, whilst he also has a share of corner kick and dead-ball duties. Indeed, the Swiss scored more goals (seven) from corners than any side during qualifying.

Granit Xhaka (7.0 in Uefa) is expected to line up in the attacking midfield three positions alongside Shaqiri. The new Arsenal signing offers a threat from long-range but failed to find the net over qualifying – Xhaka may be better suited to Draft Kings, where his tackles and interceptions will pick up the points.

At the back, that 50% clean sheet record in the qualifiers isn’t overly convincing, though Ricardo Rodriguez could more than atone for that lack of resilience. Granted, he’s the priciest defender in the Swiss squad at 6.0 but the left-back boasts a significant goal threat and provides a steady source of crosses from out wide. The Wolfsburg man – who bagged two goals and three assists in the Bundesliga in 2015/16 – also shares dead-ball duties with Shaqiri.

Up top, Haris Seferovic started seven matches over the qualifiers and is favourite to lead the line with Josip Drmic ruled out after undergoing knee surgery. Although he’s failed to impress domestically and scored just three times in last year’s Bundesliga, Seferovic – priced at 6.5 in the Uefa game – produced more attempts than any team-mate in qualifying and found the net on three occasions.

The Long Shots

Johan Djourou may appeal to those on the lookout for a budget defender (5.0) in the Uefa game. The former Arsenal man started eight matches at centre-half and should pick up Draft Kings points for successful tackles and interceptions, though mustered a mere two attempts over the qualifiers.

Elsewhere in defence, Juventus’ Stephan Lichstiener (5.5) offers a similar security of starts as fellow full-back Rodriguez but offers little attacking potential down the right. Fabian Schar isn’t quite so nailed-on at centre-half but, at 5.5, has an excellent scoring record at international level – the Hoffenheim man has netted five times in 19 appearances for the Swiss senior side, including two strikes during the qualifiers.

Admir Mehmedi (6.0, classified as a forward in Uefa) is likely to take up the left flank role in a 4-2-3-1 but could be benched if Petkovic opts for Valon Behrami (6.0 in Uefa) on the flank in a 4-4-2. The latter offers minimal goal threat, though his defensive stats could be handy in Draft Kings – he’s top for successful tackles and joint-second when it comes to interceptions.

Upcoming Friendlies

Switzerland vs Belgium (May 28), Switzerland vs Moldova (June 3)

There's no way that Ibrahimovic is going to come in at 9.5.. Didn't Costa come in at 10.5 1st season?

      I'd predict 11

    Ozil - Perisic - Calhanoglu - Alaba - Grosicki
    Muller - Milik - Janko

    What do ye think?

    Other considerations:

    - Expensive mid -- Reus / Hazard / KdB / Pogba / Siggy
(would require downgrading Calhanoglu/Perisic to a 6m probably, or else going without Spanish defence)

    - Expensive striker -- Lewa / Ronnie / Giroud
    (same downgrades needed as above)

        • 8 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Milik got 6 goals and 6 assists in the qualifiers and you can make plenty of strong arguments to support his inclusion in the team instead of Lewandowski. Check out last page if interested.

Mueller/Ozil and Hakan, isn't that enough for explosive options?

2 of those goals coming against gibraltor and i imagine a few assists too. Muller maybe, ozil not explosive although i do have him in as he is a guaranteed point scorer. Not so sure about Hakan, wouldn't say explosive

Sapunaru isn't nailed and Alabania start with 2 tough-ish fixtures. Consider a Croatian defender maybe?

I would downgrade Grosicki and upgrade one of Milik/Janko to Giroud/Lewa personally . Have you considered Rafa Silva as a potential 5th mid?

      1. Irish Madridista ⭐
        • 13 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

Sapunaru plays for Romania who only conceded twice in qualifying, he's not nailed but it's an easy downgrade to Matel(4.0) if he replaces him.

Really don't want a 4.5m midfielder, it just reeks of Shane Ferguson tactics, killing off a spot in the team, which will hurt when subs come into play.

          • 9 Years

Oops , meant Romania ! Fair enough but point still stands.

Have you researched up on Rafa Silva? He is a winger and has had a very good season for Bragga. I think he is a very good sub to have.

Fair enough, Croatia have some tough fixtures too though and Vrsajlko isn't 100% nailed either.

I haven't looked deep enough into R.Silva's prospects, I'll check him out. Cheers EH 🙂 I'm a bit wary of Portugal under a defensive manager, but he could be a good shout if he's likely to play.

    A few thoughts on mourinho...

He seems very relaxed in that interview, like a very different person to the one we were seeing last year.
He mentions that the players need to listen & his relationship with the players is the most important thing , clarifying to the public that he lost the players at Chelsea and has learnt from that.
He said a few years ago that he wanted to settle with Chelsea long term, 10 years If memory serves and create a legacy. With united I think he has that opportunity.
Worrying times for non-united fans but also exciting for the purists.
Good luck to him I say, not that he will need it.

Fair enough, I'm not knocking him, just wondering the reason behind it, like why you haven't gone for Reus / KdB / Pogba / Ozil / Martial etc instead?

I have Alli, Reus, and Hazard as my mids.

I have Griezmann, not interested in another French player.
Hazard Vs KDB is the real debate for me, also finding another 0.5m is tough as I am playing 5-2-3 formation.

Spot on with the defence , waiting to see what comes along over next 10 days.sorted team out on a 35 35 30 million spilt front 7 chosen purely on qualifying performance which indicates to me they're efficiency as creators/scores in the unit. Hazard in particular went on an unbelievable scoring run with Belgium, let's leave Chelsea's season behind? Like he wants to!

Interesting 🙂 Cheers LWM, will look into Hazard's more recent form. Worth noting that I think Reus was 4th overall for attempts on target with very few games played, so there are other options banding about, but yeah I should stop writing Hazard off in my own mind.

    Hi please rate my team.

    Patricio / Sommer
    Hector Alba Kosc Dragovic
    Fab Ozil Grosiki
    Kane Muller Giroud

    Rafa S Perisic Denayer

Other option i was on was:

    Denayer - Schar
    Kane - Janko

Off on holiday so looking to finish up before I go 🙂

Looks very good. Tough choice between Denayer + Kane and Schar + Janko but I think I'd stick with what you have. Sommer there for Switzerland coverage.

Personally I'd go Alaba over Fabregas but Cesc could end up being a great pick.

If he plays, he'll be cheaper and playing centrally with Griezmann out wide for an extra 1.5m. Plus I don't think Griezmann has scored as prolifically for France as he has for Atletico but I maaay be wrong there.

I agree, but Benzema has always been the first pick for France and Giroud hasn't played much with this team as Griezmann has, The pressure of becoming the main striker can hinder his performance.

      EUROS - Round 1(Sixth Draft, 0.0):

      Schär[ALB], Vrsaljko[TUR], Măţel[FRA]
      Perisic[TUR](c?), Sigurdsson[POR]{sp}(c?), Grosicky[NIR]{sp}(c?), Mak[WAL]{sp}(c?)
      Müller[UKR]{p}, Lewandowski[NIR]{sp}(c?), Janko[HUN]

      Almer[HUN]; Alaba[HUN]{sp}(c?), Jordi Alba[CZE](c?), Kadlec[SPA]

      [Opponents]{sp = set pieces}{p = penalties} (c = captaincy option)

      Reserves:

      Glik 5.0 [NIR, GER]
Ahmet Çalık 4.0 [CRO, ESP, CZE]
      Lindelöf 4.0 [ROI, ITA, BEL,]

Just saw some comments mentioning Perisic "poor season".
As an Inter fan, I think he was poor in the first half of the season because he was played OOP, but in the last three months when he was brought back to play as a LW he did really well and was our best player imo, and that is the same position he plays for Croatia.

I know club form usually doesn't affect NT form but thought this might be helpful for some.

I don't usually post a rate my team on this site but I expect it will change quite a bit by the time the tournament starts. So I'm going a bit against the template right now - particularly heavily with midfield bias...let me know what you think so I can disregard any adverse comments!!!

    Somner/Patricio
    Sagna/Koscielny/Lichsteiner/Carvahal/Fuchs
    Alaba/Alli/Grosicki/Reus/Iniesta
    Kane/Vardy/Giroud

My thinking...England will let in goals but probably score quiet a few..
France defence will be good - fixtures are good
Swiss double up on defence - fixtures are good
Attacking midfield - and Poland opening fixture v NI is good so Grosicki for matchday 1 seems reasonable

Wanted Muller and will probably bring him in somehow. May swap Lichsteiner as there are probably better 5.5m options

How likely to play is this Rafa Silva for Portugal?

I agree he could be a great option at 4.5mil but as Portugal play last in GW1 & GW2 I don't want to be gambling on bringing him in for someone with a couple of points if he's not guaranteed to play

Solid. One thing to keep an eye on, it's very possible that Giaccherini could start in midfield for Italy. He's listed as a 5.0 defender so if he does nail down that spot I'd take a punt on him over Bonucci. That would also give you 0.5 to upgrade Hazard to De Bruyne.
