The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Hi all, novice player so i'd love to hear your thoughts on my team below:
    GK: Heaton Gomes
DEF: Alderweireld Robertson Friend Stones Fernandez
MID: Gudmundsson Mahrez Ayew Feghouli Alli
    FWD: Ibrahimovic Kane Gray

I've tried to keep it balanced (except the FWD's which is the biggest investment) and tried to look at as much pre season form as I can get my hands on - its a little hard in Oz though!

    Thanks all

Well Watfort have a very tough start so would replace Gomes is goals, perhaps with Foster who rotates well with Heaton at the start plus you would save .5 iirc which you could then use to upgrade feghouli perhaps. The major thing to notice about your team is the lack of Aguero which will theoretically allow you extra big hitters elsewhere. If you get them right it could be inspired, if you get them wrong not having Aguero could really hurt you. Food for thought anyway

Who is holding? I think the cheaper mids could be upgraded...not sure Dier or Xhaka will contribute much.

    My first draft so far:

    De Gea | Hennessey
Shaw | Fuchs | Van Aanholt | Friend | Hernandez
Mkhitaryan | Mahrez | Dier | Sigurdsson | De Roon
    Lukaku | Agüero | Long

Any thoughts/replies/suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure about double Utd defence given the fixtures. No question they'll be good value during a kinder spell though.

Again, I'd look to upgrade Dier (and De Roon)

Agree, Dier in defence was a definite, in mid his points will slump

    Hello guys,

What do you all think to the following? Unsure whether to downgrade De Gea and with an extra million upgrade Townsend to Ayew....

    De Gea

    Shaw
    Alderweild
    Walker

    Alli
    Mahrez
    Townsend
    Payet

    Negredo
    Aguero
    Gray

    Subs: Fletcher, Smith, Pickford, Paredes

I'd make that move perhaps...if going with a 'keeper with better fixtures. Valdes might be just the ticket.

Rumours of Williams to Everton but it's a straight swap from F. Mori to Ashley.

I don't know much about Fischer tbh...worth his spot?

Looks like he'll play no10 for Mboro who are decent and have good fixtures, any opinions about the defence? Got Williams now, but obviously got very limited funds!

Ahh. Well they have the fixtures, that's for sure.

I still think it's a bit light...but you might be able to get Amat for 4.0 if Williams moves and then swap Fernandez out for another 4.5...Kone might fit the bill.

Used this site last season as a viewer but signed up this year as was really helpful. Please let me know what you think on my team below?

    GK:
    Butland, Pickford

    DEF:
    Azp, Coleman, Stones, Shaw, Friend

    MID:
    Firmino, Ibe, Mkhit, Kante, Clayton

    STR:

    Thanks,

I think there are better options than Kante for the price...you need someone with attacking threat. Who is Clayton? Just a filler I guess...

Overall it looks like it could do well though.

Thanks a lot. I've switched out Kante now & Mkhi to bring in Hazard. Clayton is a filler but think he plays all the time for Boro.

    Valdez (Jaku)
    Gabriel, Williams, Friend (Byram, Paredes)
    Hazard, Mikh, Ayew, Fischer (Routledge)
    Zlatan, Kun, Gray

    0 itb

Thinking Gabriel will play until the Euro players get fully fit
Byram to step in should Williams not be ready, although ugly opener

Is flexible enough to transfer in any priced player who plays a blinder in GW1 (KDB, Mahrez, Batsu etc)

    Thoughts?

Trying to decide between 3 very similar but slightly different teams. Any suggestions and feedback greatly appreciated!

Keepers are Foster/Jaku for all 3
May want to trade Terry for another 5.5 (open to suggestions)
Defense a bit light but ok with me
Option C would allow a Hazard/sanchez swap if sanchez becomes a must- have later on, but no TOT coverage
    Leaning towards A or C

    A.
    Valencia/terry/friend/pieters/wasilewski
    Mahrez/eriksen/deulofeu/townsend/routledge
    Kun/ibra/gray
    0.5m itb

    B.
    Valencia/terry/friend/pieters/wasilewski
    Mahrez/mkhi/deulofeu/townsend/routledge
    Kun/kane/gray
    0.0m itb

    C.
    Valencia/4.5/friend/pieters/wasilewski
    Mahrez/haz/deulofeu/townsend/routledge
    Kun/ibra/gray
    0.0m itb

I would suggest shaving some money off of your gk/def/mids to get a harder hitter up top. Otherwise, if Kun or Ibra (or both) start firing, you'll be scrambling to find a way to get one of them into your squad

Roo is a head-scratcher for me. It feels almost like making last season's mistakes all over again starting with him (and Hazard). Either or both could be fantasy gold though.

could be = wait and see. Still lots of unanswered q's around united's attack, feel that Rooney could be at risk if he doesn't perform GW1/2

    Advice appreciated

    Butland (Schmeichel)
    Shaw/Ivanovic/Williams (McAuley/Paredes)
    Ibe/Ozil/KDB/mkhitaryan (Kouyate)
    Gray/Zatlan/Long

thinking of switching KDB/mkhitaryan/Ozil & Zlat for
    Hazard/martial/eriksen & kun

      You need Kun

You don't necessarily need Kun. It's brave to go without, even in the short-term, but since Sunderland & Stoke away are bogey teams for City, it may just pay off.

Aye, thinking longer term it would be difficult to put him in later though

Aye, that's the problem. Starting with Vardy and money ITB is an option but I hate to plan for transfers like that.

    Hello Guys

    What's your thoughts on this?

    De Gea

    Koscielny
    Walker
    Shaw

    Tadic
    Payet
    Mahrez
    Eriksen

    Aguero
    Long
    GrY

Subs: Parades, Fletcher, B Smith, Jaku

    Appreciate any feedback!

you don't need DDG and Shaw.
      Payet uncertain to start GW1+2
      2 x £6.5 forwards is risky
      No United attack
      Your bench is awful!

Downgrade DDG > 2 x better bench options IMO

I worry slightly about Walker. If he's nailed he's a great option though. I wouldn't feel safe with that cheap bench personally but the starting XI looks very healthy as a result.

Oh I agree with Chris about the Utd double up tbh. And yeah, maybe start with Mikhy/Martial over Payet then...I'd want Payet in eventually though.

Course he's nailed! Threat going forward and should earn more bp's this year. Great price too compared to other Spurs def

Spurs seem to have decent cover for him, that's all. He did play a good amount of minutes last season tbf.

don't think Poch trusts Tripper in PL. Walker may be rotated once or twice, but nailed as nailed can be in Spurs def.

I'm not sure he is nailed, may be used in CL game/rotated with tripp

Advice appreciated to improve team. £3 million left in bank. Also only keeping lukaku in my team providing he stays at Everton otherwise ill take him out.
    GK- De Gea (Valdes)

DEF- Shaw, Morgan, Sagna (McAuley, Van Dijk)

MID- Mkhitaryan, Lamela, Hazard, Deulofeu (Redmond)

    STR- Lukaku, Austin, Negrado

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No need for Shaw & DDG
Sagna worries me, better £5.5 options IMO (Walker/Terry/Baines)
      Not sold on Deulofeu
Lukaku risky IMO. Not happy at EVE, rotation risk at CHE.

Personally I'd downgrade Shaw for a £4.5 and use the £4m to get Kun

Not sure how nailed Sagna is & I'd go with Long over Austin.
Not so sure about the Everton double so would switch Deulofeu to a 9.5m MID - Payet or Mahrez

    Foster/(Jaku)
    Shaw/Funes Mori/Friend/Soare/4M
    Hazard/Eriksen/Ayew/Deulofeu/(Capoue)
    Kun/Ibra/Gray

    I'm torn between the following:
    Eriksen+Ayew+Funes
    Mahrez+Townsend+Funes
    Tadic + Ayew + Azpilicueta

Really like this. *maybe* Eriksen > Lamela to get better bench options/upgrade Deulo, but I'm nit-picking! Oh, and not 100% on Shaw. Baines/Walker/Terry more of a threat.

Getting there... What do you guys think?

    Heaton.
    Shaw, Morgan, Friend.
    Ibe, Hazard, Mkhitaryan, Townsend.
    Gray, Aguero (c), Ibrahimovic

    Subs: Foster, Capoue, McAuley, Fernandez.

Any suggestions will be helpful. Cheers.

Ok, can anyone pick a hole in this team
    Forster (Jaku)
Friend Walker Cedric ( Pva Cambers)
    eriksen ayew fab deulefeo (fischer)
    Kun Ibra Long

Think this should be a decent team question mark over fabregas maybe, usually high priced midfield tend to be slow starters

OK. Third draft - I think it's getting better

    GK- Heaton, Forster (rotating)

DEF- Shaw, Terry, Valencia, (Lenihan, Paredes - both probably perma-benched)

MID- Hazard, Walcott, Ayew plus one of Routledge/Puncheon - probably rotating)

STR- Kun, Zlatan, plus a 6.5 (can't decide on one yet)

In early weeks likely that Walcott, Ayew & Hazard will be played in advanced roles.

Is it Austin, Gray, Carroll or just hope tekkers to Palace goest through?

    Thoughts and/or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Not bad, good balance considering how top heavy it is.

I'd be tempted baines to Williams
