Scout Report – Granit Xhaka

After failing to splash the cash on a single outfield player last season, Arsenal were quick out the blocks in late May with the acquisition of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The midfielder arrives at the Emirates on a long-term contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £35 million and, having been afforded an extended break due to his Euro 2016 exertions with Switzerland, joined in full training last week.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger explained the reasons behind snapping up the new boy:

“[Xhaka brings] his passing ability to play through the lines from deep positions, his work rate, and he’s good in the air. He’s a young boy as well, 23 years old. There’s a lot to come from him. We lost three midfielders: Flamini, Rosicky and Arteta, and numbers-wise we are quite solid in midfield now. Elneny had a big impact when he came here, Coquelin was injured for a long time and is back. Cazorla will come back, Wilshere is back… so we are solid in midfield.”

After completing his move, the 23-yeard-old – who had a habit of incurring the wrath of Bundesliga referees – hopes his all-action style of play will be more suited to the English top-flight:

“I remember I was young and the first game I watched was in the Premier League. It’s a big dream for me and now that I’m here I am very, very happy. I like the style of football in the Premier League. It’s aggressive and I like the way Arsenal play football. It’s not like other countries but it’s very nice here. In Germany you can play aggressively but the referee will always blow his whistle, but in England that’s not the case. That’s better for me. I like to play football. I’m an aggressive player and also a leader. I’m only 23 but I captained a good team in Germany.”

The History

A product of the Basel youth system in his native Switzerland, Xhaka made his first-team debut in 2010/11. Over the course of a couple of seasons, the midfielder produced two goals and four assists in 44 league outings, helping his side collect back-to-back league titles before sealing a move to MGladbach in May 2012.

Xhaka spend four years in Germany, delivering six goals and three assists over 108 league outings. He’s also played a total of 37 matches in Europe for the Bundesliga side and fared a little better in the final third, serving up four goals and a trio of assists.

In terms of discipline, Xhaka’s combative style of play earned ten yellows and a red card in 2013/14 and 2014/15, whilst he was booked five times and sent off on three occasions last season.

On the international stage, the Arsenal new boy served up eight goals in 43 appearances at youth level for Switzerland. He’s since turned out 44 times for the senior side and found the net on six occasions.

The Prospects

Given the hefty outlay, you’d expect the new boy is earmarked for a regular role in the Gunners’ double-pivot in 2016/17.

Xhaka’s excellent distribution and ability to orchestrate play from deep were very much in evidence over Euro 2016 – the playmaker was second only to Germany’s Toni Kroos in the centre of the park for both touches and passes over the first four rounds of fixtures as Switzerland lost to Poland in the Round of 16.

Looking at the underlying numbers from last season, though, Xhaka offered little in terms of attacking threat for Borussia, with a shot every 71.8 minutes and key pass every 107.6 minutes. It’s fair to say that, unless he’s handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, Xhaka’s impact in the final third looks somewhat limited.

Crucially for the north London outfit, Xhaka will add a real physical presence in the centre of the park.

His total of 67 successful tackles was more than any Arsenal midfielder last term, whilst 76 interceptions is level with Francis Coquelin, who was joint-top for Wenger’s midfielders in 2015/16. The new boy’s ability in the air also stands out. Xhaka won 94 aerial duels last term – again, that’s more than any of his new midfield team-mates.

With Xhaka set to be installed to the starting XI, Wenger has a real dilemma on his hands in the centre of the park, with Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Mohamed Elneny also vying for minutes.

The likes of Cazorla, Ramsey and Wilshere could potentially be afforded a role in the attacking midfield three slots, though again, the competition is fierce.

With Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil nailed on, the aforementioned trio would battle it out with Alex Iwobi, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joel Campbell and (when fit) Danny Welbeck. Given that Sanchez and Ozil cost 11.0 and 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), we’ll be hoping that a cheaper player can emerge to offer strong value alongside them in Wenger’s attack.

Despite of his lack of attacking output, the 5.5-priced Xhaka has so far been snapped up by over 6% of FPL managers – the fifth most-owned at 5.5 and under. Given that his acquisition would take up one of our three available slots for Arsenal players, though, that popularity seems a little questionable.

Despite a tough couple of opening clashes against Liverpool and Leicester, Arsenal are ranked as having the third most favourable schedule over the first 10 Gameweeks, with clashes against Watford, Hull, Burnley, Swansea, Middlesbrough and Sunderland on their agenda.

Xhaka’s addition in front of the back-four suggests the Gunners will again be amongst the more resilient sides on offer, having finished joint-top with united for clean sheets last term on 18 apiece. This, in turn, should bode well for the prospects of Hector Bellerin, Laurent Koscielny and company. next time around as Wenger looks to improve upon last term’s second-placed finish.

i have nothing against a three man west brom defence (thou mind you with mcualy's age and evans hammy i doubt you will have three of them at all times), but i do mind the haz and fab combo - too much IMO.

Post to all managers here who are non-members.

As there is Mini League for FFS members only I think that ML for FFS non-members is interesting idea.
There are some flaws but could be fun to compete with all managers here but with no access to those secret informations/statistics etc. and that's why open FFS ML is a bit unequal imo.
Even if someone decide to buy membership during the game or some member will join the league well that's not a disaster but I hope for your honesty guys. If you are a member please don't join. Hope that members would abide by the honour code and stay clear.
You have open ML and member ML so don't ruin our fun.
(Maybe I will check all managers who join this league by asking to mail me their FFS profile name and maybe check the top managers after every few games and see if they're also in the FFS Members League etc.)

I know that some people are not afford to get membership or don't want to get it by choice (want to use only informations that they can get on their own etc.) and FFS non members are also community of this site and we have right to do it 😉 so I think that members should respect that and let us play our own ML.

Code to join FFS non-members NO PRIZE league: 4586-92193

I will post this few more times to more managers here can read it.
I would appreciate if moderator could hulk this post and put it in hot topic. Thank you if you can help me to reach more non members here.

    NOTICE
I know that this sounds stupid (very stupid to me) but need to say that I don't encouraging people not to get membership or resign just to enter this league 🙂
Membership gives you a lot of useful informations that u can use in your MLs etc. You also support the site and all people who work hard to make this site so good. I also encourage all to GET the membership because of many reasons just to mention ones above. Even if non member join this league and decide later that want to became a member that’s very good. Just let me know, leave the league and join FFS members ML one.

Reckon I've nailed starting team for the year, any thoughts on this set up?
    Heaton Foster
    Baines Shaw Friend Pieters Smith
    KDB Firmino Ayew Hazard Leko
    Berahino Aguero Long

Could see Austin in for Long but otherwise pretty set. Looks like Smith should be turning out for Bournemouth rather than sitting on the Liverpool bench and Berahino will be value anywhere he goes.
Easy to downgrade a big hitter mid to jump on any valuable bandwagons thus no ManU for season start.

You risk to have big troubles if events force you to squeeze in a second big hitters in attack (i.e. if Ibra start to score a lot).

Cheers, I figure Hazard is a luxury that can be downgraded to boost attack. Ibra may be a stretch though.

Is Smith likely to start over Francis?

Decent squad though, you mention the risks, maybe KDB > Micki for a bit more balance to kick off with?

May well go that way, certainly frees up some cash for defence or attack upgrade. Figured Smith might start for namesake at Bournemouth given Francis is captain and they're paying good price for him. Do have surprising depth at fullback with Mings and Ake, perhaps strange transfer....

Would be grateful for any help...

Situation is, I was late handing out prizes for my league last year and then later still as I waited while the FPL site was entirely updated. Is there any why I can view the league as it finished last year? I've managed to "renew" the league, but can't find a 'history' section or equivalent. Anyone have any idea how I can recover the league, or at very least the names of the entrants so I can email everyone?

    Thanks

Weird one. At 7.5M, you either have to leave some $$ in the bank to upgrade him or have a similar priced [or lower priced] MID in mind to transfer in for him. That and the fixtures he 'might' start are not exactly enticing.

Has anyone had a play with the new RMT yet in the members area? Have to admit it's one of my favourite tools and I found it really helpful last year... any of you non-members really should sign up, it's well worth it! 🙂

I'm focusing on the first 3 weeks as will very likely wildcard over the international break.
So far my team has a score of 164.86 for those first 3 weeks. Can anyone better this please and if so care to give me any pointers?

    Thanks

I haven't looked at the team which would get maximum for 3 game weeks but it's not hard to work. Sounds like you are close. If only there was a guarantee you'd be top 100K with it.

        Haha, indeed! 🙂
It would be great at the start of the season and when playing wildcards if you could put your budget in (as it changes over the season) and select the number of GW's you want to focus on, then have it auto pick the best team based on the stats it uses and your budget.
You obviously wouldn't want to go with it straight off, but it'd give you a great idea of what's available and might bring in a few players you hadn't thought of or a different balance from your team.

You can pick GW3 as the last GW and work out the RMT essentials. Just need to work out maximizing the odd tough week with some who rotates well.

Yes, I have done this. Still a bit tricky to work out the very best combination of players to meet your budget (unless I'm missing something)
Ideally you'd want it to do this for you... or at least suggest what it thinks is the most optimum 15 over a certain number of GW's.

        Foster (Jaku)
        Azpi, Shaw, Friend (Williams, Wilson)
        Mahrez, Ayew, Mkhitaryan, Townsend (Leko)
        Aguero, Lukaku, Rondon

...there are a couple of obvious improvements I could make - I have 0.5m ITB so could upgrade Mark Wilson, but I always like to have a 4.0 fodder Def as I'm happy to use just 4 players for 3 positions most of the season and rarely start 4 or 5 in Def.

It also thinks de Roon will score the most out of the 4.5m Mids over the first 3, but I'm happy with Leko and his form.

You talking about FoRster and he's talking about Foster. It's easy to confuse those two since their name is almost the same. 🙂

      1) Foster has great fixtures, I'd play him every week
      2) Adrian at £5.0m is awful imo considering the options at 4.5
      3) 9.5m is too much for keepers imo

Not if Cresswell is injured. That West Ham-defence is already quite shaky as it is, you can't really tell which game they will finish with a CS.

Has anybody input their team into the RMT tool in the members area?

Just wondering what sort of projected points for the first six weeks your teams were getting.

My team's projected points for the first six weeks is 311 but i've no idea whether thats good, bad or indifferent.

      Good.

But then RMT probably had Hazard, Costa, Rooney et al as the highest projected scorers last season. Its a novelty, nothing else.

I got 315. But before the first gameweeks the RMT tool is not so precise. I find it the most useful to test defensive rotations. And to identify some interesting players that I didn't think to by myself.

If you want to see whether that's because of doubts over playing time go to the projections and see how many minutes Deulofeu has been projected. Sometimes players who are high rotation risks will be projected lower points but may add more value to your team so don't just judge the player by their points but also by how much they increase the weekly team projected points, if that makes sense?

    3-4-3 formo

Im now at, and yes no Aguero - sorry to all those that like to see his name lol

    Foster / Heaton
Baines, Williams. Shaw (Nsue or another MID defender & Pieters)
    Ayew, KDB, Fab, Firmino (Holjbjerg)
Negredo, Giroud (was Benteke but unless he moves to palace), Ibra

What you think are the major issues in this team?

    Heaton - Foster
    Azpi - Shaw - Friend - Evans - Koné
    Martial - Eriksen - Barkley - Ayew - Capoué
    Aguero - Lukaku - Long

I have some doubts mainly on Martial-Eriksen, thinking about changing it into DeBruyne-Lamela.

Not sure that they will score much less points, and KdB gives me the possibility to switch rapidly to Sanchez if necessary.

If the forward situation of Chelsea become more clear I may consider Diego Costa instead than Lukaku and a 5.5 instead than Azpi.

The squad is rather rigid. If another forward big hitter (other than Aguero) start to fire (i.e. Ibra) you will have huge problems.

Best 5.5m defender for GW1 and GW3 only?

    A) Fuchs (hul, SWA)
    B) Dann (WBA, MID)
    C) VVD (WAT, SUN)
    D) Sagna (SUN, WHU)
    E) Terry (WHU, BUR)

Fuchs smashes the baps, and I see two cleanies there, so edging that way...
