Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-Up

Gerard Deulofeu notches once again as Everton are defeated in Dresden. Bournemouth new boy Lewis Cook opens his account, whilst Tottenham slip to defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Dynamo Dresden 2 Everton 1

Gerard Deulofeu’s third goal in as many pre-season matches was the only real highlight of a Dresden encounter in which events off the field were arguably of greater interest.

The young Spaniard scored from a free-kick he earned himself and again looked lively in a side otherwise lacking a cutting edge that struggled to play the high-tempo, quick-passing game that new coach Ronald Koeman demands.

Centre-half John Stones played the majority of the match amid news that his proposed move to Manchester City had stalled over the asking price for the England international, while striker Romelu Lukaku was an unused sub as rumour surfaced of a bid from his former club Chelsea.

One player looking likely to bolster Koeman’s squad is Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye. The Villa boss Roberto di Matteo conceded:

“It’s public Everton have triggered his clause and he’s going to leave. There’s no news so far but the expectation is, once personal terms are agreed and a medical [is done], he’s going to go. There are other clubs interested, that’s right, but the only official bid so far has been from Everton.”

Maarten Stekelenburg again started in goal ahead of Joel Robles, while Deulofeu continues to shine in a “false nine” role he has been asked to fill out of necessity.

With Lukaku’s future still uncertain and Arouna Kone recovering from a knee injury, Koeman took time to praise the in-form youngster, who, despite a kind 6.5 price tag, is still owned by just 3% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game:

“We have some good players who can score from a free-kick. It was Kevin Mirallas against Barnsley and today we saw the quality of Gerard. You can win matches with set plays so it is good to see. Gerard had some good opportunities, he worked hard and had good movement. Maybe he had to score one of the two big chances he had in the second half. But he is dangerous out of that position and that is good to see because we need that pace.”

Everton XI: Stekelenburg, Coleman, Stones (Holgate 69), Funes Mori, Baines, Davies (Besic 46), Gibson, Lennon, Barkley (Dowell 69), Mirallas, Deulofeu.

Tottenham 0 Atletico Madrid 1

Christian Eriksen’s return from illness wasn’t enough to prevent Spurs from slipping to a second straight defeat yesterday morning.

The Dane was joined by Erik Lamela and Josh Onomah in the attacking midfield roles behind summer signing Vincent Janssen, whilst fellow new boy Victor Wanyama was afforded another start in central midfield.

Both Lamela – who scored against Juventus in midweek – and Onomah rattled the woodwork but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were unable to find a way past the Champions League runners-up, with Atletico keeper Jan Oblak earning the man of the match accolade.

The Spurs boss was again without his Euro 2016 contingent and relied on a number of youngsters as he rang the changes over the second period. At the back, Kevin Wimmer missed out once more with a minor hamstring problem.

Spurs XI: Vorm (McGee 75); Trippier (Walker-Peters 60), Walkes, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin (Miller 60); Wanyama (Mason 46), Winks (Ball 75); Lamela (Son 46), Eriksen (Carroll 46), Onomah (Chadli 60); Janssen (Edwards 75).

Reading 1 Bournemouth 1

Summer signing Lewis Cook opened his Bournemouth account as his new side completed the first part of a pre-season double header.

The former Leeds star scored eight minutes before half-time, but their Championship opponents fought back after the break, exposing a Cherries backline missing a number of key personnel.

Howe was forced to use winger Marc Pugh at right-back to cover for his lack of options at the back, and having conceded three goals in their previous run-out at Portsmouth, his team’s defensive fragility remains a worry with the Premier League opener now just a fortnight away.

Nathan Ake was given his first start, playing on the left-hand side of central defence alongside captain Simon Francis, and Max Gradel returned in midfield following a one-match suspension.

After the match, Eddie Howe was optimistic that the injury situation in defence will clear up before their season opener against Man United two weeks’ tomorrow:

“Having two games to get teams together for this weekend is difficult. You need eight defenders and we don’t have that at the moment. But we are confident we will have enough by the time the season starts, whether that means we will have to recruit or that we will have people back fit, we will have to wait and see.”

The relevance of Howe’s team selections has to be tempered by the fact that Bournemouth are in action again today, at home to Cardiff City.

Nonetheless, the Cherries boss was certainly pleased with the performance of his new signings:

“Lewis took his goal very well and it was a really energetic performance from him.Nathan also looked very comfortable at centre back, so that was very pleasing to see and a good sign for us. I think this is the squad with the most potential that I’ve ever had. They have to prove now that they are the best squad, and that will come with the results and performances ahead of us.”

Bournemouth XI: Boruc, MacDonald, Francis, Ake, Daniels, Gosling, Cook, Gradel, Pugh, King, Wilson (Mousset 62).

    Myhill (Konstantopolopolopolopolopolis)
    Dann, Moreno, Sagna (McAuley, Oxford)
    Alli, Coutinho, Deulofeu, Sigurdsson (Bolasie)
    Aguero, Vardy, Gray

    - Obviously need to monitor Sagna closely and that City defence because if Kolorov starts getting 90 minutes, he is definitely worth investment!
    - Coutinho looks on fire in pre-season, despite people's attention being drawn to Firminho.

Anything else to keep in mind? GKs?

Don't udnerstand Mkhi interest personally, his influence was great in Germany but his stats weren't. Much better options at that money I'd say.

Also can't see Mahrez having another season like last, 2nd season syndrome happens to many wingers. But other than those two areas, can't see much to improve.

    • 13 Years

Just back from Loftus Road so, while still fresh in my mind here's a scouting report on Watford.

The team is most definitely committed to the 3-5-2. The back three in the first half was from L to R Britos, Cathcart and Nyom with Holebas and Anya flanking them. To say they weren't good is an understatement. Even before QPR deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes they had already created three clear cut chances missing - the target each time - and then hit the bar. Huge spaces between the wingbacks and both of the outside CB's was exploited time and time again. There was also a clear disconnect between the midfielders (L to R Capoue, Suarez and Doucoure) and defence. With good finishing the R's could have been 5 up at HT and Watford couldn't have complained too much!!

Anya (reverse OOP) and Holebas both got in a few different crosses but mostly were on the back foot. Britos and Nyom both made numerous mistakes and Cathart struggled with the size of Polter and got turned around for the goal.

HT saw a reshuffle at the back with Nyom going off for Kabasele at RCB and Amrabat on for Anya at RWB. 15 minutes later Prodl came on for Britos going straight into the middle with Cathart shifting to LCB.

I'd be surprised if they aren't the starting CB trio as they looked much better than any other combination tried.

For 30 minutes after HT I got excited from an FPL perspective as Zuniga came on for the invisible Doucoure and played RM. Watford then improved immediately down the right with Amrabat in particular looking very impressive. However, when Holebas went off after 75 minutes Zuniga switched to left wing back and the game immediately petered out.

I know a number of you are hoping that Capoue will be your cheap 4.5 midfielder but based on this showing I'd look elsewhere. He isn't on all corners (he took them from the right, Holebas from the left) and while he has some licence to go further forward with the exception of one shot which flew past the right hand post he did very little. The oft talked about responsibility for free kicks didn't materialise, though in truth Watford didn't have any in shooting positions and played all the other one's short.

The understanding between Deeney and Ighalo was obvious but neither looked that sharp, with Ighalo wasting one good chance and failing to convert an even easier one from 6 yards out.

Best player for Watford on the day was Amrabat but as a reverse OOP defender his appeal from an FPL perspective is non-existent.

I was on my way to Heathrow when this game was on so found out the result as we were standing in queue to check in.

Happy for my club, a good preseason at long last, but I wouldn't read too much into the result. Watford are essentially a week behind QPR in terms of preparation and match fitness.

Capoue should be a decent £4.5m option once the real games begin.

On a side note, glad to see Washington finally get off the mark for QPR. Hopefully they'll start coming for him on a regular basis. I heard Polter was a real handful for the Watford defence.

Fair enough. I haven't taken a too good look at the fixtures (or anything else) yet, just somehow recalled that West Ham doesn't have too bad first 10 or so, and think that Ayew upfront for Hammers is worth twice the Ayew upfront for Swans.

You obviously still haven't read her reply from earlier. Let me summarise :-

"Yes I did encounter a moron with a massive ego and tiny everything else. I don't share my spare time with juveniles anyway. As soon as I spoke 2 complete sentences to him he seemed completely baffled "

Were already, and selling either of them, let alone both, nails the relegation.

Yup. There's some serious rot in that club, I've heard, and it's easy to believe.

Do they want him to play as a striker?

Doubt it. Gomez or Benteke seem to be the new targets.

It feels really strange that even in this new sponsorship world where all PL clubs are practically licensed to print money, Wenger still is too stingy to get players. No, he just won't pay over €40M for a striker. Today, that's about the price of Bobby Zamora, so good luck with that, Arsène!

Bobby Zamora is €40m plus €2 territory. Over Wengers budget.

Almost there!!RATE it on a scale of 10

            Courtois | Jaku
            Shaw |Stones|Ward| Friend |Lenihan
            Micky| Tadic |Ayew| Eriksen |Fletcher
            Kun| Costa |Gray

Gray and Ayew are 2 week punts,After which they are both out for Deulofeu( STO) and a 6.5 FWD( Maybe Wickham ( BOU)

            Thoughts??

Everyone's RMT are starting to merge into pretty much the same team...
            2 from Heaton/Foster/Janko
            Shaw, Azpi/VVD , Friend, Evans/Pieters Stones/Mori,
            Mkhi/Mahrez, Eriksen, Tadic/Ayew, Deulofeu, Gradel/Fischer
            IBRA/Lukaku, Ageuro, Gray

            90% teams follow this template.

Buzzing to see United in action. FPL scouting and real pleasure. The Premier League has got more exciting thanks to them. They also helped make it what it is today, great to see them on their way back.

Ayew to West Ham looks very likely. Could trigger the transfers below
                Ulloa - Swansea
                Sakho - West Brom
                Berahino - Stoke

Keeping my eye on Ulloa in particular. Not interested in the other 2 I dont think. Although it is between Ulloa/Austin for my 3rd striker slot (if Ulloa goes)

I think Kightly BUR might be the best 5th MID. He is on corners and free kicks apparently. Caveat: Based on gravels poster previous page but have no reason to doubt.
