Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Anthony Martial

While Anthony Martial may have arrived at Old Trafford last September as something of an unknown quantity, the exorbitant amount it took to sign him from Monaco meant much was expected from the-then 19-year-old attacker.

The Frenchman ended the campaign with a reasonable return of 11 goals and six assists from 31 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing, with his personal highlights including a goal on his debut against Liverpool, while he also scored a last minute winner in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League saw Louis van Gaal replaced by Jose Mourinho as Man United manager, and with the Portuguese boss able to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, it’s expected that United will considerably improve on the meagre 49 goals they managed last term.

Having had a year to find his feet in England, Martial looks poised to better his attacking output from last season this time around, and reclassified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, is likely to prove a popular option for Fantasy managers.

  • The Van Gaal era at Old Trafford saw United regress significantly as an attacking force, so the arrival of Mourinho should see some improvement on that front. While the Portuguese manager’s sides haven’t always been the most attack-minded, Chelsea did score 73 goals in their 2014/15 title winning campaign, more than any side managed last term. Expectations for the likes of Martial should certainly be higher this time around then.
  • With Mkhitaryan’s creativity and Ibrahimovic’s ability to bring his team-mates into play, United’s forward line should be much improved this season. Martial only managed a goal attempt every 48.6 minutes last time out, but with the new boys providing 15 and 13 league assists for Dortmund and PSG respectively, the Frenchman’s ability to run in behind opposition backlines could come to fruition more often.
  • Martial impressively produced 213 penalty box touches last season, just two less than Tottenham’s Harry Kane despite playing seven less matches and being mainly stationed on the left flank. A goal conversion rate of 19.3% compared favourably to the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (15.8%), Kane (15.7%) and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (15.3%), so if he United can create him more opportunities, Martial’s clinical nature in front of goal should see an improvement on last year’s 11 strikes.
  • Martial was a major beneficiary of the Bonus Point System (BPS) last season, accruing 21 in total, a number that would have ranked him sixth among midfielders. Only Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (274) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (255) managed more dribbles than Martial’s 207 last season among midfielders and forwards, which is one area the former Monaco attacker should continue to shine in. His reclassification as a midfielder will also see him earn an extra point for each goal scored and clean sheet registered, so after United claimed 18 shut-outs last term, there is clearly plenty of scope for Martial to better his 141 points in FPL from last season.
  • The 20-year-old currently sits in just 7.5% of FPL 15-man squads, whereas fellow United midfielder Mkhitaryan has an ownership of 19.1%, with Ibrahimovic leading the way among Mourinho’s side with 31.8% ownership. The France international is shaping up to be a differential heading into Gameweek 1, then, and considering his place in the starting XI looks pretty secure, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard offering back-up, he certainly appears an overlooked option at this point in time.
  • Given United’s generally favourable start (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) to the new campaign, many Fantasy managers will be trying to find a spot for at least one of their attackers. With Martial and Mkhitaryan (both 9.5) offering a 2.0 saving from the Swede, the pair may offer the superior value, particularly if Rooney maintains spot-kick duties ahead of the former PSG striker. With Mkhitaryan still an unknown quantity when it comes to English football, despite his impressive attacking statistics whilst playing for Dortmund, Martial could be the one to favour from the off.

Good afternoon everybody. Fairly settled on this at the moment. What do we think?

    Mandanda
    Shaw/Morgan/Baines
    Bolasie/Hazard/Firmino/Eriksen
    Aguero/Lukaku/C.Wilson

    Subs: Jaku/capoue/PVA/Pieters

    Thanks for you help!

Everyone seems to have the following :
-> 1 or 2 premium mids with 4.5 rotating defnders
    -> Hazard
    ->Aguero

The rest of the midfield depends on the major decision of who your other 2 forwards are.
    Strategies being adopted are :
    A) Ibra + Lukaku/Vardy/Kane
    B) Ibra + 6.5
    C) Lukaku/Vardy +6.5
    D) 2 X 6.5

The midfield gets better as we go from up to down in our options.
Which strategy are you going for and why?

Having Mkhi is not about him tbh. It's about having Ibra. If you have Ibra then you don't want him. If you're going without Ibra, then you take one of Mkhi/Martial IMO

I've done one thing one year, the other the next. I reckon having just 1 playing keeper is the best option. I don't mean points wise, but health wise. You won't spend any extra time tinkering that week, and you won't be pulling your hair out for picking the wrong one that week. You already be stressed out about picking the wrong captain, and benching the wrong player...

A single keeper and a bench rotting 4.5 midfielder / striker is good for your health.

Think you need a playing 3rd striker with Ibe and Deulofeu.

Also your defence is poor. You're playing a 5-2 because there's no points at the back. With Champions League I'd imagine Leicester will also rotate their old centre halfs much more because they won't be able to play 2 top level games in a week.

      1. Jamie_GAWA
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

I don't agree with attacking rotation so I'd stay away, I think my defence is strong, I can't think of one premium defender I really want. I think Leicester will be fine early on in the season, later on I won't have any assets but they will be fine at the start IMO.

        Thanks for the reply

This is my team if i am going to use wildcard after GW3 for sure:
    Hart / Jaku
    Terry / Shaw / Fernandez / 4.0 / 4.0
    Hazard / Miki / Lamela / Ayew(Sigg) / Puncheon
    Aguero / Lukaku(CHE/EVE) / Borini

Sigg if Ayew moves to WHU
    Puncheon rotates Borini : WBA(H), MID(H), BOU(H)

This is purely for the first 3 GWs. Think this team is still quite flexible if there is any need for changes in the first 3 GWs.

      Afternoon, chaps!

Here's my first proper go at a team, what do you think?

      Foster
      Terry • Baines • Shaw
      KdB • Hazard • Martial • Bolasie
      Aguero • Long • Gray

      Jaku • Capoue • Friend • Paredes

I think Ibra is a bit pricey at 11.5, and not too keen on any of the 9m ish strikers (unles Lukaku goes to Chelsea), so I've gone for two 6.5s. If a must-have striker appears, I can downgrade one of the big 3 mids and upgrade Long or Gray.

Got Valencia over Shaw. My opinion is that i will get more assists from Valencia.

I'm going for it. His attacking output could be the best for any full-back in the league. Plus, he's a BPS magnet when they keep clean sheets. Can always do the straight swap to Shaw for security if needed.

When assessing foreign league players, keep in mind that PL is generous with assists, and FPL even more generous.

Just read from As that Real Madrid is looking for Moussa Sissoko, but Newcastle will wait for the club to bid Sissoko's right price.

Which is odd, since I thought they asked £35M for Sissoko.

He's worth no more than £30M

I really hope they don't fanny about and let the deal break down. Moussa has always been solid for us but even the fans would prefer an extra 30mil to spend on another CB and a top class central midfielder.

          He's not worth £30M even!

Well, maybe soon he is, the way PL prices go, I can see Colback being valued £30M in two years time. 😆

Don't forget that Colback is homegrown so maybe 50-60m would be more likely.... 😉

He made and played well in the Euro Semi + Final and with Madrid paying he'll easily go for £27+. Just the way football works these days.

Colback is already worth £30M. I don't know what you're on about....

Yup, his way overhyped EC performances make people think that arse hole is actually worth something.

He's a very skilled all round midfielder, though, I give him that.

If anything, Deulo is just as proven. Mirallas only makes more appeal due to set pieces. The Baines faithful still wish he'd break his leg pre-season so we can have our penalties and corners back. Baines was fantasy gold before Kevin spoilt the party. He's not even that good at set pieces! I'm quite bitter...

Hi Guys, first time posting so go easy on me 🙂

I have a quick question - Atbthe moment I have Ibra and Augero up front, the rest of my team is relatively strong but if I swap Ibra for Rooney ( who I think could trive in the number 10 spot ) that frees up some extra cash to strengthen the team throughout!

My question is who would you expect to score more points?
Ibra and Alli (my current selection) ot Rooney and KDB?

Thanks guys, really appreciate any feedback that you may have!

Always trust your gut feelings in FPL.
But if u go Rooney and KDB, u are doubling up on ManC attack with nearly a quarter of the given funds. could have a look at Hazard maybe?
And Eriksen over Alli for freshness and history

Thanks guys, makes sense, some great feedback!

I've actually just switched to a front six of Hazard, Ayew (assuming he moves to West Ham, would they play him up top I wonder?), Sanchez, Aguero, Rooney and Gray.

I'm happy with it but I am terrified of Ibra smashing in a load of goals early on and missing out!

I agree though, gut is always best and my gut tells me Ibra

Decided to try and draft a team with Ibra in it (since his ownership is now over 30% and climbing.) First time ive tried as my team only has Kun in at the mo.

      Heaton Jakupovic

Friend Funes Mori Francis Shaw/Valencia Terry

      Bolasie Deulofeu Ayew Hazard Fischer

      Agüero Gray Ibrahimovic

Having both Kun and Ibra really limits things elsewhere, but with both approaching pretty high ownership levels it could mean missing a good start as both have good fixtures for the first week.

Very solid team to be honest. I'm not sold on Ibra for 11.5mil but this draft is very decent and has him covered so why not.

Thoughts on my team. Thanks in advance.

      Foster (Jaku)
      VVD, Morgan, Fernandez (PVA, Friend)
      Mahrez, Tadic, Ayew, Deulofeu (Fletcher)
      Aguero, Zlatan, Negredo/Gray

      (1) 0.5itb to go Mahrez to Hazard in gw2 if Hazard explodes
      (2) If Williams goes to Everton then Fernandez to McAuley & will play Friend.
      (3) Also re (2) will opt for Gray over Negredo but atm favouring Negredo.

      Thanks all.
