Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Anthony Martial

While Anthony Martial may have arrived at Old Trafford last September as something of an unknown quantity, the exorbitant amount it took to sign him from Monaco meant much was expected from the-then 19-year-old attacker.

The Frenchman ended the campaign with a reasonable return of 11 goals and six assists from 31 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing, with his personal highlights including a goal on his debut against Liverpool, while he also scored a last minute winner in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League saw Louis van Gaal replaced by Jose Mourinho as Man United manager, and with the Portuguese boss able to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, it’s expected that United will considerably improve on the meagre 49 goals they managed last term.

Having had a year to find his feet in England, Martial looks poised to better his attacking output from last season this time around, and reclassified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, is likely to prove a popular option for Fantasy managers.

  • The Van Gaal era at Old Trafford saw United regress significantly as an attacking force, so the arrival of Mourinho should see some improvement on that front. While the Portuguese manager’s sides haven’t always been the most attack-minded, Chelsea did score 73 goals in their 2014/15 title winning campaign, more than any side managed last term. Expectations for the likes of Martial should certainly be higher this time around then.
  • With Mkhitaryan’s creativity and Ibrahimovic’s ability to bring his team-mates into play, United’s forward line should be much improved this season. Martial only managed a goal attempt every 48.6 minutes last time out, but with the new boys providing 15 and 13 league assists for Dortmund and PSG respectively, the Frenchman’s ability to run in behind opposition backlines could come to fruition more often.
  • Martial impressively produced 213 penalty box touches last season, just two less than Tottenham’s Harry Kane despite playing seven less matches and being mainly stationed on the left flank. A goal conversion rate of 19.3% compared favourably to the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (15.8%), Kane (15.7%) and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (15.3%), so if he United can create him more opportunities, Martial’s clinical nature in front of goal should see an improvement on last year’s 11 strikes.
  • Martial was a major beneficiary of the Bonus Point System (BPS) last season, accruing 21 in total, a number that would have ranked him sixth among midfielders. Only Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (274) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (255) managed more dribbles than Martial’s 207 last season among midfielders and forwards, which is one area the former Monaco attacker should continue to shine in. His reclassification as a midfielder will also see him earn an extra point for each goal scored and clean sheet registered, so after United claimed 18 shut-outs last term, there is clearly plenty of scope for Martial to better his 141 points in FPL from last season.
  • The 20-year-old currently sits in just 7.5% of FPL 15-man squads, whereas fellow United midfielder Mkhitaryan has an ownership of 19.1%, with Ibrahimovic leading the way among Mourinho’s side with 31.8% ownership. The France international is shaping up to be a differential heading into Gameweek 1, then, and considering his place in the starting XI looks pretty secure, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard offering back-up, he certainly appears an overlooked option at this point in time.
  • Given United’s generally favourable start (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) to the new campaign, many Fantasy managers will be trying to find a spot for at least one of their attackers. With Martial and Mkhitaryan (both 9.5) offering a 2.0 saving from the Swede, the pair may offer the superior value, particularly if Rooney maintains spot-kick duties ahead of the former PSG striker. With Mkhitaryan still an unknown quantity when it comes to English football, despite his impressive attacking statistics whilst playing for Dortmund, Martial could be the one to favour from the off.

I reckon he has a 2/3 chance of playing.

My logic is that they will either play one up top (him or Austin) or both together.

    Best midfielders priced at 4.5-5.0?

    1. Jonathan Leko looks good but is he nailed on or looks likely to start? I have no idea.

    2. Darren Fletcher, 2-3 pointer in 95% of his games. Don't expect too much for his price but still need more.

    3. Capoue, no idea, the stats don't impress me tho.

    4. Grujic, good preseason, too much competition, almost no chance of a starting position.

    5. Gray (Leicester), looks like a very good player but again not nailed on I guess.

    6. Hojbjerg again don't see him starting.

Who have I missed? Who's the best to get?

I have never understood this reasoning.. My team won't be any better by doing Gradel->Fletcher and saving 1M. I rather have a good sub in case of no-show, injury or suspension. Also gives me a good headache about who to start, because I won't be forced to start everyone but my 4.5 mid. Does that make any sense? 🙂

Surely not, but Feghouli (if nailed) should outscore Fletcher quite comfortably too. I won't be benching him every week like a 4.5

Points are usually tough to predict.

Agree especially when it comes to keepers. But if I bench Feg gw 1 (che) and he bags a brace, I won't beat myself up about it. At least I have him in my team instead of a 4.5 mid. Just my way of playing though 🙂

Ans easily, because can't see downside in that: same price, more points for goals, and points for CS's.

But if he was really redefined as a midfielder, they would have to raise his price, like they did to Martial. Would Rooney be more popular as 10.5 midfielder? No. Even as a 10.0 midfielder, probably not.

It's not so obvious considering the wealth of midfield options around that price and the lack of good striker options this year.

Would people be willing to drop Mahrez, Martial, Mkhi, Ozil etc to free up space for Rooney and 0.5? I'm not so sure.

But the question was would he be more popular as a 9m midfielder instead of a striker.

Of course he would, i wouldn't even consider him as a striker because he doesn't play as a striker.. he plays as a number 10 and should be classified as a mid (Same as Ozil, Firmino etc). If he was listed as a mid i would certainly consider him for sure. Even with other options available.

Not yet, I'm waiting until I see how the squad builds up. I don't think Pep has finished on transfer market yet. Some players will be sold too, that should clear things up a bit.

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 10 Years

I was thinking the lack of a pivot, and the seeming lack of them in the transfer market, makes a 3 at the back more likely? Where the outer centre backs can transition the play into the middle third.

But rather than wingbacks, it might turn into a 4 with a turnover, like in the German Cup final.

Can think of one player who could play the Lahm role, if you know what I mean. 😉

Not sure. It's not as if he didn't have players. It's whether he approves them. I don't think he'll let this squad dictate his tactic though, and we're likely going to see a lot of variation and rotation anyway.

Not yet, think defence is hardest to predict, because i think he'll buy a full-back and maybe another CB. Plus talk of Fernandinho playing there.

Does Williams to Everton mean for sure that Stones is on his way out?

A combo of Williams/Funes Mori + Stones (assuming he goes to City) would certainly be a must around here

    1. itsmilks
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

Williams to Everton is merely incidental. He adds some necessary experience, leadership and organisation to our backline.

      - Stones will leave once City stump up the necessary cash (more than they want to) - it'll probably drag out until the last day of the window.
      - Jagielka is unlikely to be fit for the start of the season, so I'd expect Williams/Funes Mori to be the first choice pairing to open the season.

I don't see Stones playing regularly enough to justify selection wherever he ends up this season (even at £5.0)

    Courtois / Jaku
    Shaw / Kaboul / Williams / Stones / Friend
    Fischer / Watmore / Hazard / Martial / Tadic
    Aguero / Lukaku / Wilson

    Thoughts on this team?

Thinking Watmore will blast past his price tag, quality little player. Otherwise coin flip between Gray and Wilson for me, I'm thinking Bournemouth are a slightly better team. I did have Ibra and Lamela instead of Martial Lukaku, but decided to change that on the basis Kaku will be a Cheslea starter
