The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

The Stock Check makes a return to these pages for the new campaign. Working in tandem with the Watchlist, this offers a same day appraisal of how the day’s matches influenced our view on players and teams.

On a tepid opening day, significant in the main for Leicester City’s defeat at Hull, we nonetheless witnessed a number of players boost early reputations, as a cast of mid-price midfielders and strikers came to the fore.

On the Rise

Nathan Redmond
Redmond overcame first half struggles to burst to life in the second period with a Saints equaliser. His underlying numbers were hugely encouraging – both in terms of creativity and threat. Available for 6.0, Redmond will likely curb interest in Dusan Tadic who also stood out in the 1-1 stalemate.

Riyad Mahrez
Mahrez’s return to penalty duties having relinquished them to Jamie Vardy in the latter part of last season was a huge break for his early adopters. We can now expect the 2% ownership gap between Mahrez and Vardy to open up further.

Ahmed Musa
Leicester’s record signing was thrown straight into the starting lineup at the KCOM stadium following an impressive pre-season. At 7.5 he’s an option in his own right but could also impact on Vardy’s output. He created more than he threatened in today’s defeat.

Demarai Gray
Ranieri made a statement by including the 20-year-old in his starting line-up – clearly Marc Albrighton’s start, at least away from home, now looks very tenuous. Gray is a 5.0 midfield option, fetched an assist and demands to be monitored.

Étienne Capoue
Two goals in a pre-season and a fine opening day effort. Capoue already looks to have established himself as the stand-out 4.5 option in midfield having been given license to join the attack in Walter Mazzarri’s 3-5-2.

Robert Snodgrass
The key figure in the Hull ranks, the former Leeds man hogged set-pieces throughout and provided the shock decisive strike. The three bonus points sealed his day and ensured a rise in stock.

Alvaro Negredo
A debut strike for the Spaniard who leapt to head home Gaston Ramirez’ assist. He was one of several mid-price strikers to flourish on the day, although arguably his forthcoming fixtures (sun wba CPL eve) promote him as the most attractive of that pack. Negredo soared to the top of the FPL “transfers in” hours after the final whistle.

Eric Lamela
The Argentine went into Gameweek 1 with 9% ownership as the fourth most popular Spurs midfielder. He followed up his five goals and nine assists last season with a headed equaliser at Goodison. Lamela showed enough to suggest that his £7.0m price tag could possibly see him challenge Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen (both 8.5) as the go-to Spurs midfield candidate.

Ross Barkley
A goal, four attempts and three chances created. Once again Barkley has started the season strongly – he’s now scored on the opening day for three consecutive seasons. Again, it suggests that he can deliver on his 7.5 price point but we’ve been here before. Deulofeu’s potential as a 6.5 midfield option deployed as a striker, remains a factor.

Salomon Rondon
Another 6.5 striker option to find the net, the Venezuelan boosted his stock following nine goals last season with a day one winner and a pair of bonus points. Like Negredo, the Baggies man boasts obliging forthcoming fixtures (EVE MID bou WHM).

The West Brom Defence
Tony Pulis’ side claimed the day’s other shut-out in the win at Crystal Palace with Ben Foster fetching the maximum bonus points. Gareth McAuley also earned bonus and remains the top owned West Brom defensive asset (9%). Their schedule suggests that further returns are imminent.

Shaqiri
The Swiss international hardly glittered in the Riverside stalemate and yet his curling free-kick brought him to our attention. Stoke’s fixtures are set to improve and further returns from Shaqiri could see the 6.0 midfielder unsettle Marko Arnautovic (7.5) as our chosen Potters asset.

Jordi Amat
Swansea had two 4.0 options earn clean sheets at Burnley, with Stephen Kingsley also fetching two bonus points. But Amat appears to have a stronger chance of retaining his start and warrants monitoring; he was the stand-out performer in the Swans’ rearguard.

Fernando Llorente
A promising debut for the Spaniard which saw him register an assist for Leroy Fer’s late goal. Llorente’s statistics were very promising and indicated that he’s another name in the mid-price that demands assessment.

Willy Caballero
Ousting Joe Hart to the bench, the Argentine could now present another 5.0 option in Pep Guardiola’s rearguard to rival Jon Stones. Doubts remain on City’s defence, however.

Sergio Aguero
Aguero’s stock is already sky high but it seems remiss not to mention the Argentine given his nine point return. This was not one of his more eye-catching shifts and yet still had six efforts on goal, a total matched only by Llorente over Saturday’s matches. Handed the armband by 34% of FPL managers, he duly delivered his expected strike.

Raheem Sterling
The assist for Aguero’s spot-kick was just part of a performance that drew glowing praise from his manager. Can Guardiola revive a player who was once pushing heavy-hitter status at Liverpool? Priced at 8.0, if the Spaniard can achieve that, we will have yet another midfield asset to consider.

In Decline

Jamie Vardy
Owners of the 10.0 striker suffered a sobering day as they witnessed Vardy miss several opportunities and, more significantly, relinquish spot-kick duties to Mahrez. A decline in ownership looks inevitable, even with back-to-back home matches to come. Vardy was top of the “transfers out” table at the time of writing.

The Leicester Defence
Claudio Ranieri’s assets are suffering sales from back to front, with diminishing confidence in the Foxes backline following the reversal on Humberside. N’Golo Kante’s absence already seems to be a factor.

Joe Hart
Dropped to the bench by Pep Guardiola, the 5.5 keeper option went into Gameweek 1 claiming 6.9% ownership: they must surely now be planning an immediate exit.

Hugo Lloris
Another keeper to suffer a blow, the Frenchman was forced to give way on 30 minutes with a hamstring injury. He’ll undergo scans, with Michel Vorm (5.0) destined to deputise during any term of absence – a situation worth monitoring.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why the panic after the first match?

All the points scorers could be rubbish next game and those who disappointed could do well.

ok.. i spent a lot of time watching all of these games(live and replays) so i think i deserve a repost. ended up as the last post on the last page.. so here goes
So i've gone through the whining/moaning/panicking and noticed there are a few things no one seems to have mentioned
1.Ramirez was fantastic today.. Best player on the pitch by far and looks a real gem at his price. No longer slow or lazy.. he helped out in defense and was the Boro's main man going forward. Add set pieces to his locker and he looks a bargain at his price
2.Puel needs to let go of his stupid diamond midfield with 2 upfront system. All it does is expose the fullbacks(Cedric happened to be terrible btw) and force their strikers out wide(same thing has been happening all of preseason.. mentioned this many times over the past week and before the deadline today). Tadic was brilliant but Soton on the whole were not really that good. Can see Manutd ripping them apart unfortunately 🙁 .. As predicted Redmond looks the best option at his price since he can play in both the 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 formations(on the wing) while Long/Austin cant do both(Austin especially just cannot work in the 4-4-2 due to lack of pace)
3.Amat was fantastic(again.. all signs were pointing to this preseason) and he looks a bargain at 4.0
    4. Snodgrass will always be a relevant fpl option no matter who he plays for. absolutely love the guy and even though many of us(including me) doubted him this season i'm glad he is trying to prove us wrong! Perfect fpl player with his monopoly of set pieces.
Goodnight... for real this time 🙂

plenty mentioned 3 and 4.. but Amat has been a Swans fan favorite even before the deadline so i just wanted to mention that. And i just had to talk about Snoddy.. love the guy 🙂 (and no.. i dont own him currently 🙁 )

Ok this is embarassing.. i forgot to add this paragraph again 😆 .. so i've got a repost within a repost 🙂 ..

Kept Lamela too which I felt was great value. Nice start from my lower priced priced mids. Bring on the so called big hitters tomorrow and Monday.
            Hazard and Firmino!

How is your GW so far

i followed my gut and had
Foster, Amat, Evans, Mahrez Ramirez Redmond Capoue Aguero(c) all performing(some of them on my bench though) and got Costa/Firmino/Ibra/Shaw left to play and a healthy score of 54 so i cant complain 🙂
I wish i could get Lamela in.. but the way my team is structured it's not possible atm. Good luck monday mate.. Hope it's Hazard AND Costa assisting each other 🙂

Based off what you saw today of Spurs and Palace, what do you think of Kane as captain for GW2 ?

Would you captain Ibra or Kun ahead of Kane ?

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

i went with Ibrahimovic instead of Vardy because i wanted the option to downgrade to Kane instead of being forced to upgrade. it's safe to say im not even thinking of making the downgrade yet! From what i saw of Spurs vs Everton i dint see Kane at all 😆 .. he was invisible. all he did was provide and assist for a lamela shot. I'm staying away until he actually scores a goal from open play. only then will i get him in. i can see Puel's formation coming apart next week so i'd captain a manutd player.. that being said i'd rather watch them play first tmrw before making a decision

Brilliant - thanks a lot for the detailed reply. Was disappointed with Kane today, but maybe palace will be worse than Everton at the back..

I squeezed in all 3 of Kane Aguero and Kun into my team so I'm keeping my options open for now.. got away with it this week because the budget mids delivered. But if Ibra scores tomorrow and Utd look attacking then I guess Ibra(c) is nailed on. Maybe Fonte and Bertie will return next weekend though, have to look into that too.

Cheers though, enjoyed your summary you should consider writing a community article on it this week if you have the time !

Live in Australia. Basically Foxtel (main pay tv here) has lost the EPL rights which are now with Optus for 3 years. Signing up to Optus requires atleast a phone plan in your house and is expensive and a general hassle. We now just get one free to air game a week.

Needless to say I went out nightclubbing last night, absolutely out did myself and came home not so sober to 71 pts 🙂

I dunno We've looked pretty dissapointing all preseason. I'm not talking about score fm line. Leicester were the better team in the shield and we fielded an almost starting 11

"Leicester were the better team in the shield"

They offered almost zero real threat aside from Okazaki's two chances and were porous on defense.

Rooney just destroyed our fluidity in attack, unfortunately.

Porous? One was a lingard run that was badly defended and the other was an Ibra header from a Valencia cross? I thought they were decent defensively. But I do agree with Rooney point I hate having him in the team playing. We had almost no chance because he killed every attack with his awful passing

LVG is just a stubborn coward.

Mourinho has covered himself by saying Rooney will never be a 6 or 8 for him. Basically, either thrive at 10 or you're going to the bench.

I think he's sneakily given Rooney a long leash. He's a United legend and the captain, he can't just drop him and say he's crap. But he can 'praise him' and say he's a goalscorer, not a deep playmaker (the whole 'anyone can play a long ball under no pressure') so that he can restrict him to two positions: 9 and 10. Let's be honest, he'll never play 9 over Ibra or Rash..

It will just take a while for enough sales/purchases to happen.

Why would you make transfers early in that situation?

So transfers don't happen because the ideal situation is waiting until as late as possible.

Can't wait for the video review system to cancel out s***ty ref calls.

Ya really something that needs to be implemented. If football (American) had no replays games would be impossible to ref. I think football(European) is even harder to ref because of the overabundace of flopping. Really confusing why it hasn't been added. At least have offsides be on a video system

Really need a happy medium, though. The problem with the NFL right now is that the rules, particularly as to what constitutes a catch, is so misty and gets called on frequently every game, as well as 3rd down plays etc. but that slows down the game so much and can be off-putting. FIFA need to make sure that video technology doesn't take over and ruin the game for your average viewer.

Ya but I think some calls are pretty obvious through a couple seconds of replay. Then if it is rly rly close give the subjectivity to the ref

For future reference, if there's 3 million players and you're ranked in the top 10k or even 100k, it's fair to assume you have had an excellent start and have done well. 😉

Everyone's thoughts on City's defence? They looked all over the place at times, the full backs were in strange positions. I feel that a team like Leicester can get in behind their defence and do some real damage. Doubts over Stones' value for the time being

All over the shop. Don't look good as a unit, and I'd worry over the coverage it gets from midfield. Guardiola has never really done well building, organising and maintaining a defense.

        • 11 Years

I'm talking about actual defense by the way. His teams do well in terms of not conceding because they maintain possession very well, and defend from the front as a team.

Yeah true, they avoid conceding insofar as they're able to keep possession, once you send a long ball down the flank it's anyone's guess. Happened way too many times at Barcelona and Bayern
