Scout Report – Simone Zaza

Following injuries to Andy Carroll and Andre Ayew, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic strengthened his attacking options with the acquisition of Juventus striker Simone Zaza late last week. The Italian international joins on a season-long loan for an initial €5 million, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 25-year-old is keen to improve over the next nine months after struggling to nail down a regular role with the Serie A side:

“I want to thank everyone for welcoming me including the fans and everyone at the club. I wanted to start a new experience and I feel this is the right choice for me… I want to become a better player and I know I can do that at West Ham. Unfortunately we could not qualify for the Europa League, but I am hoping I can help the club do that next season.”

The History

Born in Policoro, Italy, Zaza began his youth career at Stella Azzurra Bernalda and Valdera before being scouted by Serie A side Atalanta, whom he signed with at the age of 15.

He made his professional debut for Atalanta against Reggina in April 2009, but would only be granted two further league appearances for the club before joining Sampdoria in July 2010.

Zaza failed to establish himself at Sampdoria, though, and was sent out on loan three times over the following four seasons. He played four matches for Serie B outfit Juve Stabia in 2011/12, scoring one goal, before joining Viareggio, a third tier side, on loan during the second half of the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted 11 times in 18 matches.

The following season saw Zaza take in another loan spell, this time with Serie B side Ascoli, where he again impressed, scoring 18 goals and adding four assists from 36 appearances.

Having played just twice for Sampdoria over three years, Zaza moved to Sassuolo in the summer of 2013. He scored nine goals and registered two assists in 33 Serie A matches, and improved on that record the following campaign, totalling 11 goals and three assists in 31 matches.

Last summer, Zaza joined Juventus but struggled for pitch time with the Italian champions. Handed only five starts (and 14 sub appearances) he registered a respectable five goals and an assist in just 663 minutes.

Capped by Italy at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 levels, totalling six appearances, Zaza made his senior debut against Holland in September 2014. He featured three times for the Azzurri during Euro 2016 and has so far played 14 times for his country, scoring once and providing three assists.

The Prospects

Given the afore-mentioned injuries to Carroll and Ayew, it’s expected that Zaza will be West Ham’s first choice striker for the time being – ahead of Jonathan Calleri, Enner Valencia and Ashley Fletcher in the pecking order.

The Italian could be a little short of match fitness having failed to feature for Juve during their first two league matches, but he did register some minutes in pre-season, including an appearance against the Hammers, where he scored the winning goal in a 3-2 win for the Serie A champions.

It’s expected that the new boy will come in at 7.0 or 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and with the Hammers likely to be boosted by the return of the hugely influential Dimitri Payet after the international break, Zaza should be on the end of a decent supply line, which also includes the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Michail Antonio and Sofiane Feghouli, another who should return to full fitness over the next couple of weeks.

Zaza impressively averaged a goal attempt every 22.1 minutes last season, which was better than both Carroll (27.6) and Ayew (45.4), although the later did play on the right wing in the majority of his appearances whilst playing for Swansea.

The Italian is not really a target man, though, winning just 17 of his 35 aerial duels last season, relying instead on his clever movement and calmness in front of goal. Zaza isn’t blessed with exceptional pace, though, so it appears he will be heavily reliant on chances being created for him.

Bearing in mind that most Fantasy managers are currently holding Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, Zaza may well turn out to be a viable option in that crucial mid-price bracket if he can take advantage of some promising fixtures to follow. Obviously a potential ban for Aguero would force a reassessment.

West Ham are braced for four favourable home clashes (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN) in the next six Gameweeks, promoting the appeal of an attack that found the net 65 times last term.

Although a fit-again Payet looks the Hammers’ likeliest source of returns, Zaza – if he can up his match sharpness over the international break – has the potential to hit the ground running.

If you’re eyeing up the West Ham options, Antonio – at 7.0 – is also one to monitor after taking his tally to two goals in as many matches with a weekend header away to City. The downside, however, is that the versatile former Forest man is just as likely to be fielded in defence, judging by Bilic’s team sheets, though a move to the attacking midfield three could yet see him emerge as one of the best mid-price options in the centre of the park.

Stones and Friend really aren't huge issues in people's teams. They're still good options. Certainly not worth a WC if you're going to -4.

Its when you're looking at -8, -12 that a WC is probably better.

I know what you're saying, and am dwelling on it myself. WC now and you catch a few price rises over 2 weeks. WC later (maybe only one week) and you get to see how transfer deadline activity affects pitch time of certain players, or even how rotation will play out for CL teams.

      But -8 is -8.

    Hazard Sanchez Ozil Lamela/Antonio Capoue

    Lukaku Ibra Diamonde

    1.4 ITB

Plan to bring Aguero back, see how Arsenal options perform and either:
    Sanchez to Firmino or

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Has all the Fantasy relevant transfer business been done? Or are there still some unresolved issues that may alter our transfer/wildcard plans.

Bony to West Ham for example?

Will Berahino actually get his move away from the Hawthorns?

Hoping Baston will be a huge success then? That midfield is fantastic though, I doubt many other players will have Payet, Sanchez and Hazard, let alone with Sterling in there too. May be better options than Stones? Just worrying that City haven't managed a clean sheet yet. Although that of course could change with Kompany coming back soon. Have you considered Van Aanholt?

That's not strictly true. He took one in a preseason penalty shootout a few weeks ago. And missed... Also took one for Liverpool in a penalty shootout v Middlesbrough in 2014 in the Capital One Cup. And missed!

(Posted on previous post, my bad)

Hi guys! Thinking of the day.

Given the nearly essential nature of very expensive strikers and the difficulty to find the best mid priced midfielders, would it be a totally crazy idea to focus on slightly more expensive defenders with high potential bonus points and assists such as Baines, Azpilicueta, Shaw and Valencia rather than going for the mid price midfielders in the upper bracket? Everton, Man U and Chelsea all play with two midfielders in front of the back four (Gueye-Barry/ Pogba-Fellaini / Matic-Kante) what should increase their defensive resilience. Baines has penalties and Valencia/Shaw/Azpilicueta are going forward a lot with a lot of crosses as minimum end product (e.g. Valencia against Hull).

For instance, would you rather have Valencia, Baines and Azpilicueta (Amat / 4.0 non playing) + Redmond/Bolasie and Ramirez as third and fourth midfielder or a cheaper defense allowing you to upgrade Redmond/Bolasie and Ramirez to Tadic and another more expensive midfielder like Barkley for your third and fourth spot? Just thinking, not entirely convinced myself. Please let me know what you think.

    Have a good day

I tried that once and it backfired when Sanchez or hazard hit 4

You could still have a heavy hitter in midfield like Hazard and a decent second like Firmino/Coutinho/Mane. Key here is third and fourth spot. to cap it all: better defense but third and fourth with the likes of Ramirez and Bolasie/Redmond or cheaper defense with Tadic/Siggy/Barkley/Cazorla/maybe even Sterling.

That week when you have no clean sheets and goals are flying in from mids and forwards you can't afford ... you will be regretting it ... been there, seen it, done it, regretted it

Thanks for your reply. The three expensive defenders would still allow you to have Ibra-Kun and Benteke or a 6.5 forward and Hazard + Firmino in the midfield. I thought it would totally unbalance the team but it just hurts the third and fourth spot in your midfield.

I think having 3 of the 6 defence as 5.5 priced premium is ok (keeper, Man U, Everton etc.) but the 4.5 options are numerous and if you get it right they can match the score of the bigger ticket premium defenders

No sure about that with the likes of Azpi, Baines, Shaw and Valencia.

For sure. 5.5/6 defs are far superior to their midfield equivalents. We know Chelsea and Man U will probably get 13+ clean sheets this season... Dunno why people don't see this.

        Hi NOQUARTERNT,

This is exaclty what I was wondering. As we have to spend a lot in attack, the third and fourth spot in the midfield are crucial. I was wondering if I should consider

        A)

        Baines-Valencia-Azpilicueta (Amat / non playing 4.0 defender)

        Hazard - Firmino - Redmond/Bolasie/other option around 6.0 - Ramirez/other option around 5.5.

        B)

Downgrading one of the expensive defenders to a 4.5 in order to upgrade the 6.0 or 5.5 options in the midfield.

This has been in my head since I woke up 🙂

          Hazard Ozil Sterling Mane
          Ibra Lukaku

            Hi Taurul,

I always try to play 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.

WC team in my head this morning:

            Foster (Jaku)

Baines - Valencia - Azpi (Amat - Lenihan)

            Hazard - Firmino - 6.0 - 5.0 (Capoue)

            Ibra - Benteke - Kun

If Kun is injured/suspended: Lukaku in for him and Ozil for the 6.0.

            What are your thoughts?

No indeed. That might hurt against Bournemouth at home. But I can see Sane and Navas eat some of Nolito's and Sterling's minutes. First match away to Man U does not scare me to be honest.

    Schmeichel
    Valencia / Evans / Stones
    Hazard / Firmino / Bolasie / Redmond
    Aguero / Grey / Zlatan

    Jaku / Capoue / Friend / Pieters

1FT and .8 in the bank.

If Kun isn't banned then will hold the trade. If he does get banned I might go Kun -> Lukaku.

    Thoughts?

Sterling, Ozil, Antonio , Lamela, Hazard

    Ibra Lukaku (Diomande)

lukaku and sterling > Kun and Capoue

Very temped to bench him but depends how long he is out for.

      1 game - Bench 100%
      2 games - Bench 50%
      3 games - Trade

I don't think I'll upgrade mid though just trade him out to Lukaku. Not a fan of taking hits and it'll be so hard getting him back. I'll be keeping my wildcard though ; )
