This Much We Know – Gameweek 9

Philippe Coutinho may have settled an argument. Sergio Aguero is scaring us, Bob Bradley is already off our Christmas list but we can’t get enough of Antonio Conte. Here’s all the stuff and nonsense gathered from Gameweek 9…

Aguero has put the frighteners on us…
Okay, so now we’re worried.

Despite nagging doubts, we had the confidence that Pep would hand Aguero a recall but, I for one was expecting a very different reaction from the man himself.

While Aguero’s listless display was symptomatic of City’s first half malaise, there’s no doubt that Sunday’s showing dented our confidence further.

It seems unfeasible that we should consider dropping a fit Sergio Aguero, particularly with the fixture list about to smile on Guardiola’s City.

But, with just a single goal in five Premier League appearances, it’s difficult to argue against claims that Aguero is now failing to offer value.

We’ve always had faith in the City man as a captain option – that ensured that, however much the FPL inflated his price tag, he would always offer the potential returns to justify it.

Right now, it’s debatable just how many of us would throw the armband his way ahead of a Gameweek 10 trip to West Brom – an opponent that will raise their game and revel in City’s apparent loss of confidence.

If we’re not looking to Aguero for double points, the thirteen million starts to look very very expensive.

Coutinho is close to ending the argument…
Another mesmeric display. Another goal.

Philippe Coutinho is getting close to ending all the chatter on Liverpool’s best midfield option and giving us little option but to tow the line and acquire his services.

There’s a strong argument for doubling with Roberto Firmino – certainly the pair appear to offer a tempting combination of goals and assists – a blend that drowns out the claims of Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane.

Mane scored and assisted in Saturday’s game but was again denied the maximum bonus – he’s scored four goals and laid on two assists but has just four bonus points to his name.

With Coutinho and Firmino sharing goals and assists and supplying flurries of key passes, Mane’s propensity to take players on and lose possession is punishing his Bonus Point System tally.

Cazorla is key to Arsenal cutting edge…
Predictably, Arsenal’s attacking impetus hit the buffers, just as hordes of FPL managers jumped on Theo Walcott’s accelerating bandwagon.

We’ve been here before . There seems to have been countless Emirates encounters where Arsene Wenger’s side have struggled to break down teams, bereft of an effective plan B.

The fact is, with Santi Cazorla on the pitch, their plan A is so much more likely to deliver the goods.

Walcott and Alexis Sanchez were forced to rely on half chances against Middelsbrough, butting into a mass defence that strangled Arsenal’s best efforts.

Cazorla is the key master that can often unlock such a strategy – we’ve already witinessed it this season with his two assists in the Gameweek 3 in the win over Southampton.

Many will hold Sanchez and Walcott ahead of the trip to Sunderland but Cazorla’s availability could be key to repaying such faith.

We’ve fallen out with Bradley already…
We welcomed his false nine that led to Gylfi Sigurdssson’s Gameweek 8 goal at the Emirates but, a week on, we’ve now changed our opinion on Bob Bradley.

The American reacted to that first defeat with five changes, ousting budget darlings Jordi Amat and Leroy Fer to the bench.

It remains to be seen if this knee jerk reaction is permanent but, in Amat’s case, the argument for his return seems pretty flimsy given the Swans’ clean sheet against Watford.

…but we’re taking a shine to Conte…
Down in West London, Antonio Conte is shaping up to be earn hero status.

Following a Gameweek 6 humbling at the hands of Arsenal, the Italian reshaped his Chelsea side and has since maximised their Fantasy potential.

In Marcos Alonso, he’s given us a wing-back who gets forward to shoot and assists.

He’s somehow getting goals and assists out of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic.

But, best of all, he may have just revived Eden Hazard’s fortunes to return the Belgian to our radars, just as we consider the possibility of flushing funds from our attacks.

Hazard now has four goals in four starts for club and country and, in the new Chelsea shape, appears to be bombing on with reckless abandon, free of all defensive duties.

The Blues run of three wins with nine goals scored without conceding will now be tested by some rigorous fixtures. Come through that spell and Hazard will drop on our laps for Christmas.

We’ve got Costa all wrong….
We were laying odds on Costa conveniently earning a fifth booking against United – manufacturing an absence against West Ham United for Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie.

But Costa is clearly a changed man.

He’s not only earning us unlikely bonus points but he’s now navigated three Premier League matches without a yellow card.

His personal best is six league outings – if he makes that we all need to buy him by way of honouring the achievement.

Son is not the answer….
Rested at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 9, Son Heung-min was restored against Bournemouth but lasted only an hour, mustering just a single shot with three touches in the box.

Having scored just four in five matches in all competitions, it’s clear that, despite Son’s sparkle, Spurs without Harry Kane still lack the means to hurt opponents.

His return, mooted for the Gameweek 11 north London derby with Arsenal, will cast doubt on Son’s role.

Moussa Sissoko’s seemingly inevitable suspension opens up the gap for Son to remain in the starting XI but we have to question how Mauricio Pochettino will deploy him.

The Alli and Kane double act will surely be revived, leaving Son battling for a start and perhaps in a flank role that will reduce his output.

Karanka needs to build around the Traore’s pace…
Snapped up from relegated Aston Villa having been underused, Aitor Karanka turned to Adama Traore’s blistering pace to drive Middlesbrough’s counter attacks at the Emirates.

It’s a tactic that should have won them three points.

Traore terrorised the Gunners’ defence and saw him fire two of his own efforts on target, only to be denied by Petr Cech’s heroics.

Now the challenge for Karanka is to build his side’s attacking ploys around the winger in the long-term and at the Riverside.

If he can achieve that, we may just have have found another 4.8 prospect.

Heaton is perhaps the only essential…
If Burnley preserve their top-flight status, they will owe a huge debt to their skipper.

We started the season anticipating that Tom Heaton would reward our faith by replicating his 2014/15 form which saw him ranked second, despite suffering relegation; it turns out he may surpass it.

Another seven saves in the win over Everton saw him move to 47, that’s 13 more than any other keeper. Heaton has now returned 12 points from saves alone, ensuring that he goes on presenting outstanding value for his 4.6 price tag.

With so many areas of our squad seemingly in flux, it’s hard to deny Heaton as our season keeper.

Defoe doesn’t fancy another rescue act…
Having declared that Sunderland have moved “backwards” under David Moyes, it’s safe to say that confidence is hardly flowing through Jermain Defoe at present.

With just a single goal in five Premier League outings, his current form has dipped alarmingly to spark FPL sales.

Forthcoming match-ups with Bournemouth and Hull City may just lend him a stay of execution but, a further blank against Arsenal will likely trigger further trades and a slide in price.

The Gunners have six clean sheets in seven in all competitions; it doesn’t look good.

Redmond is worth another look…
He’s buzzed all season, producing performances and winning plaudits that belied a humble FPL output.

Now, with back-to-back goals, Redmond has blinked on the radar once again, with his modest 5.9 price point putting us on alert.

There are two major caveats.

Southampton’s fixtures are somewhat abhorrent. While the Saints have form, St Mary’s meetings with Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton will test and potentially blunt their cutting edge.

Secondly, Sofiane Boufal is a headache – both for us and Claude Puel.

Emerging from the bench at the Etihad with Dusan Tadic making way, we should not expect the Serb to be under threat.

Instead Puel will have to find another solution to work his record signing into the Saints attack and that could see Redmond’s minutes under threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The problem with everybody saying to get rid of Aguero is that it's the team not playing well collectively, not just him. Nacho looked good off the bench this week, but he was an abomination at home to Everton. City will turn this corner and they don't actually have a deep enough squad for Aguero not to be key to that.

Yes you can make your overall team much better without him. It's a very valid tactic. But City could easily score 3 or 4 against West Brom or Boro and if they do, Aguero is likely to be integral to that.

Plus unless you're on a wildcard, you can't shift all the funds round easily without hits.

So why not go with no city until they start showing form again?

      Good fixtures coming up though

Because they could easily score 3 or 4 against West Brom like the article says.........?

Exactly. Point is in an on song city, I would still rather have aguero than any other player. Fine to move him out temporarily, but let's not claim he's either untouchable or should never be picked again.

I would if I do. If aguero bombs again tomorrow I think I'll transfer him out for the weekend. Won't be bringing in any city cover. Not when pool and Chelsea are flying. I think the time has come for Aguero to be treated like everyone else. If United were in any sort of form swapping him for Zlatan this week and then swapping him back would be very sound.

then swapping Aguero for Ibra seems to be going against the principle that made you want to drop Aguero in the first place. No form, team looking poor. Why not just go with Costa who, like you said, is playing for a team that is flying at the moment?

No need to panic with him. Like you say unless you're on a wildcard he'd need multiple more games of failure for you to get the upper hand without hits

panic on this site is crazy. Everyone getting rid of Kun, Son, Sanchez is mental. Chasing points gets you nowhere in this game

I wouldn't say dropping Aguero / Son is chasing points. Son has barely played the last two matches and looked poor. Aguero now has 5 games for club and country without scoring. It isn't like he was unlucky in the Southampton game, he just looked anonymous...

    Which defender??:

    1. Pieters/Cameron

    2. Holebas

    3. Smith/Francis

Rest of defence is Mustafi Valencia Evans Amat, so I need someone to rotate well with West Brom fixtures. Apparently Bournemouth work well, but stoke fixtures look so tempting, and Holebas has such great attacking threat. Also have no stoke or Bournemouth or Watford players.

Anyone using the ICT index on FPL site has a form indicator? How does it match with the FFS form tables? Guess I need to get around to finally buy a membership. Went with Shaqiri over Lallana for my transfer yesterday, due to the former having better ICT index (and already having Couthino). Feels a bit knee-jerky now, though.

Pieters has virtually no attacking threat while Cameron has had like 5 shots already. Plus Cameron is in more attacking position. Is it because you think Cameron isn't nailed??? Give your reasons if you prefer pieters over Cameron.

Only one i could've made the swap for money wise was Lallana and he didn't tempt me. Hence chose to increase team value. Also Stoke have good matches coming up too. Not too stoked about Allen either Byt he tends to make good late runs to the box every now and then.

    City's(Kun's) next 4 opponents defensive stats h/a:

    Goals conceded/GA conc/Goals inside box/BC conceded

    Wba 5/63/5/7
    Mid 5/71/5/3
    Cpal 4/46/3/5
    Burn 4/104/3/6

Now look at someone like Watford's(Ighalo/Deeney) next 4...

    Hull 12/90/10/9
    livp 8/43/6/8
    Leic 13/63/13/12

Just enough money to do Snodgrass and Antonio to Allen and Walcott but for a hit.

    Worth pulling the trigger?

The other transfer I'm tempted by is Antonio to Arnautovic. Stokes fixtures look tasty and i think the Allen goals and Shaq long rangers may be false beacons and Arn could be the explosive one through the next few weeks. Stats are decent and will be true differential

    Anyone taking the punt?

Arnie is (like i guess pretty much everyone else) a confidence player. Seems lacking in that department atm somehow. Best punt of the lot though imo.

Would've gone with Arnie over Shaq if not for Arnie's 4 yc's. He's probably the better player, though.

Niles is very mature for his age.

I used to watch Ipswich's matches just to watch him play last year.
He'll probably make it further than any other youngster we have if the media/his mother don't destroy his carrer.

Met a stoke die hard fan the other day. I asked him which of their mids to buy in FPL. He told me he d buy Allen even if he was priced the same as Arnautovic. I then went n checked his stats/watched him over the past few games. Boy does he look like a bargain. Has it just become cool on here to not rate him?

Interesting. I have Allen too at the minute (mostly as I had a spare one a week or so ago so cashed in on Capoue) But Arn looks to have that explosiveness in him.
Allen is better prospect statswise than Capoue so is a bargain at the price but I don't think his ceiling is especially high

I think Shaqiri is the best option. He's on all set pieces, and played further up than Allen last game. I think he'll have a hand in any goals Shaq or Allen have too. Allen doesn't create much, he's very box to box which I don't like in a 4th midfielder.

    Need some help!

I'm playing a Half Season GW19 Cashout ML. Already chasing 50 points with 10 weeks left.
    I have Aguero but I don't own either Lukaku/Costa.

Do you think I should do Aguero to Lukaku this week? I don't have many weeks to be patient with Aguero if it was a GW38 ML I would have surely stuck with him.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

I think the shorter format is more reason to keep Kun, the goals will come and will hit 2/3 in a game soon, especially with the fixtures. You should probably find a way of getting one of Kaku or Costa as well though

    Any other suggestions?

Is smith worth the 0.3 over pieters or Cameron?

If I get smith I would get lallana in for snodgrass but if I go pieters/Cameron I would have enough money to get arnie. Also, Bournemouth fixtures work well with West Brom's and I've got Evans as 4th def. Arnie is on 4yc as well so I quite wary of this. I could get pieters/Cameron and lallana then.

    Your thoughts?????

Yea I know, was going to say it'd be a 2 game punt then back to Chadli. Maximize point potential etc etc.

I'm leaning towards A. Main reason being I think WBA (Chadli) fixtures turn in 2GWs. He has proved he is a quality attacking player in the league, the team's attack runs through him and he is on PKs. I'd honestly play him agaisnt LEI as they are suspect when playing away.

That said, C would be the move I'd recommend if you don't care about Chadli.

      1. Shifty
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

Thanks - forgot to mention it'd be for a 2 week punt as I'd like to get Chadli in thereafter.

I definitely care about Chadli, was on him the moment he made the transfer and he's returned handsome rewards 🙂 just exploring options. A is abit dull but yea Cathcart and Williams abit deadweight. So gutted went with Cathcart over Holebas due to the latter's injury doubt when I WC-ed.
