The Stock Check – Gameweek 14 – Sunday

Roberto Firmino draws a blank as Sadio Mane and Emre Can plunder the points prior to Liverpool’s late collapse at the Vitality. Later in the day, Zlatan Ibrahimovic continues his improved form as Romelu Lukaku’s stock plummets further…

On The Rise

Sadio Mane
Liverpool’s top scorer took his tally to seven goals for the season after slotting home the opener at the Vitality Stadium.

The second most transferred in player for Gameweek 14 due to team-mate Philippe Coutinho’s injury, Mane netted away from Anfield for the first time since the season opener at Arsenal and also chipped in with an assist against the Cherries.

Although he’s set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, the packed hectic schedule could still see Mane rack up the points.

Between Gameweek 15-20, which takes us all the way up to January 2, he faces West Ham, Middlesbrough, Everton, Stoke and Sunderland, in addition to hosting Man City’s porous defence on Boxing Day.

However, having limped off this afternoon, though, his fitness will need to be monitored ahead of a busy December.

Emre Can
Handed a place in our Spot the Differentials article, the German continued his impressive form with a goal and assist this afternoon.

Can has now served up three strikes and an assist in the last five Gameweeks, yet, despite coming in at a mere 4.9 in FPL, sat in less than 2% of squads prior to the weekend.

Although Adam Lallana returned to action off the bench, Can’s contribution suggests that he’s likely to retain his starting berth ahead of Georginio Wijnaldum – the German has now started each of the last seven Gameweeks.

Divock Origi
It’s three goals in as many matches for the Liverpool frontman after a superbly taken strike in the Reds’ surprise loss at Bournemouth.

After emerging from the bench to notch against Sunderland last week, Origi has been rewarded with back-to-back starts in all competitions and also netted in the midweek cup win over Leeds United.

With Coutinho sidelined for a number of weeks, the Belgian’s form may well have cemented him a place in Jurgen Klopp’s XI for the time being.

Given that Mane is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, Origi – at just 6.5 in FPL – will be pushing to retain that starting place over the next couple of months, although Daniel Sturridge, once fit, will clearly be a factor.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Capitalising on an error by Maarten Stekelenburg, the United frontman took his tally to six goals in as many matches across all competitions.

Having netted four times in the first 10 Gameweeks, Ibrahimovic has finally started to translate the underlying numbers into Fantasy returns, firing four goals in his subsequent three league outings.

With the need for a Sergio Aguero replacement a priority, United’s schedule from Gameweek 16 hands them seven very favourable fixtures (cpl, wba, SUN, MID, whu, sto, HUL) in the following eight to promote the Swede’s appeal.

Considering that Juan Mata dropped to the bench despite the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney, Ibra looks the safest bet for those backing Jose Mourinho’s men to flourish.

Nathan Ake
A late winner against Liverpool made it two goals in three appearances since being handed a first start in Gameweek 12.

Ake’s recent displays hand Eddie Howe a real headache once he has a full quota of defenders to choose from – with Charlie Daniels ruled out again today, Adam Smith and Simon Francis were fielded as the full-backs.

Should Ake continue in the first XI, a price of 4.2 in FPL would certainly boost his appeal as one of the cheapest active defenders available.

Ryan Fraser
A 15-point return from a 36 minute appearance from the bench, Fraser turned today’s game for Bournemouth. Priced at 4.9 in the FPL, it remains to be seen if the young scot can now cement a starting role for Eddie Howe’s men to become a factor in our season.

Fraser replaced former Fantasy target Junior Stanislas who hobbled off with a knee injury, labelled as “serious” by the Cherries boss according to early reports.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Having recovered from a calf complaint, the Brazilian was shifted onto the left flank to accommodate Origi through the middle.

Firmino’s failure to play a part in any of Liverpool’s three goals proved hugely frustrating for his 18% FPL owners – a run of three successive blanks is his longest of the season.

With cash freed up by the Sergio Aguero suspension, many are looking for a way to own both Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard in the centre of the park and Firmino could well be earmarked as a potential fall guy.

Nonetheless, Liverpool’s upcoming schedule suggests that getting rid at this point still has the potential to backfire.

Liverpool’s Defence
Back-to-back clean sheets against Southampton and Sunderland had suggested that Liverpool’s rearguard may finally be worth considering.

The loss of Joel Matip proved costly, though, as Klopp’s side fell apart in the final half-hour against the Cherries.

Incredibly, Liverpool have conceded nine times in the three matches that the Cameroon international has missed – they’ve shipped the same number of goals in the 11 league matches with Matip on board.

If our faith in the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren is to be rewarded, the Reds’ summer signing needs to shrug off his ankle injury as soon as possible.

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian’s alarming slump in form shows little sign of abating – he failed to produce a single attempt against United earlier today.

Adding injury to insult, he now looks to have falling down the penalty pecking order after Leighton Baines stepped up to slot home a spot-kick and seal a 1-1 stalemate.

Second only to Philippe Coutinho for transfers out last week, Lukaku, with one goal in six now, has continued to shed owners since the weekend deadline – he faces clashes with Arsenal and Liverpool in the next three.

Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley
The pair dropped to the bench as Ronald Koeman attempted to address a dire run of form that had harvested one win in Everton’s previous eight matches.

After starting each of the first nine, Jagielka has omitted from the starting XI in two of the last five, with his role as a regular now looking in question under the Dutchman.

Barkley had started all but one of the first 13 Gameweeks but failed to earn pitch time off the bench as the Toffees looked to chase the match, with Koeman instead turning to Gerard Deulofeu and Enner Valencia as substitutes.

With the upcoming Christmas period all about ensuring our benches are well-stocked, the Toffees exodus looks set to expand beyond just Lukaku.

Owners of Seamus Coleman and Yannick Bolasie will also be mulling over their options after both picked up knocks and were forced off.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

*Captain hindsight here*, but how about that -4 going into this GW.

Kun > Kane (C) (would have had the C on Firmino without the moves)
    Kaku > Ibra
    Deeney > Austin

Missed the Deeney > Austin, but you can't get all of them right...right?
Without Sanchez in my team this move practically saved my GW.

Anybody know why the league pages on FPL sometimes show some stats and sometimes not? Stats like captain choice without clicking on all teams to check etc.

Affording Kane, Hazard, Mane, Sanchez and Ibra is harder than I thought without Aguero. Anyone else having similar issues?

I have premium defenders which could be downgraded but my only way to save money for Austin > Ibra is a Theo > Fer move and it isn't nearly enough,

Similar but with Costa and that lot. Best way I found is to gamble and downgrade your Pool mid (Firmino in my case) to Can, using Can as a 4th mid. Haven't actually done it but that seems the only realistic way.

this, but give Firmino more than 1 go and prioritize Alonso as mentioned would be my plan. Which defender... I had Holebas for his hot streak, so I'm a little biased into giving him a stay - haven't seen any Watford games lately though and they seem to be conceding , but than what are you're expectations from a 4.6er (you probably had him since 4.5 and SV is 4.6). I'd do it for Pieters or Lovren.

I don't know how comfortable you are with the Pick+Jaku combo, but if Pick loses his spot trough any set of circumstances than Lovren leaves more $ ITB (the only reason really I suggested Lovren).

          A) Can't see any of your backline keeping a shut out next week apart from maybe the mighty Pickford.

Ibra's fixtures after next week are unreal. Even with Aguero out of the picture, I think non-owners might need to get ahead of the game and start planning him in. His stats are unreal and Man Utd's midfield is a lottery for points right now. Can't see anything other than plenty of goals with such good fixtures in tandem with Utd having something to prove. They haven't even played badly so I predict a big upwards curb in form, with Ibra to profit the most.

Yeah, it's pretty ugly in defence. WBA will probably manage a goal so it makes a hit tricky.

In the same boat. Own Brunt but tempted by a Holebas > Alonso hit to field a better 11.

Head says play Brunt and hope for a Rondon header from a set-piece but Alonso could just as easily keep a CS, get an assist/goal and max bonus.

Good thing is neither Holebas or Alonso will drop/rise. I'll have a few more sleeps on it.

He's a very streaky player. I remember the pattern stretching back to last season where if he scores 1 or 2 in a game, you can bet on him to do the same the next. Once he scored 2 last week I immediately stuck the armband on him for West Ham.

Having said all that, I can't remember the last time he went 3 games in a row with big attacking returns, so being patient might work out.

Will likely use the FT on Kun > Costa for the upcoming GW.
Would it be worth using the spare cash to replace Allen in MID for a hit - up to the value of 7.7m?
Lallana, Son, Pedro, Toure( with Fernandinho out for 3?)?

Current midfield is Sanchez, Walcott, Siggy, Firmino, Hazard.

Was thinking of using my FT this week on Walcott > Mane for the West Ham game, and then if he blanks again Firmino > Eriksen next week for the Hull and Burnley games. Does this sound like a good idea?

        My current team:
        0 FT, 3.8 itb

        Foster, Pickford
        Koscielny, PVA, Stones, Amat, Holebas
        Hazard, Sanchez, Siggy, Snoddy, Firmino
        Austin, Aguero, Anichebe

I want to get Kane in but losing Austin seems wrong.
I know we shouldn't plan far ahead but if there is no big surprises, I'll do the following for GW 16:
        (1) Austin + Koscielny to Kane + Vertongan
        (2) Anichebe + Siggy to Kane + DeRoon (back to 343)

It is a very important decision for my team. Please help. Thanks!

So far, I think only Sanchez, Hazard and Costa have been consistent enough to justify 'essential' status, if there can be one.

          Coutinho too before his injury.

I agree about the Mahrez money angle and that Leicester changed tactics late last season. Players like Suarez and Ronaldo were more essential due to captaincy.

Yes, as you can see in my last post in this thread, to be considered “essential“ you either need to be a massive bargain or be a standout captain option most weeks. No one this season fits that criteria imo, even Kun when fit - which is why I dumped him last week.

I'd say its just as essential to own a Liverpool Mid as it is to own one or more of Sanchez/Hazard/Costa given Klopp's side are top of the shots, shots on target and shots inside the box tables. Its a unique scenario when an entire team's midfield are a good FPL choice. Even Can is getting in on the action!

Depending on how frequently the Utd midfield get on the score sheet in the coming weeks, Ibra could be in that club also. Kane is a no brainer. In many ways he's just as good as Aguero given he's more than £2mil cheaper.

I disagree. Liverpool are the most attacking team in the league. My argument was that, in that scenario, it is essential to own one of their players given they are most likely to gain attacking points. The only issue you have is the one you choose not sharing the spoils more than two weeks in a row. Coutinho didn't have that problem because he has set-pieces and good BPS scores so he's just the best option. We've had Pool mids in our teams since GW 1/2 and they've been smashing it all season. You could easily argue Aguero/Ibra/Hazard have had blanked too much overall. Sanchez and Costa are a different story.

My argument is that the points are spread so much that none are essential but still very good options. I think people throw the word essential around far too much without thinking about its actual meaning.

I agree that essential is the wrong term and is used very loosely around here. Of course you could get loads of points without a Liverpool mid with some well thought out and/or lucky transfers but they have been the most consistent players for reliable point returns this season, aside from Costa and Heaton, and this was always going to be the case given the stats they were putting up. Most reliable is perhaps a better term. Most obvious to own is another. Essential has become the easiest way of expressing a player who you risk falling behind without owning and I doubt many players who haven't once owned a Liverpool mid are doing very well so far.

So if you don’t own Mane/Firm it is essential to own Lallana/Wij just so you have Lvo attacking cover?? It really makes no sense imo.

You need to analyze individuals not cover. To be essential you need either represent enormous value(Mahrez/Alli last season) or be an absolute standout captain option almost every week like RVP and Saurez have been in the past.

Yes,It would be somewhat 'normal' to possess a 19 Red/19 Green (38GW) at the conclusion of the Season, with a good overall ranking. An honest continuous Audit about your strengths and mistakes in the context of the season helps.
Don't be apprehensive to have a mixture of focused Planned Gameweeks with well timed (-4point hits), especially at this time of the season. The game rewards those who plan and are not unreasonable with their expectations.

Yea. For the past 3 GW (including the current one), I've been taking hits to get the players i want in. -8, -16, -12 in the past 3. And I'll be holding onto them for the Christmas period or if anyone gets injured.

Red arrows for the last 2 weeks and saw my subs paid off finally this GW. Green arrow even with a -12 hit.

So, do the transfers that make you feel good about your team. It'll pay off in the long run.

No official update as of yet so we might have to wait for a presser and Klopp tends not to give too much away given how rude, invasive and unprofessional our media is in this country. No doubt the biggest question will be his fitness though. I'm praying he's ok. WHU at Anfield is a cracking fixture for him with his home record.

Really considering getting Eriksen in for Firmino if he fails to get returns against westham

        Following 4 fixtures

Eriksen - HUL BUR sot wat

Firmino - mid eve STO MCI

Assuming i have Kane(C) for HUL and BUR would be nice to double up alongside Eriksen. Thoughts ?

I think it is better to spread the risk, even though Firmino is not performing

Could be worth doing it even if Firm gets returns this week.

Yes, why not? I got both as part of a hit this gw and got 2 double figure hauls. Also keep an eye on Alli, hard to judge who is the better pick from him and Erik.
