Dugout Discussion

Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

Tuesday night treats us to three more matches as the festive schedule finally starts to wind up.

Bournemouth and Arsenal go head-to-head at the Vitality Stadium in the 7.45pm kick-off, with Olivier Giroud looking to score for the third successive match – the Frenchman opened 2017 in style, thanks to his scorpion kick effort at home to Palace. He starts for the third successive outing this evening.

Second in our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll, Alexis Sanchez is looking for a fifth double-figure haul on his travels, yet faces a resilient Cherries rearguard that’s served up four clean sheets in front of their own supporters. Sanchez remains on the flank as a result of Giroud’s start but has fired in 17 attempts from that position in the last two Gameweeks – more than any other player.

Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha will look to take advantage of Swansea City’s dire defence in an 8pm kick-off at Selhurst Park.

The Belgian has the chance to play his way into consideration as the schedule turns in Palace’s favour, though Zaha owners will be searching for a way out after tonight’s fixture as he’s set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Finally, Stoke City entertain Watford in the other later match as Joe Allen and Etienne Capoue go head-to-head in the battle of the budget midfielders.

With the likes of Matt Phillips and Robert Snodgrass stepping up in form over Christmas, owners of both Allen (one goal since Gameweek 8) and Capoue (a single strike since Gameweek 5), will surely be considering their options over the FA Cup weekend break.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Francis and Pieters are just okay for now I think. Lovrens performing decent as well. I'd get a Wba defender in, preferrably Bruny with those upcoming fixtures.

Yeah Pieters is doing well although Francis has a 3 game suspension now so I will need to shift, especially with Amat's position uncertain. I really want Brunt and Baines- They offer wonderful value.

So the season has been horrible. Behind quite a bit in the ML. Captain fails almost every week. Injuries all over the place.

But the silver lining: captain fixtures for the coming 2 months look absolutely mouthwatering.
Always seems good on paper, hopefully this can bring me back into it...

    1. Pierce34
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

Often with captain picks it's best to just pick a player and stick with him for a run of games - did it with Sanchez for 4 games leading up to his hat trick and now did it with Ibra and it's been working.

      1. Postman Ty
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

They're both streaky players. If you look at Sanchez' points each week last season they're almost all in groups. Ibra's been fantastically consistent lately with good fixtures so also good. Some players like Hazard can only be captained in home games. Some fixtures like Hull at home are too good to ignore for heavy hitters. Definitely not a horrible way to go about it. Cheers.

    Which option?

    A) Barry > Stanislas
    B) Lallana > Stanislas & Anichebe > Giroud
    C) Love > Ake

Got to say, the difference in mentality between Arsenal's players at the end was staggering. For some reason Giroud was celebrating like he won the league, because to him it was a point gained. But sanchez's body language told a different story, two points lost to him. Too many content players in the Arsenal squad, not enough Alexis

    1. Pierce34

      No to crouch & giroud.
Once walcott & ozil are back giroud will be back on the bench. Plus a lot of money in defence, unless you plan on playing 5-4-1 or 5-3-2

Origi to go, but which way is better ?

    A: Hazard + Origi -> Costa + Antonio
    B: Aguero + Origi -> Costa + Giroud

Feel B, then play the fixture and rotate Giroud / Costa with Lukaku / Kane. It should easily outscore Kun.

I actually prefer A. I've got a good feeling about Antonio and even though I bought Giroud before Crystal Palace I'm not convinced he'll keep his place long term.

If you downgrade kane to defoe than can upgrade both taylor & britos which makes your squad look much better

Do you have Hazard because if he blanks tomo with a 2 say that would be 38pts in his last 8 games since the 19pt score. Lallana has 58pts his last 8 games which includes 2 x 1pt scores. Lallana is still undervalued

It's pens that kept him in my team so long but at £10+ I believe he should be scoring well away from home and offer more. His points tally vs Lallan are not so different but the price!! His fixtures are also not that good.

Fixtures are fairly bad for Hazard as well (considering away games). I was dead-set on dropping him but I've kept due to other fires in the team and I'm actually fairly happy to keep for captain in the home games. I like Lallana but I can't see them getting much from this run of fixtures. Plus as you said, a pen can completely change a players score.

Decent bench? Lol it's Brunt + 3 fodders (likely even non-players). Definitely decent team though.

He rotates Snodgrass and Negredo. One 3.9 on the pine and a dead GK.
          Decent to me!

Ahh silly math error. Didn't realize the rotation. Definitely agree then, very nice!

Wish Van Dijk joined us, or may even City. Yoshida at 4.2 is amazing value.

I'm sure Puel would find a way to rotate him.

Yoshida is crap though. They won't keep too many clean sheets with him

Slightly off-topic, but am I the only one who doesn't like that the new FPL site doesn't have a Total row for the current season's stats? In past year's this was shown. It didn't matter much when only five or even ten games had been played, but after 20 games it would be nice to have a total tally of goals, assists, minutes played, bonus points, bonus points system (so you could easily work out how they are doing on a per-minute basis), etc.

Maybe it's there and I'm missing it (?)

Definitely definitely agree with you there. I always find myself trying to count total goals, then total assists without forgetting the goals number, then the number of games played without forgetting both. It's a pain. Otherwise I think its great.

I'm glad it's not just me. The old site had it, and it seems like a simple addition. I've been hoping it would get added as more games were played.

It would be helpful. I miss the full team lists for each game and the bps scores of each player in those games.

Oh, yes, that one too. I almost forgot that the detail on each game would give you each player's BPS. That was helpful. Now I have to go to that (clunky) anewfpl site and click on each game to find it. Annoying.

That's a nice start, but man that takes some work. It was nice when all of a player's total stats for the current season were on the same row. Still, thanks for this.

Thanks. That gives me totals, but sadly not the game by game bps breakdown that I've been seeking.

It would be a useful, easy improvement. And the yellows total should include all yellows (from the cups) that count.
