The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 22

A day for differentials.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley are the only two players with more than 10% ownership to hit double-digits.

Firmino was teetering on the edge prior to the today’s deadline – owned by just over 456,000 FPL managers or 10.6% – the Brazilian had shed 340,000 since Gameweek 16.

Such losses are understandable, sparked by a dismal run of paltry returns. A single goal over ten barren Gameweeks – his strike in a 4-1 victory over Stoke City – did little to stem a tide of rejection. With Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana thriving, Firmino owners were switching allegiance or looking elsewhere as rival heavy-hitters delivered.

Today’s 14-points will reverse matters, for now at least. That fifth double-figure haul for Firmino ironically arrived on a day that saw Philippe Coutinho make a return to the Liverpool starting line-up. Withdrawn on 65 minutes, his comeback was curtailed as he gave way to allow his compatriot to take centre-stage.

While his two goals were not enough to save Liverpool from defeat, Firmino’s own Fantasy stock is revived, just as thousands were making or considering the move for his Brazilian team-mate.

But Coutinho’s early withdrawal has already proved enough to give some early adopters the jitters. Meanwhile, after suffering a third successive blank, Lallana has now returned just a single goal and an assist in six starts.

Based on early transfer activity, both are facing ownership losses over the extended gap to Gameweek 23, with this shifting affection from one Liverpool asset to another typical of behaviour this season.

Two prolonged spells of form from Coutinho’s and Lallana have come close to resolving the argument but, in truth, we look unlikely to ever settle on one of Klopp’s midfield as a dependable “solution”.

Perhaps the key question should be whether we should overlook them altogether.

Two draws and a defeat has stalled the Liverpool title bid, while over the last four Gameweeks, their attacking numbers are settled in mid-table. They face Chelsea next.

Sadio Mane’s absence appears to be a key factor and, arguably, until his return, we should reserve judgement, regardless of Firmino’s flurry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Thoughts? 1FT + .1ITB
    Foster (Grant)
    Baines Pieters McAuley (Friend Amat)
    Hazard Eriksen Sanchez Phillips Stanislas
    Lukaku Ibra (Negredo)

Downgrade Negredo to Crouch and upgrade Stanislas?

Crouch fixtures not so great, and Stoke just spent a lot of cash on Berahino. And why chuck Stanislas when he's got Palace next?

So you think just save? Seems like a waste to have a 6.2 in Negredo on the bench

I'd wait until seeing results of Sunday's game, but I'd look at upgrading Hazard to Alli, which frees up cash.

Tom Carroll vs Tom Davis? 2fts to burn.

Tom Davis has the fixtures, more of a threat, better chance of price rises, no bank gws, but treat from Gueye, Barry and Schneiderlin.

Tom Carroll is more nailed and 0.1m cheaper.

Worth a watch I guess but it's still only 1 game and it's Swansea after all. sounds like being too clever in getting a non important differential at this point. Again, it's 90 minutes.

Lowly Swansea on bad run of fixtures - not interested in Swansea players.
One good game because Pool underestimated them. We'll see if it was a one game new manager bounce.

Not sure what "sell without pressing your transfer button" means but I'm dissapointed in myself for not taking 'ownership' of the situation.
Hindsight is great, It's not like jevan has the potential output of someone like McAuley, Brunt, Coleman, Baines, Rose and Walker.
The investment was warrented, my defensive returns have been consistently poor-this was an opportunity to upgrade based on fact-I missed the boat for now.

Baines to Coleman on a free?

Better differential and more of an attacking threat aside from penalties it seems? Coleman also had the potential to go up £0.2m before the next deadline.

Got myself into a rut swapping Coutinho and Firmino earlier in the season, but this was more to get in on the price changes and just the fact I prefer Coleman as a player. Wish I'd done it before posting on here, would have got in on the price change. I have no need to use my transfers aside from injuries and suspensions in the coming weeks so it was never going to come back and cost me -4. Although things could easily change.

Pick any of them, Walker vs Rose debate will go on till season ends. Both will get attacking returns every now and then

I got Walker since GW1, but if buying today I'd get Rose. Reason being that Walker has accumulated so many owners and price rises that an injury will lose you a ton of money. Rose is much closer to his starting price, so I'd consider him safer (from a $ point of view)

Long term, which options would you prefer:

    A) Baines + 8.4 mid (Siggy, Pedro, Barkley, etc) + Kane
    B) Cedric (rotated with other defs) + Alli + Costa

    Rest of the team is:
    Jakup, Grant
    _____, Friend, McAuley, Alonso, Amat
_____, Sanchez, Eriksen, Phillips, De Roon
    _____, Lukaku, Ibra

If only. But no, that's not possible unfortunately.

          How? 😮

          Costa is something like 10.5
          Kane is around 11.1

Alli is 8.7 I guess, so should be possible? Or you had Costa from start?

Basically, I have 24.1 to spend.

            Baines (5.6) + Sigurdsson (7.2) + Kane (11.1) = 23.9
            Cedric (4.8) + Alli (8.7) + Costa (10.3) = 23.8

            Baines (5.6) + Alli (8.7) + Costa (10.3) = 24.6

I think Baines, 8.4m mid, Kane would be better

Cheers! Leaning that way too. Deciding between Siggy, Barkley and maybe Pedro now!

Sorry, my mistake - not sure where I got 8.4 mid from, that's what was causing the confusion.

So I just used 1 of my 2ft's & went Lovren out & Coleman in leaving 2.5itb

    Foster (Valdes)
    Alonso, Rose, Coleman, Jones (Pieters)
Sanchez (c), Alli, Phillips, Stanislas (Lallana)
    Ibra, Giroud (Defoe)

I'm tempted to use my 2nd ft to buy Heaton = Valdes out & Heaton.
I will do so at the end of the week but Heaton at home v Leicester will probably result in a cs, save points & 3baps for him.

    Thoughts & thanks.

Boro have a chance of CS at home to WBA but if you can afford the Heaton upgrade, may as well.

Over next few weeks, Valdes has better fixtures

Does a cheeky Lanzini for Stanislas punt seem profitable, form trumps fixtures at times, especially when you're going up against a defence as leaky as City's, Stanislas was poor be Hull bar the peno and blanked vs Watford of all teams, thoughts?

That was always going to happen with Stanislas, hit and miss. If I recall, Bourne's fixtures are fine, arent they?

Not going to do this right now but is Hazard and Aguero -> De Bruyne and Hazard an alright move, or is it sideways?

Hazard to Hazard is height of sideways 😛

Nah, stick with them until you can shift the balance around to get a decent upgrade imo.

If you were to go 532, which 5 defenders would you choose?

I have Rose/Baines/Brunt. Alonso would probably be the 4th. Not too sure on the 5th...

Question...why would you want to go 5-3-2? All great options though, but you'd be spending so much in defence...

But anyway, I'll bite. Probably get Chambers for the 5th?

Just got me thinking with all these wing backs basically pushing just as much as attackers. Have Chambers as my 4th at the mo.

Azpi/Coleman/McAuley/Rose? Double up is not a bad idea. Alternatively, you can go for Bellerin/Kosc or some cheapie like Pieters/Chambers

I wouldn't go 5-3-2. No flexibility to bench for poor fixtures.

      Just a rough line up:-

      Heaton
      Bellerin/Alonso/Rose/Baines/Brunt
      Sanchez/Alli/Eriksen
      Ibra/Costa

      Pickford/Phillips/Barnes/de Roon

Bellerin could be any other defender, maybe Eriksen to Firmino and Bellerin to Walker?

Got a whopping 25 points today with 3 players to go. Amazing really.
