Captain Poll – Gameweek 28

Due to the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place this weekend, our Gameweek 28 captain poll selection is limited to players from just eight teams.

Among this reduced group, assets from Liverpool and Everton, who both have favourable home ties, are expected to dominate.

It would be no surprise to see Romelu Lukaku (10.0) at the summit after the Belgian struck his 18th goal of the season against Spurs to become Everton’s most prolific Premier League scorer.

The Golden Boot contender, who is just one shy of current leader Harry Kane, collides with a West Brom defence that boasts a single clean sheet on the road and has shipped eight over their last four away outings.

With a goal and two assists in his last quartet of matches, Ross Barkley (7.1) offers a cheaper armband option amongst Ronald Koeman’s ranks. So, too, does Seamus Coleman (6.0), for those willing to take a risk on captaining a defender.

The right back’s blank against Spurs was the first time since Gameweek 19 that he has failed to deliver either defensive or attacking returns. This consistency is likely to mean he overshadows Leighton Baines (5.7), despite the latter’s spot-kick duties.

Burnley’s visit to Anfield will likely ensure that Liverpool’s midfield provides Lukaku’s main competition.

Sadio Mane’s (9.4) goal and assist at home to Arsenal on Saturday evening adds to an impressive record in front of his own fans – only Chelsea’s Eden Hazard can match the Senegal international’s eight home goals among FPL midfielders.

Seven strikes on home turf makes Roberto Firmino (8.4), who also scored and assisted against the Gunners, another strong option. Meanwhile, Philippe Coutinho’s (8.2) four close range efforts on Saturday, more than any other Reds player, makes him another to consider. The Brazilian has recorded six attempts on goal in both his previous two Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Swansea City’s continued renaissance under Paul Clement keeps their players in the frame for the captaincy when they drop in on Hull City this weekend.

With five goals in the Clement era, Fernando Llorente (6.4) is set to attract votes, along with set-piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.6). The Icelander has three strikes and five assists since the new manager took the helm, returning points in seven of his last eight Gameweek starts.

Llorente, who scored a fourth brace of the season against Burnley at the weekend, is currently the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 28, with more than 56,000 new owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Hull, under their new manager Marco Silva, are also undergoing something of a recovery, having beaten Liverpool and drawn against Manchester United since the Portuguese took charge ahead of Gameweek 21. However, with nine goals conceded over that time, the fragility of the Tigers defence is still evident.

West Ham’s visit to Bournemouth looks ripe for goals and, as a result, offers a raft of alternative captaincy candidates.

Over their last six matches, the Cherries have conceded 15 goals and failed to register a clean sheet, while the Hammers have been similarly poor, claiming a solitary clean sheet and shipping nine goals.

For Eddie Howe’s men, Josh King (5.4) looks to be the most secure route to points. The first choice penalty taker in the absence of long-term injury victim Callum Wilson, the Norwegian has scored an impressive five times in his last six Gameweeks – with a mere 3% ownership, he looks an intriguing differential candidate for this reduced Gameweek.

Among the most likely Hammers’ captaincy candidates are Andy Carroll (6.2), should he have recovered from a groin injury ahead of tonight’s clash with Chelsea at the London Stadium.

Michail Antonio (6.9), who is suspended for tonight’s Blues encounter and sits in 8.3% of FPL teams, is another valid option: he has scored eight goals and assisted another seven this term.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I'd like to bring in Coleman for a hit this week (bringing in Lukaku for sure).

Current defence - Funes Mori, Alonso, Brunt, Mawson, Holebas.

Now the obvious person to get rid of is Holebas given he's a bit of a yellow card magnet and Watford don't keep many clean sheets....BUT - They have Sunderland, West Brom and Swansea at home in the 5 games after GW28. Additionally, Sunderland and West Brom at home are in GWs 30 and 31 when Everton have their tougher fixtures over next 6 - i.e I might want to bench Funes Mori.

Considering WBA look a bit rubbish and fixtures are going downhill is it worth cashing in on Chris Brunt instead?

I know it's sacrilege to even consider taking out a GW28 player when I can't field 11 as it is but is Coleman -4 a better option than Brunt this week? Especially when you take into account how good Everton's fixtures are over next 6.

Nah, I'd lose Holebas or Mawson. Neither teams look likely of many cleanies to me. I have Brunt also and looking to shift in the next few weeks, but for this week, we need starters.

I think bringing Coleman in is wise, but I'd use this opportunity to ditch Holebas tbh.

You've said in the past that at their prices you'd happily bench Brunt and Mori when required so you can just bench Brunt most games until you need to make the next defender transfer for a DGW player such as Valencia for example.

It also gives you an extra player in GW28 with the potential to get points.

I am happy to bench but Everton over 30/31 isn't ideal - Holebas has some nice fixtures to cover it.

It does seem silly to dump Brunt of course. I'll take a look to see who else looks good over 30/31 and beyond and maybe consider a Brunt transfer a little later. Just means an added transfer later on that's all.

Consider that Coleman fixtures stiffen up after 29 as well so you're looking at technically a -8. I would say hold firm on Brunt and look to replace him with someone who you'd actually want in the longer term whose fixtures are better.

Watford are crap defensively no matter the opposition. I've got this exact same predicament and I'm shipping Holebas as you just know he will get a 0 or 1 pointer in those 'good' fixtures.

Imagine the scenes on here if Yaya doesn't play mid week and then Aguero misses a pen...

Or Ageuro doesn't play and Yaya misses a pen?

Has anyone made a calculated prediction on future double gameweeks yet? Are we looking at the end of season time or any possible before that?

Be some before that as well but not sure why. I've got a feeling Ars / Sot will be next in 32 or 33 but don't quote me on that.

How many of your teams are so bad that you have basically given up hope on gw 28?

          I don't expect much from GW28.
Even right 6 can bring you more than 11.

So how does this look for GW28? Any changes I need to make?

        Mawson McAuley Coleman Fonte
        Siggy Snoddy Mane Fletcher
        Lukaku Llorente

Also, I'm confused about who to captain out of the above:
        1. Llorente
        2. Mane
        3. Lukaku
        4. Coleman?

        Any help would be appreciated

Not 4. Hull have been decent at home too so maybe not 1.
Mane or Lukaku I can't decide either.

Seems like the safe bet to me as well

However, would you rather go with Mane given the home game if you're chasing? I am very aware of how bad Liv can be against weaker teams, but Burnley are equally bad away from home so far

The Liverpool mid point sharing is one reason I prefer Lukaku, and like you said Liverpool struggling against weaker team.

If Ibra is banned I might get Costa in for him, Lukaku to Gabiadinni in gw 30 giving me Kane, Costa, Gabby frontline.

All 3 will have doubles. Too risky to go Withou Kun/Ibra though?

No I think Kun/Ibra are the least desirable to own out of the big hitters.

        Is Ibra/Phillips to Llorente/Mane (-4) a no brainer?

Is phillips fit? Other option is Eriksen instead out for Mane, with a view to probably getting Kane in for Aguero from 29 onwards. Will give me 9 players (Heaton/Phillips permitting) for this weekend

Anything worth a hit for GW28? Have 8 but includes doubts Phillips & A.Carroll

        Foster
        Brunt / Coleman
        Mane / Siggy / Phillips*
        Lukaku / Carroll*

        Pickford / Alonso / Chambers / Pieters / Eriksen / Sterling / Aguero - 1.0 ITB

Considering Chambers > F.Mori/Mawson/Olsson as a long term move

Firmino/Coutinho/Llorente/King are other options I'm considering

        Sterling to Cou/Firmino
        Phillips to Antonio
Holgate to Coleman for a -8

        Worth it ?
