The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just a thought but could Milner play right back this year?
    I have never rated Clyne.

Literally no chance of that happening. Klopp would play Alexander-Arnold if he didn't have Clyne.

    Foster / Myhill
    Daniels - Trippier - Cedric - Kolasinac – (Rosenior)
de Bruyne - Willian - Coutinho – (RLC - Carrol)
    Kane - Lukaku – Austin

    0.5 itb. Any suggestions? 🙂
WIll monitor Austin ofc. May swap him for Gayle / Deeney or some max 7 fwd.

Aren't you concerned Klopp may rotate/rest his Coutinhos due to Champs League playoffs?

Kane is surely better option in long term but I can see Kun matching Kane*s points in first 5 gws and with that 1M saved I'm able to have Willian instead of Ritchie

Yeah, that may be true. I have thought of it, but landed on Kane from the go. Agueros price might rice rapidly though, given his low ownership (9.1%) and his history, so I like the idea.

We've only really played one proper game and he played out on the left with Sam Gallagher replacing Austin up top when he came on but are out in France now so will keep an eye on games and let you know. I have Austin in my team because I think he will start up top. Gabbi on left/right with Boufal/Redmond in other position and Tadic/Gabbi/Boufal in the hole. When Austin comes off either Gabbi will move up top or possibly Gallagher might come on as like for like swap.

Do you see many cheap strikers (7.0m or below) that you can see becoming major bandwagons? Or will most of the bargains emerge in midfield?

If the latter, does this suggest we go heavy on forwards?

    1. S.Kuqi
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Chicarito could first big bandwagon but is probably 7.5. Besides him maybe Gayle with those fixtures.

Can't see much bargain options in midfield section. There isn't any tempting options under 7.0 atleast for now

      1. Piggs Boson

          • 11 Years

For that reason I'm considering having someone like Mili or Carroll as my 4th mid to afford one extra heavy hitter.

      2. S.Kuqi
        • 11 Years

but to answer your question I think this season is all about heavy hitters upfront. Considering starting with three heavy striker and wait when bargains in midfield section appers.

I think you need 3 premium strikers this season. And I think you'll need to jump on and off them as they hit form.

I think there are a few potentials in midfield and I'm gambling on a few at the start.

      Ramsey
      Mhiki
Pogba but needs a DM signing
Willian, probably at risk when Haz is back but hopefully will make himself hard to drop
      Fab, more dodgy gametime though

And I have a "feeling" about Ince that it almost certainly a mistake. Still though..Incey isn't it?

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

I agree, there seem to be a number of hopefuls in midfield, particularly at 7.0m

Zaha is another I think could be outstanding value this season.
Then of course Willian at the start, Ramsey, Pogba/Mky/Martial etc...

Ritchie or Ince could emerge as prospects, as could Redmond.

Zaha always lets me down but I agree that dispassionately he is a good option at that price.

I shouldn't take it so personally. I let it go though, I remember at the end of the season before last swearing I would never, ever have Lukaku in my team again. Took until about week 10 of last year 😉

            😀

De Boer seems keen to build the team around him. Last season's pts total was quite impressive, and that will surely improve this year!

If the Sig leaves I'm seriously considering starting Carroll as my 4th mid. I will have to sell a 7.0m for a 4.5m for the bench but this cash enables an upgrade on Firmino. Willian could go and have a Morata for example.

RLC rotates nicely with Carroll... could be a goer.

    5. HurriKane

Below 7m there there are very few striker options. on the other hand in midfeild there are plenty of genuine options.

Genuine 7m below options // Gayle Austin J-Rod

Genuine 7m below midfeilders // Willian Ramsey Zaha Lanzini Tadic Phillips Stanislas Ince Knockert Ritchie

      Thats my opinion. Agree?

        Completely agree 🙂

It's so nice having a cheap striker to balance the two big hitters, it's usually a good strategy. But we may need to adapt this season. They seem to have increased the prices on promoted strikers...

Midfield is the place for bargains this year imo.

      Spot on.

I always go 3-4-3 and will continue, but I've been on Lukaku Kane Lacazette for a while and can only see swapping one for another 7.0m+ striker, which is unusual.

I'm not looking at Morata or Rooney from the start but both could be interesting. I'm waiting for the City lineup to become a bit clearer. I think Deeney is a good option and Javier should do well when West Ham's fixtures turn.

With Southampton and Defoe that already makes half the sides. 3-4-3 looks the only way to go. And I think starting with three up top makes sense, then downgrade as a mid-price striker starts to hit form.

I know he's not popular here, but Mounie has good fixtures to start with, and did score very often in a poor team last season. He's in my team.

Given the early fixtures it will just take one of the Southampton boys (Austin or Gabbi) to get off the mark early to become bandwagons

I see that most of RMT to be without sanchez, any particular reason why ?
Simply because of him potentially leaving for another club ? Wenger will not let him leave till the end of contract.

      Boot Pog, Redmond and J-rod.

Replace with Willian, Carroll and Jesus.

      Rating: 4/10.

Swap Cahill for Alonso whilst you are at it.

I think you've spent too much at the back, it's hurt your frontline.

I'm personally a fan of cheap 4.5m keepers. Lots of save pts, so they become good value.

Surprised that the trend is to move away from KDB and towards Sane. He costs less but I think KDB is more likely to start and finished the season in such a strong fashion.

Virtually untouched for a week...always a good sign! Switched Redmond & Pedro for Ramsey & Willian last night. Tempted to swap Firmino for Morata though?! Tricky to fund it without going Puncheon.. 🙁

IF Sanchez leaves, it's between Iwobi, Laca & Walcott for a central support spot with Gru likely to start up top.

I'd shave a million from the keepers, and change the two 5.0m defenders to a 4.5m rotation over the last slot.

That would give an extra 2.0m to bolster the midfield.

Meh i've gone for value picks in mid with undervalued def/keepers.

Current mid has a really good rotation cycle so don't think i need 2ml - 8.0 isn't much of a midfielder anyway

3.0 gives 9.0 which has decent options but then i'd have a shabby defence! I mainly wrote the comment to get this sort of response from the template club :p

Trippier and Cedric playing every game is not shabby! Then you have three 4.5m defenders to choose every week for the last slot. I call that strong! 🙂

And I'll never be in that club, thank you! 😀

After yesterdays advice, I have added a second big hitter up front.

    Begovic

    Cedric Trippier Lindy

    Alli Willian Salah Zaha

    Austin Lukaku Lacazette

    (Foster, Francis, RLC, Mee)

    Thoughts?

Maybe we're all overthinking the Lindelof situation. Mourinho has spent £35m on a new defender because Jones & Smalling clearly aren't up to it despite the number of chances they've been given.

By all accounts he did have a very poor game the other night, but from memory, Mourinho prefers to have a settled back four and will be going all out for the league this year.

I think (and hope!) that we're over analysing the situation and it could backfire on us bigtime. Those fixtures!

Fixtures are great but the minute they concede he's getting max. 2 points because I doubt he'll offer anything other than clean sheet potential. When you can get attacking defenders like Trippier & Bertrand for the same price I fail to see the attraction.

2nd draft and I'm liking this one:
    Foster (Elliot)
    Cedric - Lindelof - Trippier (Dunk 4.0)
Willian - Ali - Salah - RLC (Carrol)
Lacazette - Lukaku - Gabriel Jesus

Could swap Gabriel Jesus and Ali -> Kane and Sane but then id have to downgrade Lindelof or Trippier to another 4.5
