The Numbers Game – Watford

Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

    I am contemplating whether Kane + KDB > Alli + Jesus + 2.5?

    2.5 could be used to upgrade willian to salah once hazard returns. Or strengthen defence like below..

    It's such a big decision, given the price tags,
    I'm favouring one of the City forwards, but I would feel like such a goose if Kane gets a brace in GW1........

    What do we make if Jesus becomes essential?
    Would require several transfers to get him in for the likes of Firmino/Gabbiadini etc.
    Don't think we would drop Kane/Lukaku immediately.

      I wouldnt mind dropping lukaku for jesus if he becomes a definite 90 mins player for Man City. Man city is a lot more attacking and will definitely score more over the course of the season than Man Utd

      If he does become essential, you would only be able to fit him in within a 3 week trade without taking hits (obviously depending the value of your 3rd striker you commened with). Otherwise, take the fat hit if you dare haha

    Talked to one of the greatest at this game and was recommended to find to rotating keepers at 5.0 4.5.

      not a bad shout.

      I was experimenting with Henessy and Elliot, which starts with HUD, hud, when switching Henessy to Hart. this gives an excellent run till GW8 or so

      You do make a good point. Just looked at the fixtures as well. If I changed my DDG / Elliot to Heaton / Foster.. would it be essential to have a MUNU defender? I currently have Daniels / Kolasinac / Cedric as the main 3

      I do like the sound of this strategy- I just wonder, is this strategy best used at the start of the season, or mid-way through once we have been able to build on team value?

      At the start every 0.5m is precious as we choose those who are tried and tested... But later on in the season, there will be the reliable budget options which will enable you to spend more on your keepers (i.e for the double game weeks)...

      For me, 8.5m on keepers at the start of the season enables so much more flexibility, and I wouldn't know where to find the extra 1m to upgrade to a 9.5m combo!

      Would be a very nice idea though! 🙂

          I'm going for Foster/Myhill.... Cheap and no risk of benching the wrong keeper... Boring, I know! :p

      Depends.. you could either Austin + Dawson or Abraham + Walker. I would probably Abraham + Walker if you really really wanted Walker. Like you said, Austin is a gamble especially with Gabi in line as well

    If I was wanting a 6.5 striker Rondon would be my choice. He hasn't scored the goals expected, but he has easy fixtures, will start, scored 117pts last season and I'd expect the easy early fixtures to provide a boost to productivity. In the meantime it allows an assessment of who could be the one to take his place.

    Which combination would you prefer: Firminio+Willian or Eriksen+6m striker. Have Kane and no other Liverpool or Chelsea players.
