Fixtures

Frisking The Fixtures – Gameweek 1 – The Weak

Having assessed those sides that we consider to have the strongest schedules over the opening six Gameweeks, we now focus on the teams who are destined to be largely ignored in our initial line-ups.

As part of the analysis, we also pay some attention to the “turning point” when the fixtures inevitably improve and offer our perspective on their change of prospects.

Everton

(STO mci che TOT mun BOU)

The Prospects – Goals
The Toffees were the sixth highest scorers last season, netting 62 times, but the 25-goal Romelu Lukaku will obviously be a huge miss this time around.

Ronald Koeman’s men could barely face a tougher start to the campaign from an attacking perspective.

They meet with the four strongest defences (mci che TOT mun) from last season in terms of goals conceded, with three of those matches on the road.

The home meetings with Stoke City and Bournemouth provide a little respite, with the Cherries vulnerable on their travels last term – conceding an average of two goals per match.

The Prospects – Clean Sheets
After recording a respectable 13 shutouts in 2016/17, the Everton backline should also be boosted by the arrivals of Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane.

But coming up against the three top-scoring teams from the previous campaign in Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City, clean sheets will likely be in short supply.

Additionally, Manchester United ranked second for total shots in home matches last season, with 338, while Bournemouth impressively finished fourth for big chances created away from home.

Only the opening weekend clash against Stoke City offers real hope of defensive returns.

The Turning Point
The Bournemouth match in Gameweek 6 marks the start of a hugely favourable run of fixtures for the Toffees, who avoid all of last season’s top six until the Merseyside derby in Gameweek 16.

Verdict
Pickford, Keane, Leighton Baines and Wayne Rooney are all found in over 10% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads, but the brutal run of fixtures between Gameweeks 2- 5 means that they’re unlikely to deliver significant Fantasy returns during this period.

However, we clearly need to revisit Everton’s prospects from Gameweek 6.

Stoke City

(eve ARS wba MUN new CHE)

The Prospects – Goals
The Potters found goals hard to come by last season, recording just 41, while the loss of Marko Arnautovic to West Ham United will come as a major blow.

Forthcoming opponents Chelsea and Man United led the way for the fewest goals conceded on the road and the most clean sheets in away matches last season, while Arsenal were stronger at the back after shifting to a three-man defence.

Goals could also be limited on Stoke’s travels.

Everton were joint-third for the fewest conceded at home last season with just 16, while West Bromwich Albion only allowed 22, and Newcastle United shipped 23 goals in 23 league matches at St James’ Park in the Championship.

The Prospects – Clean Sheets
Mark Hughes’ side did record a more than respectable 11 shutouts last term, although they still conceded 56 goals.

However, Chelsea and Man United were ranked in the top five away sides for total attempts, while Arsenal sat fifth for shots inside the box and second for big chances on the road.

Everton, meanwhile, tallied an impressive 42 goals at Goodison Park last term, and only one team managed more home goals than Newcastle’s 49 in the Championship.

A trip to West Brom looks the only real prospect for defensive returns but could also prove tricky – the Baggies scored more home goals than Man United in 2016/17.

The Turning Point
A home meeting with Bournemouth in Gameweek 9 signals the start of a more favourable run for the Potters, who then face Watford, Leicester, Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace over the following four Gameweeks.

Verdict
Joe Allen (5.2%) is currently the most owned Stoke player in FPL, but the Wales international should probably be avoided with far stronger budget midfield options available. Meanwhile, question marks remain over Saido Berahino as a source of goals.

Clean sheets will surely be scarce, so Jack Butland holds little appeal during this stretch. However, this spell at least gives us time to assess whether Hughes’ backline can offer us a viable 4.5 option to cover a more favourable run of opponents.

Leicester City

(ars BHA mun CHE hud LIV)

The Prospects – Goals
The 2015/16 champions scored a modest 48 goals last season, although the arrival of Kelechi Iheanacho should boost the prospects of the Leicester attack once he’s settled.

Craig Shakespeare’s side endure a pretty miserable start to the campaign though, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United among the top four teams to allow the fewest shots from inside the box last season.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will be hard to break down at the Emirates on day one. The Gunners registered nine clean sheets last season at home last season – second only to Spurs (12).

The matches against Brighton and Huddersfield Town provide some room for optimism, although the Seagulls could also prove to be stubborn opponents – they totaled an impressive 21 clean sheets last term.

The Prospects – Clean Sheets
The Foxes only managed nine shutouts last term, with seven of those arriving at the King Power Stadium.

Based on those numbers, and given that Arsenal and Man United ranked third and sixth for big chances created in home matches, the opportunity for defensive points in those matches appears slim.

The Liverpool fixture also looks very difficult: the Reds had more shots (308) in away matches than any other side, while Chelsea were third for close-range efforts (165) on the road.

On the plus side, Brighton did only net 28 times in their 23 away trips last season, while Huddersfield scored just 34 goals in their 23 home matches in 2016/17.

The Turning Point
The Foxes’ fixture list eases considerably from Gameweek 7 onwards, with home clashes against Spurs and Chelsea the only tough tests right up until Gameweek 19.

Verdict
The 5.6%-owned Danny Simpson is currently the most popular Leicester player and, as a rotation option, he could still be a viable option.

But Jamie Vardy may struggle to provide the attacking points expected from an 8.5-priced forward during the opening month, with Riyad Mahrez certainly best avoided given the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.

Iheanacho will likely turn out to be our main point of interest and this opening period will act as a handy barometer of his prospects as a mid-price attacking option.

Also be wary of…

Burnley
Sean Dyche’s men face a treacherous time of it away from Turf Moor, with trips to Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool over the first five Gameweeks.

This makes it unlikely that we’ll be prepared to back any Clarets attacker – particularly given the sudden departure of Andre Gray.

However, members of their backline – the reliable Ben Mee in particular – are still very viable rotation options given their hugely favourable home fixtures (WBA CRY HUD NEW SWA).

Chelsea
Antonio Conte’s champions attempt to shake off indifferent pre-season form with a plum home fixture against Burnley, but then face both Spurs and Arsenal over the first six Gameweeks.

The other three matches on the current slate (EVE lei stk) will also provide tests, meaning that Fantasy managers should show caution when assessing Blues assets alongside premium priced rivals.

Investors in Marcos Alonso may have to turn to attacking points for returns over these six, while the merits of looking to Willian and Cesc Fabregas as midfield solutions could rely on an early return against the Clarets on Saturday.

West Ham United
Faced with three successive away fixtures (mun sot new) to start the season, Slaven Bilic’s side are at an immediate disadvantage.

There’s also a difficult visit from Spurs in Gameweek 6 to contend with, although a home meeting with Huddersfield and a trip to West Brom do provide some upside.

Gameweek 7 appears to be the tipping point and, at that stage, we should have gained a full appraisal of the Hammers’ assets with Javier Hernandez settled and hopefully in form as a mid-price option in attack.

    Nearly settled on this:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Ake Davies Stephens (Mee 4m)
    KDB Zaha Mane Fraser (Carroll)
    Lukaku Kane Gabbiadini

Anything missing (can’t have all the big hitters – I’ve got 4)?

    And really torn on this:

    A. Mane Gabbi Foster

    B. Firminho Fabregas DDG

I'd go for B; it gives you a United backline option, Firmino *might* be on pens and Fabregas will step up without Hazard there. Good luck!

In order of regularity of postings, here are the initial price reactions on FFScout over the first few pages when the game launched over 29 days ago and a comparison to follow that considers how we view these options now.

Aguero at 11.5 was considered massively underpriced with many mentions saying he could easily have been 12-12.5. --> Now we consider him as the second best forward pick of that team but has anything changed about his place since a month ago? Jesus has always been more flexible position-wise but Aguero is a proven prem star who could well punish us at that once-considered tantalizing price.

Kane was also considered underpriced as many believed he'd come in at 13.0-13.5 after consecutive golden boots - Nowadays many are questioning if going without is a a viable option but hardly anything has changed about the striker except a rested preseason that should change our minds.

Monreal, Trippier, and Keane were considered intriguing 5.5 defenders from the off. In the case of the former two, if they were nailed that would put them straight into every side. Monreal looks the part now and Trippier certainly did until his unfortunate injury. Does Monreal present an overlooked bargain? Keane was considered overpriced and with such poor opening fixtures many were cursing FPL towers. By now many have reckoned with his price but the fixtures are still off-putting in the short term

Cheap defenders, as they do now, offered very few interesting options upon the game's release. Stankovic & Rosenior were considered possible 4.0 starters but we know now that at that price the safest bet is to just stick with someone with low ownership and hope a player does emerge. Yedlin was mentioned often and considered by many a very viable 4.5 defender for his attacking threat but that wagon may have since been derailed with the possibility of injury and rotation making him one for our watchlists. Naughton was once thought to have won his place and would make a mockery of his pricetag but that price is one many consider to plummet due to his high ownership level.

Foster was the standout keeper with many noticing quickly he presented a cheap route into the Pulis-led defense yet the actual defenders were initially shunned on this site as 5.0 for players like Dawson and Evans seemed 0.5 too high for a team that struggled and kept just 6 cleansheets. Dawson has reemerged on our radar for his goal threat but many are considering steering clear of WBA players entirely as they've looked toothless in preseason. Foster may have his work cut out for him at any rate.

Though Foster was immediately thrust into the template, Begovic was also considered a decent pick if he could nail himself a spot and that same logic applies today. With Bego appearing more likely now than then to be the #1 Keeper, perhaps he should be featured in more of our teams early doors. Myhill and Elliot were considered the 4.0s of choice from the off with Elliot being pinpointed as a potential starter early on.

In midfield many were already on the prowl for cut-price option to free up cash for big hitters. Tadic, Carroll, Loftus-Cheek, Milivojevic, Phillips, and Mkhitaryan were all mentioned several times as players who could make a mockery of their pricetags (or in Tadic's case do just enough to make posters on here no longer hate him). Mili still presents very good value in his price bracket but as for the truly cheap mids it has been Carroll and then many RLC who have snuck their way into most teams for the value they bring. Tadic and Phillips each have fallen out of favor on here in light of other options from their teams: JRod and JWP. Mkhitaryan could still well embarrass that 8.0 pricetag as several posters suggested, his solid preseason only increased interest and investment over the past month.
Players like Stanislas and Ozil were two that many complained about for being over priced, Stanislas seems to have shed that reputation as many have drooled at his underlying stats and eagerly await his return this season.

Many attempted to identify reliable mid-priced forwards as Rooney's name popped up several times despite his age and poor fixtures. Defoe looked a very reliable option with a reasonable pricetag as well. Players like Deeney and Iheanacho were considered watchlist stars if they came into a better situation than their one a month ago. Rooney and Defoe may have just aged a month since the game's release but fixtures for Rooney and a slight knock to Defoe appear to have but each off our radar. Don't be surprised if either hits a purple patch this season, this community has already been intrigued once. Iheanacho has since found his better situation at Leicester and I reckon will provide many great value once the fixtures turn in their favor. The opposite could be said for Deeney as Andre Gray's signing should only further put off investment.

Are there any you feel i've missed that you remember feeling excited or disappointed by when they game dropped that you since have felt validated or betrayed by their preseason form or other factors?

I think it's important to remember where we all started from when we began team selection. The last week or so is when we get worried and began excessively tinkering. There is a reason why you have the players that you have and one months of constant FPL thought can only change that so much.
Preseason helps identify certain things but a lot of what we, as a community, thought less than a month ago still rings true.

I had a quick tinker with my team once the game was launched, but basically left it until the start of this week and just read the odd article on here over summer. I needed that period of relaxation before the season starts, otherwise I'd have gone mad. Already chopped and changed so much over the past few days; if I'd been doing that for the past month I'd be dreading the start of the season. I'll be glad when it starts to be honest, whether the team I've got is good or not!

The posts and articles on this site are fantastic, but no one person can tell you the right or wrong answer, and there's no one correct team. They can inform your choices, but go with your instinct if you're unsure!

As for a specific player, Willian was first on my team sheet when I saw he was £7m and Hazard wasn't back untl at least September. Then I watched the Community Shield, plus I don't think all is right with Chelsea.

So the deadline for draft waivers will be in 2 hours. Does anyone know if we will know the result of the waiver process right after that so we can start transferring Free Agents immediately as well?

Given Liverpools hectic schedule is it a bit risky to have both Salah and Firmino? Is one enough?

Do we think Tammy will still get regular minutes when Llorente is back in GW2?

Do you think Ayew is a better pick than Tammy then?

Tammy been good in pre season and he must have had some assurances over playing time to make the move to Swansea in the first place. Looks much more potent than Ayew, why would Ayew get the nod?
