The Numbers Game – West Ham United

We draw the curtain on our summer series of team-by-team analysis articles for members by dropping in on West Ham United.

Initially, we assess the performance levels on a team basis in an attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then dig deeper into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of Friday’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

We’ll also highlight the Hammers’ displays in light of Dimitri Payet’s decision to return to former club Marseille midway through the campaign, in order to assess the impact of the Frenchman’s departure.

The Hammers thrived in Payet’s only full season at the club in 2015/16. He pulled the strings as they claimed seventh position, scoring 65 times (a tally bettered by only three other sides) and earning 62 points.

But last season was a pale imitation of that campaign. With Payet leaving the club midway through the campaign, Slaven Bilic’s men netted on just 47 occasions and limped home in eleventh position on 45 points – just five clear of seventeenth placed Burnley.

          He offers no attacking threat at all. Every time it goes down that side he goes back. Also he is pretty terrible in defence. An all round bad pick if you ask me, go for the new lad Lejeune, looks a player

      Good side, but I'd keep kaku, not having him could really hurt you. I see you've gone for mane though, im tempted to get him in over alli for liverpool attacking coverage. Thoughts?

        I think Mane is the best Liverpool asset (def worth 0.5 over Salah) and I have Kane, so don't think I need Alli (silly logic I know)...

        On a sole points basis, I think Mane has the edge over the season and can be very explosive! 50-50 though

      Id go for Salah+Ritchie instead of Mané+Fraser if I were you

      Don't think Fraser is nailed on and fixtures of Ritchie much better than Fraser's from GW3

      and as far as Luk > Jesus is concerned, Im considering it myself...

      but totally disagree on the fixtures - firts 2 GWs, Utd are better than City's

      only reason I consider that 'downgrade' is because City will score more goals than Utd for sure and I really like Jesus

      I'm basically on this exact squad at present after many changes

      I would stick with Mane as means you have the potential to bring in Alli/Erik for GW3 against BUR

      Salah doesn't leave many obvious switches in the 9m bracket and is new to PL

      I finally took the plunge and swapped Lukaku to Jesus - but that 1 million allowed me Alli instead of Mhiki.

      Not sure how you would spend that 1 million in a way that would dramatically improve your side.

      Not a fan of Foster at all - but apart from that it looks solid to me.

        I'd put the difference into getting a 5.0 defender instead of a second 4.5, but I'm fine with either one.
