The Technical Area – Firmino’s Opening Gameweeks

Heading into the 2017/18 season, the Fantasy Premier League reclassification of Roberto Firmino from midfielder to forward was a source of much chatter.

Three Gameweeks in and Firmino has made fools of those of us who shied away.

The Brazilian sits joint-top in the overall standings on 26 points, having notched two goals, a pair assists, and twice taken home a maximum bonus points haul. Indeed, only Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (106) leads Firmino (101) in the Bonus Points System (BPS) to date.

Over this international break, interest in the Liverpool man has been understandably high. He has experienced one price hike already (from 8.5 to 8.6), and could possibly rise again between now and the Gameweek 4 deadline.

With Liverpool in rampant form – as evidenced by last week’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal – Firmino offers managers an opportunity to save valuable funds by downgrading a premium forward option to a lower-priced alternative who has hitherto managed to outperform his more expensive rivals.

Here in the Technical Area, we thought that this week represented a good opportunity to dig into Firmino’s game in greater depth.

Specifically, we will be exploring how his profile compares to that of other FPL forwards and whether that early-season form can continue as the campaign unfolds.

So many things wrong with England's players, but a lack of intelligence stands out.

England is lackin creativity. They have no top class midlefielder who can create chances.

Harry Kane has a monster record and is a goalscoring machine.

This is why I cant understand why nobody but City bid for Alexis. Yes its his last year of contract. But for that money you get a player of immense quality. Now you're just playing the lotto next year with 10+ other clubs. Or you can buy Ox for 40 mil. Mind blown.

England scrape a draw or narrow win.....

    "job done against tough opposition"
"sometimes its not the performance but the result that matters"
"the best teams can grind out a result whilst not at their best"
    "the lads shown great resilience"

And we'll qualify, get knocked out in the first knock out stage by a plucky Croatia, only to repeat the same boring monotony for Euro 2020.

Oxlade-Chamberlain proving just how much of a waste of space he is.

    Same goes for Rashford.

Everybody saying Renato is a CDM.....but is he?...assuming he is a versatile player exactly who in that Bayern front line was he supposed to play ahead of?

Just like RLC I'll reserve judgment until he's actually playing for Swansea before deciding of he's a CDM or not.

Regardless of what he is, his goal and assist record is pretty dire for all teams he's played for.

Bobby f is one of them early warning bandwagons that if you don't get on now you will regret it. Like alonso last year. Anyone agree?

Yeah up to a point, but the Reds often look great against the top teams then can't break down a packed defence. I'm waiting to see if they've solved that weakness first ... hope so!

Why? He is only 8.6m. He'll be worth 9-9.5m like the rest of his Liverpool mids too. One difference I see is that being hesitant to ship him out when there's value tied in him could also be detrimental since he loves blanking for long stretches too.
