Dugout Discussion – Bournemouth vs Brighton

The Gameweek begins with a Friday night clash under lights at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth host south coast rivals Brighton in what is already a vital match for the home side.

Eddie Howe’s Cherries are simply in dismal form. They have suffered four successive defeats and have just a single goal to their name – albeit a goal of the season contender from Fantasy favourite Charlie Daniels.

Impotent in attack, Howe’s defence have also allowed 30 shots on target, more than any other side.

Such statistics will give Chris Hughton’s Brighton plenty of confidence heading into the contest, having sealed their first ever Premier League victory in Gameweek 3 with a 3-1 win over West Brom.

Pascal Gross inspired that performance with an 18-point haul made up of two goals and an assist. Fantasy managers will be fixed on his display in the number ten role tonight as the main point of interest.

Indeed, the match provides a sedate introduction to Gameweek 5, with few Fantasy assets on show.

The aforementioned Daniels is the top owned player in action. Still part of 12.7% of squads, the left-back has been sold by more than 222,000 managers over the last three Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How would people recommend getting Kane in by adjusting the front 7 with 2FT?

    Mkhi Salah Eriksen Richarlison
    Morata Firmino Lukaku

Why you think that lukaku is someone that will hurt your team if you dont own him but having kane who is your (C) for next few weeks? Anyone realy think that lukaku is going to outscore, lets say, jesus in next 4-5 gw?

What would you say the balance is between luck and skill in FPL?

We've seen some players that are really experienced in this game but have just been unlucky with the points they get, and other casuals who pay little to no attention to the game or make rash decisions get some high scoring points and sometimes even finish higher than the veterans.

It could be mostly luck in that anything can happen in football and that it's unpredictable, or you could perhaps argue it's mostly skill because to succeed in the game you have to follow the golden rules of FPL; eg. plan ahead, pick a safe captain, etc. and the better you are at planning and making the right moves and transfers, the better you do.

I would say it's probably 50/50 in terms of the balance of luck and skill in the game though I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on what the balance is.

Guess it depends on what your definition is of luck. I think the season is long enough that it tends to separate out the poor players from the better ones, but I do enjoy all the "check out this high ranked ghost ship" team posts towards the end of the season.

I agree it really depends on how every individual defines 'luck' and 'skill'. Some may define luck as a bad move paying off, and others may define luck by what points they receive every GW in general.

Bad players can do very well with luck yes, however good players are time and time again at the top. 80/20 for me

I think skill determines your average finish and luck affects your floor/ceiling. If you're a skillful/dedicated FPL player, you'll finish somewhere in the top 50k almost every season. It would take truly horrendous luck to finish outside that. You need some good luck to break into the top 1000/100.

Not sure about truly horrendous luck to finish outside the top 50k. FFS members league average rank was around 60k last year

Yeah, I just kinda pulled 50k out of my butt. Maybe top 100k would be fairer. Also as more people play and FFS becomes more mainstream it becomes more and more difficult to achieve a high rank. So maybe it was 50k 5 years ago.

very hard to judge though isn't it. Not everyone plays with the same goals in mind. Protecting your rank is no more skilful than punting to improve it but it'll provide much less variance

The majority play for lowest overall rank. Getting your rank to a place you can protect it takes some skill.

I find that once I'm ahead I can protect my lead quite well. It's harder to play well when chasing. It's tempting to take unnecessary punts (moves with a lower expected value) when really the ground would be better made up 5 points at a time

Without meaning to sound harsh, asking that question means you are probably not yet in a position to understand the answer. I know that sounds bad so let me be more constructive...

FPL is really just a platform where you can trade a market. In this market, the players are the stock and the points are the equivalent of your financial returns. There is fundamental analysis that can be done to determine the value of those stocks and fundamental news that changes the value of those stocks.

Then there are technical indicators. Those indicators are metrics that can be used in an attempt to predict the future trend or performance of those stocks.

Finally there is the same phycological challenges that an FPL manager or trader must overcome. These are the things that prevent them from executing the optimum strategy. The natural emotions or behaviours that we all have by default that prevent us from applying objectivity.

Finally, when you gamble (often) or trade (always) you are playing a game where there is a large portion of chance involved. But if you understand concepts such as expected value and standard deviation you will know that if you gamble/trade with an edge, over a statistically significant period, chance (or luck) only accounts for the volatility (deviations from the norm) and not the actual outcome over a statistically significant period.

I understand these concepts at a high level and used to practice them at a low level in regards to playing online poker for profit but I'm out of practice now.

Someone smarter than me would be able to tell you if 38 games is a significant amount of time for your edge to consistently manifest itself. My guess would be that it's not but when you look over many seasons a player with an edge would have consistent results with a few outlier seasons.

In conclusion... FPL is a market, you are a trader. There is a significant amount of chance involved but if you trade with an edge you will more often than not get a better return.

Finally, there are players that consistently crush FPL most years. They may be statistical anomalies but I suspect they have an edge and the ability to execute without deviating from their strategy due to emotion.

Thanks. I don't link my team because I play in cash leagues where there is decent money to be won and I know a lot of people use this site.

I do ok but not great. I started playing properly 3 seasons ago and my ranks have been:

          5,230
          5,503
          242,926

Last year I got off to a disastrous start and couldn't make up the ground.

Like in everything else in life, the factor of luck decreases with increasing knowledge. FPL success is driven by decisions based on your knowledge, first of all about clubs, players, who's nailed, suspended, injured etc. These are the basics, the next step is experience and data analysis, the final factor is luck. For example, you know players A and B are big hitters, you check their stats and are similary good, they play against similary bad opponents (lots of shots and goals conceded, not many saves etc). You have a 50-50 decision to make, toss a coin and go with player A. 25 minutes into the game he gets injured, meanwhile player B gets a haul. That's luck, because you can hardly predict an injury. However season is 38 gameweeks long so these situations even themselves out. The factor of knowledge is at least around 95%, in the long run, luck is pretty irrelevant.

Likewise. Stephens and Hegazi out. Davies and a 4.5 in. Clark or Lascelles from Toon or Naughton. Can't decide...

Hegazi next on the chopping block for me.

I'd go Lascelles personally. I know Naughton is a popular pick but I have my reservations.

I already have joselu and ritchie. not sure about tripling up on newcastle! Plus Naughton actually rotates better with my other DEFs. United, Burnley and Spurs.

I got Stephens too and thinking about the same. Think I will hold though. Someone could get injured tomorrow or Sunday, and I'm not gonna play Stephens next week anyway so might actually save transfer

    Evening/Morning gents

Eyeing up my next transfer, think Hegazi needs to go. I was one of the lucky ones that had him from the start so bagged a cool 0.2 plus his early points.

Got 4.9 to replace him with...

(Oh how I wish Shaw was playing and nailed)

    Foster Elliot
    Kolasinac Stephens Daniels Mee Suttner
    Haz Silva Ramsey JWP TC
    Kane Lukaku Chica

    1 FT 0 ITB

Daniels, JWP, Suttner (and maybe Chica + Stephens) need to go
play WC or just take a hit (Stephens + JWP > Davies + Chalobah)?

Kola could outscore Mendy for 0.5 less and is at less risk of rotation if Wenger behaved himself.

I'm keen on Mendy also but have opted to get Kola in first.

Too early for transfers I know, but...

    For -8?
    Lukaku to Vardy
    Jese to Eriksen/Alli
    Trippier to Naughton(enabler)

    Have Kane, Salah and Jesus.

    Thanks.

Going against all the rules and pulling the trigger on Stephens > Kola tonight.

'Points not prices' as the man himself says.

Let's hope Wenger pulls the same bench the bet players in the big games tactic on Sunday...

I agree but he would be at far less risk of injury. I normally never make transfers before the relevant games have been played. The Chelsea game is also likely to be more physical than a normal fixture and Kola seems to run down the wing like a man possessed half the time. Moses will probably have to wipe him out a couple of times in 90 mins.

been getting a lot of criticism from my ML about my WC team so wanted to know what people on here thought?

    Elliot/foster
    Davies/kola/jones/ward/mbemba
    Alli/salah/gross/mhiki/TC
    Lukaku/Kane/joselu

I had pog/mane/willian/yoshida/mounie & no Kane & Davies so felt it was right time to WC for my team

Question regarding Hegazi: If I got him in at 4.5 and he's now 4.9, and says he's 4.7 on the transfers page, if he drops down to 4.8 on the transfer page will it say 4.6 or 4.7?
