Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Kevin De Bruyne stars but Sergio Aguero misfires as Man City are stretched for a change, while Harry Kane is at it again away from home.

Liverpool, however, are left to rue a night of wasted opportunities.

Here are the notes from the first batch of Matchday 2 Champions League fixtures.

Tough test for City, long night for Aguero

After a fortnight spent steamrolling lesser sides, Man City were given a much sterner test by Shakhtar Donetsk just when they needed it most.

Heavy league wins over the likes of Watford and Crystal Palace, and against Feyenoord in Europe, are all well and good, but the Ukrainians put in a performance much more in keeping with what Pep Guardiola’s team might expect to face when travelling to Chelsea on Saturday.

Shakhtar outplayed their hosts for much of the first half before goals from the excellent Kevin De Bruyne and substitute Raheem Sterling capped a much-improved showing from City after the break.

They could even afford to miss a penalty – Sergio Aguero the guilty party – as they made it seven straight wins and five clean sheets from six matches in all competitions.

The tireless De Bruyne scored his first goal of the season, smashing home after being fed by David Silva, before substitutes Bernardo Silva and Sterling combined to seal the win.

By then, the 27.3% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Aguero might have been concerned less about their man missing a penalty than the fact that he had not long left the pitch.

The striker ended up playing 85 minutes, whereas his fellow forward Gabriel Jesus was subbed off after just 54 minutes.

Aguero has been bought by another 97,000+ new managers this week, whereas Jesus has been sold by more than 127,000.

Guardiola may well start both at Chelsea, with one of the pair perhaps withdrawn early. However, the doubt and anxiety is typical of what is to come throughout this period, with Man City juggling matches on two fronts.

It’s worth bearing in mind, though, that Aguero has struggled for pitch time for Argentina in recent months and is likely to earn far less minutes – if, indeed, any – over the upcoming international break. This could be a factor when Guardiola is considering his weekend line-up.

Elsewhere, the fact that the 4.2% owned Sterling was used only from the bench adds to Guardiola’s Stamford Bridge options. He scored his fourth goal in three matches when he came on – stating his case to make the starting line-up to face Chelsea.

Leroy Sane started back-to-back matches for the first time this season and was as dynamic as ever. But he was wasteful in front of goal and will be fearing for his starting berth on Saturday.

Second-guessing Guardiola’s intentions is always a risky business, although the 1.6% still holding on to injured defender Benjamin Mendy were at least given relatively definitive news by the manager post-match.

“Mendy is traveling to Barcelona and we will see what the problem is – our first impression is he will be out for longer than we thought. We will know more on Thursday. If he is out it will be like with Ilkay Gundogan and I will feel sad for him. He is a unique player with the joy he gives and it is a big setback. We will see in January whether we need to make a new signing.”

Midfielder Fabian Delph again deputised for Mendy and played well – great news for his footballing flexibility, but a non-starter from a Fantasy sense.

Who is a non-starter come Saturday evening is what will exercise our minds for the meantime.

Kane yet again

A Harry Kane hat-trick steered Spurs safely through what had the potential to be a bit of a Champions League banana skin in Cyprus.

The England striker made it nine goals for the season – seven of which have come in his last three matches on the road – as Spurs scored from their first three shots on target.

Assists in the 3-0 win came from Toby Alderweireld, Moussa Sissoko and Kieran Trippier.

Spurs travelled to Cyprus without key midfielder Christian Eriksen, who fell ill on Sunday.

There is no suggestion that the 26.2%-owned Dane won’t recover in time for the weekend trip to Huddersfield and, in fact, his FPL ownership will have welcomed his absence as their man had started seven of Spurs’ eight matches prior to last night’s fixture.

Others who took no part in Nicosia included Dele Alli and Jan Vertonghen, who were both suspended for the clash.

That should leave a squad relatively fresh for Saturday lunchtime’s match at Huddersfield.

And in Kane (27.9%), they have a forward in consistently devastating away form.

Liverpool miss out in Moscow

Jurgen Klopp cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines as his Liverpool players dominated in Russia only to be held to a second consecutive Champions League draw.

The Reds out-shot their hosts 16-4 but had to make do with just the one goal, from the impressive Philippe Coutinho, for their efforts.

The Brazilian fired home after a neat one-two with Sadio Mane – a combination that can now be reunited in the league as the Senegal international has completed his three-match domestic ban.

Coutinho is already picking up plenty of new owners this week – 89,000 and counting – and he dropped back into the midfield three in Moscow as Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah took the forward roles.

All three were guilty of spurning excellent chances to turn their dominance into goals, and the continued woes of Firmino (25.5%) will be of particular concern to his FPL ownership.

The forward has now scored just the once since the Gameweek 3 mauling of Arsenal and continues to be the subject of heavy sales – 150,000+ making him the most sold player of Gameweek 7 to date.

The trip to Newcastle now looks vital for his Fantasy prospects. Blank again and Firmino will be tasked with break his dry spell in matches with Manchester United and Spurs, arguably the two most efficient defences in the league.

At the back, Trent Alexander-Arnold came in for the suspended Joe Gomez, with the latter likely to return for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle, while left-back Alberto Moreno started in Moscow, which could open the way for Andrew Robertson to make his third league appearance at the weekend.

Klopp, meanwhile, surprised many by giving Loris Karius a run-out in goal and the keeper should probably have made a better job of keeping out the free-kick that handed Moscow an undeserved lead.

Simon Mignolet saved a penalty last time out in the league and it would be a major shock if he fails to return for the Tyneside trip.

What do we think of Mendy's injury? Do we believe he will miss majority of the season?

Has this opened the door for Danilo as an option?

According to Pep he's gonna be out for a couple months, and imo Danilo would be the Natural replacement although Delph wil probably get a game or two here and there

Seems like he'll be out for a while but can't guess as to how long

Danilo not nailed regardless imo, Pep will still try Sane wingback, Delph is now in the mix Gundogan B Silva etc it's a minefield

I have Salah, if picking now I'd choose Cout. Seems to be continuing where he left off last year, dominates set pieces too

Coutinho is a far better player but points output likely to be roughly the same IMO.

Maybe Phil just because he's cheaper and a better differential.

Lukaku or Kane as captain this week? I think both will score but Kane has more chance of exploding with 2/3 goals.
I'm a United fan but I'm siding with Kane this week, see how lukka gets on tonight...

Hard to think of an example of a player as good as kaku get so m uch hatred for the most spurious of reasons.it really is clutching at straws.the guy has been delivering the goods since the age of 16 at anderlecht. Playing for poor teams with less chances created, still delivers.kane is a late bloomer by footballing standards yet can do no wrong.he blanks, its never trolling but kaku does it... Both fantastic players but kaku for whatever reason just not appreciated (on here at least)

There's no outrageous reason for it other than he has the first touch of a monster truck and the dribbling of two monster trucks

You're taking it personally as if you're his dad or summat. He's a very good striker, his touch isn't the worst but you're making the comparison to Kane and other strikers who are better than him. Compared to them his touch isn't all that good, dribbling is practically non existent

                            Fowler created plenty for himself

Linekar less so but what's your point? I rate both of them as I do Lukaku I'm just not willing to ignore Lukaku's obvious failings

No, i watch football and see and incredible bias in the judgement of these two players and am just wondering why.kaku gets a lot of grief on here even when he gets a haul.

I see it too, I agree with you. I'm just saying the things Lukaku is bad at, which I feel he definitely is nowhere near world class on are more striking to the eye, when you see some of his first touches it sticks in the mind

I'm trying to explain why he might get the grief, not saying he deserves it. He's a marvellous striker and player but there is definite room for improvement

And he scores goals at a ridiculous rate. Kane is the better striker but the amount of criticism lukaku receives compared to Kane is unbelievable

Kane is on a different level to Lukaku in my eyes. Rom is good don't get me wrong but Harry has looked dynamic and prolific the past few seasons, creating space to fire off a shot and getting in good areas. He is more clinical and has the potential to be a world class striker. Lukaku not so much

He has been at a far better side at all times in his career and hardly set world alight when he went out on loan.thats a huge factor.imagine kaku got that luxury.he was deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea and still did it at west brom and everton, who are far from spurs in terms of quality.

There's a reason he has been at far better teams.. he is a far better player. Lukaku scored well for those sides because he was the only attacking option and was fed consistently

Harry Kane is twice the player lukaku is. Harry can create from nothing, lukaku needs to be supplied and is poor in tight spaces and against top defences.

I think morata is better than lukaku but that's just me I guess

So many people judge players just on FPL points.. it's sad. Some of the top class players are screens for defence and pivotal to their teams but will never translate to FPL points

Lukaku or Kane as captain this week? I think both will score but Kane has more chance of exploding with 2/3 goals.
I'm a United fan but I'm siding with Kane this week, see how lukka gets on tonight...

United fan but kane is better imo

United should feed Kaku more and not jus shoot all over the place

If your point was Lukaku is given more grief than he deserves then I think most people would agree, however there are valid reasons for the grief at times. He's a very good striker and finisher, there are aspects to his game that let him down and his close control and dribbling are two of those things, if you disagree that's fine

Kane hasn't been immune to criticism either, he was labelled a one season wonder, was terrible for England (along with everyone else) and took some awful set pieces which loads of people took the piss out of him for

                            - Aguero 10 goals in 15 v Chelsea.

                            - Silva 1 goal and 3 assists in his last 4 pl matches against chelsea

Mou has given no timeline. First it was thought to be 4-6 weeks but then there were rumours that if he has a surgery he could be out for 3 months.

                              We have no timeline.
The rumours are that they have looked into surgery an an option (not just rehab).
And physiscists that are in the know say that if you are concidering surgery we could be talking 3-6 months.

You didn't read it here first. But it's real.

I've been really close playing the WC for a while, but decided to wait until gw8.

Looking for a 1 week fix, NOT taking a hit. Sadly only 0.1 itb. Weakest links highlighted:

                                  Forster
                                  Valencia. Monreal. Davies.
                                  Salah. Miki. BRADY MOOY
                                  Kane. Lukaku. Chicha.

                                  Elliot. HEGAZY. Mbemba. FRASER.

                                  Any ideas?
                                  Brady/Mooy/Fraser to a more potent low-price midfielder?

You won't get a more potent one than Brady.

Choupo-moting might get something against Saints. It's a bit of a minefield in that price bracket though.

                                  1. Jesus out for Mortata (no City attack)

                                  2. Firmino & Alonso out for Mortata & Otamendi (no Liverpool attack)

I have to have at least one Englishman, and never Captain a player against Hammers. I broke the latter this week, but circumstances were against me. 😀

Never have Jamie Vardy or use a player vs Spurs. Also MUN + MCI 1 player maximum (two years ago Kun, last year Ibra, now Kun again) and no Chelsea strikers. Also have always at least 2-3 players with ownership lower than 5%.

like the latter, always more fun to have some differentials, albeit if you strike gold with them they quickly become well over 5%

Always keep a fit Phil Jones and get Aaron Ramsey at every available opportunity. My love for Alli and Eriksen is also an important part of my decision making.

I'm scared Aguero will not play or be subbed of at 60 since he played 90 in champions league. Who shall I sell him for Morata, Jesus or Vardy (just for short term and can't afford Kaku)

keep him, he'll play vs. Chelsea. It is a huge game. You'll want him back for the upcoming fixtures anyway surely?

He didn't play 90 he played 82, why would pep bring him off at 82 if he wasn't intending on starting him V Chelsea? Give him an extended int break? I don't think so, he will start. Might not play for the 90, but he will start

Could Arnautovic be an option to bring in for Fabregas? His price has dropped, and got some nice fixtures ahead.

Difficult to find a decent replacement for 4.4

Otamendi & Walker seem to be more nailed options.
