Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope

The current lull in domestic action allows us an opportunity to check in on the latest band of miscreants to dominate our Suspension Tightrope ahead of Gameweek 8.

Essentially, the Suspension Tightrope widget keeps a tally of cards accumulated from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League.

It is available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

We’ll update the widget after each Gameweek, and roll out articles such as this one, which go over the Fantasy implications of the cards collected.

This includes the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and climb onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

As mentioned in our first Suspension Tightrope article of the season, the FA have altered the curfew rules for players accumulating yellow and red cards in 2017/18.

According to this season’s FA handbook.

A Player accumulating five cautions will be automatically suspended for one first-team competitive match if he has accumulated those five cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League19
EFL19
National League23

A Player accumulating ten cautions will be automatically suspended for two FTCM if he has accumulated those ten cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League32
EFL37
National League37

Basically, players have to avoid five bookings over their respective team’s first 19 Premier League matches in order to sidestep a suspension.

Similarly, they must steer clear of 10 cautions over their side’s 32 opening top-flight matches to prevent a ban.

From a Fantasy point of view, then, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards.

And Gameweek 32 – on Saturday March 31 – is currently the curfew for 10 yellow cards.

However, we’ve recently spoken to the FA for some clarification on this matter and they have confirmed that, regardless of when their fixtures fall, the 19th and 32nd Premier League fixtures are the cut-off points for five and ten bookings respectively.

So if Arsenal, for example, had a match postponed in November, which later fell after December 23rd (ie, the current date when 19 Gameweeks could be completed), then their players would still be liable to a suspension in that 19th fixture.

The second cut-off point is particularly pertinent, then, bearing in mind that the final of the Carabao Cup will take place in Gameweek 28 and the FA Cup Quarter Finals fall in Gameweek 31.

Those teams involved in either of those will face a postponed fixture and, therefore, their players will have a curfew for 10 cards extended.

Any ban to the current crop of players on four yellows – Palace’s Jason Puncheon, Southampton’s Oriol Romeu, Swansea’s Leroy Fer and West Ham right-back Pablo Zabaleta – would have minimal Fantasy impact.

Lower down, though, there are some big-hitters who currently sit just two yellows shy of a single-match suspension

Chelsea duo David Luiz and Marcos Alonso, along with Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, are among the 11 most owned defenders in FPL.

Worryingly, Alonso – boasting a 17.7% ownership – has already surpassed his tally of two yellows in the Premier League from last season.

Otamendi has collected a yellow card in three of the last five Gameweeks and, having earned nine bookings in each of the last two seasons, faces a tough task to avoid toppling off the Tightrope.

Potentially, once they have collected a fourth yellow, their managers could look to manage their respective fixtures in order to avoid picking up a ban for a “big match” against their league rivals.

So in Alonso’s case, Chelsea have a fixture against Manchester United in Gameweek 11. A booking in either Gameweek 8 or 9 could see him protected in the Gameweek 10 trip to Bournemouth.

For Otamendi, the clash with Arsenal – also in Gameweek 11 – looks the hotspot. So Pep Guardiola will be very wary of playing the Argentine in Gameweek 10 at West Brom, should the defender pick up a card in either Gameweek 8 or 9.

On the plus side, neither Otamendi or Alonso would seem likely to be called into action for their respective Carabao Cup ties which lie between Gameweeks 9 and 10 with this scenario in mind.

Or being cynical about it, back-to-back bookings in the next two Gameweeks would even allow them to serve out the suspension in the Carabao Cup, giving them the midweek off and getting the ban out of the way in advance.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie is the other standout name here, having served up four assists in the opening seven.

The Scotland international was booked three times in the first four Gameweeks but has now gone three league matches without incurring the referee’s wrath.

Finally, Brighton’s Tomer Hemed is the only player suspended from domestic duties in the Premier League. After serving the first of a three-match ban last weekend, he won’t return to action until the Gameweek 10 home clash against Southampton.

That match against the Saints is the first of four home matches in six for Chris Hughton’s side, which also includes a trip to Swansea City.

Having bagged two goals and an assist in his last two outings at the Amex, Hemed – at 4.9 – could yet emerge as a valid option for those on the lookout for a cut-price pick in attack.

Here's a WC squad you'll never see again - triple Burnley defence!

It's a 5-2-3 except for the few GWs when the Burnley 3 will sit it out:

    Pope Elliot
    Luiz, Kolasinc, Monreal, Ward. Lowton
    Silva, Sterling, Fellaini, Iwobi, RLC
    Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

    It's my squad, no joke.

    Go on then ......

I like it, except Iwobi (would get Atsu instead) and maybe just two Burnley defs (Pope to Fabianski), but it's good

RLC, however, is terrible pick. Not even cheaper, like McArthur.

Pick 2 for WC as 3/4 midfielder from A-C below. AB what I have gone for now and A could be C in couple of weeks

    B Richarlison

Fairly settled on this 4-3-3. Will like rotate between RLC/Ward/Carroll. Shaqiri will likely become Richarlison in 2 GWs. G2G? 🙂

    Fabianski
    Davies - Cedric - Ward - Otamendi
    Coutinho - D.Silva - Shaqiri
    Kane - Lukaku - Jesus
    (Elliot - Carroll - RLC - Mbemba)

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Elliot Begovic
    Davies Jones Cedric Ward Mbemba
    Salah Silva Ritchie Richarlison RLC
    Kane Lukaku Vardy

Should I downgrade my defence? Should I get rid of Ritchie for Atsu? Attacking front ok?

Not quite sure why you would think that. Yes they have shipped in quite a lot goals so far (Sou game was ridicilous) but they are begining to sort things out if you have watched their games. Conceding 3 vs spurs is not bad. A lot of teams will do that. Huddersfield kept consecutive cleansheets but conceded 4 on hometurf vs Spurs. You also have to take the fixtures into consideration.

      o/

Not really until this year. I've ran 2 x half maratons so far, should have my first Maraton 14th Oct. I got sick though, had 2 week break and today first run after two weeks felt awful :I I'll see how the next couple runs go before making a decision whether to start or not.

I have completed a few marathons, adventure races etapes. That is not a boast. Just muy way of saying I have made a few fatal errors.

      1. Carb load. This is a tricky one. I would not take this one too seriously. Just eat healthily betwen now and maratjon day will be best.

      2. Gels. I am not a huge fan. I have eaten mysrkf sick of gels on race and etape days on at leadt 2 occasion. EAT WHAT YOU NORMALLY EAT RACE DAY AND DRINK WHAT YOU NORMALLY DRINK. I can survive on bananas and water. Gels and the like will make you sick otherwise. Big margetting area so take with a pinch of salt.

      3. Take a drink of Dioralyte on the eve of the marathon and the morning of it. No need for any more electrolyte drinks thereafter. I would say avoid all electrolyte drinks on the day as I do not train with them and they are only counter productive to me then.

So in a nutshell. Eat what you normally eat and drink what you normally drink. Nothing fancy.

As for race strategy. Try to run the 1st half very slowly. Keep all your energy for the last 6 miles. You will need it then. Running slowly takes disipline especially in the 1st few miles or so but onve you set that tempo your you will soon get comfortable running at it.

When you invariably start to suffer just remember you are not alone.

I am excited for you thinking about it. Good luck

People on hear are stating Kane is fixture proof. He only got 3 goals against the rest of the top 6 last season. Not saying he won't score against United, Liverpool etc. but doubt he'll be getting a brace each in his tough fixtures. Just my opinion.

Sure, I won't be captaining him vs. someone like United for instance, but at the same time Tottenham are still likely to score goals, and he's more likely than anyone else.

Not sure about fixture proof, but close enough. Issue I'd have is carrying three Spurs players through a run of LIV (H), ManU (a) and Arsenal (a) in their next four after Bournemouth.

Might look to offload Alli, although their other game during that run is Palace at home in a gameweek where Chelsea play ManU and City play Arsenal. Not ideal.

It's a tough one. If I was on a WC, I'd definitely remove Alli/Eriksen to a City midfielder and use the funds to upgrade a couple of defenders.

Without a WC it hard to do as it involves more moves or points hits, which seem harder to justify.

Yeap. Every mock team I've made looks better with Silva & Sterling and without Eriksen. I can see myself bringing him back later. Surely he won't play 90mins with their upcoming CL games and tight schedule.

Same. I wouldn't pick Eriksen in a WC, certainly not in a 4-3-3 where I'd want as strong a back four as possible and a above average third midfielder.

    Potential Wildcard team:

    Fabianski / Elliot

    Davies / Jones / Cedric / Wimmer / Mee

    Sanchez / Chupo-Moting / Ritchie / Loftus-Cheek / MacArthur

    Kane / Lukaku / Jesus

    Current Team:

    Fabianski / Elliot

    Davies / Cresswell / Kolasinac / Stones / Mee

    Silva / Chupo-Moting / Alli / Loftus-Cheek / Carroll

    Lacazette / Lukaku / Jesus

Is that worth WC, mainly to get Kane / Sanchez in?

Is it worth WC? Not really. I prefer your current defence/midfield.

Just do Alli and Lacazette to Sterling and Kane for -4.

I wouldn't WC that. And Sanchez is too expensive anyway. Not even on pens it seems.

You can get Kane easily with -4. Get rid of Kaku, downgrade Kolasinac (take your pick) or Alli (city mid)

I thought the whole idea of a wildcard is to catch the double risers.

Finalise your team end of next week, catch the rises every night until then.

    Or am i missing something.

what nonsense! U wildcard if u r unhappy with ur team & set up a new team with in form players or players with good fixtures. U can only make a profit if somebody rises by .2 & apart from Kane, I dont think anybody will double rise now. Dont understand how many casuals are playing. It's points & not money that matter.

Was planning on WC'ing but have decided to stick it out with this team until next IB ......

    Foster
    Kola, Bavies, Ward
    Mikhi, Salah, Ramsey, Davis
    Kane(C), Kaku, Firmino

    Elliot, P Jones, Mbemba, Tarroll

No City or Chelsea coverage but I'm thinking there could be goals in Liverpool/Man U & Liv/Spurs the following week ......

    Is my rank gonna plummet?

Yeah I'd definitely get Sterling or Silva in for Mkihi and Vardy in For Firmino.

      FT used, brought Ward in.

I think Lukaku is nailed-on to score against Liverpool so every chance of a Mikhi assist IMO, Huddersfield Away after that ...

Liverpool I think score against both Utd and Spurs too ...

Would it be silly of me to bench Coutinho in favour for Loewe next gameweek? Coutinho faces up against Mourinho's stingy defence and his tendency to park the bus. Loewe, on the other hand, faces shot-shy Swansea and Huddersfield have a very good defence. Somehow I'm more convinced that Hudds will keep a clean sheet than Coutinho is likely to grab a goal or assist.

No, just no, play Coutinho. Mourinho's bench parking could mean even more shots from range.

    Afternoon all,
Is Batshuayi regarded as a certain starter in Morata's absence or is Hazard the way to go for Chelsea attacking cover? Two Champions League goals this season and an indifferent performance from Hazard when he was the lone striker for Chelsea in the past few seasons when Costa was out, surely Batshuayi has to start. A better prospect than Vardy in the same price bracket.

If we knew he would be a starter then, yes I do think he would be perfect.
      But we don't.
