Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Sunday

Sunday did its best to provide incident and excitement, although it was always going to be difficult to follow on from yesterday’s spoils. An unexpected Manolo Gabbiadini brace stole the show, while assists for budget midfielders provided the rest of the Fantasy fare, as defences buckled in both matches.

Gross the provider once again

Brighton has now scored six goals this season, with Pascal Gross involved in five of them.

The German claimed his third assist of the season with his interception that lead to Anthony Knockaert‘s sweetly struck opener.

Gross took an ownership 14.1% into Gameweek 8, having been signed by over 109,000 new managers, although another 68,000 saw fit to move him out. They may be regretting that decision this evening after another steady six-point return from the budget midfielder.

It was Knockaert who went into the campaign considered our most likely attacking option in the Seagulls ranks. But the Frenchman has been on the periphery until today. He fired a first goal of the season on his recall to Chris Hughton’s starting XI following his benching at Arsenal.

Both midfielders can build on Sunday’s points over a continued run of favourable fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. Hughton’s men face visits to West Ham and Swansea, while Southampton and Stoke are the next visitors to the Amex Stadium.

However, that run is more likely to promote interest in the Brighton defence and, intriguingly, we may have a new budget option available to us.

Shane Duffy was forced off with what looked like a thigh problem to be replaced by Uwe Huenemeier, who, at 3.9, may now be called into action. The German is already owned by 6.2% of managers as a bench warming budget option but could now enter more squads should Duffy face a spell on the sidelines.

Gabbiadini delivers as Forster falters

Manolo Gabbiadini scored his first goals since Gameweek 2 with a brace against Newcastle United to provide a rare double-digit return.

The Italian first pegged back the visitors with a fine solo effort before converting a spot-kick after Shane Long was felled.

Dusan Tadic was on the pitch at the time of the award, indicating that Gabbiadini has now assumed penalty duties. Tadic had previously taken and scored a spot-kick ahead of the striker against West Ham in Gameweek 2.

Gabbiadini was recalled to the Saints starting line-up today having been reduced to cameo roles since his last start in Gameweek 4. He had suffered a loss of 190,000 owners over that spell and went into today’s game as part of just 95,000 squads.

The 12-points appear unlikely to spark a renaissance, although Gabbiadini’s confidence levels will be boosted ahead of West Brom’s visit in Gameweek 9. Another return against the Baggies could see some begin to reconsider the striker, although his previous inconsistency, coupled with the availability of Swansea City’s Tammy Abraham, will likely temper interest.

Fraser Forster‘s uncertain display helped ensure that Southampton had to settle for a point.

The keeper was slow to react to Isaac Hayden’s first-half strike, while he also lets Ayoze Perez’s shot rebound back to the striker for the eventual winner.

Forster is part of 9.0% of squads and went into Gameweek 8 having produced nine points via a penalty save at Stoke City last time out. That haul had earned him 56,000 new owners before Saturday’s deadline, second only to Newcastle’s Rob Elliot who picked up 70,000 managers. Both keepers produced just a single point to reward their recent investors.

Elsewhere for Newcastle, Christian Atsu recovered from the knock that kept him from international duty and duly delivered an assist for his 4.2% ownership. The Ghanian’s initial drive was blocked before rebounding to Hayden to convert the Magpies’ opener.

Like Atsu, Matt Ritchie also figured having recovered from the injury that kept him out of Scotland’s squad over the break. However, his role on set-pieces remains reduced by Jonjo Shelvey’s presence. Ritchie took 13 of 15 corners with Shelvey out of favour but shared them four apiece today.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    What are Alli owners doing?

He will explode eventually but seems a long way off that form. I mainly brought him in due to no Champions League and the missing England game seemed a bonus, but he has 0 form and doesn't exactly look dangerous either. Looks quite lazy when I see his highlights compared to yesteryear.

Sold him on WC last week. Salah, Coutinho should outscore him this year but you are right he will still find his way back to form/goals eventually, just too expensive to hold for now IMO.

I guess it depends on formation. If 3 at the back, Jones is mainly the source of good autosubs points. If 4 at the back, Jones/Carroll/Atsu helps out. Without looking, I'll say 3 on average.

19 goals in 94 PL matches. I'll pass. Him and Joselu are rubbish.

If you are looking for a cheap forward then Abraham is the one IMO. He has the right profile - young, improving, has scored lots of goals before.

    3. Ibracadabra
      • 15 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Not prolific enough in his PL history, better to go high risk/high reward with Abraham even based on his Championship scoring record. Diouf will be a Joselu / Perez / Calvert Lewin / Hemed style tease who will score once or twice and then blank for five weeks IMO. We know him well for years in PL and he doesn't put together lots of consistency.

Minutes played between attacking returns for City assets.

      Aguero - 51.8 Minutes
      Jesus - 67.9 Minutes
      De Bruyne - 111.7 Minutes
      D.Silva - 98.9 Minutes
      Sterling - 59.6 Minutes
      Sane - 58 Minutes

If you think Sterling will play 60 minutes next week he is likely to have a goal or assist. Good option in my opinion.

Sterling best City bet since you never know where points are coming from and cheapest? He surely will get rotated but all the other also(except Silva or KDB maybe?)

I think it's worth just absorbing the rotation for City assets since they are all going to score so well. Also they can come on in the last twenty minutes and get points.

He was suppose to be playing deep but kept wandering forward and getting into some nice positions one of the reasons Palace spanked them, think Conte might have a word in his ear to stop his wandering

Surprised by the Fabregas punts on here. If I was Conte I would drop him and put Luiz in central midfield with Bakayoko. With Morata back the old attack of Hazard, Morata and Pedro can start too. Get the defensive side sorted and let Alonso, Zappacosta and the front three sort out the attack.

Conte is at heart a defensive manager and quite frankly, the defence is letting them down. Part of the problem, IMO, is Fabregas in central midfield.

      1. Ibracadabra
        • 15 Years

Good analysis but Conte specifically mentioned he sees Luiz as a defender not a midfielder after the Kante injury.

          Per Conte though?

"We have to approach seven games in one month and need to find a different solution by adapting defenders into midfielders or by giving opportunities to young players like Scott or Ampadu to play from the start."

Aké or Daniels? Aké better at BPs, Daniels probably still more of an offensive threat.

Demarai Gray could be a great FPL option IMO. He is wasting his time on the bench at Leicester. Should put in a transfer request.

1 goal in 49 league games though. Agree he passes the eye test as an exciting super sub for Leicester but doubt we would consider him unless Mahrez was injured long term, and even in your hypothetical (which won't happen) he's unlikely to transfer to a more attacking team than Leicester so best case for his usage is Mahrez or Albrighton long term injuries. Even then at 5.3m he will be similar to an Atsu or others who won't light the world on fire... Very young still and needs to improve end product.

I actually know his step father. He was happy playing pre season but limited first team appearance is stifling him and he will try and go out on loan come January.

Have 2.9 m itb and 1ft. Think I will ditch Ritchie instead of Choupo but...
    A) Since I can afford to wait, then maybe watch ManCity in CL midweek and then decide which one of Sterling Sane Silva to get?
    B) Or take the chance on Sterling since price rise today?
